Reservoir Regulation Changed Terrestrial Particulate Organic Carbon Transport and Burial Processes off the Yellow River Mouth

AbstractThe dynamic behavior of particulate organic carbon (POC) is crucial for understanding biogeochemical carbon cycling in coastal and oceanic environments. However, intense watershed human activities have significantly altered the POC transport and burial in the estuary‐coast continuum. Here, we developed a novel parameterization scheme that incorporates grain‐size constraints to investigate the dispersal and accumulation processes of POC off the Yellow River mouth during the water‐sediment regulation scheme (WSRS) using a three‐dimensional hydrodynamic model (FVCOM). The result shows that the model successfully captures the offshore transport and hydrodynamic sorting of POC, which leads to a progressive increase in POC content with offshore dispersion and significant variations in POC and sediment deposition across different isobaths. Rapid fluctuations in river discharge and sediment composition during WSRS stages result in noticeable differences in sedimentation patterns for sediment and POC. At the Water‐regulation stage, distinct differences are observed in the distribution of riverine POC and sediment across various isobaths. In contrast, during the Sediment‐regulation stage, these differences are significantly reduced due to the finer riverine sediment. Compared to the sediment‐regulation, the Water‐regulation plays a crucial role in enhancing the effective burial of POC. Coarse‐grained sediment can form an armored layer that protects OC from disturbance. Additionally, increased runoff during this stage promotes the offshore transport of POC to a less energetic environment (>10 m in depth). This study provides valuable insights into POC dynamics in high‐turbidity estuarine and coastal environments. It underscores the importance of employing comprehensive modeling approaches to elucidate these complex processes.

Depth‐Partitioning of Particulate Organic Carbon Composition in the Rising and Falling Stages of the Amazon River

AbstractThe Amazon River mobilizes organic carbon across one of the world's largest terrestrial carbon reservoirs. Quantifying the sources of particulate organic carbon (POC) to this flux is typically challenging in large systems such as the Amazon River due to hydrodynamic sorting of sediments. Here, we analyze the composition of POC collected from multiple total suspended sediment (TSS) profiles in the mainstem at Óbidos, and surface samples from the Madeira, Solimões and Tapajós Rivers. As hypothesized, TSS and POC concentrations in the mainstem increased with depth and fit well to Rouse models for sediment sorting by grain size. Coupling these profiles with Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler discharge data, we estimate a large decrease in POC flux (from 540 to 370 kg per second) between the rising and falling stages of the Amazon River mainstem. The C/N ratio and stable and radiocarbon signatures of bulk POC are less variable within the cross‐section at Óbidos and suggest that riverine POC in the Amazon River is predominantly soil‐derived. However, smaller shifts in these compositional metrics with depth, including leaf wax n‐alkanes and fatty acids, are consistent with the perspective that deeper and larger particles carry fresher, less degraded organic matter sources (i.e., vegetation debris) through the mainstem. Overall, our cross‐sectional surveys at Óbidos highlight the importance of depth‐specific sampling for estimating riverine export fluxes. At the same time, they imply that this approach to sampling is perhaps less essential with respect to characterizing the composition of POC sources exported by the river.

Modeling lateral carbon fluxes for agroecosystems in the Mid-Atlantic region: Control factors and importance for carbon budget

