Does the single tuition fee affect students' academic performance? Evidence from Indonesia

The rise in tuition fees has become a prominent issue in Indonesian education, especially as of 2024. It is still a concern whether the increase in UKT has a relationship with student achievement. This study aimed to determine the differences in student academic achievement based on the single tuition fee (UKT) category and the impact of UKT on student academic achievement. The sample in the study comprised 3643 samples of data on single tuition fees and student cumulative grade point averages from 2021 to 2023. Employing one sample test, ANOVA test, and linear regression analysis, the results showed that students across all UKT categories, from UKT 1 to UKT 6, surpassed the quality target standard GPA of 3.60 at UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta. Second, the average GPA varied significantly across each category, indicating differing academic achievements among the UKT categories. Third, the UKT categories ranked from the highest to lowest score value are UKT Category 6, UKT Category 2, UKT Category 3, UKT Category 1, UKT Category 4, and UKT Category 5. Fourth, the study reveals that UKT does not impact the academic performance of students at UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta, suggesting that other external factors not included in the study variables influence student academic achievement. Thus, increasing or decreasing UKT does not affect students’ academic achievement; instead, other external factors play a significant role in this.

Going the extra mile? General practitioners' upcoding of fees for home visits.

General practitioners' (GPs') income often relies on self-reported activities and performances. They can therefore 'game the system' to maximize their remuneration. We investigate whether Danish GPs game their travel fees for home visits. Combining administrative and geographical data, we measure the difference between GPs' traveled and billed distances. We exploit a rise in the fees for home visits. If there is a link between the rise in fees and upcoding, we interpret this finding as indicative of gaming behavior. We find that upcoding occurs slightly more often than downcoding (16% vs. 13% of visits) for visits that can be both upcoded and downcoded. Using linear probability models with GP fixed effects, we find that the fee rise is associated with a reduction in upcoding of 0.6% of home visits (2.8% for visits where upcoding is feasible) and no change in downcoding. Importantly, we find no statistically significant differences in the reduction in upcoding across distance bands despite large differences in their fee rises. We therefore conclude that there is no causal evidence of GPs gaming their fees.

Price competition in ride-sharing platforms: A duopoly supply chain perspective

A ride-sharing platform with a price-setting power mechanism exists in practice. However, it is unclear how supply chain transactions (ride price) and yields are affected due to a commission fee on ride-sharing platforms. To better understand, this study explores the impact of the service provider’s price-setting (Model S) and service enabler’s price-setting (Model E) power mechanism on supply chain profit under the influence of price competition in a sharing economy. We consider duopoly supply chains, wherein in one supply chain, a service provider delivers service through a service enabler, and in another, service providers offer direct customer service. Mathematical models are developed to analyze the difference in price-setting power mechanism effect, considering marketing efforts under different competitive scenarios. Results show that the supply chain profit is highest when the service provider sets the transaction price in Model S. Furthermore, when the commission fee exceeds a certain threshold (0.5), the total profit in Model E increases, but in Model S it decreases. In ride-sharing platforms, the service provider loses with a rise in commission fees, while the service enabler profits from it. The study contributes to the growing interest in the intricacies of sharing economy businesses.

Municipal amalgamations and local housing prices

In this paper, we examine the relationship between housing prices and municipal amalgamations. Due to consumer preference for access over amenity value, there is a spatial disparity of housing prices, reflecting the value of land in specific locations. According to \citet{tiebout1956} local amenity values will increase if the services of a municipality improve without a comparable rise in taxes or service fees, or if taxes or service fees decrease while the service level remains the same. The bid-rent curve is a framework frequently used to capture a presence of goods or bads such as amenities, disamenities, and externalities. Accordingly, the present study will be used to detect a possible social benefit or loss following amalgamations of municipalities. Macro panel data from Iceland will be used, representing several essential variables of the house market for 79 municipalities in Iceland during the period from 1992 through 2006. The research shows a significant positive relationship, ceteris paribus, between regional municipal amalgamations and local real prices of apartments.

Home sweet home: GPs' response to an increase in the fee size for home visits.

In many health care systems GPs receive fees for their services. Policymakers may use the size of these fees to try to incentivise GPs to provide more care. However, evidence is mixed on whether and how GPs respond to an increase in the fee size. This study investigates how GPs respond to an average increase of 150% in the fee for a high-effort and infrequent service such as a home visit due to patients' illness. We consider Danish GPs' provision of these visits to enlisted patients living outside of nursing homes. Using linear regressions with general practice fixed effects and a rich number of control variables, we estimate the association between GPs' provision of these home visits and the fee rise. On average, we find no association between the fee rise and GPs' provision of home visits. However, we find that GPs who previously provided the fewest home visits to eligible patients increase their provision by 13% after the fee rise compared to other GPs. This increase in visits is driven by more patients receiving multiple visits after the fee rise. We conclude that a fee rise may not yield a strong response in GPs' provision of high-effort and infrequent services such as home visits.

