Measuring leaf and root functional traits uncovers multidimensionality of plant responses to arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi.

While many studies have measured the aboveground responses of plants to mycorrhizal fungi at a single time point, little is known about how plants respond belowground or across time to mycorrhizal symbiosis. By measuring belowground responses and growth over time in many plant species, we create a more complete picture of how mycorrhizal fungi benefit their hosts. We grew 26 prairie plant species with and without mycorrhizal fungi and measured 14 functional traits to assess above- and belowground tissue quality and quantity responses and changes in resource allocation. We used function-valued trait (FVT) modeling to characterize changes in species growth rate when colonized. While aboveground biomass responses were positive, the response of traits belowground were much more variable. Changes in aboveground biomass accounted for 60.8% of the variation in mycorrhizal responses, supporting the use of aboveground biomass response as the primary response trait. Responses belowground were not associated with aboveground responses and accounted for 18.3% of the variation. Growth responses over time were highly variable across species. Interestingly, none of the measured responses were phylogenetically conserved. Mycorrhizal fungi increase plant growth in most scenarios, but the effects of these fungi belowground and across time are more complicated. This study highlights how differences in plant allocation priorities might affect how they utilize the benefits from mycorrhizal fungi. Identifying and characterizing these differences is a key step to understanding the effects of mycorrhizal mutualisms on whole plant physiology.

A global meta-analysis on the effects of organic and inorganic fertilization on grasslands and croplands.

A central role for nature-based solution is to identify optimal management practices to address environmental challenges, including carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation. Inorganic fertilization increases plant aboveground biomass but often causes a tradeoff with plant diversity loss. It remains unclear, however, whether organic fertilization, as a potential nature-based solution, could alter this tradeoff by increasing aboveground biomass without plant diversity loss. Here we compile data from 537 experiments on organic and inorganic fertilization across grasslands and croplands worldwide to evaluate the responses of aboveground biomass, plant diversity, and soil organic carbon (SOC). Both organic and inorganic fertilization increase aboveground biomass by 56% and 42% relative to ambient, respectively. However, only inorganic fertilization decreases plant diversity, while organic fertilization increases plant diversity in grasslands with greater soil water content. Moreover, organic fertilization increases SOC in grasslands by 19% and 15% relative to ambient and inorganic fertilization, respectively. The positive effect of organic fertilization on SOC increases with increasing mean annual temperature in grasslands, a pattern not observed in croplands. Collectively, our findings highlight organic fertilization as a potential nature-based solution that can increase two ecosystem services of grasslands, forage production, and soil carbon storage, without a tradeoff in plant diversity loss.

Optimizing grazing exclusion duration for carbon sequestration in grasslands: Incorporating temporal heterogeneity of aboveground biomass and soil organic carbon

Grasslands account for approximately one-third of the global terrestrial carbon stocks. However, a limited understanding of the impact of grazing exclusion on carbon storage in grassland ecosystems hinders progress towards restoring overgrazed grasslands and promoting carbon sequestration. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis to investigate the effects of grazing exclusion on aboveground biomass (AGB) and soil organic carbon (SOC) in four grasslands: alpine grasslands (AP), tropical savannas (TS), temperate subhumid grasslands (TG), and a semi-desert steppe (SD). Our meta-analysis indicated that grazing exclusion significantly enhanced carbon sequestration in grassland ecosystems, and the benefits of carbon sequestration were most pronounced in the AP, followed by the TG, SD, and TS. Grazing exclusion duration (DUR) was a significant factor associated with the response of aboveground biomass (AGB) and soil organic carbon (SOC) to grazing exclusion. Moreover, the relationships between AGB and DUR were nonlinear, with existence thresholds of 18, 21, 12, 19, and 23 years in global grasslands (ALL), AP, TS, TG, and SD, respectively. However, the relationship between SOC and DUR was linear, with SOC continuing to increase as DUR increased (up to 40 years). The multi-objective optimization indicated that the optimal duration of grazing exclusion for grassland carbon sequestration was 18–20, 21–23, 12–14, 19–21, and 23–25 years for ALL, AP, TS, TG, and SD, respectively. Our study contributes to the enhancement of grazing management and offers better options for increasing carbon sequestration in grasslands.

