Digitalization and the Emerging Risk of Delinquency Among Emerging Adults Raised in a Wired World

Globally, the digital age has immensely contributed to the evolution and emergence of delinquency and social problems among emerging adults. As excellent as the tremendous benefits that technology has afforded these generations of youths raised in a wired world, some have decided to engage in the dark side of computer technology. The main aim of the study is to explore the how problematic internet use can influence development of delinquent behaviour among emerging adults in higher school of learning. It also explored the role of household financial capabilities of the emerging adults. The study adopted convenient sampling method to select n=386; (50.5% males and 49.5% females) who were aged between 16-27 years from University of Lagos. This cross-sectional study administered standardized instruments to examine the variables (Problematic internet use questionnaire, Disciplinary and delinquent behaviour survey) Result showed no significant difference between problematic internet use and emerging adult delinquency (t(384) = -1.29 P> .05), also, no significant difference between the delinquency of participants from high or low income earners, t(373) = -1.93, P> .05). Therefore, it is expedient to develop safety guidelines that will serve as interplay between digitalization and delinquency in which emerging adults must exercise restraint and broader range of delinquency can be confirmed among other samples.

Unpacking the Links Between Community Violence, Delinquency, and Illicit Substance Use Among College Students: The Role of PTSS and Code of the Streets

ABSTRACT Community violence (CV) is a serious public health concern. To date, most of the existing research has focused on youth of color living in high-risk environments. The prior literature has shown that CV-exposed youth are at risk for post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), delinquency, and substance use. CV has also been tied to beliefs about violence being an acceptable way of resolving conflict, referred to as the Code of the Streets (COS). It is unclear how the trajectories of other CV-exposed populations may differ from vulnerable youth, including college students who are in a developmental period associated with high-risk for violence exposure. The study objectives were therefore to: 1) examine the relations between CV and delinquency (i.e. gang involvement, arrest, weapon ownership) and illicit substance use, as well as 2) investigate whether there are indirect effects between CV and both delinquency and illicit substance use through PTSS and COS beliefs among college students. The sample included 547 students from two universities (M age = 20.31, SD = 2.08, Range = 18–28; 80.8% female; 57.8% White). CV was associated with delinquency and illicit substance use. COS beliefs had an indirect effect on the relation between CV and delinquency, but PTSS did not. Conversely, PTSS had an indirect effect on the link between CV and illicit substance use, but COS did not. College students are at risk for CV exposure and adverse outcomes. Interventions addressing PTSS and COS beliefs may be central to mitigating delinquent behaviors and illicit substance use in this population.

Risk and Protective Factors of Juvenile Delinquency among Youth Exposed to Political Conflict: The Role of Social Resistance

AbstractPrevious studies have identified diverse risk and protective factors of youth involvement in delinquency. However, less is known about the causes of this phenomenon in the context of political conflict. Drawing from theoretical frameworks emphasizing the notion of social resistance, in the current study we examine the risk and protective factors of juvenile delinquency in the context of majority–minority political conflict. Applying multilevel analysis to survey data provided by a representative sample of 814 Arab youth from East Jerusalem, we find that, although this behaviour shares similar lines with juvenile delinquency in regular contexts, in the context of political conflict it bears a unique core of resistance to the social order. Specifically, we find that a strong predictor of juvenile delinquency is attitudes towards political violence, whereas, surprisingly, attitudes towards general violence do not have a significant effect. Our findings suggest that juvenile delinquency in the context of social conflict stems, at least partially, from a unique mechanism of resistance towards political order.

Junior high school students are entering a transitional age or puberty which causes them to be in a state of needing recognition and searching for identity so that they are very vulnerable to environmental influences. This causes the risk of juvenile delinquency. PAI (islamic religion) teachers have a very important role to provide religious and spiritual guidance for students to build character and morals. This research was conducted at SMPN 5 Sidoarjo. The method used is qualitative with a naturalistic positivistic approach with data collection techniques through interviews, documentation and literature review. The results of this study are that the form of juvenile delinquency in SMPN 5 Sidoarjo students is classified as low delinquency. PAI teachers have contributed and played a major role in handling student delinquency, namely carrying out spiritual guidance programs on a scheduled basis. The supporting factors are students with Islamic religion being the majority and the inhibiting factors are carelessness in supervision and differences in student character.

