Degradation Polysaccharides from Benincasa hispida var. chieh-qua How: Unveiling Bioactive Properties of Degraded Compounds.

This study reported an effective method for the degradation of Chieh-qua (Benincasa hispida var. Chieh-qua How) polysaccharides (BHCP) by a hydrogen peroxide-ascorbic acid oxidation (H2O2-VC) system. The degradation conditions were optimized using a Box-Behnken response surface design as concentration of H2O2-VC 19.5 mM, degradation temperature 46.4 °C and degradation time 1.0 h. The average molecular weight was decreased and total sugar content was raised of the degraded polysaccharide (DBHCP). Two refined degraded polysaccharides (DBHCP-1, DBHCP-2) were purified and prepared, and their structures were analyzed by chemical and spectral analysis. The in vitro experiments showed that degraded polysaccharides (DBHCP and DBHCP-1) have better antioxidant and anti-tyrosinase activity than natural polysaccharide BHCP. These findings support the potential application of Chieh-qua polysaccharides in the food and medical industries.

Development of puerarin-loaded poly(lactic acid) microspheres for sustained ocular delivery: In vitro/vivo evaluation

Diabetic retinopathy, an ocular complication of diabetes, is an important cause of blindness in adults. Puerarin is considered to have promising potential for clinical use in treating diabetic retinopathy. In this study, we designed a novel puerarin-loaded poly(lactic acid) sustained-release microspheres suitable for ocular administration, and we assessed itsin vitro and in vivo properties. The preparation of puerarin-loaded microspheres was optimized by Box-Behnken response surface design. The encapsulation efficiency and drug loading of microspheres were 35.71% and 3.85%, respectively. The microspheres exhibited good dispersion and high safety, making it suitable for ocular drug delivery. In vitro release demonstrated that microspheres had a well-sustained release effectiveness, and its release behavior complied with the zero-order kinetic characteristics. The results of ocular tissue distribution revealed that the CmaxandAUC0-∞ of the microspheres group in the retina and choroid were considerably higher than those of the solution group and the intravenous injection group. This research revealed that intravitreal injection of microspheres can significantly prolong the half-life of puerarin in eye tissues and achieve sustained drug release. Therefore, intravitreal injection of microspheres has positive implications for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy.

Extraction, Characterization, and Antioxidant Activity of Eucommia ulmoides Polysaccharides.

Herein, the ultrasound-assisted extraction conditions affecting the yield of EUPS (Eucommia ulmoides polysaccharide) were analyzed using a Box-Behnken response surface design. The alleviation effect of EUPS on diquat-induced oxidative stress in mice was also studied. A maximum EUPS yield of 2.60% was obtained under the following optimized conditions: an extraction temperature of 63 °C, extraction time of 1 h, and ratio of liquid to raw materials of 22:1. EUPS exhibited strong 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging ability (87.05%), 2'-Azinobis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonate) (ABTS) radical-scavenging ability (101.17%), and hydroxyl radical-scavenging ability (62.92%). The administration of EUPS increased the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase and decreased malondialdehyde levels in the livers of mice exposed to diquat. EUPS may inhibit the downregulation of NAD(P)H:quinoneoxidoreductase 1 and heme oxygenase 1 mRNA expression in the livers of diquat-administered mice through the Nrf2-Keap1 signaling pathway. Moreover, the abundance of Firmicutes and Ligilactobacillus was enhanced, whereas that of Helicobacter decreased in the gut of the remaining groups of mice compared with that of the diquat-treated mice. Therefore, EUPS exhibited an antioxidant effect and improved oxidative stress and intestinal flora abundance in mice.

Valorisation of sodium lignosulfonate from wood pulping industries for the enhancement of moisture management properties of nylon fabric

Nylon fabric has poor moisture management properties due to the absence of hydroxyl groups. In this work, an attempt has been made to enhance the moisture management properties of nylon fabric using sodium lignosulfonate (SLS). SLS is an essential by-product of the wood pulping industry. Various concentrations of the SLS were prepared in an aqueous medium, and the nylon fabric was treated with them using the exhaust method. The effects of the parameters of the treatment process are analyzed using Box–Behnken response surface design of experiment and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Upon testing the water vapour transmittance rate (WVTR), it was found that the SLS treatment is efficacious in improving moisture management. Water contact angle is reduced to 10.6° from 105.3° after the coating, which proves the achievement of hydrophilic surface. The average wetting time of nylon fabrics decreased by 78% after the SLS treatment. A significant increase in the bending modulus, flexural rigidity, and coefficient of the SLS-treated fabrics is observed when SLS concentration is high. After the SLS treatment, wetting time decreases, absorption rate increases, spreading speed increases, and overall moisture management capacity (OMMC) increases significantly. The SLS coating over the nylon surface is found to be durable with excellent rating for light and washing fastness.

