Soil moisture alters the responses of alpine ecosystem productivity to environmental factors, especially VPD, on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Water availability, which can be represented by soil water content (SWC), plays a crucial role in plant growth and productivity across the cold and arid Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. However, the indirect effects of SWC are less well understood, and a more comprehensive understanding of its regulating effects may enhance the recognition of its importance, as this factor is pivotal for accurately predicting the future response of alpine ecosystems to climate change. In this study, in situ eddy covariance observation data from typical alpine ecosystems and satellite data covering the Qinghai-Tibetan region were used to comprehensively reveal the effects of SWC on ecosystem productivity. The results indicated that SWC played an important role in regulating the responses of gross primary productivity (GPP) to other environmental factors over both time and space, especially in terms of the responses of GPP to vapor pressure deficit (VPD). The regulating effect can be summarized as follows: there was a specific SWC value (SWC = 0.24 m3 m−3 on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau) above which SWC was no longer the primary limiting factor. The responses of GPP to certain environmental factors shifted from negative to positive when the SWC increased above this value. The responses of GPP to VPD exhibited the highest sensitivity to the regulating effects of SWC, with a general response pattern found across different temporal and spatial scales. The findings revealed divergent responses of GPP to environmental factors under different SWC conditions and between arid and humid regions, emphasizing the importance of soil water conditions. These findings suggest that water conditions should be given primary consideration in global change studies.

Nitrogen deposition differentially regulates the sensitivity of gross primary productivity to extreme drought versus wetness.

Global hydroclimatic variability is increasing with more frequent extreme dry and wet years, severely destabilizing terrestrial ecosystem productivity. However, what regulates the consequence of precipitation extremes on productivity remains unclear. Based on a 9-year field manipulation experiment on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, we found that the responses of gross primary productivity (GPP) to extreme drought and wetness were differentially regulated by nitrogen (N) deposition. Over increasing N deposition, extreme dry events reduced GPP more. Among the 12 biotic and abiotic factors examined, this was mostly explained by the increased plant canopy height and proportion of drought-sensitive species under N deposition, making photosynthesis more sensitive to hydraulic stress. While extreme wet events increased GPP, their effect did not shift over N deposition. These site observations were complemented by a global synthesis derived from the GOSIF GPP dataset, which showed that GPP sensitivity to extreme drought was larger in ecosystems with higher N deposition, but GPP sensitivity to extreme wetness did not change with N deposition. Our findings indicate that intensified hydroclimatic variability would lead to a greater loss of land carbon sinks in the context of increasing N deposition, due to that GPP losses during extreme dry years are more pronounced, yet without a synchronous increase in GPP gains during extreme wet years. The study implies that the conservation and management against climate extremes merit particular attention in ecosystems subject to N deposition.

Fast reduction of Atlantic SST threatens Europe-wide gross primary productivity under positive and negative CO2 emissions

Climate change mitigation through negative CO2 emissions has been recognized as a crucial strategy to combat global warming. However, its potential effects on terrestrial productivity and agricultural activities remain uncertain. In this study, we utilized large ensemble simulations with an Earth system model of full complexity to investigate the response of Gross Primary Production (GPP) to CO2 forcings. Our findings reveal a significant asymmetry in the GPP response to CO2 ramp-up and symmetric ramp-down model experiments, especially in Europe, suggesting that GPP declines rapidly as CO2 levels decrease. Remarkably, during the CO2 removal period, the North Atlantic Sea surface temperature experienced cooling due to a delayed recovery of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). This cooling led to precipitation and soil moisture deficits, resulting in a rapid reduction in GPP. This asymmetry in GPP response holds consistent across multi-model simulations. These results underscore the potential implications of delayed recovery in ocean circulation, which could unexpectedly accelerate terrestrial GPP reduction. These insights are crucial for policymakers, aiding them in projecting agricultural activity and formulating targeted GPP control policies specific to the European region.

