The Use of Autogenous Rib Graft in Craniofacial Reconstruction: Case Series Study

Background: Hard tissue defects in the maxillofacial region due to trauma or ablative surgery result in functional and cosmetic problems. The method of choice in the treatment of facial defects is autogenous bone grafts. Objectives: To evaluate the use of rib grafts in the reconstruction of craniofacial deformities. Methods: This prospective study was presented for the reconstruction of craniofacial deformity using a rib bone graft. These cases were collected from the Maxillofacial Surgery Unit from October 2011 to November 2020. The sample consisted of 16 patients (14 males and 2 females, with a mean age of 34 years). The patients were divided according to the site of the defect. In all cases, a single rib was harvested. The fifth rib was taken. Bone graft fixation by bone plate, direct screws, and transosseous wiring. The success of the bone grafting was assessed by clinical and radiological examination. Results: The overall success rate in this study was 87.5%, while we had bone graft resorption in two cases (12.5%) of mandibular reconstruction. Only one case experienced donor site complications, a pleural tear, which successfully underwent suturing and chest tube insertion. Conclusions: Free autogenous rib was successfully used to reconstruct defects in the maxillofacial regions. It gives the best result when minimum loading is needed. Stabilization of the graft by rigid internal fixation and good adaptation to the recipient site helped to minimize complications.

Comparative evaluation of multi-fold rib and structural iliac bone grafts in single-segment thoracic and thoracolumbar spinal tuberculosis: clinical and radiological outcomes

ObjectiveTo compare clinical and radiological outcomes of multi-fold rib and structural iliac bone grafts, the primary autologous graft techniques in anterolateral-only surgery for single-segment thoracic and thoracolumbar spinal tuberculosis.MethodsThis retrospective study included 99 patients treated from January 2014 to March 2022, categorized into 64 with multi-fold rib grafts (group A) and 35 with structural iliac bone grafts (group B). Outcomes assessed included hospital stay, operation time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative drainage, complications, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain, the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), bone fusion time, and the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) impairment scale grade. Segmental kyphotic angle and intervertebral height were measured radiologically before surgery and follow-up.ResultsThe mean follow-up was 63.50 ± 26.05 months for group A and 64.97 ± 26.43 months for group B (P > 0.05). All patients had achieved a clinical cure. Group A had a shorter operation time (P = 0.004). Within one week post-surgery, group B reported higher VAS scores (P < 0.0001). Neurological performance and quality of life significantly improved in both groups. No significant differences were observed in segmental kyphotic angle and intervertebral height between the groups pre- and postoperatively (P > 0.05). However, group A showed a greater segmental kyphotic angle at the final follow-up, while group B had better maintenance of kyphotic angle correction and intervertebral height (P < 0.05). Bone fusion was achieved in all patients without differences in fusion time (P > 0.05).ConclusionsMulti-fold rib grafts resulted in shorter operation times and less postoperative pain, while structural iliac bone grafts provided better long-term maintenance of spinal alignment and stability, suggesting their use in cases where long-term outcomes are critical.

Multilayer Anterior Skull Base Reconstruction with Cortical Rib Bone Graft: Preliminary Experience

During the past decades, different methods have been described for anterior skull base reconstruction. Regarding larger skull base defects, few investigators have described the use of bone grafts to foster support and prevent frontal lobe sagging, herniation, or falling. The aim of this study is to describe the use of a rib bone graft, which could be an option in these cases due to its rigidity and dimensions. We retrospectively collected preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative data at the last follow-up of 10 patients who underwent multilayer anterior skull base reconstruction, including rib bone graft, for large anterior cranial base defects at 2 tertiary care academic hospitals. Eight patients underwent endoscopic craniectomy for sinonasal malignancies, and the other two underwent transnasal endoscopic surgery for congenital meningoencephalocele. Anterior skull base defects measured on average 3.8 cm ± 0.9 SD antero-posteriorly (range 2.5-5 cm) and 2.3 ± 0.9 SD latero-laterally (range 0.9-4 cm). Multilayer reconstruction was performed in all cases, including a rib bone graft positioned as intracranial extradural layer. No patient experienced thoracic complications during the postoperative period. No side effects related to the bone graft or meningoencephalocele occurrence were reported after a mean follow-up of 8.0 ± 6.3 months. The use of a cortical rib bone graft could be a safe and effective option in skull base reconstruction when managing large defects after cancer removal.

