The Detection and Calculation of Design-Weighting on Indoor Environmental Elements—Illustrated by Real Interior Design Projects

In interior design projects, homeowners’ expectations and thoughts in mind are sometimes ambiguous and hard to pinpoint. This lack of clarity can lead to disagreements between owners and designers, making it difficult for designers to receive due remuneration. At the same time, the design project always has a restricted budget. Suppose the funds could be prioritized based on owners’ preferred weight of the indoor elements, with a larger portion of the budget allocated to the most crucial elements. In that case, it can significantly enhance the owner’s satisfaction. To address these challenges, this research introduces a novel analytical and computational approach that leverages the Positive And Negative Affects Schedule (PANAS) and Heart Rate Variability (HRV) to assess homeowners’ sentiments toward various indoor elements. This method aims to determine indoor elements’ design-weighting, design sequence, and distribution of project budgets, enabling designers to understand better and meet homeowners’ genuine needs and expectations in interior design projects. The efficacy of this approach was evaluated through the analysis of three real-life residential interior design projects. Data from the PANAS emotion scale and heart rate variability (HRV) measurements of the homeowners were collected before and after project completion. The findings revealed high satisfaction among homeowners following project execution. By adjusting indoor elements, owners’ negative emotions decreased significantly, positive emotions surged, and there was an improvement in the activity of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves, leading to enhanced physical and mental well-being. Furthermore, in-depth interviews with homeowners corroborated the effectiveness of the analytical calculation method in identifying latent negative indoor elements of concern to homeowners, thereby validating the practical utility of this approach in real-world design scenarios.

Research on Residential Interior Design and Energy Saving Optimization with Sustainable Low-carbon Development

The escalating crisis of global warming, driven by the emission of greenhouse gases, poses a formidable challenge for humanity as a whole. Notably, the construction industry contributes significantly to the global greenhouse gas inventory. Consequently, prioritizing low-carbon construction assumes paramount importance in mitigating the pervasive impact of the greenhouse effect on a global scale. Such an endeavor stands as a crucial safeguard for ensuring the sustainable development of human civilization. Therefore, from the perspective of low- carbon building design optimization research is an important part of low-carbon building. From the perspective of architectural design, this paper summarizes that low-carbon building design should pay attention to following aspects: reasonable use of natural lighting and natural ventilation, reduce the carbon emission value of building use stage; Taking the transformation project of the former engineering Institute of Southeast University as an example, this paper probes into the effect of design optimization on reducing carbon emissions, and quantitatively studies the relationship between the design optimization of lighting, ventilation and envelope structure materials and the reduction of building carbon emissions. The Angle selection of roof skylight is studied from the Angle of day- lighting optimization, the size and position of facade opening and the strategy of natural ventilation path are studied from the Angle of ventilation optimization. The indoor ventilation further reduces the refrigeration energy consumption, which is 22.1% less than before the renovation, and the roof reduces the heat gain by 22%-32%.e.

Exploring the relationship between home environmental characteristics and restorative effect through neural activities.

As society and the economy have advanced, the focus of architectural and interior environment design has shifted from practicality to eliciting emotional responses, such as stimulating environments and innovative inclusive designs. Of particular interest is the home environment, as it is best suited for achieving restorative effects, leading to a debate between interior qualities and restorative impact. This study explored the relationships between home characteristics, restorative potential, and neural activities using the Neu-VR. The results of the regression analysis revealed statistically significant relationships between interior properties and restorative potential. We examined each potential characteristic of the home environment that could have a restorative impact and elucidated the environmental characteristics that should be emphasized in residential interior design. These findings contribute evidence-based knowledge for designing therapeutic indoor environments. And combining different restorative potential environments with neural activity, discussed new neuro activities which may predict restorativeness, decoded the new indicators of neuro activity for environmental design.

