Characterization of dust aerosols from ALADIN and CALIOP measurements

Abstract. Atmospheric aerosols have pronounced effects on climate at both regional and global scales, but the magnitude of these effects is subject to considerable uncertainties. A major contributor to these uncertainties is an incomplete understanding of the vertical structure of aerosol, largely due to observational limitations. Spaceborne lidars can directly observe the vertical distribution of aerosols globally and are increasingly used in atmospheric aerosol remote sensing. As the first spaceborne high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL), the Atmospheric LAser Doppler INstrument (ALADIN) on board the Aeolus satellite was operational from 2018 to 2023. ALADIN data can be used to estimate aerosol extinction and co-polar backscatter coefficients separately without an assumption of the lidar ratio. This study assesses the performance of ALADIN's aerosol retrieval capabilities by comparing them with Cloud-Aerosol LIdar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) measurements. A statistical analysis of retrievals from both instruments during the June 2020 Saharan dust event indicates consistency between the observed backscatter and extinction coefficients. During this extreme dust event, CALIOP-derived aerosol optical depth (AOD) exhibited large discrepancies with Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Aqua measurements. Using collocated ALADIN observations to revise the dust lidar ratio to 63.5 sr, AODs retrieved from CALIOP are increased by 46 %, improving the comparison with MODIS data. The combination of measurements from ALADIN and CALIOP can enhance the tracking of aerosols' vertical transport. This study demonstrates the potential for spaceborne HSRL to retrieve aerosol optical properties. It highlights the benefits of spaceborne HSRL in directly obtaining the lidar ratio, significantly reducing uncertainties in extinction retrievals.

Aerosol Optical Properties Retrieved by Polarization Raman Lidar: Methodology and Strategy of a Quality-Assurance Tool

Aerosol optical properties retrieved using polarization Raman lidar observations play an increasingly vital role in meteorology and environmental protection. The quality of the data products directly affects the impact of relevant scientific applications. However, the quality of aerosol optical properties retrieved from polarization Raman lidar signals is difficult to assess. Various factors, such as hardware system performance, retrieval algorithm, and meteorological conditions at the observation site, influence data quality. In this study, we propose a method that allows for assessing the reliability of aerosol optical properties derived from polarization Raman lidar observations. We analyze the factors that affect the reliability of retrieved aerosol optical properties. We use scoring methods combined with a weight-assignment scheme to evaluate the quality of the retrieved aerosol optical properties. The scores and weights of each factor are arranged based on our analysis of a simulation study and the characteristics of each factor. We developed an automatic retrieval algorithm that allows for deriving homogeneous aerosol optical data sets. We also assess with this method the quality of retrieved aerosol optical properties obtained with different polarization Raman lidars under different measurement scenarios. Our results show that the proposed quality assurance method can distinguish the reliability of the retrieved aerosol optical properties.

Improved algorithm for retrieving aerosol optical properties based on multi-wavelength Raman lidar.

Multi-wavelength Raman lidar has been widely used in profiling aerosol optical properties. The accuracy of measured aerosol optical properties largely depends on sophisticated lidar data retrieval algorithms. Commonly to retrieve aerosol optical properties of Raman lidar, the extinction-related Ångström exponent (EAE) is assumed (to be 1). This value usually generally differs from the true value (called EAE deviation) and adds uncertainty to the retrieved aerosol optical properties. Lidar-signal noise and EAE-deviation are two important error sources for retrieving aerosol optical properties. As the measurement accuracy of Raman lidar has been greatly improved in recent years, the influence of signal noise on retrieval results becomes relatively small, and the uncertainty of retrieved aerosol optical properties caused by an EAE-deviation becomes nonnegligible, especially in scenes that EAE deviation is large. In this study, an iteration retrieval algorithm is proposed to obtain more reliable EAE based on multi-wavelength Raman lidar. Results from this iteration are more precise values of aerosol optical properties. Three atmospheric scenarios where aerosol distribution and the values of EAE vary widely were simulated with a Monte Carlo method to analyze the characteristics and robustness of the iterative algorithm. The results show that the proposed iterative algorithm can eliminate the systematic errors of aerosol optical properties retrieved by traditional retrieval method. The EAEs after iteration does converge to the true value, and the accuracy of aerosol optical properties can be greatly improved, especially for the particle backscatter coefficient and lidar ratio, which has been improved by more than 10% in most cases, and even more than 30%. In addition, field observations data of a three-wavelength Raman lidar are analyzed to illustrate the necessity and reliability of the proposed iterative retrieval algorithm.

