A retrospective study on ABO Blood Groups and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases.

Objective: To investigate the potential association between ABO blood groups and the incidence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in a population from Hyderabad, Pakistan.Methodology: This was a retrospective comparative type of study conducted in the pulmonology OPD (Out Patient Department) of the Liaquat University Hospital Hyderabad from June 2023 to September 2023. Five hundred and thirty (n =530) patients who visited pulmonology OPD were selected. Three hundred male and 230 female patients who visited the Pulmonology OPD for different respiratory illnesses were included in this study. COPD was diagnosed by the historyof illness and x-ray chest posterior-anterior (P/A) view. Blood groups were determined by the blood agglutination method.Results: The results show that most COPD male patients (13.20%) contain the O group, 8.45% have the A group, 5.66% have the B group, and 0.56% have the AB group. The P value was > 0.05, which was relatively higher in the O group patient when Fischer’s exact test was applied.Conclusion: The study concludes that there was a potential association between ABO blood group O and an increased risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), warranting further research to confirm these findings. Distribution of ABO and Rhesus ‘D’ Blood Groups among Pregnant Women in a Tertiary Hospital in Rivers State, Southern Nigeria

Background: In recent times, the role of ABO and Rhesus grouping in clinical practice has increased widely. There is a paucity of literature on blood group distribution, and its distribution has not been studied in our centre. This study aimed to determine the distribution of ABO, Rh D blood groups and haemoglobin genotype among pregnant women initiating antenatal care in Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH). Methods: This was a cross-sectional study among antenatal clinic attendees in RSUTH, over 6 months. At booking 3ml of venous blood was collected in Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) vacutainer from the pregnant women, and ABO and Rh D typing was done by tile methods forward and reverse grouping methods and confirmed by microscopy. Haemoglobin genotype was done by electrophoresis. Data collected were analyzed using IBM Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS), version 25.0 (Armonk, New York). Results: One thousand one hundred and forty -seven patients were recruited for the study. Their mean age and mean gestational age at booking were 31.6 SD 4.6 years (95% CI: 31.3,31.8), and 21.1 SD 18.6 weeks respectively. Modal parity was para 1. The predominant blood group among pregnant women at the RSUTH was O [667 (58.2%)], followed by A [286 (24.9%)], B [171(14.9%)], and AB [23(2%)]. The prevalences of Rhesus D positive and Rhesus D negative blood group were 95.2% and 4.8% respectively. Concerning genotype, the most predominant was AA 898 (78%) followed by AS [245 (21.4)], SS [4 (0.4%)], and AC [2 (0.2%]. Conclusion: The predominant blood group and genotype among pregnant women in our centre is O Rh D positive and AA respectively. The findings from this study would help plan transfusion services antepartum and post-partum. This will be relevant in transfusion and coagulation management of obstetric haemorrhage.

Exploring trends, challenges and issues of blood donation in Yaounde-Cameroon

Background: Access to a safe and adequate blood supply has proven to be challenging in sub-Saharan Africa, where systemic deficiencies have greatly been recorded. Blood availability is a public health issue of concern in Sub-Saharan Africa where both the demand and discard rates of blood are high and this includes Cameroon. Objective: This research study was carried out in order to capture the trends of blood donation, and to address the epidemiological aspects of blood donation in Yaounde. Study design and methods: The research was quantitative and relied on a cross-sectional study. With record base supplied by the National Blood Transfusion Center, as well as data from a random-sample survey of 300 blood donors at the Yaounde Central Hospitals’ blood bank. Statistical methods were applied to estimate national blood activities from January 2018 to September 2019, and the data subsequently analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Results: The results revealed a low frequency of blood donation, and portrayed that 81.3% of donors were first time donors. The majority of donors in our study were family/replacement (98.5%) while the minority voluntary (1.6%). More so, among the different aspects studied, five factors were found to be effectively associated to blood donation frequency namely: presence of tattoos/scarifications/piercings, the motivation underlying the blood donation, the blood group, the rhesus group and the occurrence of an accident during previous blood donations. Conclusion: Results could be useful to provide updates for the government and international organizations’ programs involved in the improvement of blood donor recruitment strategies in Cameroon. The outcome is to permit the elaboration of more effective strategies for recruiting and retaining voluntary regular blood donors and help move away from the use of replacement donors as the main source of blood, hence providing the population with safe blood and consequently reduce mortality rates linked to the availability and quality of blood.