Relationship between Perceived Maternal Rejection and Neuroticism Delinquency Risk Trait among Female Juvenile Delinquents in Selected Rehabilitation Institutions in Kenya

Juvenile delinquency has been a major problem in most parts of the world including Kenya due to its complexities attributed to its dynamic nature among different categories of children. Gender-based delinquency prevalence studies have identified female juvenile delinquency to be a developing key delinquency challenge as compared to male juvenile delinquency. In addition, research indicates that female juvenile delinquents are more prone to mental health problems attributed to incarceration experiences as compared to male juvenile delinquents. The need to focus more on female juvenile delinquency risk and protective factors studies is thus crucial so as to unravel the prevailing juvenile female delinquency complexities. The purpose of the study was therefore to examine the relationship between perceived maternal rejection and neuroticism delinquency risk trait among female juvenile delinquents in selected rehabilitation institutions in Kenya. Interpersonal Acceptance-Rejection Theory (IPARTheory) was identified to be the key theory that provided the theoretical framework for this study. The research was a correlational study and employed a survey research design in data collection. The study involved 186 female juvenile delinquents incarcerated in selected rehabilitation institutions in Kenya. Purposive sampling was used to select the three government girls’ rehabilitation institutions in Kenya involved in this study. Maternal Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire and Neuroticism Questionnaire were used to collect data. The Statistical Package for Social Scientist (SPSS) version 25 aided in the analysis of quantitative data. To establish the levels of perceived maternal rejection and neuroticism, the data were subjected to descriptive statistics analysis for calculations of percentages, means and frequencies. The data was also subjected to inferential statistical analysis and employed Spearman’s Rank correlation to establish the relationship between maternal rejection and neuroticism. The analyzed data was then presented in form of tables. The study findings indicated that the participants perceived more of maternal rejection than acceptance (M = 163.8) and significantly high levels of neuroticism (M = 28.33). The study found that there was a moderate positive correlation between the perceived maternal rejection and neuroticism [rs(186) = .565, p < .001] among its participants. Understanding of this relationship and its moderators can help in designing accurate female juvenile delinquency prevention and treatment programs.

Adolescent delinquency following co-occurring childhood head injuries and conduct problem symptoms: findings from a UK longitudinal birth cohort

Childhood conduct problems and head injuries share a bidirectional association, but how this affects the risk of adolescent delinquency is unknown. Due to their similar underlying mechanisms (i.e. increased impulsivity), this study aims to identify whether their co-occurrence increases the risk of adolescent delinquency. Data was obtained from 11,272 children at age 14 and 10,244 at age 17 years enrolled in the UK Millennium Cohort Study. Conduct problem symptoms (via the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire) and head injuries were parent reported from ages 3 to 14 years. Delinquency was self-reported at ages 14 and 17 including substance use, criminality, and antisocial behaviour. Incident rate ratios (IRR) were estimated for delinquency at ages 14 and 17 by childhood conduct problem and head injury status. Co-occurring head injuries and high conduct problem symptoms presented the greatest risk for overall delinquency and substance use at age 14 compared to those with the presence of one or neither (IRRs from 1.20 to 1.60). At age 17, conduct problems (with or without co-occurring head injuries) presented the greatest risk for overall delinquency, substance use, and antisocial behaviour. There was no evidence for an increased risk of delinquency at ages 14 or 17 following a head injury only. Whilst these findings suggest childhood head injuries alone do not increase the risk of adolescent delinquency, when co-occurring alongside high conduct problem symptoms there is a heightened earlier risk. These results provide further insight into adolescent delinquency and the outcomes of co-occurring childhood head injury and conduct problem symptoms.

