Vorkommen des Auerhuhns (Tetrao urogallus major C. L. Brehm, 1831) am Athos (Greichenland)

At the Mount Athos the Capercaillie is spread in the montane high forests at an altitude between 1140 m and 1340 m above sea level. This isolated occurrence at the southern boundary of the species area and 140 km to the south of the breeding place in the Rhodope Mountains is the southernmost occurrence recorded so far. In former times, the Capercaillie presumably was widespread in the mountain forests of Central and Northern Greece.

X-Ray radial distribution function analysis of acid volcanic glasses from the Eastern Rhodopes, Bulgaria

Five natural acid volcanic glasses (perlites) from the Eastern Rhodope mountains, Bulgaria, have been studied by X-ray diffraction. The quantity of the microlites varies from 1–3.5 weight percent. It is higher in the glasses from the rhyolite-perlite transition zone. Total pair correlation functions have been calculated for three of the glasses with less than 2 weight percent microlites. All total pair correlation functions are quite similar and have six well defined peaks up to 8 A. Beyond 8 A they are practically featureless. The general form of the curves and peak positions suggests that the short-range order in all the three glasses is compatible with a 6-membered tetrahedral ring polymerization scheme with some contribution of fourmembered rings. The T-01 (T=Si, Al) distance shows linear correlation with the weight percent ratio Al2O3/SiO2. The averaged first nearest neighbour distances T-01, O-01 and T-T1 are 1.615±0.005 A, 2.66±0.02 A and 3.16±0.02 A, respectively. The mean T-O-T bond angle is 157±4°. Energy minimization and topology considerations of the possible distribution of different tetrahedral rings are discussed.

Land classification of part of Thrace (East Rhodope) by visual interpretation of MSS images of first and second generation landsat images

The aim of this investigation was the classification of East Rhodope mountain ridge area and the surrounding hills and plains into mapping units by visual interpretation of 1:500,000 paper print enlargements of MSS false colour composites (bands 1, 2 and 4) of LANDSAT-4 and MSS (band 7) of LANDSAT-1, supported by limited field observation and background information available from earlier surveys and maps. The basic mapping units used in the present study was the land systems (developed by CSIRO in Australia) because they are easily recognizable on LANDSAT images by their destinctive combination of physiography, soils and vegetation.

Mangiferin in some species of the genusHypericum

The biological activity of mangiferin makes the search for sources of natural raw material for its isolation urgent [3], and the distribution of the xanthones in higher plants is of interest for the purposes of chemosystematics [6]. All this could not but draw our attention to this group of compounds, since a large number of xanthones has been detected in representatives of the family Guttiferae. In the most numerous genus Hype~c~ L., maculatoxanthone has been found, having been isolated from H. maculatum Cranz [7], and the presence of mangiferin in H. h~fus~ L. has been established chromatographically [8]. When 12 species of the genus Hype~c~ growing in the territory of the People's Republic of Bulgaria were investigated, mangiferin was detected in four species, being present in largest amount in the herb H. auche~i Jaub. et Spach. • Mangiferin was isolated from the epigeal part of H. auohe~i collected in the flowering period of the Eastern Rhodopes mountains. The raw material was treated with chloroform to eliminate ballast substances, and the combined phenolic substances were extracted with 95%, and then with 70%, ethanol. The ethanolic extracts were concentrated and were additionally purified with chloroform. The purified extract was repeatedly treated with ethyl acetate. The solvent was distilled off, and the residue was dissolved in 80% ethanol. The precipitate that deposited after cooling was recrystallized from 80% ethanol. Beiträge zur Kenntnis der cavernicolen Antroleucosomiden (Diplopoda, Ascospermophora)

The family of the Antroleucosomidae is known from the Mediterranean region. In this paper the author describes the new genus Dacosoma with the species D. motasi of caves of the southern Carpathians together with two new species of Bulgarosoma, B. Ocellatum n. sp. of the caves of Mount Banat and B. meridionalis of the cave on Rhodope mountains. A new and complete description is also given for Antroleucosoma banaticum Verh. 1899 and B. bureschi Verh. 1926 based on the study of material coming from the type localities.

The 'Logic' of the Seventeenth Parallel as a Boundary in Indochina

On July 21, 1954, the newly created Communist state of North Vietnam was separated from free South Vietnam by a line running close to the 17th parallel north, from the seacoast westward to the crest of the mountains* Thus the 17th parallel joined the 38th parallel in the minds of the public as a geodetic bound ary between the Communist world and the free, and the mountain chain be tween Laos and Tonking joined the Oder-Neisse, the Danube and the Rhodope mountains in serving as more natural boundaries between the great ideologies of our time.

The Upper Thracian Plain in Bulgarian Agriculture

fT 11 ^HE broad valley of the Maritsa River forms the large lowland plain of Upper Thracia which extends east-west between the Rhodope Mountains and Sredna Gora and slopes gradually and almost imperceptibly from elevations of 100 to 200 meters eastward and east-southeastward. The Upper Thracian plain, a structural feature formed in the beginning of the Pliocene, is delimited on the north by a fold and on the south by a series of faults. The hills of Plovdiv (Phillipopolis) are erosion remnants of a peneplain which has sunk, and after the sinking has been overlayed with sediments, thus assuming the character of a real plain. The process continues even at present, as is indicated by the earthquakes of 1928, and the absence of old diluvial terraces. As a result, the landscape reveals every aspect of a typical lowland plain-such an area as provides fundamental conditions requisite for easy irrigation. The plain of Upper Thracia has excellent soil for varied crop production. Loose and mellow alluvium characterizes the river flats, but elsewhere black earth, or chernozem, has developed over the area, which approximates 7,500 kilometers in extent, almost 7'2 per cent of the whole area of Bulgaria. The proportion of cultivated land is substantially higher than in other parts of the country. The climate of the region is distinguished by a favorable positive anomaly of temperature with the result that frost in springtime or autumn rarely damages growth. The growing season is defined in accordance with Table I. The precipitation is not adequate for normal agriculture. The valley lies within a horseshoe-shaped depression encircled by elevations high enough to condense most of the moisture, leaving the valley within the rain shadow. The precipitation for the whole of Bulgaria is 65 centimeters annually, whereas in the Upper Thracian plain it averages only 50 to 55 centimeters. The Yuruks

Besides the Osmanli Turks dispersed in North and South Bulgaria and the Pomaks or Bulgar Mohammedans of the Ehodope Mountains, there are the less known Yuruks, an interesting shepherd race. Traces of them are found in the Rhodope Mountains, where for centuries they were neighbours of the Karakachans or Aromunian nomad shepherds. The place-names Village-of-Yuruks and Tomb-of-Yuruks occur frequently here.