Shifts in microbial community composition and metabolism correspond with rapid soil carbon accumulation in response to 20 years of simulated nitrogen deposition

Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) deposition and fertilization in boreal forests frequently reduces decomposition and soil respiration and enhances C storage in the topsoil. This enhancement of the C sink can be as strong as the aboveground biomass response to N additions and has implications for the global C cycle, but the mechanisms remain elusive. We hypothesized that this effect would be associated with a shift in the microbial community and its activity, and particularly by fungal taxa reported to be capable of lignin degradation and organic N acquisition. We sampled the organic layer below the intact litter of a Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst) forest in northern Sweden after 20 years of annual N additions at low (12.5 kg N ha−1 yr−1) and high (50 kg N ha−1 yr−1) rates. We measured microbial biomass using phospholipid fatty-acid analysis (PLFA) and ergosterol measurements and used ITS metagenomics to profile the fungal community of soil and fine-roots. We probed the metabolic activity of the soil community by measuring the activity of extracellular enzymes and evaluated its relationships with the most N responsive soil fungal species. Nitrogen addition decreased the abundance of fungal PLFA markers and changed the fungal community in humus and fine-roots. Specifically, the humus community changed in part due to a shift from Oidiodendron pilicola, Cenococcum geophilum, and Cortinarius caperatus to Tylospora fibrillosa and Russula griseascens. These microbial community changes were associated with decreased activity of Mn-peroxidase and peptidase, and an increase in the activity of C acquiring enzymes. Our results show that the rapid accumulation of C in the humus layer frequently observed in areas with high N deposition is consistent with a shift in microbial metabolism, where decomposition associated with organic N acquisition is downregulated when inorganic N forms are readily available.

Land use intensity controls the diversity-productivity relationship in northern temperate grasslands of China.

The diversity-productivity relationship is a central issue in maintaining the grassland ecosystem's multifunctionality and supporting its sustainable management. Currently, the mainstream opinion on the diversity-productivity relationship recognizes that increases in species diversity promote ecosystem productivity. Here, we challenge this opinion by developing a generalized additive model-based framework to quantify the response rate of grassland productivity to plant species diversity using vegetation survey data we collected along a land-use intensity gradient in northern China. Our results show that the grassland aboveground biomass responds significantly positively to the Shannon-Wiener diversity index at a rate of 46.8 g m-2 per unit increase of the Shannon-Wiener index in enclosure-managed grasslands, under the co-influence of climate and landscape factors. The aboveground biomass response rate stays positive at a magnitude of 47.1 g m-2 in forest understory grassland and 39.7 g m-2 in wetland grassland. Conversely, the response rate turns negative in heavily grazed grasslands at -55.8 g m-2, transiting via near-neutral rates of -7.0 and -7.3 g m-2 in mowing grassland and moderately grazed grassland, respectively. These results suggest that the diversity-productivity relationship in temperate grasslands not only varies by magnitude but also switches directions under varying levels of land use intensity. This highlights the need to consider land use intensity as a more important ecological integrity indicator for future ecological conservation programs in temperate grasslands.

Relationship between the trait response of aboveground and belowground parts of dominant plant species to groundwater depth change in Horqin Sandy Land, eastern China