Estimating lateral carbon fluxes in agroecosystems presents challenges due to intricate anthropogenic and biophysical interactions. We used a modeling technique to enhance our comprehension of the determinants influencing lateral carbon fluxes and their significance in agroecosystem carbon budgets. The SWAT-C model was refined by incorporating a dynamic dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) module, enhancing our ability to accurately quantify total lateral carbon fluxes. This improved model was calibrated using observed data on riverine particulate organic carbon (POC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) fluxes, as well as net ecosystem exchange (NEE) data monitored by a flux tower situated in a representative agricultural watershed, the Tuckahoe Watershed (TW) of the Chesapeake Bay's coastal plain. We assessed the losses of POC, DOC, and DIC across five primary rotation types: C (continuous carbon), CS (corn-soybean), CSS (corn-soybean-soybean), CWS (corn-wheat-soybean), and CWSCS (corn-wheat-soybean-corn-soybean). Our study revealed notable variations in the average annual fluxes of POC (ranging between 152 and 198 kg ha−1), DOC (74–85 kg ha−1), and DIC (93–156 kg ha−1) across the five rotation types. The primary influencing factor for annual POC fluxes was identified as sediment yield. While both annual DOC and DIC fluxes displayed a marked correlation with surface runoff across all crop rotation schemes, soil respiration also significantly influenced annual DIC fluxes. Total lateral carbon fluxes (POC + DOC+DIC) constituted roughly 11 % of both net ecosystem production (NEP) and NEE, yet they represented a striking 95 % of net biome production (NBP) in the TW's agroecosystem. Grain yield carbon accounted for 80 % of both NEP and NEE and was nearly seven times that of NBP. Our findings suggest that introducing soybeans into cornfields tends to reduce NEP, NEE, and also NBP. Conversely, integrating winter wheat into the corn-soybean rotation significantly boosted NEP, NEE, and NBP values, with NBP even surpassing the levels in continuous corn cultivation.

The Role of Glacier Erosion in Riverine Particulate Organic Carbon Export

AbstractBiospheric particulate organic carbon (POCbio) burial and rock petrogenic particulate organic carbon (POCpetro) oxidation are opposing long‐term controls on the global carbon cycle, sequestering and releasing carbon, respectively. Here, we examine how watershed glacierization impacts the POC source by assessing the concentration and isotopic composition (δ13C and Δ14C) of POC exported from four watersheds with 0%–49% glacier coverage across a melt season in Southeast Alaska. We used two mixing models (age‐weight percent and dual carbon isotope) to calculate concentrations of POCbio and POCpetro within the bulk POC pool. The fraction POCpetro contribution was highest in the heavily glacierized watershed (age‐weight percent: 0.39 ± 0.05; dual isotope: 0.42 (0.37–0.47)), demonstrating a glacial source of POCpetro to fjords. POCpetro was mobilized via glacier melt and subglacial flow, while POCbio was largely flushed from the non‐glacierized landscape by rain. Flow normalized POCbio concentrations exceeded POCpetro concentrations for all streams, but surprisingly were highest in the heavily glacierized watershed (mean: 0.70 mgL−1; range 0.16–1.41 mgL−1), suggesting that glacier rivers can contribute substantial POCbio to coastal waters. Further, the most heavily glacierized watershed had the highest sediment concentration (207 mgL−1; 7–708 mgL−1), and thus may facilitate long‐term POCbio protection via sediment burial in glacier‐dominated fjords. Our results suggest that continuing glacial retreat will decrease POC concentrations and increase POCbio:POCpetro exported from currently glacierized watersheds. Glacier retreat may thus decrease carbon storage in marine sediments and provide a positive feedback mechanism to climate change that is sensitive to future changes in POCpetro oxidation.

Watershed carbon yield derived from gauge observations and river network connectivity in the United States

River networks play a critical role in the global carbon cycle. Although global/continental scale riverine carbon cycle studies demonstrate the significance of rivers and streams for linking land and coastal regions, the lack of spatially distributed riverine carbon load data represents a gap for quantifying riverine carbon net gain or net loss in different regions, understanding mechanisms and factors that influence the riverine carbon cycle, and testing simulations of aquatic carbon cycle models at fine scales. Here, we (1) derive the riverine load of particulate organic carbon (POC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) for over 1,000 hydrologic stations across the Conterminous United States (CONUS) and (2) use the river network connectivity information for over 80,000 catchment units within the National Hydrography Dataset Plus (NHDPlus) to estimate riverine POC and DOC net gain or net loss for watersheds controlled between upstream-downstream hydrologic stations. The new riverine carbon load and watershed net gain/loss represent a unique contribution to support future studies for better understanding and quantification of riverine carbon cycles.