Retrieval of aerosol optical properties from GOCI-II observations: Continuation of long-term geostationary aerosol monitoring over East Asia

Since the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) was successfully launched in 2010, the GOCI Yonsei aerosol retrieval (YAER) algorithm has been continuously updated to retrieve hourly aerosol optical properties. GOCI-II has 4 more channels including UV, finer spatial resolution (250 m), and daily full disk coverage as compared to GOCI, and was launched in February 2020, onboard the GEO-KOMPSAT-2B (GK-2B) satellite. In this study, we extended the YAER algorithm to GOCI-II data based on its improved performance in many aspects and present the first results of aerosol optical properties retrieved from GOCI-II data. Utilizing the overlapping period between the GOCI-II and GOCI in geostationary Earth orbit, we present GOCI-II aerosol retrievals for high aerosol-loading cases over East Asia and show that these have a consistent spatial distribution with those from GOCI. Furthermore, GOCI-II provides AOD at an even higher spatial resolution, revealing finer changes in aerosol concentrations. Validation results for one year data show that the GOCI-II AOD has a correlation coefficient of 0.83 and a ratio within the expected error (EE) of 59.4 % when compared with the aerosol robotic network (AERONET) data. We compared statistical metrics for the GOCI and GOCI-II AODs to assess the consistency between the two datasets. In addition, it was found that there is a strong correlation between the two datasets from the comparison of gridded GOCI and GOCI-II AOD products. It is expected that data from GOCI-II will continue long-term aerosol records with high accuracy that can be used to address air-quality issues over East Asia.

Aerosol Optical Properties and Type Retrieval via Machine Learning and an All-Sky Imager

This study investigates the applicability of using the sky information from an all-sky imager (ASI) to retrieve aerosol optical properties and type. Sky information from the ASI, in terms of Red-Green-Blue (RGB) channels and sun saturation area, are imported into a supervised machine learning algorithm for estimating five different aerosol optical properties related to aerosol burden (aerosol optical depth, AOD at 440, 500 and 675 nm) and size (Ångström Exponent at 440–675 nm, and Fine Mode Fraction at 500 nm). The retrieved aerosol optical properties are compared against reference measurements from the AERONET station, showing adequate agreement (R: 0.89–0.95). The AOD errors increased for higher AOD values, whereas for AE and FMF, the biases increased for coarse particles. Regarding aerosol type classification, the retrieved properties can capture 77.5% of the total aerosol type cases, with excellent results for dust identification (>95% of the cases). The results of this work promote ASI as a valuable tool for aerosol optical properties and type retrieval.

A Comprehensive Review on Study Methods of Aerosol Optical Properties in Different Dimensions

A comprehensive understanding of the optical properties of atmospheric aerosol is essential for a variety of applications, such as optical imaging, optical communication, and remote sensing. In recent years, many theories and numerical simulation methods have been developed to connect aerosol physical-chemical properties to their intrinsic and integral optical properties. Usually, simulations and measurements are intertwined to synergistically attain the retrieval of aerosol optical properties and mitigate or even eliminate the adverse impacts of aerosol during imaging, sensing, or communication. This review covers the fundamental theories of aerosol optical properties, the development of numerical simulations, the instrument-based sampling measurements, and the cutting-edge techniques of remote sensing. Numerical simulations have been progressing from symmetric particles to asymmetric particles over the past two decades, although any simulation method is limited by specific shape and a restricted size parameter range. Thus, this review also examines the most typical advances in aerosol instrumentation that are frequently used to measure the intrinsic optical properties of unknown aerosols. Such obtained properties validate simulations and constitute the basis of integral optical properties. In terms of practical applications, integral optical properties are the most critical knowledge about atmospheric aerosol. Remote sensing measurements, be it ground-based, airborne, or satellite-based, all retrieve integral optical properties of atmospheric aerosol from various perspectives, which are elaborated upon in this review. In conclusion, this review provides an all-encompassing comprehension of aerosol optical properties.