THE ANALYSIS OF PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR ON ISLAMIC ADOLESCENT FROM SINGLE PARENT FAMILIES

This study aims in general to describe the passive-aggressive behavior adolescents can develop from the parenting pattern of single-parent families. Adolescents who live with a single parent have a risk of delinquency compared to adolescents who are cared for by intact parents. The condition of adolescents who are raised by single parents causes children not to be used to expressing their thoughts and feelings freely. This type of research is quantitative research with a descriptive approach. Data analysis in this study was obtained through a passive-aggressive behavior questionnaire with a Likert scale with a sample of 36 students from single parent families at SMKN 1 Enam Lingkung. The results of the study show that passive-aggressive behavior is in the high category, which means that students have passive-aggressive behavior that needs to be intervened so that students can avoid maladaptive behavior. The school responding to that issue immediately by teachers in schools, especially BK teachers in the implementation of services to reduce passive-aggressive to help students develop more optimally.

Influencing Factors of Youths Antisocial Behavior

The causes behind the antisocial crimes young people encounter in life are discussed and analyzed in this review. Although the final manifestations of criminal behavior vary, most young peoples antisocial crimes are originated from their childhood experiences. This article discussed the causes of antisocial crimes from two perspectives: the anatomy of the root behavior through reflection because of the genetic and biological background and acquired environmental reasons (family factors: domestic violence, education methods, the relationship between parents) and individual psychological problems. Antisocial behaviors emerge during adolescence and young adulthood, which is different from personality. The aim of the article is to review the effect of negative healthy growth environment on youths antisocial behavior by outlining classical theoretical frameworks concerning the various pathways and processes that may place young people at higher risk of delinquency. The findings of influencing factors, with particular reference to family function and parenting, social environment and the mediating effect on individual psychological causes and why lead to the emergence of criminal behavior, understanding and prediction of antisocial criminal behavior through the prediction of innate and acquired environment.

Adolescents in therapeutic residential care: treatment needs and characteristics

ABSTRACT Despite the growing body of literature examining the complex needs of adolescents in residential care populations, few studies have investigated the specific treatment needs and characteristics of adolescents in therapeutic residential care (TRC). This study aimed to describe and compare risk, need and responsivity factors in a national sample of 737 juveniles (63% males, mean age = 16.2) who displayed serious behavioural problems. The study utilised comprehensive assessment data, including demographic information, clinical variables, and risk factors assessed with the Youth Level of Service/Case management Inventory (YLS/CMI). Sample characteristics were explored, and three subgroups were compared: adolescents with serious substance abuse, adolescents with a high risk of continued delinquency and adolescents with low/moderate risk. The sample showed complex needs in multiple criminogenic domains and substantial mental health problems. Subgroups were clearly differentiated by the YLS/CMI risk profile and several demographic attributes; however, most clinical variables concerning mental health overlapped between groups. The findings suggest that TRC interventions should be aimed at reducing the risk of persistent delinquency and structured according to the principles of risk, need and responsivity. The study has important clinical implications for how differentiated services can tailor interventions to group-based needs and characteristics.

Internet of Things and Blockchain-Based Smart Contracts: Enabling Continuous Risk Monitoring and Assessment in Peer-to-Peer Lending

ABSTRACT Peer-to-peer (P2P) lending enables individuals and small companies to finance and invest without the intermediation of financial institutions. However, this business model is also associated with high delinquency risk and a lack of risk monitoring and control capabilities. This paper explores the potential of the Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, smart contract technologies, and the Continuous Risk Monitoring and Assessment (CRMA) framework to re-engineer risk monitoring and control for P2P lending. We conducted a case study of a large Chinese P2P lending company to identify problems in its current risk monitoring and control processes and to design an IoT-smart contract CRMA system to continuously monitor and respond to delinquency risk via real-time data collection, automatic loan settlement, and in-time risk disclosure. Linked head injury and conduct problem symptom pathways from early childhood to adolescence and their associated risks: Evidence from the millennium cohort study.