Efficient mercury ion abatement through highly porous cellulose nanofibrils combined with microporous organic polymer enhancements

Pristine microporous organic polymer (p-MOP), owing to the presence of heteroatoms, has emerged as a significant platform for sensing and adsorption of heavy metal ions. The present work is a novel approach for developing highly porous hybrid architectures with trimesic acid and phenylene diamine-based p-MOP embedded over rice straw-derived cellulose nanofibers (ACNFs/MOP) for the sensing and remediation of mercury ions in the aqueous medium. The ACNFs/MOP were successfully characterized by various techniques, such as FTIR spectroscopy, BET surface area analysis, X-ray diffraction, XPS, HR-TEM, and TGA. The hybrid exhibited excellent porosity and crystallinity. The ACNFs/MOP hybrid was highly selective for Hg(II) ions, displaying substantial enhancement in fluorescence intensity with an LOD of 3.927 nM while also facilitating simultaneous adsorption. The adsorption showed a strong fit with pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models with an excellent adsorption capacity of 416.18 mg g−1, attributed to electrostatic interactions, coordination surface complexation, and metal-π interactions, as confirmed by XPS studies. Thermodynamic studies indicated an endothermic adsorption process. Box-Behnken Design-Response Surface methodology with Design Expert Software-13 was applied to model the process parameters. The hybrids were 97 % efficient even after five cycles of reusability, exhibiting their excellent potential for removing perilous Hg(II) ions from wastewater.

Ultrasonic-Assisted Water-Rich Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents for Sustainable Polyphenol Extraction from Seaweed: A Case Study on Cultivated Saccharina latissima.

This case study introduces a green, 1 h single-step method using water-rich natural deep eutectic solvent (WRNADES) for ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of polyphenols fromSaccharina latissima, a commercially cultivated brown seaweed. The extraction efficiency was evaluated using a selective quantitative NMR method (s-qNMR) and the traditional nonselective colorimetric total phenolic content assay (TPC). Initial 6 h extractions in traditional solvents (methanol, ethanol, acetone, and ethyl acetate) showed a 40-60% increase in polyphenolic yields in 50% aqueous solutions measured by the TPC method. Six different water-rich (50%) NADES (WRNADES) combinations were tested (choline chloride/betaine with lactic acid, citric acid, and 1,3-butanediol), with betaine and 1,3-butanediol (1:1) proving most effective. Parameters for the WRNADES were optimized using Box-Behnken design response surface methodology, resulting in a 1:20 w/w biomass to solvent ratio and a 1 h extraction time at 50 °C. The WRNADES extraction process was refined into a scalable, single-step procedure and compared with traditional solvent extractions (6 h, 50% aqueous methanol and acetone). A final XAD-7 polyphenol recovery step was included in all extractions. The optimized WRNADES extraction yielded 15.97 mg GAE/g of the dry weight recovered polyphenolic extract (s-qNMR), exceeding the 6 h 50% aqueous methanol (12.4 mg GAE/g) and acetone (11.4 mg GAE/g) extractions. Thus, the UAE-WRNADES method presented in this case study provides a cost-effective, sustainable, and eco-friendly alternative for the extraction of phenolic compounds from seaweed. It promotes the development of environmentally friendly production processes within the seaweed biorefinery.