The retrieval of aerosol optical properties based on a random forest machine learning approach: Exploration of geostationary satellite images

Aerosol optical properties are among the most fundamental parameters in atmospheric environmental studies. Satellite aerosols retrievals that are based on deep learning or machine learning approach have been widely discussed in remote sensing studies, but the flexible random forest (RF) model has not received much attention in the retrieval of geostationary satellite, like Himawari-8. Thus, the Himawari-8 aerosol retrieval achieved by RF model requires further investigation and optimization. Based on the radiative transfer equation, this study proposed a RF model driven by a differential operator, which quantifies a simple linear relationship between aerosol optical depth (AOD) and top-of-atmosphere (TOA) reflectance enhancement. The spectral information of aerosols is achieved by independent TOA reflectance comparison between images rather than one result from multiple band synthesis. The method allows simple feature inputs and shows weak dependence on auxiliary data. It also achieves simultaneous retrievals over different surfaces and maintains mathematical correlation between spectral AODs and Angstrom Exponents (AE). The model performance was evaluated using a series of comprehensive temporal and spatial validation analyses. A sample-based tenfold cross-validation (10-CV) shows that the new method can simultaneously improve the estimation of aerosol properties, with considerably high correlation coefficients (R2) of 0.85 for AODs at the 0.50 μm wavelengths, a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.08, a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.13 and >70% of the samples fell within the AOD expected error (EE). The high accuracy of the spectral AOD retrievals also exhibits good performance on AE calculations, with at least 2/3 of the samples falling within the EE. The site based 10-CV also evaluates the spatial predictions on AODs at the 0.50 μm wavelength, with R2 of 0.67, MAE of 0.12 and RMSE of 0.18. It also has outperformed the Himawari operational aerosol products and appeared to be comparable to other popular machine learning models with better AE retrievals in some typical regions. Two typical regional pollution cases also highlight the advantages of the new aerosol monitoring approach. The 5 km resolution aerosol retrievals exhibit good spatial coverage and performance when describing the regional pollution levels and types. The proposed method improves the performance of RF in retrieving aerosol properties from geostationary satellites and also offers a new prospective for aerosol remote sensing using machine learning approaches.

Investigation of the effective transmittance of Mach-Zehnder interferometer in the multi-longitudinal-mode high-spectral-resolution lidar

Effective transmittance is an important parameter of Mach-Zehnder interferometer in the retrieval of aerosol optical properties using the multi-longitudinal-mode high-spectral-resolution lidar, which is a function of the complex degree of coherence. In this paper, we retrieve the parameter of the complex degree of coherence for the multi-longitudinal-mode laser from the theoretical analysis, optical simulation and experimental measurements, which are 0.726, 0.678 and 0.453 using the Mach-Zehnder interferometer with the optimal optical path difference of two times of laser optical cavity length (∼1000 mm) and under the light illumination of the high power Nd:YAG laser with the mode number of 101 and mode interval of 300 MHz under the condition of laser linewidth of 1 cm−1 (30 GHz). The preliminary measurement results of aerosol optical properties using the constructing multi-longitudinal-mode high-spectral-resolution lidar show that the difference of the complex degree of coherence retrieved from the presented methods results in the relative error of 40% in the aerosol backscattering coefficient with thin cloud layer and 90% with the presence of dense aerosol layer.