A combined continuous-time Markov chain and queueing-inventory model for a blood transfusion network considering ABO/Rh substitution priority and unreliable screening laboratory

The uncertain nature of blood supply and demand in a blood supply chain network (BSCN) makes it impossible completely meet the blood demands on time. That’s why there is a vital need to develop a comprehensive model for optimally managing blood networks considering all challenges they face with. Although many researches have studied blood inventory management (BIM) in BSCNs, there is still a lack of models simultaneously considering blood inventory levels in hospital blood banks (HBBs) and blood centers (BCs) as a stochastic process. Also, most models have not evaluated the impact of false positive (FP) and false negative (FN) errors in the screening laboratories (SLs) of BCs. Moreover, no study has modeled the HBB demands as a queueing-inventory model with multiple blood types according to ABO/Rh substitution priority. To fill these gaps, this paper develops a two-echelon blood bank network considering ABO/Rh factors and substitution priority in which inventory levels of all red blood cell (RBC) types in an HBB and BC are simultaneously modeled as eight dependent continuous-time Markov chains (CTMCs). An unobservable M/M/m queueing-inventory system with infected RBCs and (r,Q) policy in the HBB is proposed. The blood requests arrive at the requests queueing system in the HBB, and after processing and departing from the queue, they leave the HBB with exactly-one RBC unit with the same ABO and Rh (Rhesus) groups or compatible with other types of RBC. Lost sales occur if all possible types of RBC for transfusion are unavailable. HBB continuously checks each RBC type's inventory level and places an order to the BC once the inventory level of each one of them reaches a predetermined reorder point. Due to transfusion-transmissible infections (TTIs), an SL conducts a 100 % quality-assured screening in the BC modeled as an M/M/m queueing system. Due to unreliable inspectors, FP and FN errors are considered in the SL. The stationary distribution of the number of requests at the HBB, the number of RBCs in the SL, and joint stationary distributions of inventory level of all RBC types in the HBB and BC are derived. Afterward, each RBC type's waiting-time distribution in the HBB is obtained. Some performance measures and the long-run total cost are extended, and a mixed integer nonlinear programming model (MINLP) is presented. Then, we propose the grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA) to solve the complicated model. Also, this model is implemented in a case study in Tehran. Results show RBCs types O+ and A+ have the most lost sales, and the management should absorb more donors with these blood groups. Afterward, an approximation method to deal with multiple HBBs is suggested. Finally, several remarkable managerial and practical implications are presented.

The frequency and prognostic significance of ABO/Rh blood groups in male breast cancer patients: A multicenter study.

The study evaluated the distributions and prognostic significance of ABO and rhesus (D) groups in male breast cancer (MBC) patients. The data of 137 patients were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical, histopathological data and ABO/Rh blood groups of the patients were recorded. The ABO/Rh blood group distributions were compared to the healthy men control group (n = 120,160) by the chi-square test. Overall distributions of ABO blood groups were different between the patients (17.5% AB, 38% A, 19% B, and 25.5% O) and control group (7.88% AB, 42.06% A, 15.22% B, and 34.84% O) (P < .001). There were significant differences between the patients and control group with respect to AB vs non-AB blood group distributions (P < .001, odds ratio: 2.43, 95% CI) and O vs non-O blood group distributions (P = .016, odds ratio: 0.62, 95% CI). However, A vs non-A and B vs non-B blood group distributions were not significantly different. The distribution of the Rh factor was similar between patients and the control group (P = .93). In univariate analysis, ABO/Rh blood groups were not a prognostic factor on OS (P = .29). The frequency of the AB blood group in MBC patients is increased than in the healthy control group. AB blood group may be a risk factor for MBC, whereas O blood group may be a protective factor.

Diagnosis and Management of Pylorian Hypertrophy in Infants at Fousseyni Daou Hospital in Kayes, Mali

