Improvement the design of microwave dual‐band BPF by DGS technique

ABSTRACTThis article presents a new method for designing a dual‐band bandpass filter at microwave frequency with improvement on filter characteristics like bandwidth, in band insertion loss and outband and decrease the neutral harmonics on stopband with using defected ground structure (DGS) technique. The basic resonator, with a single passband, was designed using an open‐circuit capacitor‐coupled stripline resonator. An I‐shape architecture was employed at the middle part of the basic resonator to create a dual‐passband frequency response. Finally, the current density of the filter with DGS and without DGS is shown. Simulation results for the proposed filter include performance at 4.6 GHz and 7.3 GHz with respective bandwidths of 178 MHz and 155 MHz. Cross section versus time delay and trapping probability

We study the behavior of the s-wave partial cross section σ(k), the Wigner–Smith time delay τ(k), and the trapping probability P(k) as function of the wave number k. The s-wave central square well is used for concreteness, simplicity, and to elucidate the controversy whether it shows true resonances. It is shown that, except for very sharp structures, the resonance part of the cross section, the trapping probability, and the time delay, reach their local maxima at different values of k. We show numerically that τ(k)>0 at its local maxima, occurring just before the resonant part of the cross section reaches its local maxima. These results are discussed in the light of the standard definition of resonance.

Equivalent mechanical boundary conditions for single layer graphene sheets

To describe and analyse mechanical structures due to external loads, equation of motion must be supplemented with appropriate boundary conditions. When nanomechanical structures (especially layered systems) are considered, satisfying the boundaries is more challenging. It may be essential to develop a specific methodology for any system in such scale and configuration. This work introduces a general approach for boundary conditions of monolayer graphene sheets as the most important part of future sensors and resonators in nanoelectromechanical systems. Comparing with the experiments, it has been demonstrated that the graphene sheets on the adhesive surfaces should be assumed as a hinged edge condition and not as a clamped one. As a result, inaccuracy of the commonly used rigid base as a clamped condition is proven due to comparison with a reported experiment. It is suggested that a flexible substrate can be replaced to have better accordance. A flexible silicon base with equilibrium distance equal to s = 2.5 Å and depth of potential well equal to ε = 0.02 eV is obtained as the best substrate for a square graphene sheet under doubly clamped edge conditions.

Comparative study of resonant and sequential features in electron field emission from composite surfaces

A simple model of a layered hetero-structure was developed and used to simultaneously compute and compare resonant and sequential electron field emission currents. It was found that, while various slope changes appear in both current-field characteristics, for the sequential tunneling type of emission, such features are merely interference effects. They occur in parts of the structure, prior to the electrons' lingering in the quasi-bound states from which field emission proceeds. These purely quantum effects further combine with the flow effects resulting from the steady current requirement and give corresponding field variations of the electron population of the quasi-bound states, which further react on the resonant part of the current. A spectral approach of the two types of field emission is also considered by computing the total energy distribution of electrons in each case. The differences between these possible spectra are pointed out and discussed.

Vibration optimization of ZnO thin film bulk acoustic resonator with ring electrodes

A rectangular ZnO thin film bulk acoustic resonator with ring electrodes is presented in this paper to demonstrate the existence of a nearly uniform displacement distribution at the central part of this typical resonator. The variational formulation based on two-dimensional scalar differential equations provides a theoretical foundation for the Ritz method adopted in our analysis. The resonant frequencies and vibration distributions for the thickness-extensional modes of this ring electrode resonator are obtained. The structural parameters are optimized to achieve a more uniform displacement distribution and therefore a uniform mass sensitivity, which guarantee the high accuracy and repeatable measurement for sensor detection in an air or a liquid environment. These results provide a fundamental reference for the design and optimization of the high quality sensor.

ON THREE-POINT BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEM

Three-point boundary value problems for the second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations are considered. Existence of solutions are established by using the quasilinearization approach. As an application, the Emden-Fowler type problems with nonresonant and resonant linear parts are considered to demonstrate our results.

Radiative neutron capture cross sections onLu176at DANCE

The cross section of the neutron capture reaction $^{176}\mathrm{Lu}(n,\ensuremath{\gamma})$ has been measured for a wide incident neutron energy range with the Detector for Advanced Neutron Capture Experiments at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. The thermal neutron capture cross section was determined to be $(1912\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}132)$ b for one of the Lu natural isotopes, $^{176}\mathrm{Lu}$. The resonance part was measured and compared to the Mughabghab's atlas using the $R$-matrix code, sammy. At higher neutron energies the measured cross sections are compared to ENDF/B-VII.1, JEFF-3.2, and BRC evaluated nuclear data. The Maxwellian averaged cross sections in a stellar plasma for thermal energies between 5 keV and 100 keV were extracted using these data.

Proposal for a permanent magnet system with a constant gradient mechanically adjustable in direction and strength

ABSTRACTA design for a permanent magnet system is proposed that generates spatially homogeneous, constant magnetic field gradients, thus creating conditions suitable for MRI without gradient coils and amplifiers. This is achieved by superimposing a weak Halbach quadrupole on a strong Halbach dipole. Rotation of either the quadrupole or the entire magnet assembly can be used to generate two‐dimensional images via filtered backprojection. Additionally, the mutual rotation of two quadrupoles can be used to scale the resulting gradient. If both gradients have identical strength the gradient can even be made to vanish. The concept is demonstrated by analytical considerations and FEM simulations. However, a demonstration on a working prototype is still pending. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Permittivity measurement of liquids, powders, and suspensions using a parallel‐plate cell

ABSTRACTThis work describes the measurement of complex permittivity (or dielectric constant) of powders (water insoluble), solutions, and suspensions using a parallel‐plate capacitor cell. An impedance analyzer measures the cell's impedance at radio frequencies used in nuclear magnetic resonance and magnetic resonance imaging (10–300 MHz) through an appropriate test fixture. The cell's impedance is fitted to an equivalent circuit using a Matlab script or other software, and the permittivity of the material is extracted after calibration with known materials. The permittivity of the solid material is obtained from that of the powder suspension using known mixing rules. Measurements for most materials tested are in agreement with those obtained using standard coaxial probes. Some discrepancies are observed for loose powders because of the difficulty of controlling the amount of packing. For high‐permittivity materials or conductive solutions an enhanced equivalent circuit has been found that characterizes the cell's behavior over the full frequency range. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