Optimization and characterization of GGBFS-FA based alkali-activated CLSM containing Shield-discharged soil using Box-Behnken response surface design method

With the rapid growth of shield-discharged soil (SDS), there is an increasing demand for effective recycling and transformation methods. This study aims to develop an alkali-activated controlled low-strength material (CLSM) by utilizing ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and fly ash (FA) as precursors, SDS as fine aggregate, and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution as an activator. The Box-Behnken design (BBD) within the response surface methodology (RSM) framework was employed, considering liquid-to-solid ratio, alkali equivalent, aggregate-to-binder ratio, and foam agent content (FC) in SDS as key factors. Regression models were constructed to analyze the effects of these factors on flowability, bleeding rate, setting time, compressive strength, elastic modulus, and water absorption. The results confirmed the effectiveness of RSM in determining optimal conditions for material performance. In addition, microscopic analyses were conducted to explore hydration products, microstructural characteristics, and pore distribution. The findings revealed that the fresh density of the CLSM ranged from 1460 to 1740 kg/m³, classifying it as a low-density material. The 28-day compressive strength varied from 1.837 to 7.884 MPa, while the setting time ranged between 1.2 and 5.6 hours. These properties comply with the ACI 229 standard and are suitable for practical applications. Interestingly, when the aggregate-to-binder (A/B) ratio was between 0.2 and 0.4, increasing the ratio did not lead to a consistent reduction in mechanical properties. Instead, the properties initially decreased and then improved. Moreover, an increase in foam agent content (FC) extended the setting time and reduced mechanical strength. The correlation coefficients of all models exceeded 0.98, with a coefficient of variation below 10 % and a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 4, demonstrating strong reliability and accuracy of the models. Additionally, the average relative error between predicted and experimental values in six scenarios was under 6 %, validating the feasibility of optimizing the design of alkali-activated CLSM using RSM. The formation of Ca(OH)₂ crystals facilitates early strength development, resulting in final cementitious materials reticular, fibrous C-S-H, C-A-H, and other gel-like hydration products. Calcium promotes the formation of gels such as C-S-H, shortening the setting time and enhancing microstructural density. This study provides valuable insights for optimizing the design of alkali-activated CLSM containing SDS, thereby expanding methods for utilizing construction and demolition waste.

Prediction and optimization of wet bulb efficiency in solar energy-based novel evaporative cooling system: Response Surface Method Approach

Abstract The wet bulb efficiency is an essential parameter in performance of Indirect evaporative cooling systems, as it impacts efficiently cool air while minimizing energy usage. This paper focuses on model and optimize multi tubular type wet channel for indirect evaporative cooler system. The optimized wet bulb efficiency based on Box-Behnken experimental design model and response surface method. The methodology included predicting and optimizing input process and working flow parameters of indirect evaporative cooling system to maximize wet bulb efficiency. A quadratic model of response surface method was used to evaluate influence of each factor on wet bulb efficiency, which was validated through analysis of variance results. The study found a maximum WBE of 89.65% under specific conditions, with a relative error of 3.25% between predicted and experimental result. This optimization process, governed by RSM, determined essential parameters for enhancing efficiency of system. These parameters include inlet process temperature of 28°C, working air velocity of 3.5 m/s, relative humidity of 45%, and inlet working air temperature of 24°C. These results demonstrate practical significance of current research, providing useful insights for optimal design and optimization of indirect evaporative cooling systems to fulfil cooling requirements while minimising energy consumption.

Preparation, Structural Analysis, and Growth-Promoting Effects of Amomum longiligulare Polysaccharide 1-Mg (II) Complex.

In this study, Amomum longiligulare polysaccharide 1 (ALP1) is used to chelate with magnesium (Mg) to synthesize the ALP1-Mg (II) complex (ALP1-Mg). Based on Box-Behnken response surface design, the optimum technological conditions are 22mgmL-1 trisodium citrate, 2.10molL-1 MgCl2, reaction at 70 °C for 2.9h, resulting in a maximum Mg content of 2.13%. Next, the physicochemical properties and structural characteristics of ALP1 and ALP1-Mg are characterized, and the results show that the morphology, conformation, crystallinity, and thermal stability of ALP1-Mg are changed. In addition, dietary supplementation of 500mgkg-1 ALP1-Mg significantly reduces the feed conversion ratio during the grower (15-35 d). Meanwhile, the villus height/crypt depth of the duodenum and ileum are significantly increased, and the relative abundance of Lactobacillus is significantly elevated. Taken together, the results suggest that ALP1-Mg is a potential growth-promoting feed additive.