Supraorbital Rim and Roof Reconstruction with Vascularized Fascia Lata and Autogenous Rib Graft.

Describe a novel technique for reconstruction of complex defects involving supraorbital rim and orbital roof. Retrospective chart review and description of surgical technique. Four patients underwent tumor resection with neurosurgery (2 intraosseous hemangioma, 1 meningioma, and 1 ossifying fibroma), with mean tumor size of 42.6 cubic centimeters on preoperative imaging. All defects involved supraorbital rim and orbital roof. Patients were reconstructed with autogenous osseous rib graft for structure and contour and anterolateral thigh fascia lata (ALTFL) free flap to provide robust vascularity to rib bone and as a barrier between skull base dura and the orbit and/or sinonasal cavities. Two patients underwent resection and reconstruction using minimal access incisions, and two underwent major cranial and skull base resections. All flaps are vascularized via superficial temporal vessels. On postoperative follow-up (mean 33.5 months, range 8-48), all patients report no vision change or diplopia, with excellent contour symmetry to contralateral orbit. Follow-up imaging (mean 29.5 months, range 3-48) demonstrated maintained orbital volume and retention of rib bone graft compared to immediate postoperative imaging. There were no complications related to graft use. Minor complications include 1 patient with cerebrospinal fluid leak managed with lumbar drain placement and 1 patient with mild enophthalmos at 7-month follow-up. We describe a series of patients who underwent a novel technique for reconstruction of complex defects involving supraorbital rim and orbital roof with autogenous osseous rib and vascularized ALTFL-free flap with excellent functional and cosmetic outcomes. Delayed Reconstruction of Open Multiple Metatarsal Fractures Using Rib Bone Graft after Soft Tissue Coverage with Gracilis Free Flap: Case Report and Literature Commentary

Foot restoration after massive bone and soft tissue loss is a daunting task for surgeons. Existing literature has highlighted various methods of reconstruction. Masquelet technique, use of vascularised and non-vascularized fibular grafts, use of latissimus dorsi, serratus anterior in combination with rib grafts, iliac crest grafts have been described.

Vascularized Rib Bone Grafting: Indications, Techniques, and Clinical Outcomes.

Pseudarthrosis is a difficult complication often seen in patients with complex spinal pathology. To supplement existing neurosurgical approaches to cervicothoracic spinal instrumentation and fusion, novel vascularized rib bone grafts can be utilized in patients at high risk for failed spinal fusion. In this article, we discuss the indications, benefits, surgical technique, feasibility, and limitations of using rib vascularized rib bone grafts to augment spinal fusion.

Vascularized Rib Grafts to Augment Spinal Fusion: A Novel Approach

BACKGROUND: Pseudoarthrosis is a well-known complication following spinal fusion. Rates range from 5% to 40% and are influenced by both patient factors and technical factors. Patients with pseudoarthrosis may experience a return or worsening of their preoperative pain, which can significantly decrease quality of life. For patients with complex posterior column defects with either anterior or posterior columnar insufficiency, especially those receiving chemotherapy, radiation, predisposed to recurrent pseudarthrosis or infection, vascularized bone grafts (VBGs) have been shown to provide better outcomes than nonvascularized bone grafts (N-VBGs).1–5 The purpose of this study is to present an innovative pedicled rib VBG (R-VBG) that can be utilized to augment instrumented spinal fusion. METHODS: Following hardware placement for spinal fusion, an incision is made over the target rib. The intercostal muscle attachments to the superior border of the R-VBG are released, and the rib with its blood supply intact is bluntly dissected from the underlying pleura and inferior intercostal muscle attachments, protecting the subcostal vessels. Particular care is taken when separating the intercostal nerve from the subcostal vessels to prevent postoperative numbness and radicular pain. At the lateral limit of the dissection, the subcostal vessels were controlled, and the rib is cut distally and proximally. The R-VBG is then tunneled under the paraspinous muscles and placed along the posterolateral gutters of the spinal levels being augmented. The natural curvature of the rib is used to match the patients kyphosis/lordosis. The rib is cut down to size and fixated. RESULTS: To date, 7 R-VBGs have attempted. Of these 6 (86%) have been successfully harvested, all of which (100%) went on to achieve at least probable radiologic evidence of graft site fusion. CONCLUSION: The technique described for rotating a vascularized rib bone graft into the posterolateral space for spinal fusion as far as the L4/L5 joint space is an effective method for augmentation of spinal fusion in patients with complex spinal pathologies. Although additional data needs to be collected before true indications can be elucidated for this procedure, our preliminary prospective results suggest that this approach is relatively low risk, especially compared to free tissue transfer, and it has the benefit of providing well-vascularized, healthy bone to augment the fusion bed. Reconstruction of Complex Scalp Defects in Different Locations: Suggestions for Puzzle.