Wildfire smoke reduces lake ecosystem metabolic rates unequally across a trophic gradient

Wildfire smoke covers entire continents, depositing aerosols and reducing solar radiation fluxes to millions of freshwater ecosystems, yet little is known about impacts on lakes. Here, we quantified trends in the spatial extent of smoke cover in California, USA, and assessed responses of gross primary production and ecosystem respiration to smoke in 10 lakes spanning a gradient in water clarity and nutrient concentrations. From 2006 − 2022, the maximum extent of medium or high-density smoke occurring between June-October increased by 300,000 km2. In the three smokiest years (2018, 2020, 2021), lakes experienced 23 − 45 medium or high-density smoke days, characterized by 20% lower shortwave radiation fluxes and five-fold higher atmospheric fine particulate matter concentrations. Ecosystem respiration generally declined during smoke cover, especially in low-nutrient, cold lakes, whereas responses of primary production were more variable. Lake attributes and seasonal timing of wildfires will mediate the effects of smoke on lakes.

Secondary production of the central rangeland region of the United States.

Rangelands are the dominant land use across a broad swath of central North America where they span a wide gradient, from <350 to >900 mm, in mean annual precipitation. Substantial efforts have examined temporal and spatial variation in aboveground net primary production (ANPP) to precipitation (PPT) across this gradient. In contrast, net secondary productivity (NSP, e.g., primary consumer production) has not been evaluated analogously. However, livestock production, which is a form of NSP or primary consumer production supported by primary production, is the dominant non-cultivated land use and an integral economic driver in these regions. Here, we used long-term (mean length = 19 years) ANPP and NSP data from six research sites across the Central Great Plains with a history of a conservative stocking to determine resource (i.e., PPT)-productivity relationships, NSP sensitivities to dry-year precipitation, and regional trophic efficiencies (e.g., NSP:ANPP ratio). PPT-ANPP relationships were linear for both temporal (site-based) and spatial (among site) gradients. The spatial PPT-NSP model revealed that PPT mediated a saturating relationship for NSP as sites became more mesic, a finding that contrasts with many plant-based PPT-ANPP relationships. A saturating response to high growing-season precipitation suggests biogeochemical rather than vegetation growth constraints may govern NSP (i.e., large herbivore production). Differential sensitivity in NSP to dry years demonstrated that the primary consumer production response heightened as sites became more xeric. Although sensitivity generally decreased with increasing precipitation as predicted from known PPT-ANPP relationships, evidence suggests that the dominant species' identity and traits influenced secondary production efficiency. Non-native northern mixed-grass prairie was outperformed by native Central Great Plains rangeland in sensitivity to dry years and efficiency in converting ANPP to NSP. A more comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms leading to differences in producer and consumer responses will require multisite experiments to assess biotic and abiotic determinants of multi-trophic level efficiency and sensitivity.

Global convergence in terrestrial gross primary production response to atmospheric vapor pressure deficit.

Atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (VPD) increases with climate warming and may limit plant growth. However, gross primary production (GPP) responses to VPD remain a mystery, offering a significant source of uncertainty in the estimation of global terrestrial ecosystems carbon dynamics. In this study, in-situ measurements, satellite-derived data, and Earth System Models (ESMs) simulations were analysed to show that the GPP of most ecosystems has a similar threshold in response to VPD: first increasing and then declining. When VPD exceeds these thresholds, atmospheric drought stress reduces soil moisture and stomatal conductance, thereby decreasing the productivity of terrestrial ecosystems. Current ESMs underscore CO2 fertilization effects but predict significant GPP decline in low-latitude ecosystems when VPD exceeds the thresholds. These results emphasize the impacts of climate warming on VPD and propose limitations to future ecosystems productivity caused by increased atmospheric water demand. Incorporating VPD, soil moisture, and canopy conductance interactions into ESMs enhances the prediction of terrestrial ecosystem responses to climate change.