Sustainable Biodiesel Production via Biogenic Catalyzed Transesterification of Baobab Oil Methyl Ester and Optimization Process

Biomass diesel is one of the sustainable and renewable sources of energy envisaged to hold a prominent position in the world energy infrastructure. In this study, biodiesel was production from baobab seed oil by transesterification using biogenic heterogeneous catalyst, derived from mixed wastes of white chicken eggshells and banana fruit peels. The production process was analyzed and statistically analyzed using Box-Behnken Design-Response Surface Methodology (BBD-RSM). The influential transesterification reaction parameters investigated with their ranges include reaction time (40–80 min), molar ratio of oil to methanol (1:9–1:15) and catalyst weight (3–5 wt%). The nano-catalyst (CaO-BFP-850 NPs) was prepared by calcination at high temperature of 850 °C for 4 h, and its properties were found to contain majorly the basic elements of Ca and K when investigated with analytical instruments such as SEM, EDS, DSC-TGA, FT-IR, and XRD. The regeneration test of the CaO-BFP-850 NPs conducted showed it could be reused for more than four cycles with less catalytic efficiency reduction. The ideal conditions instituted by BBD-RSM was 75 min of reaction time, 12.8:1 molar ratio of oil to methanol, and 4.08 wt% CaO-BFP-850 at 65 °C and 650 rpm constant temperature and agitation speed respectively, with the validated biodiesel yield of 96.70 wt%. The assessment of the quality of the biodiesel produced showed compliance with the standard specifications of ASTM D6751, EN 14241, and SANS 833.

Optimizing Coreopsis tinctoria Flower Extraction and Inhibiting CML Activity: Box-Behnken Design.

Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is an uncommon type of cancer of the bone marrow associated with high mortality. Although several effective therapies have been developed to reduce symptoms in patients with CML, many of these methods are associated with side effects. Coreopsis tinctoria Nutt. (C. tinctoria) is a natural medicinal material that possesses antioxidant and anticancer activities. Yet, its effect in treating leukemia has still not been fully explored. To optimize the C. tinctoria flower extraction process and investigate whether these extracts can impair CML cell survival. The extraction process of C. tinctoria was optimized by the Box-Behnken design response surface method. K562 cells were treated with different volumes (0, 10, 25, 50, and 100 μL) of C. tinctoria flower extracts. The effect of C. tinctoria extract on cell morphology and cell apoptosis was assessed by light microscopy, laser confocal microscopy, and flow cytometry. We established the following optimized C. tinctoria flower extraction conditions: temperature of 84.4°C, extraction period of 10 mins, solid-liquid ratio of 1:65, and times 4. These conditions were applied for C. tinctoria flower extraction. Pre-incubation of extracts prepared under the aforementioned optimal conditions with K562 cells induced cell cytotoxicity and cell apoptosis. C. tinctoria flower extracts exert obvious anti-leukemia effects in vitro and may be a potential drug candidate for leukemia treatment.

Preparation of Aprepitant nanoparticles using subcritical water anti-solvent technology

The low oral bioavailability of active pharmaceutical ingredients in aqueous media causes to partial absorption through the gastrointestinal tract. Increasing surface area by particle size reduction has been accomplished to overcome these challenges. In this study, Aprepitant (APT) nanoparticles were prepared using a green solvent anti-solvent precipitation method based on subcritical water (SW) technology. Effects of three different parameters such as SW temperature (368.15–388.15 K), anti-solvent temperature (273.15–293.15 K), and polyethylene glycol concentration (0.02–0.04 wt%) were studied on the size and morphology of the produced nanoparticles. As the next step, optimization of the process was performed using the response surface Box-Behnken design (BBD), and optimum operational conditions were obtained as follows: SW temperature (388.15 K), anti-solvent temperature (283.15 K), and polyethylene glycol concentration (0.04 wt%). The results revealed a significant decline in the size of the precipitated particle by subcritical water-based technologies (5.0 nm, on average), as compared to the unprocessed drug particles (30 μm, on average). Green SW-based technologies are proposed for the preparation of APT nanoparticles with no requirement for organic solvents and post-processing purification stages.