Conduct problems and head injuries increase the risk of delinquency and share a bidirectional association. However, how they link across development is unknown. The present study aimed to identify their linked developmental pathways and associated risk factors. Latent class analysis was modeled from Millennium Cohort Study data (n = 8,600) to identify linked pathways of conduct problem symptoms and head injuries. Head injuries were parent-reported from ages 3 to 14 and conduct problems from ages 3 to 17 using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Multinomial logistic regression then identified various risk factors associated with pathway membership. Four distinct pathways were identified. Most participants displayed low-level conduct problem symptoms and head injuries (n = 6,422; 74.7%). Three groups were characterized by clinically relevant levels of conduct problem symptoms and high-risk head injuries in childhood (n = 1,422; 16.5%), adolescence (n = 567; 6.6%), or persistent across development (n = 189; 2.2%). These clinically relevant pathways were associated with negative maternal parenting styles. These findings demonstrate how pathways of conduct problem symptoms are uniquely linked with distinct head injury pathways. Suggestions for general preventative intervention targets include early maternal negative parenting styles. Pathway-specific interventions are also required targeting cumulative risk at different ecological levels.

Background: Juvenile delinquency in Bangladesh refers to the involvement of minors in criminal activities or behaviors that violate societal norms. It is a complex issue influenced by various factors, including socioeconomic disparities, family dysfunction, peer influence, substance abuse, and mental health issues. The prevalence of juvenile delinquency poses significant challenges for the country, affecting the well-being of young individuals and the overall safety of communities. Understanding the causes and consequences of juvenile delinquency is essential for developing effective prevention and intervention strategies that address the unique social, economic, and cultural context of Bangladesh. Objectives: The purpose of this research is to identify the Causes and Consequences of Juvenile Delinquency in Bangladesh. Methods: The study's data came from Scopus and Google Scholar, PUBMED articles that were published between 2015 and 2022. To find further studies, the reference lists of all included studies and pertinent systematic reviews were examined. All searches were limited to just human research and the English language. This systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Results: The results of 9 studies, selected at random, indicate that highlights the significant role of socioeconomic factors, such as low family income and parental education, in increasing the risk of delinquency. It underscores the need for targeted social support programs, educational opportunities, and economic empowerment to address these disparities. Additionally, family dysfunction, peer influence, substance abuse, and mental health issues are identified as key contributors to delinquency, emphasizing the importance of interventions aimed at strengthening families, promoting positive peer networks, addressing substance abuse, and providing mental health support. Up in Smoke: The Impacts of Marijuana During Pregnancy.

Numerous drugs ingested during pregnancy can impact the developing fetus. Although some effects are apparent at birth as overt teratogenicity or profound neonatal withdrawal, others become apparent only after a careful long-term follow-up into childhood. Shifting legal and cultural attitudes toward marijuana have led to increased use during pregnancy. This shift should prompt health care providers to carefully consider the drug's mechanism of action, its interaction with the placenta, and the potential consequences of fetal exposure. The primary psychoactive compound in marijuana is Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which agonizes endogenous cannabinoid receptors. Cannabinoid receptors are present in the fetal brain early in gestation and appear to have an important role in the developing central nervous system. THC crosses the placenta in sufficient quantities to raise concerns about exogenous exposure during fetal development. Robust follow-up studies suggest that marijuana use during pregnancy contributes to suboptimal fetal growth. At school age, heavy prenatal marijuana exposure predicts challenges in executive function (specifically, memory and reasoning) and externalizing behavior (e.g., hyperactivity and inattention). Memory and behavioral problems persist into early adulthood. These challenges coincide with a higher risk of heavy marijuana use in offspring. In concert with a suboptimal environment, young adults may experience a higher risk of global cognitive impairment and/or delinquency. Importantly, these adverse outcomes appear to be mitigated by postnatal factors including home environment. Ongoing studies in the modern era will be vital to enhance our understanding of the mechanisms by which THC impacts the fetus and confirm or refute knowledge regarding long-term impact. This knowledge will inform both health care providers and parents in collaborative decision-making to optimize the outcome of children.

