The role of systems theory in political science: The case of unemployment in Spain

This paper will be consecrated to the problem of unemployment in Spain from the perspective of Systems Theory. But first I would like to emphasize, in a very schematic form, some of the possibilities and advantages of Systems Theory in Political Science. The purpose is only to suggest that the application of some theoretical and methodological principles of Systems Theory could contribute significantly to the development and efficiency of political systems. Let us say for the moment that the endevour requires to fulfill two main prerequisites: first to adopt the basic systemic principle which is to select the essential variablesfor any given piece of research within a polity; and second, to discover the ”system of values” that underlines this polity. To ignore these two fundamental prerequisites should be in principle theoretical and methodologically criticized as we hope to show when we study the unemployment problem in Spain. The application of the model could reduce unemployment from the current 17,1 % until some 12% in the period of 4 years.

New techniques for solving some matrix and matrix differential equations

Matrix and matrix differential equations play an important role in system theory, control theory, stability theory of differential equations, communication systems and many other fields. In this paper, we present the solutions of non-homogeneous matrix differential equations, convolution matrix differential equations and matrix equations which include the renewal matrix equation by using convolution and Kronecker products of matrices. Furthermore, the existence and uniqueness of the solution of some important and interesting special cases of these equations are also considered with some illustrated examples in order to show our new approaches.

The Politics of Systems Theory within Social Work

• Summary: The impact and role of systems theory in social work is analysed politically. The political analysis explores the social construction of professions and their knowledge and theory bases by understanding how theory is used by and generates groups contending for influence in social work. Systems theory had a major impact on social work in the 1970s and developed in the USA in ecological theory and more broadly as a contribution to networking. • Findings: The analysis of social work writings confirms contextual explanations, that systems theory had an impact as part of wider social changes affecting social work, rather than for intrinsic reasons of theoretical or intellectual development. In the USA, this led to its use as continuity with traditional theoretical concepts; in the UK, as a response to organizational change. Ecological theory continued as a major influence in the USA because it maintained that continuity; systems theory declined in the UK because further organizational changes supplanted it. Networking developed separately, drawing in other theoretical traditions, supplanting systems ideas. Family therapy used similar ideas at the outset, but developed different theoretical traditions. • Applications: The example of systems theory shows how different theoretical traditions and social contexts for the use of knowledge in professions affect theoretical and professional development.

Commutative and noncommutative representations of matrix-valued herglotz-nevanlinna functions

Operator realizations of matrix-valued Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions play an important and essential role in system theory, in the spectral theory of bounded nonselfadjoint operators, and in interpolation problems. Here, a generalization for realization results of the Brodskiǐ-Livsic type is given for Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions whose spectral measures are compactly supported.

Dissipative periodic systems and symmetric interpolation in Schur classes

Matrix-valued functions analytic and contractive in the open unit disk (Schur functions) play an important role in system theory. They represent transfer functions of causal time-invariant dissipative systems. In this paper we show how a Schur function can still be associated to a k-periodic system. This function satisfies a certain symmetry condition (conditions (1.7) for k=2 and (4.4) for general k). We study a general bitangential interpolation problem for the Schur functions satisfying this symmetry condition.

On spline regularized inversion of noisy Laplace transforms

In this paper we have converted the Laplace transform to an integral equation of the first kind of convolution type, which is an ill-posed problem and used the spline regularization method to solve it. Inversion of perturbed Laplace transforms also plays an important role in system theory. The method is applied to several test examples taken from [1–3, 8, 11, 22]. It gives a good approximation to the true solution and compares well with the methods discussed in [1–3, 8, 11, 22]. The results are shown in Table 1 and respective diagrams.

Regularized Inversion of Noisy Laplace Transforms

In this paper we construct a sequence of regularized inverses of the Laplace transform by relating this transform to a convolution operator for functions on the group of the positive real numbers with multiplication. Estimation of the mixing distribution, when a mixture of exponential distributions is observed, is an example. Inversion of perturbed Laplace transforms also plays a role in system theory.

SYSTEMS THEORY INSTRUMENTED MODELING AND SIMULATION METHODOLOGY

This paper reviews Zeigler's approach to base modeling and simulation on a rigorous systems theoretic foundation. And it reviews Zeigler's approach to utilize artificial intelligence techniques to support the multifaceted modeling methodology—a methodology that recognizes the multiplicity of objectives and multiplicities of models in a problem solving enterprise. After discussing the role of simulation in the general scientific problem solving process, we discuss the role of systems theory in modeling and simulation. Then, we present the system entity structure knowledge representation scheme that constitutes the key concept of the multifaceted modeling methodology. Finally, we outline the design of an integrated systems theory instrumented modeling and simulation environment and its stage of implementation at the University of Linz.

An integral equation in systems theory

This paper considers an integral equation of the Fredholm type which plays an important role in systems theory. The aim is to examine the uniqueness and differentiability of its solution. These properties are required in a number of system applications.

Some algebraic, geometric, and system-theoretic properties of the Special Functions of mathematical physics

It is known that many of the Special Functions of mathematical physics appear as matrix elements of Lie group representations. This paper is concerned with a beginning attack on the converse problem, i.e., finding conditions that a given function be a matrix element. The methods used are based on a combination of ideas from system theory, functional analysis, Lie theory, differential algebra, and linear ordinary differential equation theory. A key idea is to attach a symbol as an element of a commutative algebra. In favorable cases, this symbol defines a Riemann surface, and a meromorphic differential form on that surface. The topological and analytical invariants attached to this form play a key role in system theory. The Lie algebras of the groups appear as linear differential operators on this Riemann surface. Finally, it is shown how the Picard-Vessiot-Infeld-Hull theory of factorization of linear differential operators leads to realization of many Special Functions as matrix representations of group representations.

Most planning strategies include a goal development phase, yet very little concrete information is available in the program planning literature to help the planner know what a goal is or should be. Goals play an important role in systems theory and the theory offers a structure for the careful defining of goals. This article identifies the function of goals in systems as being the facilitation of evaluation and control. From this system functional analysis viewpoint, several specific characteristics of goals are derived and discussed.