Summary: Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis is an obstruction of the lumen of the pylorus by muscular hypertrophy of the pyloric sphincter fg [1]. It is a rare disease in Africa: a recent publication in Tanzania reported 102 cases in 5 years [10]. Currently the diagnosis is based on abdominal ultrasound and the treatment is surgical. It affects 2 or 3 children out of 1000 and is more common in boys with a ratio of [4]. It occurs between 3 and 6 weeks of life and rarely after 12 weeks. Materials and methods: We conducted a retrospective study from January 2018 to December 2021 using patient records in the pediatric surgery department of the Fousseyni Daou hospital in Kayes. Results: During the study period we had performed 3260 consultations and we had performed 975 surgical interventions in patients hospitalized in the pediatric surgery department. 8 cases of hypertrophy of the pylorus were operated on, i.e. 0.82% of the operations, including 6 boys and 2 girls. The weight of the patients was between 2kg800 and 3kg500. The age of our patients varied between 05 days and 37 days of life 3 patients had been referred to us by the malnutrition unit of our pediatrics department. The hemoglobin level and the rhesus group had been carried out in all the patients and a moderate anemia had been detected in 3 patients. The ionogram had been performed in only 3 of the patients. Ultrasound confirmed the diagnosis of pyloric hypertrophy in all patients. A pyloromyotomy was performed in all patients with uncomplicated consequences. Conclusion: Pyloric hypertrophy is a rare pathology in our region (Kayes), the diagnosis is ultrasound and the treatment remains surgical.

The Prevalence of ABO, Rh and Bombay Blood Group among Donors at a Tertiary Care Hospital in Mangalore, India

Introduction: Blood types were first discovered by an Austrian physician, Karl Landsteiner. He found that blood sera from different persons would clump together (agglutinate) when mixed in test tubes, and some human blood also agglutinated with animal blood. The study of different blood groups is important as it has major role in blood transfusion, certain medico-legal cases especially disputed paternity etc. Aim: This study was carried out to find the prevalence of ABO, Rhesus (Rh) and Bombay blood group among donors at a tertiary care hospital. Materials and Methods: The present retrospective study was done at a tertiary care hospital of Mangalore, Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka, India from June 2018 to May 2019 with data analysis done in November 2019. Data of 8,254 blood donors were collected and analysed regarding ABO, Rhesus and Bombay group from June 2018 to May 2019. Blood grouping was done by automated method using agglutination technique. The data collected was analysed by frequency and percentage. Results: The total donors studied were 8,254 with mean age of 48 years. The most common blood group was O (n=3178,38.5%) followed by B (n=2343, 28.38), A (n=2102, 25.47%), AB (n=629, 7.62%) and Bombay (n=2, 0.02%), respectively. Rh positivity among donors were 94% (n=7762). Rest were Rh negative and were found to be approx. 6% (n=490). Conclusion: The most common blood group among donors was O Rh positive and the least common was Bombay blood group. Every blood bank should have a record of frequency of ABO and Rh grouping as it is important for its effective management. Distribution and frequency of principal Rh blood group antigens (D, C, c, E, and e) and their phenotypes in the blood donors attending blood bank in a tertiary care hospital in Barpeta district of Assam.

The ABO and Rhesus grouping system antigens have been found to have the highest immunogenicity and propensity to produce alloantibodies that cause most of the transfusion reactions. The Rhesus antigens that produce most of the immunogenic transfusion reactions are D, C, c, E, and e. Knowledge of the distribution of these Rh antigens in a population helps to render compatible blood in alloimmunized patients. The aim was to study the distribution and frequency of principal Rh blood group antigens (D, C, c, E, and e) and their phenotypes in the blood donors attending blood bank in a tertiary care hospital in Barpeta district of Assam. The study was conducted in 315 voluntary blood donors in the blood bank of a tertiary care center. Rh-D typing was done by conventional tube method. Specific monoclonal antisera, i.e., anti-C, anti-c, anti-E, and anti-e, were used and tests were performed by conventional tube method for detection of the presence of rest of the major Rh antigens. The samples were analyzed for the five major Rhesus antigens. "D" antigen was found to be the most common antigen (99.05%), followed by e (97.14%), C (92.38%), c (51.43%), and E (20.95%). In order of descending frequency, the most common phenotypes were DCCee - 45.71%, DCcee - 30.48%, DCcEe - 11.43%, DccEe - 4.76%, DCcEE - 1.90%, DCCEe - 1.90%, Dccee - 1.90%, DCCEE - 0.95%, and dccee - 0.95%. D antigen is the most common antigen in our study population, whereas "e" antigen is the most common in most of the studies done from other parts of India. Data on frequencies of major Rh antigens in the local donor population will help in transfusing alloimmunized patients with corresponding antibody-negative blood ensuring blood safety.

