USING THE PARENT-INFANT RELATIONSHIP GLOBAL ASSESSMENT SCALE TO IDENTIFY CAREGIVER-INFANT/TODDLER DYADS WITH ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP PATTERNS IN SIX EUROPEAN COUNTRIES.

The study examined whether the Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood, Revised Edition (DC: 0-3R; ZERO TO THREE, 2005) Parent-Infant Relationship Global Assessment Scale (PIR-GAS) is applicable to six European countries and contributes to the identification of caregiver-infant/toddler dyads with abusive relationship patterns. The sample consisted of 115 dyads with children's ages ranging from 1 to 47 months. Sixty-four dyads were recruited from community settings without known violence problems, and 51 dyads were recruited from clinical settings and already had been identified with violence problems or as being at risk for violence problems. To classify the dyads on the PIR-GAS categories, caregiver-child interactions were video-recorded and coded with observational scales appropriate for child age. To test whether the PIR-GAS allows for reliable identification of dyads with abusive relationship patterns, PIR-GAS ratings were compared with scores on the the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect's (ISPCAN) Child Abuse Screening Tool-Parental Version (ICAST-P; D.K. Runyan etal., ), a questionnaire measuring abusive parental disciplinary practices. It was found that PIR-GAS ratings differentiated between the general and the clinical sample, and the dyads with abusive patterns of relationship were identified by both the PIR-GAS and the ICAST-P. Interrater reliability for the PIR-GAS ranged from moderate to excellent. The value of a broader use of tools such as the DC: 0-3R to promote early identification of families at risk for infant and toddler abuse and neglect is discussed.

School Climate and Student Absenteeism and Internalizing and Externalizing Behavioral Problems

This study examined whether school climate variables were directly and inversely related to absenteeism severity and key symptoms of psychopathology among youths specifically referred for problematic attendance (N = 398). Adolescents in our sample completed the School Climate Survey Revised Edition, which measured sharing of resources, order and discipline, parent involvement, student interpersonal relations, and student-teacher relations. Parents completed the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale and Conners' Parent Rating Scale-Revised: Long to measure child anxiety, depression, and oppositional behavior. Measures were completed within the context of a family courts and services center or a truancy diversion program. Structural equation models revealed an inverse relationship between school climate variables and absenteeism severity as well as anxiety, depression, and oppositional behavior. Models were especially pertinent to older youths and to male youths. As predicted, alternative models for separation anxiety, perfectionism, and cognitive problems and inattention did not meet goodness-of-fit criteria. FINDINGS generally support previous work that focused on broader samples of middle and high school youths. COTTON GINNERS HANDBOOK (2016 REVISED EDITION)

The function of separating cotton fiber from the cottonseed (ginning) has been done mechanically since prehistoric times by simple wooden or metal rollers used to manually squeeze the seed apart from the fiber. Eli Whitney’s 1794 patent of the spiked tooth cotton gin and Henry Ogden Holmes’s 1796 patent of the saw tooth cotton gin significantly increased the ability of cotton producers to economically produce raw cotton fiber to be made into cotton textiles and were the predecessors of today’s modern cotton ginning plants. The separation of the cotton fiber from the seed and preservation of the cotton fiber quality is still the principal function of the modern cotton gin. However, the modern cotton ginning plant is a highly mechanized processing system that controls moisture and removes foreign materials while handling, transporting and packaging many tons per hour of bulk cottonseed and baled cotton fiber. Cotton gins must produce a raw ginned cotton fiber of a quality that maximizes its value for the producer while meeting the high demands of the textile industry and ultimately the consumer. Designing, operating and maintaining today’s cotton gin plant is a highly specialized field that continues to demand increasing technical knowledge and skills. This new Cotton Ginners Handbook addresses and updates changes over the past 20 years in ginning issues such as fiber quality, machinery maintenance and operation, moisture control, seed cotton and cotton fiber cleaning, energy use, waste handling and collection, and gin safety as well as gin management and state and federal air pollution regulatory requirements. The authors of the various chapters of this handbook hope that the information presented will help the U.S. cotton industry maintain its reputation of quality and service.

A comparison of the relationships between psychosocial factors, occupational strain, and work ability among 4 ethnic teacher groups in China

ABSTRACTThe present study compared the level of occupational strain and work ability among Han, Hui, Uygur, Hui, and Kazakh teachers, and explored ethnic differences based on the associations of psychosocial factors at work, occupational strain, and work ability. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 2,941 teachers in primary and secondary schools in Xinjiang Province, China. Psychosocial factors, occupational strain, and work ability were measured using the Occupation Stress Inventory—Revised Edition (OSI-R) and Work Ability Index. Han and Hui teachers experienced reduced work ability compared with Uygur and Kazakh teachers, and this finding was caused, in part, by exposure to psychosocial factors at work. The vocational and psychological strains caused by these factors play an important role in reduced work ability among all ethnic teacher groups. The findings indicate the importance of taking action to reduce occupational strain for promoting teachers' work ability in multiethnic workplaces.