Objective:Scalp defects may occur following trauma, radiotherapy, oncologic resection, and recurrent surgeries. The hair-bearing scalp has a dual role, which consists of protecting the calvarium and contributing to aesthetic appearance. While the “reconstructive ladder” approach may be used to close small and medium-sized scalp defects, it is not the case for larger ones involving the calvarium or with a radiation therapy history. The aim of this study is to present cases operated due to complex scalp defects, analyze complications, and discuss the choice of reconstruction.Material and Methods:The study consists of 14 patients who were operated between December 2017 and August 2019 due to a complex scalp defect. Patient were evaluated according to age, gender, etiology, radiation therapy history, defect size and location, reconstruction steps, cranioplasty and duraplasty options, type of free flap, recipient artery, vein graft requirement, and complications.Results:The mean age of patients, which consists of 11 men and three women, was 56.7 years. The etiology for scalp defects included basosquamous carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, giant basal cell carcinoma, atypical meningioma, glioblastoma multiforme, angiosarcoma, and anaplastic oligodendroglioma. The defect involved the full thickness of calvarium in nine cases and pericranium in five cases. Cranioplasties were made with rib graft (n=1), bone graft (n=1), and titanium mesh (n=7). Free flaps used for reconstruction were musculocutaneous latissimus dorsi (LD) (n=4), LD muscle (n=3), anterolateral thigh (ALT) (n=4), musculocutaneous ALT (n=1), vastus lateralis muscle (1), and rectus abdominis muscle (n=1). Flap loss was not observed. Complications occurred in four of the patients; include a partial graft loss, a wound dehiscence, seroma, and an unsatisfactory esthetic result.Conclusion:Free tissue transfers rather than local flaps should be opted to reconstruct complex scalp defects, as failure of the latter, could create much greater defects, and worse consequences. There are many options for proper reconstruction, and it is essential to select the appropriate one, taking into account the comorbid conditions of each case.

Aspergillus terreus spondylodiscitis following an abdominal stab wound: a case report

BackgroundAspergillus terreus, a saprophytic fungus, is recognized as an emerging pathogen in various infections in humans. However, bone and joint involvement is uncommon. To the best of our knowledge, only seven cases of spondylodiscitis caused by Aspergillus terreus have been reported previously in humans. We report a case of a patient with Aspergillus terreus spondylodiscitis following an abdominal stab wound.Case presentationA 74-year-old Japanese man with no particular medical history fell from a ladder and sustained a left abdominal stab wound from an L-shaped metal peg. Computed tomography showed the trace of the L-shaped metal peg from the left abdomen to the left rib and left kidney. The scan also showed an anterolateral bone avulsion of the left side of the T12 vertebral body, as well as fractures of the L1 left transverse process and the left 10th–12th ribs. He was hospitalized and treated with conservative therapy for 6 weeks. He was readmitted to the hospital with complaints of sudden back pain, numbness of both legs, and inability to walk 13 weeks after the fall. Magnetic resonance imaging findings were typical of spondylodiscitis. Gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging indicated increased signal intensity at T11–T12 vertebral bodies and severe cord compression and epidural abscess at T11–T12 associated with infiltration of soft paravertebral tissues. On the seventh day after admission, he underwent partial laminectomy at T11 and posterior fusion at T9 to L2. The result of his blood culture was negative, but Aspergillus terreus was isolated from the material of T11–T12 intervertebral disc and vertebral bodies. His Aspergillus antigen was positive in a blood examination. Histological examination showed chronic suppurative osteomyelitis. On the 35th day after admission, he underwent anterior fusion at T11 and T12 with a rib bone graft. For 5 months, voriconazole was administered, and he wore a rigid corset. Posterior partial laminectomy at T11 and anterior fusion at T11 and T12 resulted in a good clinical course. The patient’s neurological dysfunction was completely recovered, and his back pain disappeared. Two years after the operation, computed tomography was performed and showed bone fusion at T11 and T12. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed no evidence of increased signal intensity at T11–T12 vertebral bodies and severe cord compression and epidural abscess at T11–T12.ConclusionsTo our knowledge, this is the first report of spondylodiscitis caused by Aspergillus terreus after an abdominal penetrating injury. The histological finding of chronic suppurative osteomyelitis and the radiological findings strongly suggested direct inoculation of Aspergillus terreus.

