Carrying the Torch Forward, Meeting the Future, and Advancing the Charge

As the incoming editorial team, we explore the challenges and opportunities facing social equity in a complex global society and relate them to the opportunities for promoting social equity through the pages of the Journal of Social Equity and Public Administration (JSEPA). The authors discuss the importance of delivering equitable public service through knowledgeable civil discourse from a plurality of voices. The growth of JSEPA’s influence relies upon its inclusive contributions to the social equity discourse. The unending pursuit and submission of excellent research that asks thoughtful, future-focused questions exemplifies the discourse found in JSEPA, where we aim to illuminate the power and necessity of the fourth pillar of public administration—social equity. This pillar takes its rightful place alongside the traditional three pillars of public administration: effectiveness, efficiency, and economy. JSEPA provides a unique space with its focus on this fourth pillar and in doing so, contributes meaningfully to public administration journals committed to the traditional pillars.

Barriers and Perceptions Regarding Research Among Ophthalmology Residents in Thailand: A Descriptive Study

Objective: This study aimed to assess the barriers and perceptions of ophthalmology residents toward research and to discern the differences between residents with and without prior research experience before commencingophthalmology training. Materials and Methods: An online survey using Google Forms was conducted to collect data. The survey comprised three sections: general information, research obstacles, and attitudes. Participants utilized a 5-point Likert scale for reporting agreement. Results: The survey was completed by 122 ophthalmology residents, representing a 51.3% response rate. Among them, 54.1% reported having research experience before residency. The top three obstacles identified were “lack of statistical knowledge” (mean 3.80, standard deviation 1.18), “lack of knowledge and experience in manuscript writing” (mean 3.79, SD 1.21), and “lack of time due to routine workload” (mean 3.75, SD 1.15). Residents without research experience demonstrated significantly greater difficulties in research skills, manuscript preparation, and motivation for research submission. While overall research attitudes were positive (mean 3.20, SD 1.18), residents with prior experience displayed significantly more favorable dispositions across various facets of research. These were preferences, perceived educational and career advantages, potential for income generation, and enhancement of communication skills. Conversely, the non-experienced residents primarily viewed research as a graduation requirement. Conclusion: Ophthalmology residents encountered considerable challenges in conducting research, primarily stemming from limited statistical knowledge and inadequate competency in manuscript writing. Implementingtargeted support measures to address these barriers can foster positive research attitudes and encourage sustained research engagement among residents.

An ecological inquiry into the identity formation of a novice TESOL research mentor: Critical autoethnographic narratives in focus

This study reports on the identity formation of the author as a novice research mentor of an independent research course for TESOL teachers over six months (from the course design to the first research submission). The data is collected from four critical autoethnographic narratives written by the author before, during, and after this period. The narratives were analysed thematically with an eye on the theoretical underpinning of the study, i.e. ecological perspective, in three ecological layers namely micro-, meso-, and macrosystem. The results revealed that the author’s identity construction was influenced by different factors such as ‘autonomy in mentoring’, ‘mediating mentorship’, or ‘academic recognition’ in three levels of educational ecology. The results of this study can motivate research mentors and teacher educators, specifically novice ones, to find some similarities with the ideas discussed in this research and to record their lived experiences as a tool for reflection.

Enhancing research support services in health organizations by implementing a "Research Concierge Desk", a case study.

Health organizations with teaching and research responsibilities face the need to establish a comprehensive system that addresses the processes and challenges associated with research activities; a system that assists local institutes in becoming research-active by identifying gaps and providing actionable recommendations. The involvement of epidemiologists, biostatisticians, and data scientists is paramount in offering technical and scientific support to health researchers. In our organization, research support services, such as technical, statistical, logistical, and scientific assistance, have been provided to researchers for the past 20 years under the name of "Data Clinic Service". This article discusses the establishment of a physical booth called the "Research Concierge Desk" within a medical center to offer on-site, free-of-charge, and direct consultations to researchers, thereby improving accessibility to data clinic services. The underlying concept of the "Research Concierge Desk" is to align the research workflow for busy clinicians, who require vital assistance in the technical aspects of their research. As well, the desk and its digital platform enabled us to assess research process workflow, such as research submission, data clinic requests, research progress tracking, and researcher satisfaction assessment. We present the initiation of the "Research Concierge Desk" as an innovative solution in hospital settings, outline the available resources, benefits, challenges, and propose areas for improvement. The experience gained from implementing the "Research Concierge Desk" model can greatly benefit other health centers in adopting a similar approach to develop enhanced services for clinical researchers.

Indigenous community engagement requirements for academic journals

This commentary emerged from an Indigenous research ethics and governance gathering and a scoping review completed by a diverse team of Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars, which includes some of the co-authors of this article. A lack of detail regarding whether and how community engagement was carried out and reported in the context of published Indigenous health research in the Atlantic region of Canada were identified. This commentary builds on this work as well as other published works that emphasize the need to further ensure that Indigenous research is community based if not community led. Moreover, this commentary lends support to important changes to journal submission requirements regarding Indigenous health research submissions recently made at the Canadian Journal of Public Health through the work of Senior Editor Dr Janet Smylie and colleagues.