Relationship between occupational stress and mental health in offshore oil platform workers

To investigate the relationship between occupational stress and mental health in offshore oil platform workers and to provide a scientific basis for protection of their mental health. A total of 768 workers on offshore oil platform were surveyed with the Occupational Stress Inventory Revised Edition and Symptom Check List-90 (SCL-90). The total score of Occupational Role Questionnaire (ORQ) for the workers (160.27±24.63) was significantly lower than the national norm (166.52±27.01) (P < 0.01); the total score of Personal Strain Questionnaire (PSQ) (101.96±19.8) was significantly higher than the national norm (92.45±17.33) (P < 0.01). The total score of Personal Resource Questionnaire (PRQ) for the workers was not significantly different from the national norm (P > 0.05), but the items of recreation, social support, and rational/cognitive found significant difference (P < 0.05). The total score of SCL-90 was positively correlated with all items of ORQ and PSQ (P < 0.01) and negatively correlated with all items of PRQ (P < 0.01). The multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that current work seniority, education background, drinking, role overload, role insufficiency, role ambiguity, responsibility, physical environment, and rational/cognitive conduct impacted the score of SCL-90 (P < 0.05). The mental health of workers on offshore oil platform is related to occupational stress, and role overload, role ambiguity, physical environment, and rational/cognitive conduct, etc, are closely associated with the workers' mental health.

Evidence-based, pharmacological treatment guideline for depression in Korea, revised edition.

This paper aims to introduce, summarize, and emphasize the importance of the 'Evidence-Based, Pharmacological Treatment Guideline for Depression in Korea, Revised Edition'. The guideline broadly covers most aspects of the pharmacological treatment of patients in Korea diagnosed with moderate to severe major depression according to the DSM-IV TR. The guideline establishment process involved determining and answering a number of key questions, searching and selecting publications, evaluating recommendations, preparing guideline drafts, undergoing external expert reviews, and obtaining approval. A guideline adaptation process was conducted for the revised edition. The guideline strongly recommends pharmacological treatment considered appropriate to the current clinical situation in Korea, and should be considered helpful when selecting the appropriate pharmacological treatment of patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder. Therefore, the wide distribution of this guideline is recommended.