Modeling dissolved and particulate organic carbon dynamics at basin and sub-basin scales

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) play a fundamental role in biogeochemical cycles of freshwater ecosystems. However, the lack of readily available distributed models for carbon export has limited the effective management of organic carbon fluxes from soils, through river networks and to receiving marine waters. We develop a spatially semi-distributed mass balance modeling approach to estimate organic carbon flux at a sub-basin and basin scales, using commonly available data, to allow stakeholders to explore the impacts of alternative river basin management scenarios and climate change on riverine DOC and POC dynamics. Data requirements, related to hydrological, land-use, soil and precipitation characteristics are easily retrievable from international and national databases, making it appropriate for data-scarce basins. The model is built as an open-source plugin for QGIS and can be easily integrated with other basin scale decision support models on nutrient and sediment export.We tested the model in Piave river basin, in northeast Italy. Results show that the model reproduces spatial and temporal changes in DOC and POC fluxes in relation to changes in precipitation, basin morphology and land use across different sub-basins. For example, the highest DOC export were associated with both urban and forest land use classes and during months of elevated precipitation. We used the model to evaluate alternative land use scenarios and the impact of climate on basin level carbon export to Mediterranean.

The role of earthquakes and storms in the fluvial export of terrestrial organic carbon along the eastern margin of the Tibetan plateau: A biomarker perspective

Driven by earthquakes and intense rainfall, steep tectonically active mountains are hotspots of terrestrial organic carbon mobilization from soils, rocks, and vegetation by landslides into rivers. Subsequent delivery and fluvial mobilization of organic carbon from different sources can impact atmospheric CO2 concentrations across a range of timescales. Extreme landslide triggering events can provide insight on processes and rates of carbon export. Here we used suspended sediment collected from 2005 to 2012 at the upper Min Jiang, a main tributary of the Yangtze River on the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, to compare the erosion of terrestrial organic carbon before and after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake and a storm-derived debris flow event in 2005. To constrain the source of riverine particulate organic carbon (POC), we quantified lignin phenols and n-alkanoic acids in the suspended sediments, catchment soils and landslide deposits. We found that riverine POC had higher inputs of less-degraded, discrete organic matter at high suspended sediment loads, while the source of POC seemed stochastic at low suspended sediment concentrations. The debris flow in 2005 mobilized a large amount of POC, resulting in an export of lignin within a single day equivalent to a normal year. In comparison, the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake increased the flux of POC and particulate lignin, albeit with limited impact on POC sources in comparison to seasonal variations. Our results highlight the important role of episodic events in the fluvial export of terrestrial carbon.

East Siberian Sea: Interannual heterogeneity of the suspended particulate matter and its biogeochemical signature

The East Siberian Sea (ESS) is the largest, shallowest and most icebound Arctic marginal sea. It receives substantial input of terrigenous material and climate-vulnerable old organic carbon from both coastal erosion and rivers draining the extensive permafrost-covered watersheds. This study focuses on the interannual variability and spatial distribution of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the surface and bottom waters of the ESS during the ice-free period in 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2008. We report on the composition and variability of particulate organic carbon (POC), total nitrogen (TN), POC/TN ratios, carbon and nitrogen isotopes (δ13C, δ15N) and provide estimates of the contribution of terrestrial organic carbon (terrOC) based on the δ13C isotopic values.The results show that interannual SPM distribution and elemental-isotopic characteristics of POC differ significantly between the western biogeochemical province (WBP; West of 165oE) and the eastern biogeochemical province (EBP; East of 165oE) of the ESS. The SPM mean concentration in the WBP is almost an order of magnitude higher than in the EBP. From west-to-east of the ESS, SPM tends to become more depleted in δ15N, while the δ13C becomes isotopically heavier. This trend can be explained by a shift in organic matter sources from terrigenous origin (erosion of the coastal ice complex and riverine POC) to becoming dominantly from marine plankton.The maximum contribution of terrOC to POC reached 99% in parts of the WBP, but accounts for as low as 1% in parts of the EBP. At the same time, the type of atmospheric circulation and its associated regime of both water circulation and ice transport control a displacement of the semi-stable biogeochemical border between WBP and EBP to the east or to the west if compared to its long-term average position near 165oE. Our multi-year investigation provides a robust observational basis for better understanding of the transport and fate of terrigenous material upon entering the ESS shelf waters. Our results also provide deeper insights into the interaction in the land-shelf sea system of the largest shelf sea system of the World Ocean, the East Siberian Arctic Shelf system.