Retrieval of Aerosol Optical Properties over Land Using an Optimized Retrieval Algorithm Based on the Directional Polarimetric Camera

The Directional Polarization Camera (DPC) onboard the Chinese Gaofen-5 satellite, launched in May 2018, has similar specifications as the POLDER-3 instrument. The SRON Remote Sensing of Trace gas and Aerosol Products (RemoTAP) full retrieval algorithm is applied to DPC measurements to retrieve aerosol properties including the total Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD), the fine/coarse mode AOD and the SSA (Single Scattering Albedo). Measurements of the global ground-based AERONET network between December 2019 and April 2020 have been used for the validation of the DPC retrievals. According to the average Fine Mode Fraction (FMF) of the selected AERONET stations, the stations are divided into urban stations (FMF ≥ 0.5) and dust stations (FMF < 0.5). For the total AOD validation, DPC retrievals show better performance over urban stations than over dust stations, with average biases of 0.055 and 0.106, and RMSEs of 0.151 and 0.228, respectively. Regarding the fine mode AOD, the retrieval also performs better over urban stations. Compared with the total AOD validation, both the relatively lower bias (0.021 and 0.065) and the higher Gfrac (Fraction of Good retrieval, 63.8% and 47.3%, respectively) further indicate that DPC performs better when fine mode aerosols dominate. For the land SSA validation, most of our SSA retrievals (~71%) show differences with AERONET SSA retrievals lower than 0.05. Case studies over fire spots and dust over northern China demonstrate the encouraging application potential of DPC aerosol products. The difference between fine and coarse AOD can provide more aerosol source information compared with the total AOD alone. Since the SSA retrievals are particularly sensitive to absorbing fine particles, they can be easily used in the tracking of biomass burning aerosol.

Airborne observations during KORUS-AQ show that aerosol optical depths are more spatially self-consistent than aerosol intensive properties

Abstract. Aerosol particles can be emitted, transported, removed, or transformed, leading to aerosol variability at scales impacting the climate (days to years and over hundreds of kilometers) or the air quality (hours to days and from meters to hundreds of kilometers). We present the temporal and spatial scales of changes in AOD (aerosol optical depth) and aerosol size (using Ångström exponent – AE; fine-mode fraction – FMF) over Korea during the 2016 KORUS-AQ (KORea–US Air Quality) atmospheric experiment. We use measurements and retrievals of aerosol optical properties from airborne instruments for remote sensing (4STAR; Spectrometers for Sky-Scanning Sun-Tracking Atmospheric Research) and in situ (LARGE; NASA Langley Aerosol Research Group Experiment) on board the NASA DC-8 and geostationary satellites (GOCI; Geostationary Ocean Color Imager; Yonsei aerosol retrieval – YAER, version 2) as well as from reanalysis (MERRA-2; Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, version 2). Measurements from 4STAR when flying below 1000 m show an average AOD at 501 nm of 0.36 and an average AE of 1.11 with large standard deviation (0.12 and 0.15 for AOD and AE, respectively), likely due to mixing of different aerosol types (fine and coarse mode). The majority of AOD due to fine-mode aerosol is observed at altitudes lower than 2 km. Even though there are large variations, for 18 out of the 20 flight days, the column AOD measurements by 4STAR along the NASA DC-8 flight trajectories match the South Korean regional average derived from GOCI. GOCI-derived FMF, which was found to be slightly low compared to AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) sites (Choi et al., 2018), is lower than 4STAR's observations during KORUS-AQ. Understanding the variability of aerosols helps reduce uncertainties in the aerosol direct radiative effect by quantifying the errors due to interpolating between sparse aerosol observation sites or modeled pixels, potentially reducing uncertainties in the upcoming observational capabilities. We observed that, contrary to the prevalent understanding, AE and FMF are more spatially variable than AOD during KORUS-AQ, even when accounting for potential sampling biases by using Monte Carlo resampling. Averaging between measurements and models for the entire KORUS-AQ period, the reduction in correlation by 15 % is 65.0 km for AOD and shorter at 22.7 km for AE. While there are observational and model differences, the predominant factor influencing spatial–temporal homogeneity is the meteorological period. High spatiotemporal variability occurs during the dynamic period (25–31 May), and low spatiotemporal variability occurs during the blocking pattern (1–7 June). While AOD and FMF / AE are interrelated, the spatial variability and relative variability of these parameters in this study indicate that microphysical processes vary at scales shorter than aerosol concentration processes at which microphysical processes such as aerosol particle formation, growth, and coagulation mostly impact the dominant aerosol size (characterized by, e.g., FMF / AE) and to some degree AOD. In addition to impacting aerosol size, aerosol concentration processes such as aerosol emission, transport, and removal mostly impact the AOD.