Spatiotemporal variation and response of gross primary productivity to climate factors in forests in Qiannan state from 2000 to 2020

Accurate estimation of terrestrial gross primary productivity (GPP) is essential for quantifying the carbon exchange between the atmosphere and biosphere. Light use efficiency (LUE) models are widely used to estimate GPP at different spatial scales. However, difficulties in properly determining the maximum LUE (LUEmax) and downregulation of LUEmax into actual LUE result in uncertainties in the LUE-estimated GPP. The recently developed P model, a new LUE model, captures the adaptability of vegetation to the environment and simplifies parameterization. Site-level studies have proven the superior performance of the P model over LUE models. As a representative karst region with significant changes in forest cover in Southwest China, Qiannan is useful for exploring the spatiotemporal variation in forest GPP and its response to climate change for formulating forest management policies to address climate changes, e.g., global warming. Based on remote sensing and meteorological data, this study estimated the forest ecosystem GPP in Qiannan from 2000–2020 via the P model. This study explored the spatiotemporal changes in GPP in the study region over the past 20 years, used the Hurst index to predict future development trends from a time series perspective, and used partial correlation analysis to analyse the spatiotemporal GPP changes over the past 20 years in response to three factors: temperature, precipitation, and vapor pressure deficit (VPD). Our results showed that (1) the total amount of GPP and average GPP in Qiannan over the past 21 years (2000–2020) were 1.9 × 104 ± 2.0 × 103 MgC ha−1 year−1 and 1238.9 ± 107.9 gC m−2 year−1, respectively. The forest GPP generally increased at a rate of 6.1 gC m−2 year−1 from 2000 to 2020 in Qiannan, and this increase mainly occurred in the nongrowing season. (2) From 2000 to 2020, the forest GPP in Qiannan was higher in the southeast and lower in the northwest, indicating significant spatial heterogeneity. In the future, more than 70% of regional forest GPP will experience a weak increase in nonsustainability. (3) In Qiannan, forest GPP was positively correlated with both temperature and precipitation, with partial correlation coefficients of 0.10 and 0.11, respectively. However, the positive response of GPP to precipitation was approximately 70.47%, while that to temperature was 64.05%. Precipitation had a stronger restrictive effect on GPP than did temperature in this region, and GPP exhibited a negative correlation with VPD. The results showed that an increase in VPD inhibits GPP to some extent. Under rapid global change, the P model GPP provides new GPP data for global ecology studies, and the comparison of various stress factors allows for improvement of the GPP model in the future. The results of this study will aid in understanding the dynamic processes of terrestrial carbon. These findings are helpful for estimating and predicting the carbon budget of forest ecosystems in karst regions, clarifying the regional carbon absorption capacity, clarifying the main factors limiting vegetation growth in these regions, promoting sustainable regional forestry development and serving the “dual carbon goal.” This work has important guiding significance for policy formulation to mitigate climate change.

Nitrogen addition alleviates the adverse effects of drought on plant productivity in a temperate steppe.

Drought and nitrogen enrichment could profoundly affect the productivity of semiarid ecosystems. However, how ecosystem productivity will respond to different drought scenarios, especially with a concurrent increase in nitrogen availability, is still poorly understood. Using data from a 4-year field experiment conducted in a semiarid temperate steppe, we explored the responses of aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) to different drought scenarios and nitrogen addition, and the underlying mechanisms linking soil properties, plant species richness, functional diversity (community-weighted means of plant traits, functional dispersion) and phylogenetic diversity (net relatedness index) to ANPP. Our results showed that completely excluding precipitation in June (1-month intense drought) and reducing half the precipitation amount from June to August (season-long chronic drought) both significantly reduced ANPP, with the latter having a more negative impact on ANPP. However, reducing half of the precipitation frequency from June to August (precipitation redistribution) had no significant effect on ANPP. Nitrogen addition increased ANPP irrespective of drought scenarios. ANPP was primarily determined by soil moisture and nitrogen availability by regulating the community-weighted means of plant height, rather than other aspects of plant diversity. Our findings suggest that precipitation amount is more important than precipitation redistribution in influencing the productivity of temperate steppe, and nitrogen supply could alleviate the adverse impacts of drought on grassland productivity. Our study advances the mechanistic understanding of how the temperate grassland responds to drought stress, and implies that management strategies to protect tall species in the community would be beneficial for maintaining the productivity and carbon sequestration of grassland ecosystems under climate drought.