Human activities changed organic carbon transport in Chinese rivers during 2004-2018

Rivers serve as regulators of global climate by releasing greenhouse gases, burying particulate carbon, and connecting different ecosystem carbon pools. However, long-term organic carbon (OC) transport features across different Asian rivers are not well known due to unavailable data. Based on routinely monitored environmental and hydrological data during 2004-2018, this study investigated the spatiotemporal variations in dissolved (DOC) and particulate OC (POC) transport across 41 rivers in China. Across different rivers, both DOC (1.35 – 16.8 mg/L) and POC (0.27 – 4.48 mg/L) concentrations covered wide ranges. The DOC content was high in the north and low in the south, with significantly higher (t test, p < 0.01) values for rivers north of 30°N (5.39 ± 3.66 mg/L vs. 2.39 ± 1.14 mg/L). Human activities greatly influenced the riverine DOC and POC distributions. The riverine ammonia nitrogen (NH+ 4-N) content was positively correlated with DOC (r = 0.81 and p < 0.01) and explained 85.59% of its spatial variation. High vegetation coverage had significant effects on decreasing the riverine POC content, with r = -0.55 and p < 0.05. During 2004-2018, water pollution prevention and control strategies decreased DOC concentrations in 60.98% of rivers; meanwhile, anthropogenic vegetation restoration and dam construction led to POC content decreases in 90.48% of rivers. Importantly, along with DOC and POC changes, increasing DOC/POC ratios were found in 90.48% of the rivers, with 42.86% being significant, which indicated that Chinese rivers are losing their Asian features of low DOC/POC ratios due to artificial disturbance. This study is significant for accurately quantifying greenhouse gas emissions, carbon burial, and OC export to estuaries by Chinese rivers.

Damming alters the particulate organic carbon sources, burial, export and estuarine biogeochemistry of rivers

The long-term changes in composition and export of particulate organic carbon (POC) by rivers due to dam construction are poorly known. Based on observations, incubation experiments and modelling, this study analyzed the sources, spatial and temporal distribution and annual export of POC in the Changjiang River during recent decades to explore the POC changes due to dam construction. Changes in POC composition resulted from both increasing POC sequestration and carbon fixation in the river basin. The allochthonous POC (from terrestrial input) export by the Changjiang River to its estuary decreased by ∼90% between 1956 and 2002 and 2013–2019. We estimated that 2.3 ± 0.5 Mt C/yr allochthonous POC has been sequestered in the Changjiang watershed since 2013. The autochthonous (entirely from in-stream riverine primary production) contribution increased from 1% to 55% of total POC export during the same period due to improved light transparency caused by decreased sediment discharge. Global POC trapping in nine large rivers strongly impacted by dams is 12% of the global riverine POC export. The reduced POC export and increase in labile autochthonous POC strongly impact the estuarine carbon cycle. Therefore, with continued dam construction in the future, important changes in the riverine and estuarine carbon cycle can be expected.