Distribution of ABO, Rhesus Factor Blood Phenotype and Haemoglobin Genotype among Antenatal Clinic Attendees in Anyigba, North Central Nigeria

Background: In the practice of obstetrics and gynecology, the ABO and Rhesus factor (Rh) blood type are important. Blood typing for blood transfusion of compatible blood is very common in emergency and routine care. There is a scanty literature on the distribution of ABO and Rhesus blood types in Anyigba, (North central) Nigeria. Objective: This study aims to determine the distribution of ABO blood and Rhesus blood group phenotypes and Hemoglobin genotypes among antenatal clinic attendees in a teaching hospital. Methods: Antenatal records of attendees (October 2017 to September 2020) at the Kogi State University Teaching Hospital were retrieved and results of antenatal hematological investigations were collected using a structured tool.Bio data, ABO blood group, Rhesus group phenotype and Hemoglobin genotype were collected, inputted and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Results: The mean age was 26 +/- 7years, blood group O is most prevalent,561 (53.6%) then A 276 (26.4%), B 189 (18.1%) and AB,21 (2%).1014 (96.4%) were Rhesus D positive, 33 (3.1%) were Rhesus D negative. For hemoglobin genotype, 786 (75.1%) were AA, 258 (24.6%) were AS, AC were 3 (0.3%). Conclusion: The distribution of the ABO, the Rhesus (D) blood groups and hemoglobin genotypes are in concurrence with the findings of previous studies; Blood group O is the most prevalent and AB the least prevalent, Rhesus (D) positive in the population is high and the hemoglobin genotype AA is the most prevalent. There is no association between blood group phenotypes studied and the hemoglobin genotypes.

Contribution of adult sex ratio to trauma and reproductive output in large breeding groups of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta).

Maintaining stable breeding groups of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) can be challenging due to the complex social dynamics and despotic nature of the species. Trauma from aggression is a common problem in rhesus colonies and can cause social disruption, strain veterinary and animal management resources, and potentially affect reproduction. Previous research has shown that increasing the number of non-natal adult males in a breeding group can improve group stability, reduce trauma, and increase reproduction. Here, we used mixed-effects regression models to examine the effects of sex ratio and other factors on trauma and reproduction at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center using a historical dataset made up of four large rhesus groups over an eleven-year period (2003-2013). As expected, sex ratio was a significant predictor for both trauma and reproduction. However, group age since formation was a stronger predictor of trauma frequency and the amount of space available was a slightly better predictor of reproduction than sex ratio or trauma. These results indicate that improving sex ratios can be a viable management strategy to reduce trauma and improve reproduction, particularly when it is difficult to manipulate the group compositions and/or their housing situations. Reducing trauma is a primary goal for rhesus breeding colonies, as it directly impacts the monkeys' health and psychological well-being. Such improvements are necessary for the ethical treatment and care of the animals themselves, but also to reduce financial burdens and maintain a healthy colony for research purposes.

Agglutination Enhancing Effect of Semen on Pre-Treated Erythrocyte Rhesus D Agglutinogen in Human

Human semen serves as fluids medium in which sperm cells are dispersed and swim within. Semen contains about 90% water along with proteins that include Immunoglobulin-A (I g A), Haptoglobin, fructose sugar, other dissolved substances and electrolyte. Apart from preserving the sperm cells, semen may carry certain immunological feature as part of its protective functions. From a male partner in coital activity, semen’s cellular component and proteins deposited into the vagina do not antigenically qualify as ‘self’. This is a study to determine a possible agglutination resistant effect of semen on various types of ABO and Rhesus blood group members or agglutination enhancing effect of the same ABO and Rhesus group members. Flipped Quick-Response Code Enables Reliable Blood Grouping.

Accurate and rapid blood typing plays a vital role in a variety of biomedical and forensic scenarios, but recognizing weak agglutination remains challenging. Herein, we demonstrated a flipping identification with a prompt error-discrimination (FLIPPED) platform for automatic blood group readouts. Bromocresol green dye was exploited as a characteristic chromatography indicator for the differentiation of plasma from whole blood by presenting a teal color against a brown color. After integrating these color changes into a quick-response (QR) code, prompt typing of ABO and Rhesus groups was automatically achieved and data could be uploaded wirelessly within 30 s using a commercially available smartphone to facilitate blood cross-matching. We further designed a color correction model and algorithm to remove potential errors from scanning angles and ambient light intensities, by which weak agglutination could be accurately recognized. With comparable accuracy and repeatability to classical column assay in grouping 450 blood samples, the proposed approach further demonstrates to be a versatile sample-to-result platform for clinical diagnostics, food safety, and environmental monitoring.