Effects of typhoons on primary production and dissolved oxygen in the East China Sea

Previous investigations confirm that typhoons deliver both dissolved oxygen and nutrient sources via promoting vertical/lateral exchanges between water masses. The former one replenishes oxygen for the bottom water and prevents persistent oxygen depletion, while the latter one facilitates primary production and subsequent subsurface oxygen consumption. However, it is left unknown if typhoons ultimately result in net gain or loss of dissolved oxygen during the passage. Tropical cyclone information, satellite observations, and numerical simulations were used to investigate the response of primary production and dissolved oxygen dynamics to typhoons. Results imply that both typhoon intensity, and distance between typhoon track and the Changjiang estuary control the magnitude of responses in primary production, air-sea oxygen flux, advection-induced oxygen variation, and oxygen consumption variation. The model-based oxygen budget analysis indicated that oxygen content increased after the passage of all typhoons occurred between 2011-2020. The findings in this study suggest that typhoons ultimately result in net gain of oxygen. The increased strength and frequency of typhoon in the warming future would play an important role in counteracting deoxygenation, which is likely to slow down the pace of deterioration of the seasonal hypoxia in this region.

Responses of gross primary productivity in different types of terrestrial ecosystems to interannual variation in the northern boundary of the East Asian summer monsoon

The northern boundary of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASMNB), located in the transitional zone from humid to arid regions, is characterized by significant north-south fluctuations. These fluctuations can exert profound impacts on the photosynthetic activity of vegetation by causing anomalous climate conditions, and thus play an important role in the carbon cycle over large parts of northern China. In general, a more northward position of the EASMNB generally leads to increasing precipitation and decreasing incoming solar radiation (ISR) over most of northern China. The increasing precipitation leads to positive GPP anomalies in the temperate grassland over the western part of northern China, where water scarcity issues cause the high reliance of vegetation photosynthesis on dry-wet variability. In contrast, the decreasing ISR favors the occurrence of negative signals in the forest ecosystems over the eastern part of northern China, which holds strong resilience and resistance to dry-wet variability but sensitivity to ISR-induced changes in the available energy. Under this circumstance, the GPP responses are characterized by a zonal dipole pattern over northern China, with positive and negative signals situated over the western and eastern parts, respectively. The reverse pattern is also true when the EASMNB adopts a more southward position. Our findings highlight the distinctive impacts of EASMNB fluctuations on GPP changes among different land-cover types. Considering that the EASMNB is expected to shift northward under global warming, our study thus can provide important implications for the study of regional carbon cycles in a warmer world.

Functioning of a canopy-dominated intertidal community during emersion: highly productive but heterotrophic at the annual scale

In order to address lack of data regarding coastal carbon budgets, we estimated the annual metabolic carbon budget of an intertidal rocky reef macroalgal community during emersion. This budget is based on direct in situ measurements during emersion and establishes the seasonal variations of the photosynthetic parameters of such a community. CO2 fluxes were measured hourly to study the response of community gross primary productivity (GPP) to irradiance and the variation of GPP and community respiration (CR) over the emersion period at different times of the year. These were combined together with existing monthly measures of GPP and CR hourly rates to model the variations of these fluxes as a function of irradiance and the tidal cycle throughout an entire calendar year. Daily, monthly and annual values of GPP, CR and net primary productivity (NPP) were calculated with a relatively low sensitivity to any of the parameters used. While GPP fluxes show comparable orders of magnitude to those measured in other systems, higher CR fluxes lead to a heterotrophic system during emersion, both under measured (NPP = −299 gC m−2 year−1) and theoretical irradiances (NPP = −119 gC m−2 year−1). This heterotrophy is directly linked to the light availability, varying according to combined daily, tidal and seasonal cycles, and to temperature at the seasonal scale. Measurements performed in situ at the community scale integrated interactions that are otherwise absent at the individual scale. This gives access to aspects of the functioning that cannot be otherwise identified.