Climate change and human development will lead to an increase in groundwater levels. This will have a particularly severe impact on arid ecosystems that are highly dependent on groundwater, as overconsumption and pollution of water resources can lead to faster depletion of groundwater. This not only exacerbates the problem of groundwater scarcity, but also may have profound impacts on local ecological environment and biodiversity. However, previous research has focused on aboveground trait responses to precipitation deficits, with less emphasis on concomitant belowground impacts and deep soil drought from groundwater depletion. Therefore, it remains unclear how groundwater depletion affects above and belowground traits of plant to jointly regulate aboveground biomass. In this study, we assessed morphological and ecophysiological traits of two dominant species (herb: Pennisetum centrasiaticum and shrub: Artemisia halodendron) across three groundwater depth (50 cm, 100 cm, and 200 cm) in the Horqin Sandy Land in China, within which photosynthetic rate (Photo), stomatal conductance (Cond), transpiration rate (Tr), internal CO2 concentration (Ci), instantaneous water-use efficiency of leaves (Lwue), total nitrogen (LN) and phosphorus (LP) content of the leaves, root to shoot ratio (RSR), root length density (RLD), total root length (RTL), root length ratio (RLR) were measured. The result showed that the two species growing with increased groundwater depth had reduced photosynthetic rate, and regulated stomatal close to aggregate ability of instantaneous water use efficiency, which may allow plants to meet resource demands under drought stress avoiding transpiration water loss. Plants also reduced the density of all roots and adjusted the vertical distribution of coarse root by changing biomass distribution to acquire deeper soil available water. Correlation analysis showed that the vital traits for aboveground biomass responses appear to be groundwater depth, soil moisture, leaf area, photosynthesis, water use efficiency, and root traits. Overall, the biomass production response of two dominant species may be greatly influenced by the interaction between aboveground and belowground traits in response to changes in groundwater depth. This result contributes to our understanding of adaptive strategies of vegetation in sandy soils and provides additional support for enhancing vegetation productivity in semi-arid ecosystems. The ability of semi-arid ecosystems to predict vegetation dynamics under current and future increasing groundwater depths is crucial.

In this study, long-term field investigation along inside and outside of the fence at Stipa purpurea alpine steppe in northeastern of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau from 2013 to 2021 was used to elucidate ecological responses processes of aboveground biomass of alpine steppe to long-term fencing from perspectives of species diversity and plant functional traits. The main results showed as follows: (1) the negative effects of fencing treatment on species diversity presented strong time-dependence, and the aboveground biomass increased but both stability and asynchrony of biomass decreased after experiencing long-term fencing, suggesting that potential of stable and sustainable provision of eco-services were eroded by the fencing treatment; (2) Responses of plant functional traits to long period fencing were different. Specifically, the sensitivity to the fencing was stronger in morphological trait than that in chlorophyll traits; (3) The significant relationships between the biomass and species, functional traits diversity were also detected, and effects of species diversity regulated by functional traits played indirect roles to aboveground biomass, specially community-weighted traits and functional divergence index jointly played directly dominant effects on biomass. The study demonstrates that plant functional traits through mediating species diversity drive jointly responses of aboveground biomass to long-term grazing exclusion at alpine steppe. Therefore, evaluating the plant species and functional trait factors simultaneously would be all-important for revealing comprehensively ecosystem responses to environmental perturbations at grassland managements in the future. 参考文献 相似文献 引证文献

Spatiotemporal Variation of Urban Plant Diversity and above Ground Biomass in Haikou, China.

Understanding the drivers of urban plant diversity (UPD) and above ground biomass (AGB) in urbanized areas is critical for urban ecosystem services and biodiversity protection. The relationships between UPD and AGB have been investigated simultaneously. However, the drivers of UPD and AGB have been explored independently in tropical coastal areas at different time points. To fill this gap, we conducted a remote sensing interpretation, field plant plot surveys, and compiled socioeconomic and urban greening management survey data. We conducted spatial analyses to investigate the relationships among UPD and socioeconomic variables across different primary and secondary urban functional units (UFUs) in the tropical urban ecosystems of the coastal city of Haikou, China. The primary UFUs with the highest AGB were the recreation and leisure districts in 2015 and 2021. In 2015, AGB was mainly correlated with the number of herb species in undeveloped land and the districts of industry, business, recreation, and leisure. In 2021, AGB was affected primarily by the frequency of fertilizing, maintenance, and watering. Our study found that the relationship between UPD and AGB varied across time and space in Haikou. The plant diversity and AGB's response to human activities and socioeconomics appear to have a time-lag effect. These results provide new insights in understanding how management decisions affect urban vegetation and could be used to guide future urban green space planning in Haikou.