Autogenic Rib Graft for Atlantoaxial and Occipitocervical Fixation in Pediatric Patients.

Study DesignRetrospective case series.PurposeTo evaluate surgical outcomes and effectiveness of an autogenic rib graft for upper cervical fixation in pediatric patients.Overview of LiteratureAutogenic bone grafts have long been considered the ‘gold standard’ bone source for posterior cervical fusion in pediatric patients. However, there are some unsolved problems associated with donor-site morbidity and amount of bone grafting.MethodsWe studied five consecutive pediatric patients who underwent atlantoaxial fixation or occipitocervical fixation (OCF) using an autogenic rib graft with at least 2 years of follow-up (mean age, 9.8 years; mean follow-up period, 73.0 months). Two patients underwent OCF without screw-rod constructs and three patients with screw-rod constructs. Autogenic rib grafts were used in all patients. We evaluated the surgical outcomes including radiographic parameter, bony union, and perioperative complications.ResultsThe atlantoaxial interval (ADI) was corrected from 11.6 to 6.0 mm, and the C1–2 angle was corrected −14.8° to 7.8°. The C2–7 angle was reduced from 31° to 9° spontaneously. Two patients with OCF required revision surgery due to loss of correction. Patients did not experience any complication associated with the donor sites (rib bone grafts). Six months postoperation X-rays clearly showed regeneration of the rib at the donor sites. Bony fusion was achieved in all patients; however, bony fusion occurred more slowly in patients without screw-rod constructs compared with patients with screw-rod constructs. Bone regeneration of the rib was observed in all patients with no complications at the donor site.ConclusionsAutogenic rib grafts have advantages of potential bone regeneration, high fusion rate, and low donor-site morbidity. In addition, a screw-rod construct provides better bony fusion in pediatric patients with OCF and atlantoaxial fixation.

PEDIATRIC CRANIOFACIAL DISFIGUREMENT WITH AUTOLOGOUS RIBS BONE GRAFT RECONSTRUCTION

Pediatric reconstruction of the cranial defect is a challenging task, the standard reconstruction method has been bone grafting. The reconstruction of complex facial defects should satisfy both aesthetic and functional requirements. In the case of large defects, the use of craniofacial prostheses using autogenous bone is the material of choice because of its potential for revascularization and its osteoconductive properties. A 3-year-old patient has facial disfgurement as result from bone defciency following anterior skull base tumour resection. To minimize the associated functional and cosmetic problems, a number of reconstructive options are available to the surgeon including the use of autogenous and alloplastic implants. A computed tomography (CT) 3-dimensional reconstruction scan showed a large craniofacial defect as residual radical skull base tumour resection. A transcranial approach by a neurosurgeon and plastic surgery was performed to reconstruct the defect using autologous rib bone graft. Six months after the reconstruction surgery, a defect of the craniofacial was narrowing without cranial nerve defcits.Complex reconstructions of extensive defects in craniofacial area can be achieved using autologous bone grafts. They yield reasonable functional and aesthetic outcomes and noticeably improves the qualityof life.

Intraosseous hemangioma is an extremely rare tumor that accounts for 1% or fewer of all osseous tumors. The most common sites of its occurrence are the vertebral column and calvaria. Occurrence in a facial bone is very rare. The authors aim to report a case of the surgical treatment of intraosseous hemangioma occurring in the periorbital region, which is a very rare site of occurrence and to introduce our own experiences with the diagnosis and treatment of this condition along with a literature review. A 73-year-old male patient visited our hospital with the chief complaint of a mass touching the left orbital rim. A biopsy was performed by applying a direct incision after local anesthesia. Eventually, intraosseous hemangioma was diagnosed histologically. To fully resect the mass, the orbital floor and zygoma were exposed through a subciliary incision under general anesthesia, and then the tumor was completely eliminated. Bony defect was reconstructed by performing a seventh rib bone graft. Follow-up observation has so far been conducted for 10 months after surgery without recurrence or symptoms.