Chronic drought decreased organic carbon content in topsoil greater than intense drought across grasslands in Northern China

Grasslands are expected to experience extreme climatic events such as extreme drought due to rising global temperatures. However, we still lack evidence of how extreme drought influence soil organic carbon (SOC) content in grassland ecosystems. We experimentally imposed extreme drought in two ways – chronic drought (66 % reduction in precipitation from May to August) and intense drought (100 % reduction in precipitation from June to July) to measure the effects of these two drought types on (SOC) content across six grassland sites that spanning desert steppe, typical steppe and meadow steppe in northern China. The experiment followed a randomized complete block design with six replicates of each treatment at each site. Our results showed that both chronic and intense drought decreased SOC content in the topsoil (0–10 cm) and the loss was higher in arid grasslands (desert steppe and typical steppe). Chronic drought decreased SOC content more than intense drought, with the effect again being strongest in arid grasslands. Furthermore, the response of SOC content to extreme drought was linked with the response of net primary productivity. Specifically, the response of SOC content was negatively correlated with drought sensitivity of above-ground net primary productivity (ANPP) but positively correlated with drought sensitivity of belowground NPP (BNPP). Overall, our results suggest that shifts in grassland SOC content with future drought will depend on the types of drought as well as the productivity responses and local climatic conditions such as precipitation, temperature, and aridity. The differential extreme drought impacts described here may facilitate predictions of climate change impacts on ecosystem carbon cycling.

Vegetation canopy structure mediates the response of gross primary production to environmental drivers across multiple temporal scales

Gross primary production (GPP) is a critical component of the global carbon cycle and plays a significant role in the terrestrial carbon budget. The impact of environmental factors on GPP can occur through both direct (by influencing photosynthetic efficiency) and indirect (through the modulation of vegetation structure) pathways, but the extent to which these mechanisms contribute has been seldom quantified. In this study, we used structural equation modeling and observations from the FLUXNET network to investigate the direct and indirect effects of environmental factors on terrestrial ecosystem GPP at multiple temporal scales. We found that canopy structure, represented by leaf area index (LAI), is a crucial intermediate factor in the GPP response to environmental drivers. Environmental factors affect GPP indirectly by altering canopy structure, and the relative proportion of indirect effects decreased with increasing LAI. The study also identified different effects of environmental factors on GPP across time scales. At the half-hourly time scale, radiation was the primary driver of GPP. In contrast, the influences of temperature and vapor pressure deficit took on greater prominence at longer time scales. About half of the total effect of temperature on GPP was indirect through the regulation of canopy structure, and the indirect effect increased with increasing time scale (GPPNT-based models: 0.135 (half-hourly) vs. 0.171 (daily) vs. 0.189 (weekly) vs. 0.217 (monthly); GPPDT-based models: 0.139 vs. 0.170 vs. 0.187 vs. 0.215; all values were reported in gC m−2 d−1 °C−1, P < 0.001); while the indirect effect of radiation on GPP was comparatively lower, accounting for less than a quarter of the total effect. Furthermore, we observed a direct, negative-to-positive impact of precipitation on GPP across timescales. These findings provide crucial information on the interplay between environmental factors and LAI on GPP and enable a deeper understanding of the driving mechanisms of GPP.

Seasonal particulate organic carbon dynamics of the Kolyma River tributaries, Siberia

Abstract. Arctic warming is causing permafrost thaw and release of organic carbon (OC) to fluvial systems. Permafrost-derived OC can be transported downstream and degraded into greenhouse gases that may enhance climate warming. Susceptibility of OC to decomposition depends largely upon its source and composition, which vary throughout the seasonally distinct hydrograph. Most studies on carbon dynamics to date have focused on larger Arctic rivers, yet little is known about carbon cycling in lower-order rivers and streams. Here, we characterize the composition and sources of OC, focusing on less studied particulate OC (POC), in smaller waterways within the Kolyma River watershed. Additionally, we examine how watershed characteristics control carbon concentrations. In lower-order systems, we find rapid initiation of primary production in response to warm water temperatures during spring freshet, shown by decreasing δ13C-POC, in contrast to larger rivers. This results in CO2 uptake by primary producers and microbial degradation of mainly autochthonous OC. However, if terrestrially derived inorganic carbon is assimilated by primary producers, part of it is returned via CO2 emissions if the autochthonous OC pool is simultaneously degraded. As Arctic warming and hydrologic changes may increase OC transfer from smaller waterways to larger river networks, understanding carbon dynamics in smaller waterways is crucial.