Residential Interior Design for People with Special Needs in Thailand Based on Physical Abilities: Age, Gender, and Living Environment Considerations

Residential interior design for people with special needs necessitates more specific research, especially with respect to physical abilities. Previous studies, as opposed to general people, have overlooked the nuanced requirements generated by age, gender, and living environment differences. This study aims to examine physical abilities across different ages, genders, and residencies and identify relationships between in-home mobility and physical abilities among people with special needs. A total of 384 participants (eight different types of disabilities) completed electronic questionnaires. Among young, adult, and older groups, physical abilities and self-support showed statistical differences. Males demonstrated higher physical ability levels but decreased hand–arm movements than females. Greater physical abilities and subjective health were found in urban residents compared to non-urban residents. Additionally, in-home mobility was positively associated with out-of-home mobility, physical abilities, independence, and subjective health (all p values < 0.05). Thus, physical abilities revealed disparities across ages, genders, and resident settings. Also, the greater the mobility inside the house, the more possibilities there are to enhance physical abilities both inside and outside the house, independence, and subjective health. Design recommendations are provided regarding layout, furniture, flooring, and lighting. The consideration of these specific requirements in residential interior design is encouraged.

Application Research of the "Undefined Blank Space Design Method" in Residential Interior Design - A Case Study of Interior Space Design in a Residential Community in Wuhan

In China's intensive urban development and the post-pandemic era, the value of residential housing is increasingly emphasized. However, capital constraints limit the spatial requirements of residential interiors, leading to repetitive constructions lacking individual value and spatial flexibility. This study intervenes in space by expanding the traditional concept of "blank space" through empirical design research on the interior of a residential community in Wuhan. We propose a compact residential space design method based on the "undefined blank space" concept, aiming to coordinate the interior space hierarchy of commodity housing and diverse individual demands. Results highlight that the removal of non-load-bearing walls maximizes the individuality and flexibility of space. Variable combined blank interfaces enable the space to fit multiple usage scenarios. The use of transparent materials can blur spatial boundaries to make it more open. Physical blank spaces and spiritual needs must be combined to truly achieve individual demands.

Exploring How FCS Educators Teach Interior Design in Idaho, Utah, and Washington

University students learn about interior design through secondary Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) classes; however, it is unknown what interior design content is taught given the flexibility in FCS curriculum. An online survey was administered to FCS educators in Idaho, Utah, and Washington to uncover if and what interior design content is taught. The study revealed that residential interior design and historical content is taught, educators took one interior design course, and educators would utilize interior design resources if available. Including interior design content in FCS courses can broaden students’ understanding of how interior design impacts occupants and clarifies misconceptions about the profession.

An Analysis and Study on the Adjustment of Indoor Micro-climatic Environment for Traditional Residential Houses in Jiangxi Province

In recent years, with the accelerating pace of human transformation of nature, the depletion of natural resources, the deterioration of the climate and other issues are outstanding, so, green sustainable development has become a hot topic. At present, the domestic design of residential indoor microclimates relies on the adjustment of high energy consumption equipment to meet the needs of the environment, but ignores the appropriate design methods impacting on the living microenvironment, which may reduce energy consumption and achieving sustainable development and creating green buildings as well. This paper takes the Jiangxi area as the research scope, takes the microclimate of the indoor residential environment as the research object, and starts with presentation on the climate characteristics of the hot, rainy and humid Jiangnan climate in Jiangxi Province, combines the morphological characteristics of traditional residential houses and climate regulation behavior in local area for addressing the spatial microclimate, to study and summarize the residential interior design strategies suitable for the climate and environment in the same place, hopefully to provide the basis for improving the microclimate environment of indoor residences.

The purpose of the study was to investigate defect cases in residential interior design, to identify the state of defects, and to categorize types of defect and disputes. In addition, consumer appraisal to residential interior design service were analyzed. The results of this study could provide fundamental information regarding the defects and claims in residential interior design. First, we did literature review for defect disputes in architectural design and interior design. We identify the definition of defects by building life cycle, by state of construction, by activity, and by design performance. Second, we analysed interior design defects cases reported in Korea Consumer Agency & Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. A total of 49 cases of defect disputes in residential interior design from 2000 to 2015 were investigated. As a result, many defects appeared during the construction stage. A majority of defects cases fall into insulation, water-proofing/leakage work. In terms of design aspects claim, functional and aesthetic defects were claimed. Third, from Consumer Market Evaluation Indicators, raw data from 500 respondents were investigated for the housing repair and interior design. It is found that information comparability, responsiveness to consumer claim, price, and safety are important factors for consumer satisfaction in interior design.