Two Practical Methods to Retrieve Aerosol Optical Properties from Coherent Doppler Lidar

Complexly distributed aerosol particles have significant impacts on climate and environmental changes. As one of the vital atmospheric power sources, the wind field deeply affects the distribution and transport of aerosol particles. For a more comprehensive investigation of the aerosols flux and transport mechanism, two retrieval methods of aerosol optical properties (backscatter coefficient and extinction coefficient at 1550 nm) from coherent Doppler lidar (CDL) observation are proposed in this paper. The first method utilizes the calculated aerosol backscatter coefficient (532 nm) from Mie-scattering lidar datasets and the iterative Fernald method to retrieve aerosol optical property profiles during joint measurements with CDL and Mie-scattering lidar. After verifying the correctness of the first method compared with AERONET datasets, we proposed the second retrieval method. Using the forward integral Fernald method with near-ground reference aerosol extinction coefficient calculated by atmospheric visibility, aerosol optical properties at 1550 nm could be obtained. Thirty-six-day joint measurements with two lidars were specially designed and conducted to verify the correctness of these retrieval methods. The validation results of these two methods indicate great performances, where the mean relative errors are 0.0272 and 0.1656, and the correlation coefficients are 0.9306 and 0.9197, respectively. In conclusion, the feasibility of these two retrieval methods extends the capability of CDL to detect aerosol optical properties and also provides a possibility to observe the aerosol distribution and transport process comprehensively, which is a great promotion of aerosol transport studies development.

Numerical Weather Predictions and Re-Analysis as Input for Lidar Inversions: Assessment of the Impact on Optical Products

The atmospheric molecular number density can be obtained from atmospheric temperature and pressure profiles and is a significant input parameter for the inversion of lidar measurements. When measurements of vertical profiles of temperature and pressure are not available, atmospheric models are typically considered a valid alternative option. This paper investigates the influence of different atmospheric models (forecast and reanalysis) on the retrieval of aerosol optical properties (extinction and backscatter coefficients) by applying Raman and elastic-only methods to lidar measurements, to assess their use in lidar data processing. In general, reanalyzes are more accurate than forecasts, but, typically, they are not delivered in time for allowing near-real-time lidar data analysis. However, near-real-time observation is crucial for real-time monitoring of the environment and meteorological studies. The forecast models used in the paper are provided by the Integrated Forecasting System operated by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (IFS_ECMWF) and the Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS), whereas the reanalysis model is obtained from the fifth-generation European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts ReAnalysis v5 (ERA5). The lidar dataset consists of measurements collected from four European Aerosol Research Lidar Network (EARLINET) stations during two intensive measurement campaigns and includes more than 200 cases at wavelengths of 355 nm, 532 nm, and 1064 nm. We present and discuss the results and influence of the forecast and reanalysis models in terms of deviations of the derived aerosol optical properties. The results show that the mean relative deviation in molecular number density is always below ±3%, while larger deviations are shown in the derived aerosol optical properties, and the size of the deviation depends on the retrieval method together with the different wavelengths. In general, the aerosol extinction coefficient retrieval is more dependent on the model used than the aerosol backscatter retrievals are. The larger influence on the extinction retrieval is mainly related to the deviation in the gradient of the temperature profile provided by forecast and reanalysis models rather than the absolute deviation of the molecular number density. We found that deviations in extinction were within ±5%, with a probability of 83% at 355 nm and 60% at 532 nm. Moreover, for aerosol backscatter coefficient retrievals, different models can have a larger impact when the backscatter coefficient is retrieved with the elastic method than when the backscatter coefficient is calculated using the Raman method at both 355 nm and 532 nm. In addition, the atmospheric aerosol load can also influence the deviations in the aerosol extinction and backscatter coefficients, showing a larger impact under low aerosol loading scenarios.