Global patterns of particulate organic carbon export from land to the ocean

AbstractGlobal rivers and streams are important carbon transport pathways from land to the ocean. However, few studies have quantified terrigenous carbon dynamics in river ecosystems and its variations due to climate change and anthropogenic perturbations. Therefore, our study analysed fluvial particulate organic carbon (POC) and developed a processed‐based model (TRIPLEX‐HYDRA) to simulate the production, transport and removal (i.e., deposition, degradation and dam retention) processes of fluvial POC along the land–ocean aquatic continuum (LOAC). Based on our results, approximately 0.29 Pg of POC is exported from land to the ocean through rivers each year. More specifically, we found that rivers at low latitudes (30°S–30°N, 0.18 Pg yr−1) and high northern latitudes (60°N–90°N, 0.05 Pg yr−1) had higher POC fluxes compared to rivers in other regions. This high POC flux is related to strong erosion rates and high soil organic carbon storage. Additionally, our model simulation revealed that total POC flux from global river has not significantly changed from 1983 to 2015 but displays markedly decreased or increased trend at regional scale. These regional variations in POC export are affected by climate warming and dam construction. Moreover, approximately 0.46 Pg of POC is deposited or trapped by dams along the LOAC system, which plays a vital role in the global river carbon budget. Although some limitations and uncertainties remain, this study establishes a theoretical and methodological basis for quantifying riverine POC dynamics in the LOAC system.

The unravelling of radiocarbon composition of organic carbon in river sediments to document past anthropogenic impacts on river systems

As carriers of dissolved and particulate loads that connect continental surfaces to oceans, river systems play a major role in the global carbon cycle. Indeed, riverine particulate organic carbon (POC) is a melange of various origins characterized by their own 14C labeling. In addition, civil nuclear activities have brought new 14C source that remains poorly documented. We propose to unravel the Δ14C value of POC stored in a sedimentary archive collected downstream the most nuclearized European rivers (the Loire River). We postulate that riverine POC is a mixture of aquatic POC (which could be impacted by the liquid discharge from nuclear industry), terrestrial and petrogenic POC. With a combination of radiocarbon measurements, POC analyses and the palynofacies method, we assessed the respective Δ14C value of the POC origins. The gaps between the Δ14C values of the sedimentary POC and those of the atmosphere were the result of the dilution from dead-C, the freshwater reservoir effect imprinting the Δ14C of aquatic POC and the age and transit time of terrestrial POC within the catchment. Importantly, we consider that the unravelling of radiocarbon composition of riverine POC could be useful to determine either the transit time of material from source to sink, some past industrial or natural events, the resilience of the river system and milestones of the social and economic trajectory of a catchment. For the last three decades, riverine sediments could also act as a source of radiocarbon for the atmosphere.

Multiple controls on carbon dynamics in mixed karst and non-karst mountainous rivers, Southwest China, revealed by carbon isotopes (δ13C and Δ14C)

Riverine transport of carbon from the land to the oceans plays a significant role in global carbon cycle. However, multiple processes can affect aquatic carbon cycling, and the carbon sources and processing in river systems are still elusive. Here, we analysed the water chemistry and dual carbon isotopes (δ13C and Δ14C) of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) from mixed karst and non-karst subtropical monsoonal catchments, southwest China. The water chemistry of the river water showed that DIC concentrations were mainly controlled by carbonate weathering and modulated by agricultural activities and geomorphic characteristics (i.e. elevation and slope), but the stable isotope of DIC (δ13CDIC) was highly affected by CO2 outgassing and in-stream photosynthesis. The C/N ratios and stable isotope of POC (δ13CPOC) indicated that the composition of riverine POC derived from a mixture of terrestrial sources and algae/microbial sources. Based on the δ13C and Δ14C of POC, we used a Bayesian mixing model to constrain the POC sources, which showed that aquatic photosynthesis was the main source for POC. Our findings suggest that carbon dynamics in subtropical rivers are highly affected by aquatic photosynthesis, which has significant implications on carbon cycling within river systems.

