Large retroperitoneal hemangioma encompassing the renal vein

Retroperitoneal hemangioma (RH) is a rare and benign vascular malformation. RH may be detected incidentally or present with symptoms due to local invasion of adjacent structures. Management options include surgical resection, as well as serial observation with routine imaging. We describe a retroperitoneal hemangioma encompassing the renal vein that was discovered during diagnosis of acute appendicitis, and characterize diagnostic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings seen with this condition.

Prenatal diagnosis of Klippel–Trenaunay–Weber syndrome with Kasabach–Merritt syndrome in utero

Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome (KTWS), a congenital disease characterized by cutaneous hemangiomas, soft tissue and bone hypertrophy, and occasionally arteriovenous malformations, is extremely rare and its natural history in utero is unknown. We present a prenatally diagnosed case of KTWS complicated with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome in utero and fetal hydrops from acute anemia. The fetus was diagnosed with KTWS at 24 weeks of gestation based on the ultrasound findings of hemangiomas and unilateral hypertrophy of the lower extremity. Acute enlargement of the hemangiomas and the appearance of new retroperitoneal hemangiomas were detected at 27 weeks, along with skin edema and cardiomegaly. Doppler examination showed elevated peak systolic velocity in the middle cerebral artery, indicating acute fetal anemia. We believe the fetus's condition was complicated with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome in utero, which caused acute hemolytic anemia leading to high-output cardiac failure and fetal hydrops.

Retroperitoneal Hemangioma Demonstrated on Blood Pool Scan

Retroperitoneal hemangioma is a rare but clinically significant condition that can be challenging to diagnose and characterize on anatomical imaging alone. We present a case of an 80-year-old woman with diabetes and hypertension, who was found to have an abdominal mass diagnosed first on CT abdomen and pelvis in March 2011 and demonstrated to be stable on subsequent MRI study performed 16 months later in July 2012. The mass was later confirmed to be a hemangioma on a 99mTc-red cell study.

Retroperitoneal cavernous hemangioma resected by a pylorus preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy

A retroperitoneal hemangioma is a rare disease. We report on the diagnosis and treatment of a retroperitoneal hemangioma which had uncommonly invaded into both the pancreas and duodenum, thus requiring a pylorus preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (PpPD). A 36-year-old man presented to our hospital with abdominal pain. An enhanced computed tomography scan without contrast enhancement revealed a 12 cm × 9 cm mass between the pancreas head and right kidney. Given the high rate of malignancy associated with retroperitoneal tumors, surgical resection was performed. Intraoperatively, the tumor was inseparable from both the duodenum and pancreas and PpPD was performed due to the invasive behavior. Although malignancy was suspected, pathological diagnosis identified the tumor as a retroperitoneal cavernous hemangioma for which surgical resection was the proper diagnostic and therapeutic procedure. Reteoperitoneal cavernous hemangioma is unique in that it is typically separated from the surrounding organs. However, clinicians need to be aware of the possibility of a case, such as this, which has invaded into the surrounding organs despite its benign etiology. From this case, we recommend that combined resection of inseparable organs should be performed if the mass has invaded into other tissues due to the hazardous nature of local recurrence. In summary, this report is the first to describe a case of retroperitoneal hemangioma that had uniquely invaded into surrounding organs and was treated with PpPD.

A large retroperitoneal cystic venous malformation mimicking bilateral ovarian cystic tumors

Retroperitoneal cysts are a rare disease. Most retroperitoneal cysts of vascular origin have been reported as hemangiomas. However, according to the recent classification of vascular anomalies accepted by the International Society for Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA), these previously reported retroperitoneal hemangiomas should rather have been classified as vascular malformations. A 65-year-old woman visited our hospital complaining of a sense of unexplained abdominal fullness. Magnetic resonance imaging suggested a uterine leiomyoma and bilateral ovarian cystic tumors. However, abdominal surgery revealed normal bilateral ovaries, but huge cystic masses in the retroperitoneum. Postoperative histological diagnosis of the retroperitoneal cysts demonstrated that they were venous malformations. This is a rare case in which large cystic retroperitoneal venous malformations were preoperatively diagnosed as ovarian cystic tumors. Retroperitoneal hemangiomas should be renamed as vascular malformations following the ISSVA classification.