Light–acquisition traits link aboveground biomass and environment in inner saline–alkaline herbaceous marshes

A functional response–effect approach could predict how environmental changes affect ecosystem functioning. However, few studies have applied this approach to inner saline–alkaline marsh ecosystems where soil saline–alkaline, flooding/drought and nutrients stresses threat ecological functioning. To disentangle the relationships between environmental conditions and ecosystem functioning, a total of 81 plots were investigated across 22 marsh sites dominated by Phragmites australis and Bolboschoenus planiculmis in Western Songnen Plain wetlands, China. For both plant communities combined, deep flooding supported communities with higher specific leaf area (SLA), plant height and leaf nitrogen (N) content but lower leaf thickness. On the contrary, high soil salt content induced low leaf N and phosphorus (P) content, SLA and plant height. Only light acquisition–related trait, plant height and SLA, was the key traits which determined the relationships between ecosystem functioning (aboveground biomass) and saline–alkaline wetland environment. Yet indirect key traits related nutrient and water acquisition such as leaf thickness, N and P content were also found, and mediated the response of aboveground biomass through the allometric relationships with plant height or SLA. For the individual species community, only plant height was the key trait shared by P. australis and B. planiculmis, indicating the universality of plant height as a key trait for grass and sedge plants to explain how ecosystem functioning responds to abiotic factors. Hence, our findings suggest that saltmarsh plants are more inclined to alter light–acquisition traits to mediate the response of ecosystem functioning to environmental changes and that plant height is a particularly useful trait to predict plant productivity in earth system models under future environmental changes in inner saline–alkaline wetlands.

Evaluation of the Effects of Water and Salinity Stress on the Growth and Biochemistry of Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) at the Branching Stage

The response of alfalfa to water and salinity stress differs during the whole growth period, and water stress has the most severe effects on the yield of alfalfa at the branching stage. However, the presence of soil salt can also enhance its drought resistance and alleviate the impact of water stress on yield. Thus, information on the responses of aboveground biomass, water-use efficiency and osmolytes to water and salinity stress at the branching stages of alfalfa development is urgently required. A pot experiment that combined three irrigation levels of 55–70% (W1), 70–85% (W2) and 85–100% (W3) of field capacity (FC) and four salinity levels was conducted in Dengkou County, Inner Mongolia, China, in 2018 and 2019. The percentage of mixed salt (NaCl:Na2SO4 = 1:1 [w/w]) added for the salinity treatments was 0, 2, 4 and 6% of the soil dry weight and was designated as S0–S3, respectively. The water consumption, biomass, osmolytes, such as proline and Na+, and the activities of antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD), of alfalfa were measured during its early flowering stage. In general, the plant height, aboveground biomass, root biomass and water consumption of alfalfa increased with the decrease in soil salinity and increase in the amount of irrigation applied. When the salt >3 g kg−1, alfalfa could improve its stress resistance by increasing the contents of proline and Na+ and the activity of POD and decreasing the activity of SOD, but the aboveground biomass and water consumption decreased. However, alfalfa has a certain cross adaptation ability under water and salt stress at the branching stage, particularly when salt is less than 3 g kg−1. Compared with single water stress, adding an appropriate amount of salt (≤3 g kg−1) increased the contents of proline and Na+ and the activities of SOD and POD, which led to water consumption and aboveground biomass of alfalfa increases of 11.93% and 17.51%, respectively. In conclusion, the alfalfa was tolerant to moderate (3 g kg−1) salt stress. The alfalfa with higher proline, SOD and POD activity and Na+ was better able to yield well under salt stress. Meanwhile, combined with moderate irrigation (70–85% FC), the productivity of alfalfa was improved better. The results can provide a theoretical basis for the utilization of alfalfa in salinized land.

Tipping point of plant functional traits of Leymus chinensis to nitrogen addition in a temperate grassland.