Estimating particulate organic carbon flux in a highly dynamic estuary using satellite data and numerical modeling

Quantitative estimates of the flux, transportation, and burial of riverine particulate organic carbon (POC) in estuaries and shelf areas are crucial for understanding the carbon cycle in marginal seas. The complexity of the hydrodynamic environment and estuarine processes in the Changjiang River estuary (CRE) results in a POC flux with high spatiotemporal variability. In this study, we proposed a new method for time series monitoring of riverine POC flux by combining satellite ocean color and numerical modeling data. We used 500-m resolution geostationary satellite data from the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) to retrieve surface POC concentrations in the CRE and used the numerical Finite Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM) to simulate three-dimensional (3D) current and sediment distribution. Diurnal, seasonal, and annual variations in POC flux through the lower reaches (Datong Hydrological Station), upper estuary (Xuliujing Hydrological Station), and outlets of the CRE, as well as transportation and deposition outside the CRE, were examined from July 2011 to June 2018. The annual mean POC fluxes through the Datong, Xuliujing, and outlet sections were 1.16 ± 0.16 Tg C/yr, 1.29 ± 0.11 Tg C/yr, and 1.17 ± 0.11 Tg C/yr, respectively. After passing through the estuary, 35.2% of POC was deposited in the sandbar outside the outlets, 52.9% was transported to the south, and a small amount entered the eastern shelf. Thus, these results indicated that POC flux through the river and estuary sections differed from the effective riverine POC flux into the sea. The proposed method combining high spatiotemporal-resolution satellite data and numerical modeling not only makes full use of their advantages, but also reduces the uncertainty of their individual estimates. This approach also supports long-term monitoring of riverine fluxes to the sea and helps clarify the effects of terrestrial inputs on marginal seas under multiple stresses from human activities and climate change.

Export of particulate organic carbon by the mountainous tropical rivers of Western Ghats, India: Variations and controls

Transport of organic carbon by small mountainous rivers is essential, but the poorly constrained component of the global carbon cycle. In the current research, we sampled and analyzed particulate organic carbon (POC) contents from 70 sizeable tropical coastal rivers, draining the Western Ghats (WG) of India. This study aimed to investigate the spatiotemporal variability in POC contents, to estimate flux and to identify environmental controls on POC sources and transport characteristics across the region. The averaged value of organic carbon (OC) in the particulate samples is 3.24%, and the mean POC concentration is 2.86 mg l−1. We classified the samples based on total suspended matter (TSM) classes for source appropriation. Litter/riparian (42.5%) pools are the largest source of organic matter, followed by autochthonous (36%) and soil (21.5%) for the WG region. However, locally autochthonous sources contribute exceptionally to POC pools, indicating a favorable environmental condition for the growth of algae and phytoplankton. Land-use & land-cover, climate, topography, and sediment erosion seems to be determining the local variability in sources to POC pools and fluxes. The POC export rates suggest that within the region, the POC yields of the Deccan Trap (DT) and the Western Dharwar Craton (WDC) blocks are about two times higher than that of the Southern Granulite Terrain (SGT) region. With POC yield of 7.0 g m−2 yr−1, this region exports 0.79 Tg C (~ 0.5% of the global POC) to the Arabian Sea annually. The POC flux of the WG region (covering 0.25% of Asia's land area) is approximately 1.0% of Asia's riverine POC flux to the ocean.

Transformation of DIC into POC in a karst river system: evidence from δ13CDIC and δ13CPOC in Lijiang, Southwest China

One of the most important questions in the science of global carbon cycle is how to balance the atmospheric CO2 budget. However, there is a large terrestrial carbon sink is missing. The locations, magnitudes, variations, and mechanisms responsible for this terrestrial missing carbon sink are uncertain and the focus of much continuing debate. In order to provide a basis for the assessment of carbonate weathering-related carbon sink, this study investigated the spatial and temporal variations of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and particulate organic carbon (POC), and used stable carbon isotopes and hydrochemical data to quantitatively estimate the proportion of DIC transformation to POC and analyze the potential influence of the transformation of DIC into OC on the carbon isotope composition in the Lijiang River (typical karst surface water), Southwest China. The results showed that DIC concentrations are high in winter and low in summer and increase from upstream to downstream. POC concentrations are high in summer and low in spring. δ13CPOC and δ13CDIC are negatively correlated in the Lijiang River. The δ13CDIC values are high in spring and low in summer, compared with the estimated δ13CDIC(cal.); the observed δ13CDIC values have a maximum positive shift in spring and similar in the summer; the δ13CPOC values decrease from upstream to downstream, and are high in summer and low in spring. These observations indicate that the isotopic compositions of both DIC and POC are significantly affected by aquatic photosynthesis that transforms DIC into OC. In-river primary production contribute 12–54% of POC, and the contributions of carbonate rock-sourced DIC to the riverine POC range from 7 to 30%, which suggests an important sink of atmospheric CO2 in river systems and should be taken into account in global carbon cycle.

