Abstract The purpose of this study is to explore how the implementation of Responsible Supply Chain Management (RSCM) of SMEs as buyers in the international markets differs from the approach of MNCs. The study is based on a cross-sectional qualitative case-study research of ten German companies. We find compelling evidence to identify important size-related differences in key dimensions like competitive pressure, compliance, company ethos and personal motivation. Based on these findings a genuine company typology approach to RSCM is designed. Our research has significant implications as it compares strategic approaches and highlights through which practitioners from companies of different sizes apply to implementing RSCM.