The Difference between the Responses of Gross Primary Production and Sun-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence to the Environment Based on Tower-Based and TROPOMI SIF Data

The strong correlation between gross primary production (GPP) and sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) has been reported in many studies and is the basis of the SIF-based GPP estimation. However, GPP and SIF are not fully synchronous under various environmental conditions, which may destroy a stable GPP–SIF relationship. Therefore, exploring the difference between responses of GPP and SIF to the environment is essential to correctly understand the GPP–SIF relationship. As the common driver of GPP and SIF, the incident radiation could cause GPP and SIF to have similar responses to the environment, which may obscure the discrepancies in the responses of GPP and SIF to the other environmental variables, and further result in the ambiguity of the GPP–SIF relationship and uncertainties in the application of SIF. Therefore, we tried to exclude the dominant role of radiation in the responses of GPP and SIF to the environment based on the binning method, in which continuous tower-based SIF, satellite SIF, and eddy covariance GPP data from two growing seasons were used to investigate the differences in the responses of GPP and SIF to radiation, air temperature (Ta), and evaporation fraction (EF). We found that the following: (1) At both the site and satellite scales, there were divergences in the light response speeds between GPP and SIF which were affected by Ta and EF. (2) SIF and its light response curves were insensitive to EF and Ta compared to GPP, and the consistency in GPP and SIF light responses was gradually improved with the improvement of Ta and EF. (3) The dynamic slope values of the GPP–SIF relationship were mostly caused by the different sensitivities of GPP and SIF to EF and Ta. Our results highlighted that GPP and SIF were not highly consistent, having differences in environmental responses that further confused the GPP–SIF relationship, leading to complex SIF application.

Vegetation net primary productivity in urban areas of China responded positively to the COVID-19 lockdown in spring 2020

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, China implemented large-scale lockdown measures in early 2020, resulting in a marked reduction in human activities over a short period. Studies have explored environmental changes during lockdowns, lacking analysis of response of net primary productivity (NPP) to lockdowns, especially for diverse vegetation types. Correlation between NPP and impact factors during lockdowns remains unclear. Through Google Earth Engine, we evaluated spatial-temporal changes in spring NPP at multiple scales during lockdown period (LD, 2020) compared with unlocked period (UL, 2017–2019) by remote sensing data in urban areas of China. Changes in four impact factors, aerosol optical depth (AOD) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) (via remote sensing data), alongside temperature (TEM) and precipitation (PRE) (via meteorological data) were explored. Additionally, geodetector, a valuable statistical tool for detecting the driving ability of various elements, was employed to explore the underlying causes of vegetation changes during LD. In the spring of LD: 1) National urban NPP generally increased (+6.50 %), notably in Northeast China (NE), North China (N) and East China (E). Besides, overall urban AOD decreased (−3.64 %), notably in N and Central China (C). National urban PAR increased (+2.7 %), particularly in C and Northwest China (NW). However, overall urban TEM (−0.06 %) and PRE (−1.21 %) changed negatively. 2) NPP in all three vegetation types in urban areas enhanced, with change rates: croplands > forests > grasslands. Evident enhancements occurred in the forests and croplands in N, and the grasslands in NE. 3) Through geodetector, during LD, AOD (q = 0.223) and TEM (q = 0.272) emerged as the dominant factors for NPP. Compared with UL, the explanatory power of AOD and PAR on NPP increased during LD. This study provides valuable insights into understanding the effects of short-term human activities on vegetation productivity, offering reference for the formulation of ecological and environmental policies.

Nitrogen addition regulates the effects of variation in precipitation patterns on plant biomass formation and allocation in a Leymus chinensis grassland of northeast China.