It has widely been documented that nitrogen (N) enrichment stimulates plant growth and modifies plant functional traits in the terrestrial ecosystem. However, it remains unclear whether there are critical transitions or tipping points for the response of plant growth or traits to N enrichment, and how these responses differ to different N forms. We chose the native, perennial clonal grass, Leymus chinensis in Inner Mongolia steppe, and conducted a field experiment, in which six N addition rates (0, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 g N m–2 year–1) and five N compound types [NH4NO3, (NH4)2SO4, NH4HCO3, CO(NH2)2, slow-release CO(NH2)2] are considered. Here, we found that the different N compound types had no significant effect on the growth of L. chinensis. N addition rate significantly increased plant aboveground biomass and leaf nitrogen concentration, whereas decreased leaf dry matter content. The tipping point for N-induced aboveground biomass increase was at 10 g N m–2 year–1, and the changes in functional traits were at N addition rates of 20 g N m–2 year–1. Our findings suggested that the responses of aboveground biomass and functional traits to N addition were asymmetric, in which responses in aboveground biomass were more sensitive than that in functional traits. The differential sensitivity of aboveground biomass and functional traits of L. chinensis occurred to N deposition highlights the importance of functional traits in mediating ecosystem functioning in the face of N deposition, regardless of which chemical forms dominate in the deposited N.

Data-driven quantification of nitrogen enrichment impact on Northern Hemisphere plant biomass

The production of anthropogenic reactive nitrogen (N) has grown so much in the last century that quantifying the effect of N enrichment on plant growth has become a central question for carbon (C) cycle research. Numerous field experiments generally found that N enrichment increased site-scale plant biomass, although the magnitude of the response and sign varied across experiments. We quantified the response of terrestrial natural vegetation biomass to N enrichment in the Northern Hemisphere (>30° N) by scaling up data from 773 field observations (142 sites) of the response of biomass to N enrichment using machine-learning algorithms. N enrichment had a significant and nonlinear effect on aboveground biomass (AGB), but a marginal effect on belowground biomass. The most influential variables on the AGB response were the amount of N applied, mean biomass before the experiment, the treatment duration and soil phosphorus availability. From the machine learning models, we found that N enrichment due to increased atmospheric N deposition during 1993–2010 has enhanced total biomass by 1.1 ± 0.3 Pg C, in absence of losses from harvest and disturbances. The largest effect of N enrichment on plant growth occurred in northeastern Asia, where N deposition markedly increased. These estimates were similar to the range of values provided by state-of-the-art C–N ecosystem process models. This work provides data-driven insights into hemisphere-scale N enrichment effect on plant biomass growth, which allows to constrain the terrestrial ecosystem process model used to predict future terrestrial C storage.

The carbon sequestration response of aboveground biomass and soils to nutrient enrichment in boreal forests depends on baseline site productivity

Nutrient enrichment can alleviate productivity limitations and thus substantially increase carbon (C) uptake in northern coniferous forests. Yet, factors controlling stand-to-stand variation of forest ecosystem responses to nutrient enrichment remain unclear. We used five long-term (13 years) nutrient-enrichment experiments across Sweden, where nitrogen (N), phosphorus, and potassium were applied annually to young Norway spruce forests that varied in their baseline ecosystem properties. We measured tree biomass and soil C and N stocks, litterfall C inputs, soil CO2 efflux, and shifts in composition and biomass of soil microbial communities to understand the links between above and belowground responses to nutrient enrichment. We found that the strongest responses in tree biomass occurred when baseline site productivity was lowest. High increases in tree biomass C stocks were generally balanced by weaker responses in organic soil C stocks. The average ecosystem C–N response rate was 35 kg C kg−1 N added, with a nearly five-fold greater response rate in tree biomass than in soil. The positive nutrient enrichment effects on ecosystem C sinks were driven by a 95% increase in tree biomass C stocks, 150% increase in litter production, 67% increase in organic layer C stocks, and a 46% reduction in soil CO2 efflux accompanied by compositional changes in soil microbial communities. Our results show that ecosystem C uptake in spruce forests in northern Europe can be substantially enhanced by nutrient enrichment; however, the strength of the responses and whether the enhancement occurs mainly in tree biomass or soils are dependent on baseline forest productivity.

Effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 and its interaction with temperature and nitrogen on yield of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.): a meta-analysis

AimsThe general aim of this meta-analysis is to synthesize and summarize the mean response of barley yield variables to elevated CO2 (eCO2) and how temperature and nitrogen (N) affect the CO2-induced yield responses of barley.MethodsA meta-analysis procedure was used to analyze five yield variables of barley extracted from 22 studies to determine the effect size and the magnitude concerning eCO2 and its interaction with temperature and N.ResultsCO2 enrichment increased aboveground biomass (23.8%), grain number (24.8%), and grain yield (27.4%). The magnitude of the responses to eCO2 was affected by genotype, temperature, nitrogen, and CO2 exposure methods. Genotype “Anakin” shows the highest CO2 response of aboveground biomass (47.1%), while “Bambina” had the highest grain number (58.4%). Grain yield response was observed to be higher for genotypes “Alexis” (38.1%) and “Atem” (33.7%) under eCO2. The increase of aboveground biomass and grain yield was higher when plants were grown under eCO2 in combination with higher N (151–200 kg ha−1). The interaction between eCO2 and three different temperature levels was analyzed to identify the impacts on barley yield components. The results revealed that the CO2-induced increase in grain number and grain yield was higher in combination with a temperature level of 21–25 °C as compared to lower levels (< 15 and 16–20 ℃). The response of barley yield to eCO2 was higher in growth chambers than in other CO2 exposure methods. Moreover, a higher response of aboveground biomass and grain yield to eCO2 was observed for pot-grown plants compared to field-grown.ConclusionsOverall, results suggest that the maximal barley production under eCO2 will be obtained in combination with high N fertilizer and temperature levels (21–25 °C).

Weed suppression in cover crop mixtures under contrasted levels of resource availability

Cover crop (CC) mixtures appear as a promising agroecological tool for weed management. Although CC supress weed growth by competing for resources, their suppressive effect under contrasting levels of soil resource availability remains poorly documented. A two field:year experiment was conducted to investigate the weed suppressive effect of four CC mixtures. They were composed of 2 or 8 species including or not legume species and compared to a bare soil control. The experiment included two levels of irrigation and nitrogen fertilisation at CC sowing. The objectives were to assess (i) weed and CC aboveground biomass response to CC mixtures and resource availability, (ii) the weed suppressive effect of CC mixtures across a gradient of CC biomass and (iii) weed community response to CC mixtures and resource availability. CC and weed biomass were mainly influenced by interactions between CC mixtures and fertilisation and between CC mixtures and irrigation, with contrasted effects between field:years. Nitrogen fertilisation increased biomass of non-legume based CC mixtures but this only resulted into a further reduction of weed biomass of little biological relevance. Legume-based CC mixtures suppressed weeds to a greater extent without nitrogen fertilisation in year 2 but not in year 1, possibly due to contrasted initial soil nitrogen availability (lower in year 2). Weed biomass generally benefited more from irrigation than CC mixtures. Among the 33 weed species recorded, weed communities in each plot were dominated by wheat volunteers, Geranium dissectum, Veronica persica and Echinochloa crus-galli, whose biomass varied depending on the interaction between year, CC mixture and resource availability. Our results revealed that competitive outcomes between CC mixtures and weed species were driven by a complex interaction between resource availability and species traits. Further experiments focusing on plant traits should improve our understanding of weed:CC competitive outcomes under various levels of resource availability.

Field experiments underestimate aboveground biomass response to drought

Researchers use both experiments and observations to study the impacts of climate change on ecosystems, but results from these contrasting approaches have not been systematically compared for droughts. Using a meta-analysis and accounting for potential confounding factors, we demonstrate that aboveground biomass responded only about half as much to experimentally imposed drought events as to natural droughts. Our findings indicate that experimental results may underestimate climate change impacts and highlight the need to integrate results across approaches.

A direct comparison of the effects and mechanisms between species richness and genotype richness in a dominant species on multiple ecosystem functions.