Constrained Retrievals of Aerosol Optical Properties Using Combined Lidar and Imager Measurements During the FIREX-AQ Campaign

Smoke aerosols arise from a variety of regional sources and fuel types dependent on the properties of the fire, leading to spatial variability in smoke composition and optical properties. After emission, these aerosols age and mix in the atmosphere with other aerosol species, such as sulfates, altering the optical, and microphysical properties of the smoke aerosols over time. Thus, lidar ratio (extinction to backscatter ratio) derived from lidar sensors exhibit spatiotemporal variability for smoke. Traditional backscatter lidar processing algorithms employ a signal loss method that utilizes the reduction of signals below and above cloud layers, enabling simultaneous retrievals of both layer-averaged lidar ratio and particulate extinction, which avoids the need for assigning lidar ratios based on layer type as is typically used for backscatter lidar algorithms. In this study, the signal loss method, which is traditionally designed for cloud property retrievals, is attempted for elevated smoke plume property retrievals using NASA’s Cloud Physics Lidar (CPL) observations from the 2019 Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments and Air Quality (FIREX-AQ) field campaign. Good agreement (linear correlation coefficient of 0.67) is found between aerosol optical depth (AOD) derived from the signal loss method and the constrained method, utilizing collocated GOES MAGARA AOD values as constraints for lidar ratio retrievals, for the Williams Flats smoke event. Differences in derived lidar ratios from the signal loss method and the constrained method (13.6 and 7.4%) are found to be smaller than the expected signal loss lidar ratio error estimate of ∼17–23%. A good agreement is also found in lidar ratios derived from this study and from using Differential Absorption Lidar-High Spectral Resolution Lidar (DIAL-HSRL) measurements for the Williams Flats Fire. The lidar ratio statistics of smoke plumes presented in this analysis (51 ± 13 sr) also compare favorably with lidar ratio values found in previous studies; however, they remain lower than the assumed smoke lidar ratio of 70 sr (at 532 nm) used by CALIPSO and CPL, and vary with plume transport distance. These findings suggest lidar ratio is likely to be regionally specific and evolve with plume transport. Thus, innovative methods for simultaneous retrieval of lidar ratio and aerosol extinction, such as the signal loss method proposed in this study, are needed for accurate aerosol retrievals from standard backscatter lidars in the future.

Multi-Sensor Retrieval of Aerosol Optical Properties for Near-Real-Time Applications Using the Metop Series of Satellites: Concept, Detailed Description, and First Validation

The Polar Multi-Sensor Aerosol product (PMAp) is based on the synergistic use of three instruments from the Metop platform, GOME-2, AVHRR, and IASI. The retrieval algorithm includes three major steps: a pre-identification of the aerosol class, a selection of the aerosol model, and a calculation of the Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD). This paper provides a detailed description of the PMAp retrieval, which combines information provided by the three instruments. The retrieved AOD is qualitatively evaluated, and a good temporal as well as spatial performance is observed, including for the transition between ocean and land. More quantitatively, the performance is evaluated by comparison to AERONET in situ measurements. Very good consistency is also observed when compared to other space-based data such as MODIS or VIIRS. The paper demonstrates the ability of this first generation of synergistic products to derive reliable AOD, opening the door for the development of synergistic products from the instruments to be embarked on the coming Metop Second Generation platform. PMAp has been operationally distributed in near-real-time since 2014 over ocean, and 2016 over land.

Multi‐Year Seasonal Trends in Sea Ice, Chlorophyll Concentration, and Marine Aerosol Optical Depth in the Bellingshausen Sea

AbstractThis study presents seasonal trends in marine tropospheric aerosol arising from the interplay between physical and biological processes in the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP). Remote sensing‐based studies focused on aerosol distribution and links to chlorophyll‐a concentration and sea ice predominantly use passive sensor retrievals of aerosol optical properties. However, these data are subject to cloud presence, signal uncertainties, and lack of retrievals in high latitude wintertime. To address these concerns, we have developed a method of quantifying tropospheric marine aerosol with the NASA Cloud‐Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO), which we term marine aerosol optical depth (MAOD). MAOD may be retrieved in nighttime conditions of high‐latitude winter and is devoid of cloud contamination, thereby advancing upon prior aerosol optical depth (AOD) measurements linked with biogenic aerosol. To examine trends in tropospheric marine aerosol, we undertook a multi‐year remote sensing analysis in the Bellingshausen Sea from 2006 to 2018. A seasonal increase in MAOD was observed alongside a seasonal increase in chl‐a and sea ice melt, suggesting a biogenic component to aerosol presence. To the best of our knowledge, this study is also the first to further distinguish a late winter to early spring temporal MAOD signal, likely tied to an aerosol source from either venting of biogenic aerosol from breaks in sea ice or to sea spray/salt aerosol resulting from pulses in wind speed. Our work extends upon previous findings of AOD in polar environments and now more fully characterizes interactions during polar winter.

