Novel high light transmittance material was synthesized by dimethyl itaconic acid and diethyl itaconic acid via piecewise bulk polymerization, using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as catalyst. Its chemical structure was characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The thermal performance of polymer was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), showing its glass transition temperature (Tg) was between 52 °C and 72 °C, thermal decomposition temperature above 230 °C, suitable for processing. The transmittance of the polymer is as high as 92% and a density of 1.1 g/cm3, which has the optical device application potential. We also tested the hydrophilicity of the material surface by the contact angle test, combined with the data of simulated calculation to explore the influence factors of hydrophilic change on the material surface.