Miner Competition and Transaction Fees

In order to maintain the function of a decentralized financial system like Bitcoin, transaction fees are offered to engage miners in the transaction confirmation process. This paper investigates the effect of miner competition on the equilibrium transaction fees. We develop a game-theoretic model with costly entry into mining activities. We find that miners may strategically assemble fewer transactions into a block to reduce total fees, and as a result, to deter entry. Equilibrium transaction fees also depend on block rewards as a rise in total fees is accompanied by a drop in rewards. Our empirical analysis supports the model's predictions. We provide evidence on the existence of excess capacity in a block, taking into account the random confirmation process. The empirical findings demonstrate that heightened competition tends to increase the block size and total fees. Furthermore, the halving of rewards correlates to a fee hike.

The sky is the limit?! Evaluating the existence of a speculative bubble in European football.

In light of increasing salaries and transfer fees, the present study investigates the existence of a speculative bubble in European football. By applying the Kindleberger–Minsky model to football, we show that developments in recent years do not meet the criteria of a classic bubble. Although transfer fee spending in recent years does meet the typical pattern seen in historical bubbles, the case of football rather resembles an atypical bubble. This is because the rise in transfer fees for most clubs is largely backed by cash inflows, prompting an elevator effect for transfer fees. Typical bubbles, on the other hand, contain heavy debt-financing in the absence of respective and sustainable cash inflows. Nevertheless, despite the absence of a speculative bubble on the aggregated league level, some individual clubs seem to “live in a bubble”. Furthermore, the French and especially Italian leagues should be cautious about overspending. We further discuss the main risk factors that can lead to a turning point in European football’s constant revenue growth, including potential implications of a financial downturn.

Student protests and organised labour: Developing a research agenda for mobilisation in late neoliberalism

Students have a long history of protesting the introduction or rise of tuition fees. However, political parties do not often endorse their demands. Even the centre-left, which is known for its redistributive policies, does not necessarily ally itself with the student opposition to fees. In this article, the author focuses on the impact of social movement–organised labour alliances on the opposition of political parties to government policy. The author argues that such alliances have a unique impact on centre-left parties, especially in relation to non-labour issues. Two examples of this alliance are presented, emerging from the quite different political contexts of Germany and Turkey. In Germany, student movements failed to block the introduction of tuition fees in 2006. However, in 2008–2011, after students established a deeper alliance with organised labour, tuition fees were scrapped. In Turkey, student movements had been protesting tuition fees for a quarter of a century before an alliance with labour gained the support of social democrats in 2011. These case studies suggest that labour–movement alliances are effective in shifting social democratic politics in higher education policy because of labour’s experience and know-how in alliance building with centre-left parties and the student mobilisation’s potential to make tuition fees an electoral issue cross-cutting party allegiances. This finding suggests that scholars need to take the degree of engagement in opposition alliances into account, in addition to union density, in order to more accurately measure the political power of organised labour. This point has implications for analysing a variety of policy outcomes in policy areas exposed to permanent austerity measures.

Paying the Price? An Investigation Into the Continued Decline of Part-time Higher Education in England

Part-time study represents a significant segment of the UK higher education sector accounting for almost half of all university enrolments at its peak in 2004, yet since then the different modes of study (full-time/part-time) have followed very different trajectories. A ‘perfect storm’ of economic conditions and government policy changes have combined to trigger a dramatic decline in part-time higher education enrolments even though full-time study enrolments continue to expand. The steep rise in tuition fees in 2012 is widely regarded as the sole catalyst behind the decline. However, this view almost certainly oversimplifies a complex array of economic pressures and policy changes that have coalesced to depress part-time recruitment. This article looks beyond the fee hike by synthesising the findings from a number of recent significant studies to separate the influence that recent governmental policy changes, supply-side factors and demand-side barriers have each exerted on part-time enrolments. The article continues by exploring some of the recent initiatives for enabling more accessible and flexible study that may help to slow the decline and also discusses abandoning the binary separation of the study modes as discrete entities as this may be particularly detrimental to the part-time mode.

The role of staff involved with undergraduate admissions and recruitment has changed since the turn towards marketisation in higher education. This article focuses on the system in England following both a sharp rise in student fees and an associated tendency for the public university agenda and related social priorities, such as widening participation, to come up against more private and commercial priorities, such as business engagement, league table performance and internationalisation. Drawing on evidence from detailed interviews with admissions personnel, both academic and non-academic, across three disciplines within one higher prestige university, we revisit the notion of selectivity and the practice of selection. Tensions are revealed between two opposing approaches: a more traditional model of university admissions, as based on local knowledge and sensitivity towards underrepresented groups, and a purportedly merit-driven model, as driven by perceived market position. We explore the intricate and often unexpected ways in which staff reconcile their professed beliefs with their professional practices, and the complex identity work needed to renegotiate personal values in light of shifting institutional needs. Findings are offered as a microcosm for broader trends in the higher education sector.