P-357 The frequencies and prognostic significance of ABO blood and rhesus (D) groups in HER2-positive gastric cancer

The ABO antigens are highly expressed on the surface of epithelial cells of the gastrointestinal tract. Alterations in surface glycoconjugates on the cell may trigger the development of gastric cancer. The relationship between gastric cancer and blood group A was firstly discovered by Aird et al. The study aims to evaluate the cancer distributions and prognostic significance for the HER2 positive gastric cancer.

Transfusion practices in the pediatric and neonatology departments of Soavinandriana hospital center

Blood transfusion is an important part of day-to-day clinical practice. The main objective of this work is to describe transfusion practices in the Pediatrics and Neonatology Department of the Hospital Center of Soavinandriana. Methods: A prospective observational study of 6 months has been conducted. All requests to Department of Pediatrics and Neonatology for blood for transfusion for children aged less than 14 years were identified prospectively. The variables studied were: patients’ characteristics (age, gender) reason for hospitalization, paraclinical examinations (blood count and formula before transfusion, ABO and Rhesus grouping), the presented pathology, the indicated transfusion: nature, incidents during and after transfusion and the outcome of the pathology (healing, death). Results: The incidence was 6.54%, 33 patients had a blood transfusion. The sex ratio was 1.35. The average age is 46.06 months. Skin pallor was the main reason for hospitalization, which represented 18.18% of the cases. The average hemoglobin level was 8.08 g/dl. The O and rhesus positive blood group was the predominant in this work. The blood products which were used were: red blood cell (n=20, 54.05%), whole blood (n=15, 40.54%), fresh frozen plasma (n=1, 2.70%), platelets concentrate (n=1, 2.70%). The National Center for Blood Transfusion of the Joseph Ravoahangy Andrianavalona University Hospital Center had delivered the vast majority of the used blood bags. Conclusion: The packed red blood cell was used the most and the hospital blood bank did not have enough labile blood products. It is therefore essential to improve the structures for the preparation of blood and its derivatives, in order to make all varieties of labile blood products accessible.

Frequency of alloantibody with their specification among multitransfused patients

Background and Objectives: Alloimmunization is a very common clinical problem in transfusion-dependent patients but rarely detected in Bangladesh. The risk of alloimmunization is especially high in patients who receive repeated transfusion, i.e., thalassemia patients. The objective of this study was to investigate the seroprevalence and specificity of red blood cell antibodies in multitransfused thalassemic patients. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary care referral center from January 1, 2013, to March 31, 2016. Blood specimens were sent from different facilities and also from daycare transfusion center of the same when cross-match difficulties occur. When the Coomb's test showed positive result, then Rhesus, Kell, Kid, Duffy, and Lewis blood group typing were done according to the patients' need. Serum was used to identify the presence of alloantibody by the indirect Coomb's test with known cell panels. An autocontrol, positive and negative control for each specimen was incorporated to detect autoantibody and correctness of the procedure done. We performed a simple percentage to evaluate the analysis. Results: Of 1286 cases, alloantibody was detected in 334 (25.97%) cases. Among the 334 cases, 80 (23.95%) cases were followed up by antibody identification. The remaining 254 cases were referred cases with insufficient history and were dropped from the study. The male-to-female ratio was 1:2.2. The age group of 21–30 years showed the maximum antibody specificity (7.48%). Among the 80 samples with alloantibodies, Rh antibodies were noted in 80% (64) samples. Other antibodies detected belong to Kell, Kid, Duffy, and Lewis systems. Conclusion: Multitransfused (thalassemic) patients are more vulnerable to develop alloantibody. Therefore, routine antibody screening of donors and patients and the provision of antigen negative blood is recommended.

