Hemodynamic and hormonal factors are considered in explaining salt and water retention; a classification of the various clinical disorders characterized by edema formation, based on the predominant pathophysiologic mechanism, is offered; and therapeutic techniques and the role of diuretics are reviewed in the light of the physiologic determinants of edema formation.