Global warming is predicted to change precipitation amount and reduce precipitation frequency, which may alter grassland primary productivity and biomass allocation, especially when interact with other global change factors, such as nitrogen deposition. The interactive effects of changes in precipitation amount and nitrogen addition on productivity and biomass allocation are extensively studied; however, how these effects may be regulated by the predicted reduction in precipitation frequency remain largely unknown. Using a mesocosm experiment, we investigated responses of primary productivity and biomass allocation to the manipulated changes in precipitation amount (PA: 150mm, 300mm, 450mm), precipitation frequency (PF: medium and low), and nitrogen addition (NA: 0 and 10 g N m-2 yr-1) in a Leymus chinensis grassland. We detected significant effects of the PA, PF and NA treatments on both aboveground biomass (AGB) and belowground biomass (BGB); but the interactive effects were only significant between the PA and NA on AGB. Both AGB and BGB increased with an increment in precipitation amount and nitrogen addition; the reduction in PF decreased AGB, but increased BGB. The reduced PF treatment induced an enhancement in the variation of soil moisture, which subsequently affected photosynthesis and biomass formation. Overall, there were mismatches in the above- and belowground biomass responses to changes in precipitation regime. Our results suggest the predicted changes in precipitation regime, including precipitation amount and frequency, is likely to alter primary productivity and biomass allocation, especially when interact with nitrogen deposition. Therefore, predicting the influence of global changes on grassland structure and functions requires the consideration of interactions among multiple global change factors.

Nutricline adjustment by internal tidal beam generation enhances primary production in idealized numerical models

When the barotropic tide encounters variable bathymetry, fluctuating flow along a topographic slope generates baroclinic tides, or internal tides. There is growing evidence that these internal tides can affect primary production in the euphotic zone, though the dominant mechanisms are unclear. Internal tides move passive phytoplankton through an exponentially varying light field, enhancing primary production near the base of the euphotic zone. In addition internal tides also increase primary production through vertical nutrient advection into the euphotic zone. Topographically generated internal tides can be separated into two regimes: 1) the often highly nonlinear near-field regime where tidal beams are observed and 2) the more linear far-field regime. This study examines the primary production response to these internal tide processes using the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) coupled to a simple Nutrient, Phytoplankton, Zooplankton, Detritus (NPZD) model configured for an oligotrophic system with the nutricline positioned below 50 m depth. These idealized simulations generate internal tide beams with an oscillating, horizontal body force at the M2 tidal frequency that is applied to domains with a bathymetric step and uniform stratification. Sensitivity of the primary production response to the energy content of the tidal beam is obtained by adjusting the height and slope of the bathymetric step. Simulation results reveal that primary production intensifies along tidal beams due to the local enhancement of parcel vertical displacement (light effect) and nutrient advective flux divergence (nutrient effect). In the near-field regime across the range of step heights and slopes in this study, the nutrient effect is an order of magnitude larger and explains 92% of the variance in primary production versus only 14% for the light effect. The geometry of the generating feature sets the kinematics of the tidal beam. The light effect is limited in the euphotic zone across our domains because realized changes in light experienced over a tidal cycle are small relative to the amount of light available at a particular depth. In contrast, the magnitude of the nutrient effect increases more substantially with tidal beam energy.

Investigating the long-term response of plateau vegetation productivity to extreme climate: insights from a case study in Qinghai Province, China.

Over the past three decades, there has been a significant global climate change characterized by an increase in the intensity and frequency of extreme climate events. The vegetation status in Qinghai Province has undergone substantial changes, which are more pronounced than other regions in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. However, a clear understanding of the response characteristics of plateau vegetation to extreme climate events is currently lacking. In this study, we investigated the response of net primary productivity (NPP) to different forms of extreme climate events across regions characterized by varying levels of aridity and elevation gradients. Specifically, we observed a significant increase in NPP in relatively arid regions. Our findings indicate that, in relatively arid regions, single episodes of high-intensity precipitation have a pronounced positive effect (higher correlation) on NPP. Furthermore, in high-elevation regions (4000-6000m), both the intensity and frequency of precipitation events are crucial factors for the increase in regional NPP. However, continuous precipitation can have significant negative impacts on certain areas within relatively wet regions. Regarding temperature, a reduction in the number of frost days within a year has been shown to lead to a significant increase in NPP in arid regions. This reduction allows vegetation growth rate to increase in regions where it was limited by low temperatures. Vegetation conditions in drought-poor regions are expected to continue to improve as extreme precipitation intensifies and extreme low-temperature events decrease.