Text (Not Manuscript) Transcriptions:Stepping-Stones to The Dublin “Ulysses” Papers Hans Walter Gabler (bio) The Dublin “Ulysses” Papers, by James Joyce, edited and annotated by Danis Rose. Six Volumes. Revised Edition. East Lansing, Michigan: House of Breathings, 2012. 1268 pages. $1000.00. A week before Christmas 2012, there arrived on my desk six large-format, paper-bound volumes. They carry a rights notice that reads: “© Danis Rose, Revised Edition; November 2012.” The preceding (first) edition was announced in April 2012 and, at a subsequent unspecified date, saw distribution. Some orders had been met by the end of May/beginning of June, in time for the 2012 International James Joyce Symposium in Dublin. No precise account is given in the revised edition of just why, within a short interval, a revision was deemed necessary, let alone how extensive it was. The foreword addressing the revised edition (printed and paginated identically in all six volumes) voices generalities about it being “well-nigh impossible to get [transcriptions] letter-perfect” and devotes just one sentence to the additional labor invested: “Over the course of the last year the texts …, especially the draft versions of the episodes, have been subjected to a major overhaul, and the result is a much more exact version” (7). This, together with some further remarks in the foreword, reads like a veiled admission that, since the “overhaul” was undertaken over the course of a year and thus was apparently begun well back in 2011, the edition of April-May 2012 was likely less than well considered and should not have seen publication in the first place—but let that pass. I have known Danis Rose for some thirty-five years. When the editorial work for the critical and synoptic edition of Ulysses began, we worked closely together for a brief span, and our conceptions for formalizing in print the genetic dimension of Joyce’s texts—of Ulysses, in my case, of Finnegans Wake, in his—were so close that we traded solutions to mutual benefit. Of his generation, Rose is one of the few richly experienced readers and transcribers of James Joyce’s hand. John O’Hanlon is his life-long fraternal partner, and together they form a sharp-eyed team whose results I would go a long way in trusting. But trust is subjective and can in scholarly exchange never exist without the counter-balance of objective checks and controls. [End Page 655] The volumes state that they present the Dublin “Ulysses” Papers transcribed, edited, and annotated. But what do these three terms mean, and how are we to know that the volumes live up to the expectations they raise? Fundamentally, the relationship of the six volumes entitled the Dublin “Ulysses” Papers to Joyce’s manuscripts held in the National Library of Ireland (NLI) are (to put it mildly) tenuous. Their catalog signatures are given, but as subsidiary references only. The cataloguing system of the NLI Ulysses holdings are nowhere discussed, nor are their provenances or their material and genetic status individually illuminated. Most seriously, we cannot be sure that the original NLI manuscripts, or even just the NLI’s digital reproductions of them, were the immediate source for Rose’s transcriptions. No acknowledgement of, or confirmation from, the NLI as owner of the originals is given, nor is the correlation of the transcriptions, immediate or mediate, to the originals defined. Throughout the six volumes, moreover, not a single manuscript or notebook page or opening is reproduced by which one might gain an impression, let alone an understanding, of how the transcriptions were performed or by which one might assess how good the transcription result is, both textually (in transliteration) and analytically (in the deployment of the diacritics). Since the NLI’s Joyce holdings are freely accessible on the internet, it is true, we can correlate the digital images there given with the transcriptions in the Rose volumes. The Dublin “Ulysses” Papers, alas, do not inform us of the possibility, let alone specifically guide us to the sources which the NLI digitally lays open. Pacific Realliances and the Future of U.S. Interests in China and Japan Stephen M. In a world experiencing dramatic, epochal changes, few regions are changing more dramatically than East Asia. The past two decades have seen an historic reversal of fortunes between the two dominant economies and societies in the region, China and Japan, the consequences of which are inevitably changing global politics, especially power politics. Japan’s relative fall and China’s not just relative, but absolute rise by every measure of national power, have fundamentally changed the geopolitical and geostrategic positions of both these countries vis-à-vis their principal counterpart, the United States. Most importantly of all, the scale and scope of China’s unprecedented global trade and financial engagement is manifested in its accumulation of over $2 trillion in U.S. Treasury bonds and other U.S securities, How have things changed? In a new book, Chimerica—U.S.-China Collusion and the Way Forward for Japan, Susumu Yabuki, professor emeritus of Yokohama City University and one of Japan’s leading China-watchers and analysts of Japan-China relations, posits that the U.S. has inevitably accepted China as its principal geopolitical partner in East Asia, if not globally, and that other regional relationships—not least that with Japan—are going to be subordinated to this partnership in the future. What, then, of the U.S.-Japan security treaty and the rest of the security framework of security constructed during the post-war occupation, the outbreak of the hot war in Korea and the Cold War with the Soviet Union? For Yabuki, the “alliance”lost its justification when the Soviet threat ceased to exist in December 1991. Since then, it has served no purpose and has actually harmed Japan’s security by providing an excuse and impetus for the capture of budgetary resources by the military industrial establishment in China. [End Page 211] Professor Yabuki’s scholarship on China, dating from 1974, is remarkable for its volume and depth. He has published exclusively in Japanese except for a translation and co-authored book (by and with this reviewer), China’s New Political Economy (Westview Press, 1995) and China’s New Political Economy— Revised Edition (Westview Press, 1999). Chimerica is a neologism for the symbiotic financial relationship between China (as producer and lender) and the United States (as consumer and borrower) coined by Professor Niall Ferguson of Harvard. For Yabuki, the defining moment of Chimerica was the Second U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue (II U.S.-China S&ED) held in Beijing in May 2010. The 100-strong U.S. delegation, led by U.S. co-chairs Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Geithner, comprised the political leadership of virtually the entire U.S. government, including Federal Reserve chairman Bernanke, with most cabinet departments sending secretaries. The Department of Defense and U.S Pacific Command were represented below the level of Defense Secretary Gates who was scheduled to meet with Chinese counterparts in the Singapore “Shangri-La Dialogue” the following month. The II U.S.-China S&ED established the framework for Gates’ talks. Discussions were not only public, but some were also held in secret. Secretary Clinton and Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo chaired a secret session at which China communicated its “core national interests” and the position that U.S. recognition and non-violation of them as the sine qua non for a positive U.S.-China political and strategic relationship. By many accounts, and according to Yabuki’s understanding, China got everything it wanted, and the U.S. was also well satisfied. In effect, the strategic framework in Asia was “reset.” How, from Japan’s perspective, it was reset was apparent from the fact that while Secretary Clinton spent a total of five days in China, where she had two intensive dialogues with Chinese counterparts, she was able to justify only three hours in Japan to meet with soon-to-resign Prime Minister Hatoyama.