Comparison of the effect of social background on the wages of Spanish graduates before and during a crisis context

The economic context may have modified the relationship between higher education and the labour market. The rise in university fees, the labour market situation and the behaviour of employers, families and students could activate social background as a differentiating factor in post-higher education occupational status. The objective of the present study is to analyze if the social origin affects the labor insertion of the graduates, measured through their income. The labor insertion of graduates is analyzed in 2011 (crisis period) and compared with 2005 (period of economic expansion).Two Spanish databases are used in this analysis: the 2005 and 2011 Living Conditions Survey. The results presented show no income inequality related to social class of graduates. Between 2005 and 2011 most unskilled occupations suffered job destruction, thus homogenizing to some extent the graduates who were working in 2011 and reducing the internal differences.

Tuition fees and student effort at university

This paper presents theoretical and empirical evidence that an increase in tuition fees may boost university students’ academic effort. We examine the tuition fee rise introduced in 2012 by Spanish universities, where students register and pay for their chosen modules and fees increase each time students retake a module until they pass it. Data refer to students of economics, business and medicine at the University of Valencia during 2010–2014. The fact that some students pay fees in full while others are exempt from payment provides an identifying source of variation that we exploit using a flexible difference-in-differences methodology.

‘It’s just not worth a damn!’ Investigating perceptions of the value in attending university

ABSTRACTMass expansion of the UK Higher Education (HE) sector is eroding its well-documented benefits – leading many to question whether HE remains worthwhile. Avoiding the traditional approach of estimating the returns to HE, we investigate why many now feel that attending university will not yield any financial benefits. Using BSA data from 2010 we find that this negativity is being driven by perceived lack of graduate job prospects, the rise in tuition fees and wage underpayment. We conclude that this may well fuel uncertainty and reduce demand for HE from lower socio-economic groups while increasing intra class conflict in higher socio-economic groups.

La evolución del acceso a la universidad en Cataluña: ¿Cómo la explicamos?

This contribution to the debate about crisis effects is focused on the university access issue, in particular is centered on the Catalan university. Using data provided by the Oficina de Pre-inscripcio Universitaria (CIC-OPU) we analyze the evolution of the entrance to university over three periods of time: before the crisis, during the first part of the crisis (2008-2011), and throughout the second part (2011-2014), where there was a slight improvement of the young labor market and an important rise in university fees. In the first part we find a raise increment in university enrolment, thus giving support to the opportunity cost hypothesis. In the second period, we observe a decrease for some specific student profiles. Finally we give some examples of the strategies students build in order to enrol into univeristy, in order to interpret last period trends.

The Social Science Centre, Lincoln: the theory and practice of a radical idea

The Social Science Centre, Lincoln (SSC), is a co-operative organising free higher education in the city of Lincoln, England. It was formed in 2011 by a group of academics and students in response to the massive rise in student fees, from £3000 to £9000, along with other other government policies that saw the increasing neo-liberalisation of English universities. In this essay we chart the history of the SSC and what it has been like to be a member of this co-operative; but we also want to express another aspect of the centre which we have not written about: the existence of the SSC as an intellectual idea and how the idea has spread and been developed through written publications by members of the centre and by research on the centre by other non-members: students, academics and journalists. At the end of the essay we will show the most up to date manifestation of the idea, the plans to create a co-operative university with degree awarding powers where those involved, students and academics, can make a living as part of an independent enterprise ran and owned by its members for their benefit and the benefit of their community and society.

‘We will never escape these debts’: Undergraduate experiences of indebtedness, income-contingent loans and the tuition fee rises

This article critically examines how undergraduate students in a red brick university in the North of England have experienced the threefold rise in tuition fees since 2012, with particular attention on how they have begun to understand and negotiate the process of indebtedness. Drawing on a corpus of 118 interviews conducted with a group of 40 undergraduates across their whole student lifecycle, analysis is directed toward examining how students have variously sought to respond to the policy, reconcile the debt with their decision to study at university and, begin to negotiate a life of everyday indebtedness. The findings are located in the context of wider neoliberal policy trends that have continued to emphasise ‘cost-sharing’ as a mechanism for increased investment within the higher education sector generally, and individual fiscal responsibility specifically. Given the lack of any other viable career pathways for both lower and higher income students, they had to accept indebtedness as inevitable and take what comfort they could from the discourses of ‘foregone gain’ that they had been presented with. Evidently, and as the students in our sample well recognised, whether those discourses actually reflect the future remains to be seen. There is also no evidence within our data that students anticipated the subsequent changes to the repayment terms and conditions – a fact that is likely to compound feelings of economic powerlessness and constrain their capacity for financial agency yet further.

Short Sales Mechanism, Litigation Risk and Audit Fees

This paper examines how the short sales mechanism affects firms' audit fees through the changes in litigation risk, based on the natural experiment of securities margin trading in China. It comes to the conclusions that the introduction of short sales mechanism reinforces the pressure of the fall in stock prices and strengthens the incentive of investors to search bad news of companies, leading to the increase in audit litigation risk of companies and higher audit fees required by accounting firms. Further analysis suggests that the short sales mechanism plays a more obvious role in the increase in audit fees of state-owned enterprises, owing to poor information disclosure environment in state-owned enterprises; due to stronger compensation capacities of Big Four, the short sales mechanism significantly results in the rise in audit fees of Big Four; as for enterprises located in areas with poorer legal environment, because the management has the motivations to hide bad news, their audit fees significantly increase because of the existence of the short sales mechanism.