The Influence of Child and Adolescent Education on Juvenile Delinquency

The educational process plays a vital role in human development, cultivating a better future from childhood. The topic of juvenile delinquency, which is on the rise, is one of the difficult issues attracting the attention of many psychologists and educators. Young criminals are not stereotyped to be bad members of society, and the impact of child and adolescent education may contribute to their misbehavior. Juvenile delinquents' education since childhood, such as family and school education, affects their behavioral changes and individual values as they mature. Varied social changes and surroundings impact the rate of juvenile delinquents. This study explores the influence of child and adolescent education on juvenile delinquency in three aspects: the effect of family education, school education, and social environment. A qualified family education, such as educational levels, familial environment, and neighborhood environment, shapes children's good values from a young age, preventing the occurrence of juvenile delinquency. School education equipped with moral education courses, positive teacher-student relationships in school, and a democratic learning environment creates a better curriculum to educate children and adolescents to step into society, lowering the risk of juvenile delinquency. Children's development and behaviors are also influenced by social surroundings, including social insecurity, historical and cultural context, and child socialization. In addition to corrective measures and evidence-based practices in juvenile detention facilities, additional steps, like mandating more effective transition planning, are necessary and urgent. These include aftercare to give them access to basic education or employment opportunities after release, assisting them in better reintegrating into society and making their contributions. A successful reentry into the community requires an effective transition procedure and high-quality support services.

360 Degree Real Time Risk Assessment of Business for Reliable Supply Chain Operations - Business Credibility Product

Currently, small and medium-sized businesses often rely on outdated financial data and anecdotal information to assess their business risk. Large organizations may use historical financial statements and ratings provided by rating agencies, which are paid by these institutions, leading to a lack of efficiency and accuracy in assessing business credibility. This can prevent SMBs from becoming suppliers to large companies, accessing working capital credit, and increase the risk of fraud or delinquency in transactions with large corporations. Participating in a parenting intervention in prison, perceptions from incarcerated fathers and mothers-A convergent mixed-methods study.

Children of incarcerated parents run a high risk of ill-health and future delinquency, whereas positive parenting can support children's healthy development. The For Our Children's Sake (FOCS) parenting intervention for parents in prison was evaluated as a controlled trial during 2019-2021 within The Swedish Prison and Probation Service (SPPS). This study reports on the process evaluation and aimed to describe how parents perceived their participation and aspects that influenced implementation of the FOCS intervention. This convergent mixed-methods study (QUAL + quan) included qualitative interview data after participation in the FOCS intervention group (12 parents), and quantitative questionnaire data from intervention and control groups (46 parents). Qualitative data were analysed using inductive qualitative content analysis and quantitative data using descriptive and non-parametric statistics. An integrated synthesis of the qualitative and quantitative results showed three joint concepts that provided an extended understanding of the importance of a child and parent focused intervention available to parents in prison, where FOCS was perceived as the only place where inmates could openly reflect, and express sensitive feelings and thoughts related to the children and being a parent. Also, that the SPPS as an organisation entails partly unsupportive organisational norms with irregular individual staff engagement, which made FOCS invisible in prisons, and the importance of engagement and motivation from all participants and group leaders in the group was essential for a successful FOCS group. This study showed that availability of a child and parent focused intervention in prison is perceived as very important, and at the same time dependent on a trustful relationship in the group to be rewarding to the participants, where organisational norms within the SPSS need amendments for successful implementation of FOCS. These findings can guide further implementation of similar interventions in prison.