Both species (interspecific) richness and genotype (intraspecific) richness of dominant species have significant effects on ecosystem functioning directly or indirectly by regulating plant community functional structure. However, the similarities and differences of the effects between inter‐ and intraspecific levels are poorly understood. In this study, we selected the main species in the semi‐arid Eurasian typical steppe as study objects and simultaneously carried out a species richness experiment and a genotype richness experiment of Stipa grandis which is one of the dominant species in this region. We investigated how plants at each of the two richness levels affected multiple ecosystem functions (biomass, soil C, N and P cycles) directly and indirectly by regulating community functional structure, including community‐weighted mean trait values (CWM) and functional dispersion (FDis). Both species richness and genotype richness showed significant direct effects on soil P cycle, and FDis significantly mediated the responses of aboveground biomass and soil N cycle to the changes of species richness and the response of belowground biomass to the changes of genotype richness in S. grandis. CWM showed significant effects on biomass in the species richness experiment and soil nutrient cycles in the genotype richness experiment, independently of the levels of plant richness. These findings provide experimental insights of intraspecific richness effects into the relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, and highlight the importance of conserving the intraspecific diversity of dominant species in the semi‐arid steppe regions.

Sensitivity of aboveground biomass and species composition to climate change in boreal forests of Northeastern China

Climate change is more pronounced in boreal forests than in other terrestrial ecosystems, and thus aboveground biomass and species composition of boreal forests have already been altered by increasing temperature and precipitation. There are substantial uncertainties in predicting aboveground biomass and species composition of boreal forests in response to climate change since the uncertainty in climate change predictions. This makes it challenging to design forest management strategies for promoting boreal forests to adaption climate change. In this study, we designed a factorial experiment and a model coupling framework to quantify the sensitivity of aboveground biomass and species composition of boreal forests in response to climate change. Our results showed that the uncertainties in temperature and precipitation predictions caused the divergent responses of aboveground biomass and species composition to climate change in the boreal forests of northeastern China. Aboveground biomass of boreal forests is more sensitive to precipitation than temperature. There are divergent responses of tree species to temperature and precipitation over the 21st century. This suggests that it is necessary to quantify and reduce the uncertainty in climate change predictions through statistical analysis methods before applying the predictions from general circulation models (GCMS) to study the effects of climate change on forest ecosystems.

Low phosphorus supply constrains plant responses to elevated CO2 : A meta-analysis.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential macro-nutrient required for plant metabolism and growth. Low P availability could potentially limit plant responses to elevated carbon dioxide (eCO2 ), but consensus has yet to be reached on the extent of this limitation. Here, based on data from experiments that manipulated both CO2 and P for young individuals of woody and non-woody species, we present a meta-analysis of P limitation impacts on plant growth, physiological, and morphological response to eCO2 . We show that low P availability attenuated plant photosynthetic response to eCO2 by approximately one-quarter, leading to a reduced, but still positive photosynthetic response to eCO2 compared to those under high P availability. Furthermore, low P limited plant aboveground, belowground, and total biomass responses to eCO2 , by 14.7%, 14.3%, and 12.4%, respectively, equivalent to an approximate halving of the eCO2 responses observed under high P availability. In comparison, low P availability did not significantly alter the eCO2 -induced changes in plant tissue nutrient concentration, suggesting tissue nutrient flexibility is an important mechanism allowing biomass response to eCO2 under low P availability. Low P significantly reduced the eCO2 -induced increase in leaf area by 14.3%, mirroring the aboveground biomass response, but low P did not affect the eCO2 -induced increase in root length. Woody plants exhibited stronger attenuation effect of low P on aboveground biomass response to eCO2 than non-woody plants, while plants with different mycorrhizal associations showed similar responses to low P and eCO2 interaction. This meta-analysis highlights crucial data gaps in capturing plant responses to eCO2 and low P availability. Field-based experiments with longer-term exposure of both CO2 and P manipulations are critically needed to provide ecosystem-scale understanding. Taken together, our results provide a quantitative baseline to constrain model-based hypotheses of plant responses to eCO2 under P limitation, thereby improving projections of future global change impacts.