EFFICACY OF TWO DIFFERENT RECONSTRUCTION MODALITIES AFTER SURGICAL RESECTION OF MANDIBULAR FIBROUS DYSPLASIA (A CLINICAL STUDY)

Objective: To evaluate efficacy of Nonvascularized bone graft ( NVBG) with bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) compared with free vascularized fibula graft in reconstruction of mandible after surgical treatment of monostatic mandibular fibrous Dysplasia. Patients and methods: The present study was carried out of three years on 14 patients (8 males & 6 female) ranging from 9- 18 years who had monostatic fibrous dysplasia and need segmental resection and immediate reconstruction. The patients were divided randomly into two equal groups; group I patients grafted with free vascularized fibula graft after segmental resection and group II patients grafted with iliac crest or rib bone graft and injected with BMAC at surgical site after radical excision of lesion. They were selected from those attending the out patient clinic at Faculty of Dental Medicine, Al Azhar University, Assuit branch and the Faculty of Dentistry, in coordination with Plastic Surgery at Suez Canal University Hospital over a period of 4 years (July 2013 –July 2017). Postoperative clinical, radiographic evaluation were performed at 6 month and 12 month till two years after that to assess recurrence of lesion and bone graft density.Results: Both groups was clinically uneventful except two cases in group I and one case in group II .All patients had adequate facial contour, proper facial symmetry and good take post operatively. Radiographic evaluation showed at six month, there was a highly statistically significant difference between two groups. This means that, newly formed bone of group I was significantly denser than group II. At 12 months, the mean of the group I was more than the mean of group II . These showed a difference between means of two groups but this difference was not a statistically significant . Conclusion: Conventional grafting techniques with NVBGs improved by BMAC injection with satisfactory outcomes . Thereby it can be used as alternative modality for free vascularized bone graft in mandibular reconstruction in cases with massive monostatic fibrous dysplasia depend on the size of the lesion

One-Stage Treatment for Adult Patients With Crouzonoid Appearance by Orthognathic and Face Contouring Surgery.

Crouzon syndrome is a rare genetic disorder with autosomal-dominant inheritance that shows a triad of hallmark characteristics: craniosynostosis, exophthalmos, and midface retrusion. General treatment protocol for patients with Crouzon syndrome has already been established, but there is no standard treatment strategy for adult patients with Crouzonoid appearance. The authors present clinical patients of 1-stage orthognathic and face contouring surgery to achieve functional and aesthetic improvement.One-stage surgery was performed in adult patients with Crouzonoid appearance without a history of facial surgery. Orthognathic 2-jaw surgery was first performed to treat class III malocclusion. Face contouring surgery was conducted next to improve the aesthetic appearance using midface augmentation with onlay rib bone graft, advancement genioplasty, augmentation rhinoplasty, and ancillary procedures such as neck lift, fat graft, or fillers.Five patients (2 men, 3 women) were enrolled in this study. The mean age at the time of surgery was 19.0 years. No specific surgery-related complications such as infection, nerve injury, or recurred malocclusion were observed during the 3.5 years of follow-up. Normal class I occlusion was reached in all patients. The frontonasal angle, nasolabial angle, and labiomental angle improved from 125.1° to 135.1° (P > 0.05), 60.9° to 86.3° (P = 0.018), and 146.3° to 125.0° (P = 0.018), respectively. The Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale score was 4.75 and 5.00 in frontal and profile views, respectively.One-stage orthognathic and face contouring surgery may be an effective surgical option with good postoperative functional and aesthetic improvement in adult patients with Crouzonoid appearance.