Analysis of simultaneous aerosol and ocean glint retrieval using multi-angle observations

Abstract. Since early 2000, NASA's Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) instrument has been performing remote sensing retrievals of aerosol optical properties from the polar-orbiting Terra spacecraft. A noteworthy aspect of MISR observations over the ocean is that, for much of the Earth, some of the multi-angle views have contributions from solar reflection by the ocean surface (glint, or glitter), while others do not. Aerosol retrieval algorithms often discard these glint-influenced observations because they can overwhelm the signal and are difficult to predict without knowledge of the (wind-speed-driven) ocean surface roughness. However, theoretical studies have shown that multi-angle observations of a location at geometries with and without reflected sun glint can be a rich source of information, sufficient to support simultaneous retrieval of both the aerosol state and the wind speed at the ocean surface. We are in the early stages of creating such an algorithm. In this paper, we describe our assessment of the appropriate level of parameterization for simultaneous aerosol and ocean surface property retrievals using sun glint. For this purpose, we use generalized nonlinear retrieval analysis (GENRA), an information content assessment (ICA) technique employing Bayesian inference, and simulations from the Ahmad–Fraser iterative radiative transfer code. We find that four parameters are suitable: aerosol optical depth (τ), particle size distribution (expressed as the fine mode fraction f of small particles in a bimodal size distribution), surface wind speed (w), and relative humidity (r, to define the aerosol water content and complex refractive index). None of these parameters define ocean optical properties, as we found that the aerosol state could be retrieved with the nine MISR near-infrared views alone, where the ocean body is strongly absorbing in the open ocean. We also found that retrieval capability varies with observation geometry and that as τ increases so does the ability to determine aerosol intensive optical properties (r and f, while it decreases for w). Increases in w decrease the ability to determine the true value of that parameter but have minimal impact on retrieval of aerosol properties. We explored the benefit of excluding the two most extreme MISR view angles for which radiative transfer with the plane-parallel approximation is less certain, but we found no advantage in doing so. Finally, the impact of treating wind speed as a scalar parameter, rather than as a two-parameter directional wind, was tested. While the simpler scalar model does contribute to overall aerosol uncertainty, it is not sufficiently large to justify the addition of another dimension to parameter space. An algorithm designed upon these principles is in development. It will be used to perform an atmospheric correction with MISR for coincident ocean color (OC) observations by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument, also on the NASA Terra spacecraft. Unlike MISR, MODIS is a single-view-angle instrument, but it has a more complete set of spectral channels ideal for determination of optical ocean properties. The atmospheric correction of MODIS OC data can therefore benefit from MISR aerosol retrievals. Furthermore, higher-spatial-resolution data from coincident MISR observations may also improve glint screening.

Calibration and Retrieval of Aerosol Optical Properties Measured with Coherent Doppler Lidar

AbstractA practical method for instrumental calibration and aerosol optical properties retrieval based on coherent Doppler lidar (CDL) and sun photometer is presented in this paper. To verify its feasibility and accuracy, this method is applied into three field experiments in 2019 and 2020. In this method, multiwavelength (440, 670, 870, and 1020 nm) aerosol optical depth (AOD) from sun-photometer measurements are used to estimate AOD at 1550 nm and calibrate integrated CDL backscatter signal. Then it is validated by comparing the retrieved calibrated AOD at 1550 nm from CDL signal and that from sun-photometer measurements. Good agreement between them with the correlation of 0.96, the RMSE of 0.0085, and the mean relative error of 22% is found. From the comparison results of these three experiments, sun photometer is verified to be an effective reference instrument for the calibration of CDL return signal and the aerosol optical properties measurement with CDL is feasible. It is expected to promote the study on the aerosol flux and transport mechanism in the planetary boundary layer with the widely deployed CDLs.