The Effects of an Experiential Service-Learning Project on Residential Interior Design Students’ Attitudes toward Design and Community

This mixed research methods study explores whether project-based service-learning projects promote greater learning than standard project-based projects and whether introduced earlier into the curriculum promotes a greater student understanding of the world issues affecting their community. The present study focused on comparing sophomore and junior residential interior design courses that had project-based service-learning assignments. Both undergraduate sophomore and junior courses developed standard design project assignments in the first half of the academic semester and a project-based service-learning assignment in the second half of the academic semester. Collection of research participants’ perceptions was through pre and post surveys and course-required reflection journals. The research findings indicated that the opportunity to work with an actual non-for-profit client and actual building were the most important influence on student learning outcomes. Yet, findings also indicate that on a more personal level students reported experiencing deeper emotional growth due to their knowledge that their design solutions would ultimately improve the lives of others in the community. Furthermore, evidence shows that the service component of the project had no significant influence in student learning, regardless of academic level. Consequently, suggesting that project based service assignments may occur at any point in the curriculum.

Virtual Environment as a Design Tool for Sustainable Residential Spaces in Light of Theory of Planned Behavior

This study aims to reveal the impact of Virtual Environment as a design tool on the interior architect's design behavior towards adopting sustainable residential interior design practices. This approach is guided by the Theory of Planned Behaviour as a theoretical framework; the purpose as such would serve to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and its practical implementation to promote sustainable design practices. Findings revealed that Virtual Environment is anticipated to assist the interior architect in integrating the complex sustainable residential design objectives, and thus positively affect the interior architect's behavioral performance towards embracing sustainable residential design solutions.

The Influence of Room Colors in A House for Its Occupants

Home was a place where each individual could go after doing various routine activities. Residential interior design would support the quality of life of its occupants. The majority of the population of Indonesia, especially in Jakarta, had been aware of the importance of design interior of their homes properly. However, the selection of interior elements of color that was supporting the smoothness of the activities in a room was not considered as whole. The research objective was to analyze a great color for every room in the home based on the theory and the psychology of color. This article was expected to be a guide for those who will design an interior room. The method used was qualitative method in the form of observation and study of literature. Results of the study is the choice of a suitable color that fit in any room home, such as the living room, bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom can maximize the function of the room for the occupants.

Improving Design Performance of Students in Interior Architecture Undergraduate Education

Considering the developing conditions in interior architecture undergraduate education and inevitability of performing restructuring works to this end is a reality expressed also in the literature. Performance-based design is one of the key concepts in this approach. When the works as to interior design project performance are examined it can be observed that conducting assessments of user recognition correctly and fully at the preliminary stage of project is an important component affecting the design performance. This is because the success of interior space design is measured by considering to what extent the requirements of the users are met. In this context, the purpose of this study has been designated as the creation of documents the students will benefit from while determining user requirements at the preliminary stage of the project within the purview of Interior Architecture Design Studio courses within the interior design undergraduate education. The scope of the study is limited to only residential interior design projects with an eye to reach a more elaborate result. Literature and practical application resources were researched to determine the documents utilized for recognizing the users in residential interior design as methodology at the first stage in line with the scope and purpose defined. Subsequently, all the documents obtained were examined by making comparisons in a systematic manner and the shortcomings of the cited documents were revealed. And in the final stage, suggestions were made with a view to overcome these shortcomings. It will be possible to determine user requirements more accurately through utilization of documents created in line with suggestions to be made within the purview of the study at the preliminary stage of residential interior design projects by interior architecture undergraduate students and this will increase the students' success as to designing significantly.

The result is a brief explanation and easy to apply regarding the types of information that can be used to illuminate any activity on the interior of the residence.