PHENOTYPIC FREQUENCIES OF ABO AND RH(D) BLOOD GROUPS AMONGST HEALTHY BLOOD DONORS IN BIKANER, RAJASTHAN

Background &amp; Objective: Practically, most important blood groups are A, B, O, AB and RhD(+/-), which are essential for right blood supply to the recipients and in various studies. The incidence of ABO and Rhesus (Rh) groups varies markedly in different parts of the world and in different races. The present study was aimed at determining the prevalence of ABO &amp; RhD blood groups among healthy blood donors in Western Rajasthan.&#x0D; Material and Methods: At our centre, all the healthy blood donors were assessed and analyzed for ABO-Rh blood grouping during a period of previous 4 years (from January, 2015 to December, 2018). 119200 samples were checked for ABO and RhD blood grouping by manual saline antigen-antibody agglutination method using commercially prepared antisera antiA, antiB, antiAB, antiD, in house prepared reagent cells Acell, Bcell, Ocell and negative control. The results were reconfirmed on fully automated immunohematology analyzer (Galileo Neo, USA) with direct hemagglutination micro-well plates using antiA, antiB, antiD series-5, antiD Novaclone, Monoclonal control, Acell, Bcell and Ocell provided by the manufacturer. Discrepant samples were cross checked separately by column agglutination technique using DG Gel ABO/Rh-2D cards (Diagnostic Grifols S.A.) and tube technique.&#x0D; Results: We found that the most common blood group was B+ 39758 (33.35%) followed by O+, A+, AB+, B-, O-, A- and AB-. RhD negative donors were 10504 (8.81%) among the total donors. Phenotypic frequencies were expressed under the standard assumption of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium.&#x0D; Conclusion: Present study concludes that the most common ABO phenotype found among healthy blood donors in Western Rajasthan (India) is group B with RhD negativity being 8.81%. Screening of Blood Donors for Transfusion Transmitted Infections in Tertiary Care Hospital of Faisalabad

Background: Blood transfusion saves millions of lives worldwide each year and reduces morbidity but at the same time is a source for potentially life threatening transfusion transmissible infections (TTIs). These TTIs are a threat to blood safety. Sensitive screening with advanced technologies reduces the risk of TTIs, but it still remains a major concern. Objective of this study was to determine the frequencies of various ABO blood groups and to screen the TTIs like Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Syphilis and Malaria among voluntary and replacement blood donors of Faisalabad.&#x0D; Methodology: This cross sectional study was conducted at Aziz Fatimah Hospital Faisalabad, from July 2018 to November 2018. After taking informed consent all replacement and voluntary blood donors were screened for HCV, HBV, HIV, syphilis and malaria.&#x0D; Results: During 5 months of study period, total 1942 patients, of age ranged 18-40 years, were screened for TTIs. All blood donors were male; no female came to donate blood during this duration. Highest percentage of study population were blood group B (36.9%), followed by blood group O (28.1), A (22.2%), and AB (9.2%) respectively. Frequencies and percentages of Rhesus blood groups exhibited the predominance of positive rhesus groups in the study population. Out of total donors, 78 (4%) were infected with HCV, 30 (1.5%) with HBV, 10 (0.5%) with HIV, 19 (1 %) with syphilis and 3(0.20%) were seropositive for Malaria. Therefore, 140 (7.2 %) blood donors out of total were seropositive for various TTIs.&#x0D; Conclusion: This study showed the seroprevalence of transfusion transmitted infections (TTIs) among the blood donors. Highest percentage of blood donors suffered from HCV, followed by HBV, syphilis, HIV and malaria.

Frequency of ABO/Rhesus (D) blood groupings and ethnic distribution in the Greater‐Accra region of Ghana, towards effective blood bank inventory

Knowledge on blood group phenotypes is of key importance in clinical practice. It used in blood transfusion practice to determine the direction of recruitment of voluntary donors as required for each population within a country, and for disease association and population genetics studies. This study aimed at reporting the frequency of ABO and Rhesus (Rh) groups in the population of the Greater-Accra region of Ghana and amongst their various ethnic groups. A retrospective study in 11 main hospitals within the region was done. Data collected provided information on the blood group status of persons (both blood donors and recipients) who visited the selected hospitals. Medical records used were within the years 2012-2017. A total of 42,317 (26,802 males and 15,515 females) data were retrieved and analysed. The frequencies of the blood groups O, A, B and AB were 50.0%, 24.3%, 20.7% and 5.0%, respectively. Rhesus-positive to negative ratio was 93.2%/6.2%. Frequencies of blood group O was highest (49.1%-53.6%) in all ethnic groups. The second most dominant blood group was B (24.2%-25.4%) in the Ga-Adamgbe, Akan and Ewe ethnic groups, whilst blood group A (25.0%-26.9%) was the second most dominant in the Northerners and non-Ghanaians. Blood group distribution amongst gender and different age groups showed no significant differences but followed the same pattern for the general population. The study provides data on the ethnic distribution and frequency of ABO and Rhesus blood groupings in the Greater-Accra region of Ghana. It also informs the need for blood banks in the region to increase the proportion of stockpiled Rhesus-positive blood groups especially for O, B and A that may be high in demand.