Contextualizing Adverse Childhood Experiences: The Intersections of Individual and Community Adversity.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are traumatic childhood events that can undermine youth development, and are linked to chronic health problems, mental illness, and risk-taking behaviors in adulthood. ACEs are preventable, yet effective response strategies require comprehensive conceptualization and measurement of adversity. Although typically measured as individual experiences in the family and home (e.g., abuse, neglect), adversity also exists outside the home, in the many contexts in which youth development unfolds (e.g., communities, neighborhoods). Yet, such contexts and experiences are often absent in ACEs research. Using data from a nationally representative youth sample, this study addresses that gap, advancing a measure that contextualizes individual-level ACEs within social and structural domains of community-level adversity. Among 13,267 youth (mean age = 15.25 [range 12-18]; 51% female; 71% White; 13% Black; 10% Hispanic; 3% Asian; 2% American Indian/Multiracial), 61% and 73% were exposed to at least one individual and community ACE, respectively, while 15% of youth reported severe individual ACE exposure (≥3 ACEs) and 20% were exposed to severe (≥3) community ACEs. All ACE exposures were associated with problem behaviors later in adolescence, but youth reporting both severe individual and community ACEs were especially at high risk for later violence, delinquency, and other health-risk behaviors. These findings highlight that community adversity exacerbates the damaging effects of individual/family adversity and thus should be addressed in efforts to prevent ACEs and reduce their long-term harm.

Personal, Familial, Psychosocial and Behavioral Characteristics of Arab Juvenile Delinquents: The Context of Jordan

Delinquency in adolescence is rooted in a complex multifaceted system that comprises several factors such as personal characteristics, family, school, peers, and community, all of which are embedded in the sociocultural context in which they are present. There is a paucity of research on juvenile delinquency and its risk factors across many regions, especially low- and middle-income countries, including Arab countries. This study aimed to develop an understanding of the personal, familial, and behavioral characteristics of Arab juvenile delinquents in the distinctive sociocultural context of Jordan. All juveniles who were incarcerated at the time of data collection (N = 197) were targeted using a convenience sampling approach from a total of 11 juvenile rehabilitation centers distributed over the northern, middle, and southern regions of the country. Anonymous surveys were used to collect data on juvenile delinquents’ personal, familial, psychosocial, and behavioral characteristics. A total of 186 juvenile delinquents completed the study questionnaire (9.7% females). About 52% were not attending school regularly, 32% had divorced, separated, or deceased parents, 6% reported receiving a diagnosis of mental illness, and 91% reported they never sought psychological support of any kind. Regarding substance consumption, 70% were smokers, 26% were alcohol consumers, and 15% were on drugs. About 12% spent more than 7 h on their cellphones, and 43% reported dedicating no time for physical activity. Theft was the most frequently reported offense (35%), followed by quarreling with peers (25%), and possession of drugs (9%). Approximately 42% reported that their friends encouraged them to cause trouble, while the majority (74%) reported that their school had no positive or negative influence on their behavior. Several behavioral problems were detected, with females showing significantly higher scores in impulsivity, inattention, emotional lability, and social problems compared to their male counterparts. Severity of the conduct problems was negatively associated with the length of engagement in physical activities, while both impulsivity and inattention scores were positively associated with the length of engagement in watching TV and using cellphones (all p < 0.05). Overall, these juvenile delinquents have unsatisfactory academic and schooling experiences, engage in unhealthy lifestyles and exhibit several behavioral problems. Differences in juvenile delinquency risk factors across different sociocultural contexts can influence prevention efforts. Comprehensive prevention strategies that reduce risk and develop protective factors need to target juveniles early in their development and consider factors related to their families, schools, peers, and communities.

Family Intervention in the Treatment of Female Juvenile Delinquency: A Qualitative Study in the Collectivist Society of Malaysia

Aims: The current study explores the benefits of a family intervention program on families and their adolescent children who were convicted as juveniles. Adolescents and their families shared their experiences in joining the program, especially the improvement they made while in the program. Demographics: Research participants included eight adolescents, six mothers, and two fathers. Settings: The program took place in Malaysia's adolescents’ rehabilitation center. Methodology: Data were collected through an in-depth interview with participants. Analysis: Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Findings: Findings revealed five main themes: (1) awareness and insight; (2) Understanding risk and protective factors of delinquency; (3) the opportunity to learn roles in the family; (4) Learning to improve communication skills; and (5) Learning to forgive. Implications: The study provides insight into the importance of family involvement in delinquent adolescents’ rehabilitation and the need to consider the family system approach in counseling delinquent adolescents.