Efficient removal of Eosin Yellow dye using solvothermal synthesised Ni/Al layered double hydroxide and layered double oxide: insights into adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics

ABSTRACT The accumulation of organic pollutants in the environment is swelling steadily and raising the alarm for their redressal. Layered double hydroxides (LDH) and layered double oxides (LDO) are gaining prominence for their potential to address this challenge. This work includes an eco-friendly facile solvothermal synthesis of Ni/Al LDH and their calcination to Ni/Al LDO. The prepared nanomaterials were characterised by XRD, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, FT-IR, BET and TGA techniques, which confirm the highly porous structure of synthesised nanomaterials with a high specific area of 109.94 m2g−1 and 188.94 m2g−1 for Ni/Al LDH and Ni/Al LDO, respectively. A systematic study was conducted to explore the adsorptive potential of these materials towards the removal of organic dye Eosin Yellow (EY). The adsorptive efficiency was found to be 95% and 99% for Ni/Al LDH and Ni/Al LDO, respectively, under the optimised conditions of pH, adsorbent dose, contact time, dye concentration and temperature on adsorptive removal of EY dye, which was analysed by BBD-RSM (Box-Behnken Design Response surface methodology). The adsorption data fits best with the Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetics. The thermodynamic study confirms the exothermic adsorptive process. The durability and reusability of the synthesised adsorbents were ascertained by their retention of the adsorptive efficiency even after five adsorption-desorption cycles which were as high as 91% and 85% for Ni/Al LDH and Ni/Al LDO, respectively. The mechanism of adsorption involves electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding between the surface of adsorbent and adsorbate as well as intercalation of dye molecules.

Optimization of Microbial Fuel Cell Operational Parameters for the Treatment of Brewery Sludge

AbstractThis study investigates the potential of a salt bridge‐mediated microbial fuel cell (MFC) for power generation and wastewater sludge treatment in breweries. Unlike traditional “one‐parameter‐at‐a‐time” methodologies, this study uses a three‐variable Box–Behnken design response surface methodology to optimize critical MFC operational parameters. The effects of parameters such as solution pH, salt bridge molarity, and temperature were studied in the range of 4 to 10, 1 to 5 M, and 20 to 45 g L−1. The optimum operating parameters were found to be solution pH of 5.853, salt bridge molarity of 3.343 M, and temperature of 32.5 °C for chemical oxygen demand and biological oxygen demand removal efficiencies of 92.485 % and 88.51 %, respectively. Temperature was found to be the most significant factor affecting the reactor's performance.

Electrospun O-quaternary ammonium chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol nanofibrous film by application of Box–Behnken design response surface method for eliminating pathogenic bacteria

In this study, O-quaternary ammonium chitosan (O-HTCC) containing bicationic antibacterial active groups was synthesized to develop an O-HTCC/PVA porous nanofibrous film to enhance antibacterial activity, leveraging surface modification and nano-porous structure design. Uniform and smooth nanofibrous structures (average diameter: 72–294 nm) were successfully obtained using a simple and feasible electrospinning method. A response surface model via Box-Behnken design (BBD) was used to clarify the interaction relationship between O-HTCC fiber diameter and three critical electrospinning parameters (O-HTCC concentration, applied voltage, feed flow rate), predicting that the minimum O-HTCC fiber diameter (174 nm) could be achieved with 7 wt% of O-HTCC concentration, 14 kV of voltage, and 0.11 mL/h of feed flow rate. Linear regression (R2 = 0.9736, Radj2 = 0.9716) and the Anderson Darling test demonstrated the excellent fit of the RSM-BBD model. Compared to N-HTCC/PVA nanofibrous film, the O-HTCC/PVA version showed increased growth inhibition and more effective antibacterial efficacies against Escherichia coli (E. coli) (~;86.34 %) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) (~;99.99 %). DSC revealed improved thermal stability with an increased melting temperature (238 °C) and endothermic enthalpy (157.7 J/g). This study holds potential for further development of antibacterial packaging to extend food shelf-life to reduce bacterial infection.

Preparation and Effect of CO2 Response Gel for Plugging Low-Permeability Reservoirs.

In order to solve the problem of gas channeling during CO2 flooding in low-permeability reservoirs, a novel CO2 responsive gel channeling system was prepared by using carrageenan, branched polyethylene imide and ethylenediamine under laboratory conditions. Based on the Box-Behnken response surface design method, the optimal synthesis concentration of the system was 0.5 wt% carrageenan, 2.5 wt% branchized polyethylenimide and 6.5 wt% ethylenediamine. The micromorphology of the system before and after response was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The rheology and dehydration rate were tested under different conditions. The channeling performance and enhanced oil recovery effect of the gel system were simulated by a core displacement experiment. The experimental results show that the internal structure of the system changes from a disordered, smooth and loosely separated lamellae structure to a more uniform, complete and orderly three-dimensional network structure after exposure to CO2. The viscosity of the system was similar to aqueous solution before contact with CO2 and showed viscoelastic solid properties after contact with CO2. The experiment employing dehydration rates at different temperatures showed that the internal structure of the gel would change at a high temperature, but the gel system had a certain self-healing ability. The results of the displacement experiment show that the plugging rate of the gel system is stable at 85.32% after CO2 contact, and the recovery rate is increased by 17.06%, which provides an important guide for the development of low-permeability reservoirs.