Sources and radiocarbon ages of organic carbon in different grain size fractions of Yellow River-transported particles and coastal sediments

The elemental (TOC, TN and C/N) and carbon isotope (Δ14C and δ13C) compositions of organic matter were measured in different grain size fractions of particles transported by the Yellow River and surface sediments in the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea. In the riverine particle and sediment samples, high OC contents were associated with small grain size fractions consisting mainly of clay minerals. The δ13C and Δ14C values of the bulk riverine particulate organic carbon (POC) collected from the Lijin and Xiaolangdi sites were relatively constant but varied significantly (−21.9‰ to −26.0‰ and −325‰ to −620‰, respectively) among the different size fractions. In comparison, large spatial variations in δ13C (−20.6‰ to −24.5‰) and Δ14C (−188‰ to −646‰) values, which increased seaward due to the difference in source carbon, were found for bulk TOC Δ14C preserved in the surface sediments, but no significant differences were observed among the values in the different size fractions in most sediments. The different carbon isotopic values of the riverine POC and sedimentary TOC reflect differences in the sources, degradation and cycling time scales of the OC. The Yellow River exports very old (5220 ± 295 yrs) POC that is much older than the TOC (2457 ± 676 yrs) preserved in the surface sediments in the Bohai and Yellow seas. Calculations using a dual-isotope three end-member model indicate that pre-aged soil OC and ancient fossil OC represent major proportions (57 ± 16% and 30 ± 8%, respectively) of the riverine POC and that terrestrial biomass OC represents a minor proportion (13 ± 11%). The drainage environment of the river plays important roles in controlling the sources and ages of the riverine POC. In contrast, the TOC in the grain size fractions of the surface sediments in the Bohai and Yellow seas is dominated by marine-derived modern OC (47 ± 13%), followed by pre-aged soil OC (29 ± 9%) and ancient fossil OC (25 ± 14%). The ages of the TOC are determined mainly by the source input, rapid sedimentation, sediment minerology and decomposition of OC during early diagenesis in these large river-influenced marginal seas.

Modeling riverine dissolved and particulate organic carbon fluxes from two small watersheds in the northeastern United States

The coupled carbon (C) cycle across terrestrial and aquatic environments at the watershed scale has been identified as an important, but poorly constrained component of the global carbon budget. Here, we extended Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) with coupled riverine particulate organic carbon (POC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) modules (referred to as SWAT-C hereafter). Results show that SWAT-C reproduced daily POC and DOC fluxes well in two watersheds in the Northeastern United States. We found that SWAT-C tended to underestimate high flows and peak DOC and POC fluxes. Uncertainty analysis indicated flux uncertainties associated with POC and DOC simulations were larger than those for flow simulation. Sensitive parameters controlling POC and DOC biogeochemical processes were identified along with how these parameters influence mechanisms underlying C cycling. We anticipate that the tool developed and applied here will inform C related ecosystem services in watershed assessment and planning.

Temporal and spatial trends in marine carbon isotopes in the Arctic Ocean and implications for food web studies.