Development of an Algorithm to Retrieve Aerosol Optical Properties Over Water Using an Artificial Neural Network Radiative Transfer Scheme: First Result From GOSAT-2/CAI-2

In this study, we developed a fast yet flexible remote sensing algorithm to estimate the aerosol optical properties over water for the Cloud and Aerosol Imager-2 (CAI-2) onboard the Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite-2 (GOSAT-2) launched in October 2018. The CAI-2 is the successor of GOSAT/CAI by providing more spectral and finer spatial data. The algorithm uses the optimal estimation approach to simultaneously retrieve aerosol and water substances (SIRAW), combined with an artificial neural network (ANN) solver to perform the radiative transfer (RT) calculation. The ANN was well constructed based on an improved learning scheme and educated from a coupled atmosphere-ocean vector RT model over both open and coastal water. To investigate the availability of SIRAW, the retrieval was conducted using the real CAI-2 data and preliminarily validated via the ground-based observation of aerosol robotic network and maritime aerosol network over different ocean regions from March to November in 2019. Results demonstrated that the retrieved aerosol optical thickness (AOT) at 550 nm from CAI-2 had a good consistency to the <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">in situ</i> measurement, of which about 70.37% of CAI-2 AOT fell within a ±(0.05+10%) envelope. The algorithm developed by this study performed generally well for the AOTs and oceanic suspended particles over the global ocean through the intercomparison to those of MODIS products. Moreover, the ultraviolet channel of CAI-2, which produces the first application with 500-m spatial resolution, shows a promising skill in the monitoring of the smoke plume.

Retrieval of Aerosol Optical Properties Based on High Spectral Resolution Lidar

The detection of clouds and aerosols is important for climate research. Lidar has been widely used in atmospheric remote sensing research because of its high spatial and temporal resolution and ability to detect profiles. High spectral resolution lidar (HSRL) accurately calculates the optical properties of aerosols and clouds without relying on any assumptions. Based on the 532nm iodine HSRL system, the lidar ratio of the urban aerosol in Hangzhou is 40-50sr, and the average lidar ratio of the cirrus is 24.79sr, demonstrating that the HSRL system and retrieval algorithms accurately obtain the optical properties of clouds and aerosols.

Vertical distribution of smoke aerosols over upper Indo-Gangetic Plain

Attenuated backscatter profiles retrieved by the space borne active lidar CALIOP on-board CALIPSO satellite were used to measure the vertical distribution of smoke aerosols and to compare it against the ECMWF planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) over the smoke dominated region of Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP), South Asia. Initially, the relative abundance of smoke aerosols was investigated considering multiple satellite retrieved aerosol optical properties. Only the upper IGP was selectively considered for CALIPSO retrieval based on prevalence of smoke aerosols. Smoke extinction was found to contribute 2–50% of the total aerosol extinction, with strong seasonal and altitudinal attributes. During winter (DJF), smoke aerosols contribute almost 50% of total aerosol extinction only near to the surface while in post-monsoon (ON) and monsoon (JJAS), relative contribution of smoke aerosols to total extinction was highest at about 8 km height. There was strong diurnal variation in smoke extinction, evident throughout the year, with frequent abundance of smoke particles at lower height (<4 km) during daytime compared to higher height during night (>4 km). Smoke injection height also varied considerably during rice (ON: 0.71 ± 0.65 km) and wheat (AM: 2.34 ± 1.34 km) residue burning period having a significant positive correlation with prevailing PBLH. Partitioning smoke AOD against PBLH into the free troposphere (FT) and boundary layer (BL) yield interesting results. BL contribute 36% (16%) of smoke AOD during daytime (nighttime) and the BL-FT distinction increased particularly at night. There was evidence that despite travelling efficiently to FT, major proportion of smoke AOD (50–80%) continue to remain close to the surface (<3 km) thereby, may have greater implications on regional climate, air quality, smoke transport and AOD-particulate modelling.