Identifying Optimal Processing Variables and Investigating Mechanisms of Grain Alignment in Hot-Deformed NdFeB Magnets through Design of Experiments.

This study introduces a novel approach for investigating hot-deformed NdFeB magnets by combining the minimal stress deformation process (MSDP) with the design of experiment (DoE) methodology. This study focused on enhancing the crystallographic alignment, particularly the c-axis alignment of the Nd2Fe14B grains, to optimize the magnetic properties. By utilizing the Box-Behnken design matrix and response surface regression, critical processes and variables were identified, determining that a hot-pressing temperature of 700 °C is crucial for achieving optimal grain alignment. Changing the strain rate to 0.019 mm/s under a stress of 110 MPa led to significant enhancements in the alignment, yielding magnets with a remanence of approximately 13.4 kG and a coercivity of 21 kOe. These findings highlight the effectiveness of combining the MSDP and DoE for predicting and achieving improved magnetic properties. Despite the challenges associated with understanding the complexity of crystal alignment mechanisms, this integrated approach successfully improved magnetic characteristics. The methodology represents a significant advancement in the fabrication of high-performance hot-deformed NdFeB magnets, marking a notable contribution to the field.

Preparation and evaluation of microencapsulated delivery system of recombinant interferon alpha protein from rainbow trout

Diseases caused by viruses pose a significant risk to the health of aquatic animals, for which there are presently no efficacious remedies. Interferon (IFN) serving as an antiviral agent, is frequently employed in clinical settings. Due to the unique living conditions of aquatic animals, traditional injection of interferon is cumbersome, time-consuming and labor-intensive. This study aimed to prepare IFN microcapsules through emulsion technique by using resistant starch (RS) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS). Optimization was achieved using the Box-Behnken design (BBD) response surface technique, followed by the creation of microcapsules through emulsification. With RS at a concentration of 1.27 %, a water‑oxygen ratio of 3.3:7.4, CaCl2 at 13.67 %, CMCS at 1.04 %, the rate of encapsulation can escalate to 80.92 %. Rainbow trout infected with Infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) and common carp infected with Spring vireemia (SVCV) exhibited a relative survival rate (RPS) of 65 % and 60 % after treated with IFN microcapsules, respectively. Moreover, the microcapsules effectively reduced the serum AST levels and enhanced the expression of IFNα, IRF3, ISG15, MX1, PKR and Viperin in IHNV-infected rainbow trout and SVCV-infected carp. In conclusion, this integrated IFN microcapsule showed potential as an antiviral agent for treatment of viral diseases in aquaculture.

Two-response surface design optimization of carboxylated CNCs with super high thermal stability and dye removal capability

Discharging wastewater from industrial dyeing and printing processes poses a significant environmental threat, necessitating green and efficient adsorbents. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have emerged as a promising option for dye adsorbing. However, the industrial production and commercialization of CNCs still faced low yield, time-consuming, and uneco-friendly. In this study, we proposed a facile hydrochloric/maleic acid (HCl/C4H4O4) hydrolysis method to synthesize carboxylated CNCs using Box-Behnken design and dual response surface design, which can systematically investigate the effect of experimental factors (temperature, time and HCl/C4H4O volume ratio) on the final products. The rod-liked carboxylated CNCs gave the highest yield of 90.50 %, maximum carboxyl content of 1.29 mmol/g, and efficient dye removal ratio of 91.5 %. Furthermore, compared to CNCs obtained by commonly sulfuric acid hydrolysis way (CNCs-S) with a Tmax of 242.6 °C, the CNCs extracted at 5 h exhibited significantly improved thermal stability with Tmax reaching 351.2 °C. The enriched carboxyl content and excellent thermal stability show potential wastewater treatment applications under harsh conditions.