In Situ Splitting of a Rib Bone Graft for Reconstruction of Orbital Floor and Medial Wall

In situ splitting of rib bone graft was conducted in 22 patients for the repair of orbital fracture with no other complicating fractures. A bone graft was harvested from the sixth or seventh rib in the right side. The repair of the orbital floor and medial wall was successful in all the cases. Ten patients had bone grafting to the orbital floor, eight had it done onto medial wall, and 4 onto both floor and wall after reduction. The mean length of in situ rib bone graft was 40.9 mm (range, 20-70 mm), the mean width of these was 14.9 mm (range, 8-20 mm). The bone grafting was done by one leaf for 15 cases and two leafs for 7 cases in size of defects. The technique of in situ splitting of a rib bone graft for the repair of the orbital floor and medial wall is a simple and safe procedure, easily taking out the in situ splitting of a rib, and less pain in donor site. It has proved to be an optimal choice in craniofacial reconstruction, especially the defects of orbital floor and medial wall.

Use of mandibular chin bone for alveolar bone grafting in cleft patients.

BackgroundWe evaluated and compared the outcomes of different ossification processes in patients with alveolar cleft in whom correction was performed using endochondral bone graft or intramembranous bone graft.MethodsThe patients were divided into two groups: the endochondral bone (iliac bone or rib bone) graft group and the intramembranous bone (mandibular bone) graft group. Medical records and radiologic images of patients who underwent alveolar bone grafting due to alveolar cleft were analyzed retrospectively. Through postoperative and follow-up radiologic images, the height of the interdental bone septum was classified into four types based on the highest point of alveolar ridge. Then, the height of the interdental bone septum and the area of the bone graft were evaluated according to the type of bone graft. In addition, the occurrence of complications and the need for an additional bone graft, the result of postoperative orthodontic treatment, and the eruption of impacted teeth were investigated.ResultsThirty patients were included in this study. There was no significant difference in the change of the interdental bone height and the area of the bone graft according to the type of bone. There was no significant difference in the success rate of the surgery according to the type of bone. One patient underwent an additional bone graft surgery during the follow-up period.ConclusionsThe outcomes of alveolar bone grafting were not significantly different according to the type of bone graft. If appropriate to the size of the recipient site, the chin bone is a useful graft material in alveolar cleft, as is the iliac bone.

Reconstruction With Rib Graft for Acetabular Revision in Pelvic Discontinuity

Acetabular osteolysis associated with socket loosening is one of the main long-term complications of total hip arthroplasty. In case of major bone loss, even metal ring or cage in association showed poor long-term outcome. To promote allograft bone consolidation and acetabular stability, we have associated a rib graft and column fixation to reconstruct the acetabular surface. Here, we describe 8 cases and the technical details of major acetabular reconstruction using revision cup with autologous rib graft. The main advantages of this procedure are the aid in allograft integration and partial unload of the allograft. Our preliminary results using rib bone graft indicate a good allograft consolidation and remodeling. The small number of patients does not allow conclusions about the efficacy of this technique but it offers another solution for extreme severe bone loss.

Onlay Rib Bone Graft in Elevation of Reconstructed Auricle: 17 Years of Experience

BackgroundA cartilage wedge block and covering flap are standard procedures for firm elevation of the ear in microtia correction. However, using costal cartilage for elevation of the reconstructed auricle can be insufficient, and the fixed cartilage wedge block may be absorbed or may slip out. Furthermore, elevating covering flaps is time-consuming and uses up fascia, a potential source of reconstruction material. Therefore, we propose an innovative method using autologous onlay rib bone graft for auricular elevation of microtia.MethodsFrom February 1995 to August 2012, 77 patients received a first stage operation with a rib cartilage framework graft. In the second stage operation, a small full thickness of rib bone was harvested through the previous donor scar. The bihalved rib bone was inserted into the subperiosteal pocket beneath the cartilage framework.ResultsThe follow-up time ranged from 1 month to 17 years, with a mean of 3 years. All of the patients sustained the elevation of their ears very well during the follow-up period. Donor site problems, except for hypertrophic scars, were not observed. Surgery-related complications, specifically skin necrosis, infection, or hematoma, occurred in 4 cases.ConclusionsOnlay rib bone graft used to elevate the reconstructed auricle is a more anatomically appropriate material than cartilage, due to the bone-to-bone contact between the bone graft and the temporal bone. Postoperative minor correction of the elevation degree is straightforward and the skin graft survives better. Therefore, reconstructed auricle elevation using onlay rib bone graft is a useful and valuable method.