A Case of Incidentally Found Bilateral Retroperitoneal Cavernous Hemangiomas

A 59-year-old male was admitted to our hospital because of incidentally found right retroperitoneal tumor. He had undergone removal of a hemangioma in the left oral cavity four years before. An abdominal CT scan performed in our hospital revealed poorly enhanced bilateral retroperitoneal tumors adjacent to kidneys. Those tumors were of low signal intensity on T1-weighted images and high on T2-weighted images by magnetic resonance imaging. The right retroperitoneal tumor of 2.5 cm in size was surgically removed and histopathological examination indicated cavernous hemangioma. The smaller left retroperitoneal tumor of 1.1 cm in size was left untouched to be followed up, as we supposed that it has the same benign pathology. There have been no previous cases of retroperitoneal cavernous hemangioma as a presentation of multiple hemangiomas.

Laparoscopic Resection of a Retroperitoneal Hemangioma Arising from Ovarian Vessels

Hemangiomas are known to be common benign tumors. However, hemangiomas of female genital organs are very rare. Furthermore, a retroperitoneal hemangioma arising from ovarian vessels has never been reported. Here we report a case of a 29-year-old woman with a retroperitoneal cavernous hemangioma arising from the ovarian vessels of infundibulopelvic ligament, which was treated with laparoscopic resection. The operating time was 30 minutes, and resection was carried out with minimal blood loss. The postoperative period was uneventful, and the patient was discharged on postoperative day 3. Laparoscopic resection of this type of hemangioma is feasible.

Complete recovery after the removal of an ectopic testicle in a case of primary reninism and retroperitoneal hemangioma

A 32-year-old man recovered completely from hypokalemic hypertension that had been caused by primary reninism after the ablation of an ectopic left testis, epididymis and ductus deferens. For several years, severe hypertension has been resistant to treatment, even the concurrent administration of up to seven antihypertensive agents. In this case, cryptorchidism was associated with an indirect inguinal hernia and an open peritoneo-vaginal process on both sides, aplasia of the posterior wall of the inguinal canal on the right side, an umbilical hernia, and a retroperitoneal tendrillar hemangioma.

Perineal hemangioma, anorectal malformation, and genital anomaly: A new association?

Two patients presented as full-term baby girls with anorectal and genital malformations with extensive perineal hemangiomas. The first patient had a vestibular anus with a perineal hemangioma involving the bladder, rectal, and vaginal walls. Skin ulcerations required a transverse loop colostomy for wound care. The vulva, urethral opening, and clitoris were deviated to the left, labia minora were absent, and the labia majora were abnormal. The second patient had an anus displaced anteriorly and deviated to the right. The external anal sphincter was hypertrophic on the left and atrophic on the right. Rectal examination showed agenesis of the right levator ani and a dentate line located at the skin level. She had a large perineal, sacral, vaginal, pararectal and retroperitoneal hemangioma and developed extensive skin ulcerations. She had only a hemiclitoris located to the left of the midline, near absence of labia minora, and hypertrophied labia majora. The urethra was displaced to the left and opened in the vestibule. Both patients had a spinal malformation (one with tethered cord and one with spina bifida) and a normal karyotype. Steroids and interferon allowed nearcomplete resolution of hemangiomas in both patients. The authors were impressed by the similarity of these two cases and could not find any previous description of this association.

Retroperitoneal venous hemangioma

Retroperitoneal venous hemangioma is a very rare condition. Only two cases have been reported in the English literature. We report the case of a 28-yr-old man with a retroperitoneal venous hemangioma who underwent surgical resection. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging revealed a retroperitoneal tumor with low signal intensity on the T 1-weighted image and high signal intensity on the T 2-weighted image, typical of hemangiomas. In addition, it showed a partial interruption of the muscle layer surrounding the tumor. Intraoperative findings showed a large, reddish brown retroperitoneal mass with an ill defined capsule firmly attached to the muscular tissue surrounding the tumor. Retroperitoneal hemangioma is rare and is almost always of the cavernous type. Although accurate pre- and intraoperative diagnosis of retroperitoneal venous hemangiomas is difficult, magnetic resonance imaging and the presence of a firm attachment to the muscles may be helpful for the important diagnostic findings of this disease.

Successful treatment of neonatal retroperitoneal hemangioma with corticosteroid

Systemic corticosteroid therapy has been helpful in the treatment of cutaneous and hepatic hemangiomas. The size of the mass has decreased, thrombocytopenia has improved, and cutaneous ulcerations have healed. However, the use of corticosteroid therapy in hemangiomas is still controversial. This report describes a large retroperitoneal hemangioma in a neonate, which was successfully treated with corticosteroids.