The Arctic is undergoing unprecedented environmental change. Rapid warming, decline in sea ice extent, increase in riverine input, ocean acidification and changes in primary productivity are creating a crucible for multiple concurrent environmental stressors, with unknown consequences for the entire arctic ecosystem. Here, we synthesized 30 years of data on the stable carbon isotope (δ13C) signatures in dissolved inorganic carbon (δ13C‐DIC; 1977–2014), marine and riverine particulate organic carbon (δ13C‐POC; 1986–2013) and tissues of marine mammals in the Arctic. δ13C values in consumers can change as a result of environmentally driven variation in the δ13C values at the base of the food web or alteration in the trophic structure, thus providing a method to assess the sensitivity of food webs to environmental change. Our synthesis reveals a spatially heterogeneous and temporally evolving δ13C baseline, with spatial gradients in the δ13C‐POC values between arctic shelves and arctic basins likely driven by differences in productivity and riverine and coastal influence. We report a decline in δ13C‐DIC values (−0.011‰ per year) in the Arctic, reflecting increasing anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) in the Arctic Ocean (i.e. Suess effect), which is larger than predicted. The larger decline in δ13C‐POC values and δ13C in arctic marine mammals reflects the anthropogenic CO2 signal as well as the influence of a changing arctic environment. Combining the influence of changing sea ice conditions and isotopic fractionation by phytoplankton, we explain the decadal decline in δ13C‐POC values in the Arctic Ocean and partially explain the δ13C values in marine mammals with consideration of time‐varying integration of δ13C values. The response of the arctic ecosystem to ongoing environmental change is stronger than we would predict theoretically, which has tremendous implications for the study of food webs in the rapidly changing Arctic Ocean.

Modern and late Pleistocene particulate organic carbon transport by the Amazon River: Insights from long-chain alkyl diols

The relative abundance of the C32 1,15 long-chain alkyl diol (LCD) is an emerging proxy for the input of riverine aquatic particulate organic carbon (POC) into coastal oceans. This compound has the potential to complement other established proxies reflecting riverine terrestrial POC input and allows for a more nuanced assessment of riverine POC export to coastal seas. The current understanding of this proxy is, however, limited. In this study, we compare different indices for riverine sediment input to coastal marine waters (i.e. C32 1,15-LCD, BIT index and Fe/Ca ratio) in a source-to-sink assessment in the Amazon River drainage system and the northeast South American continental margin, and we test their down-core applicability in a marine gravity core containing late Pleistocene fluvial Amazonian sediments. We show that the relative abundance of the C32 1,15-LCD is highest in water bodies with low flow velocity and low turbidity such as the downstream portion of lowland tributaries and floodplain lakes. Relative C32 1,15-LCD abundance is lowest in Andean white water tributaries where autotrophic productivity is hindered by high turbidity and high flow velocity. We also find that suspended particulate matter from all major tributaries during the extreme 2015 dry season has a similar LCD distribution to that of floodplain lakes. This indicates that the chemical composition of the tributaries is less relevant for the LCD distribution than their physical properties such as flow velocity and turbidity. Results from marine surface sediments offshore the Amazon River estuary show significant positive correlations between all three studied proxies. In contrast, we find that the relative C32 1,15-LCD abundance in the down-core record is anti-correlated to the BIT index and Fe/Ca ratio. While BIT index and Fe/Ca ratio show high (low) values during Heinrich stadials (Dansgaard-Oeschger interstadials), the C32 1,15-LCD proxy shows the opposite signal. BIT values are also higher during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 2 than during MIS 3, in contrast to trends in the C32 1,15-LCD proxy. We posit that this pattern arises from a reduction in relative C32 1,15-LCD abundance and total LCD productivity in the Amazon River during MIS 2 when less-humid conditions and lower sea level led to reduced area of floodplains. During Heinrich stadials, Andean sediment input increased and led to higher turbidity that resulted in lower C32 1,15-LCD production. Our study shows that major changes in water discharge, sediment transport and river morphology can lead to discrepancies between the BIT index and the relative abundance of the C32 1,15-LCD. Thus, we suggest that Amazonian aquatic and terrestrial POC pools had contrasting responses to changes related to both climate (e.g. increased Andean precipitation) and river morphology (e.g. steeper along-channel slope due to falling and low stand sea level).