PENGEMBANGAN KURIKULUM PAUD BERBASIS KEARIFAN LOKAL DALAM PERSPEKTIF P5 DI TK DIDAKTIKA USWATUN KHASANAH BEJI PURWOKERTO

This study aims to look at and analize the development of a local wisdom-based PAUD curriculum in the P5 perspective applied in the Kindergarten Didaktika Uswatun Khasanah Beji. Because not all educational institutions, especially Early Childhood Education, have been able to implement the PAUD Curriculum system based on local wisdom in accordance with the existing programs in P5. That way the author is very interested in being able to dig deeper into the application of the PAUD Curriculum that is implemented in the Kindergarten Didaktika Uswatun Khasanah Beji. The PAUD Curriculum that is implemented civers several aspects for the sake of improving the quality and quality of schools, especially the quality of child development. The results show that the implementation of the PAUD Curriculum based on local wisdom in the Kindergarten Didaktika Uswatun Khasanah Beji has many positive impacts for both school institutions, teachers and students, and the environment around the Kindergarten. Teachers or intructors become more professional in determining the concepts and structures of learning implemented in schools. In addition, students are also more skilled, independent, and synergized in instilling a social and religious spirit with noble character. The success of the quality and quality of schools can be seen from the developments that occur in children. The method in this study uses qualitative research methods. The type of research used is the phenomenological approach. Where the reseracher examines a phenomenon that is experienced in the real world, namely the application of P5 in the Didaktika Uswatun Khasanah Beji Purwokerto Kindergarten. Research is conducted to be understood and studied the truth. Submission of research into the discussion descriptively.

Pengaruh Budaya Organisasi Dan Gaya Kepemimpinan Terhadap Kinerja Pegawai Pada Dinas Pendidikan, Pemuda Dan Olahraga Kabupaten Trenggalek

The aim of this research is to determine and analyze the influence of organisasonal culture and leadership style on employee performance at Dinas Pendidikan Pemuda dan Olahraga Kabupaten Trenggalek. The research includes quantitative researce because the approach use research submission, process, hyopothesis, analysis, data analysis, data conclution and writing using aspectsof measurement, calculation, formulas and certaintyof numerical data. The researchsubject is employee Dinas Pendidikan Pemuda dan Olahraga Kabupaten Trenggalek. Data analysis using multiple linear regression formulas and hypothesis testing. The research result showed that it was achievedsimultanesly nilaiF hitung 36,181 bigger in comparatin nilaiF tabe l3.11and Nilai H0. This indicates that the research result reject Ho. This it can be concluded that organization culture and leadership style are positive and significant on employee performance.

Getting the Most Out of Your Medical Education Survey: 11 Tips From the Association of Pediatric Program Directors Research and Scholarship Learning Community

ObjectiveSurveys in medical education are commonplace. However, survey studies often lack scientific rigor. Well-designed surveys can ensure improved response rates and higher likelihood of dissemination. The purpose of this paper is to provide guidance for investigators planning to survey pediatric residency leaders MethodsWe examined the Association of Pediatric Program Directors Research and Scholarship Learning Community (APPD-RSLC) submissions, acceptances, and outcomes between 2015 and 2020. Additionally, we performed a literature review of survey design methods with the help of a research librarian. We established a list of tips and settled on the 11 included here by group discussion and consensus. ConclusionThese 11 tips provide specific recommendations for successful design of medical education surveys distributed by the APPD based on experience from current and former leaders of the RSLC and literature review in survey design and implementation.

Description of the scientific method for the preparation and validation of educational technologies in digital format: a methodological study

Introduction: the use of digital technologies constitutes a process that allows the dynamization of the care process, based on aspects related to criticality and creativity. It is emphasized that the development of technologies must, therefore, be inserted in a context for changes and innovation in response to the population’s health demand, and must follow a precise methodological path that goes from the construction to the validation of the appearance, content and effect . Objective: to describe the scientific method of elaboration and validation of educational technologies in digital format. Methods: methodological study, conducted according to the following steps: development of the research project and submission to the Research Ethics Committee; data collection; elaboration of the content, script, illustrations and layout of the booklet; and validation of educational technology. Results: the process of developing a technology requires methodological rigor, enabling coherence between theory and the purpose of the desired product, guaranteeing the internal quality of the developed technology. The use of educational technologies in health reinforces information, serving as a guide for guidelines regarding care and assisting in decision-making. Technological innovations in health, consists of a socio-technical process , permeated by professional and user reflections and experiences. Final considerations: educational technologies represent a potential resource for the development of health education practices, encouraging greater interaction between professionals and users, and an active attitude regarding self-care actions related to their health condition.

The 50th Anniversary of the Metaphorical Butterfly Effect since Lorenz (1972): Multistability, Multiscale Predictability, and Sensitivity in Numerical Models

Lorenz rediscovered the butterfly effect, which is defined as the sensitive dependence on initial conditions (SDIC), in 1963. In 1972, he used the term “butterfly” as a metaphor to illustrate how a small perturbation can lead to a tornado with a complex structure. The metaphorical butterfly effect, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022, is not precisely the same as the original butterfly effect with SDIC. To commemorate the 50th anniversary, a Special Issue was launched and invited the submission of research and review articles that can help to enhance our understanding of both the original and metaphorical butterfly effects. The Special Issue also sought recent developments in idealized Lorenz models and real-world models that address multistability, multiscale predictability, and sensitivity. The call for papers was opened 15 months prior to the completion of the Special Issue and features nine selected papers. This editorial provides a brief review of Lorenz models, introduces the published papers, and summarizes each one of them.

Gout, Hyperuricemia and Crystal-Associated Disease Network (G-CAN) Conference 2022: Early-Career Investigators’ Abstracts

The eighth annual international G-CAN research symposium was held in Alexandria, VA on 21st and 22nd October 2022. This hybrid meeting, live face-to-face and virtual live symposium, was attended by over 150 participants. Over 20 research abstract submissions were received from early-career investigators, for plenary oral and poster presentations. Here, we present the accepted, lightly-edited abstracts from the presenters consenting to have their materials published. We thank and congratulate the presenters for their work and contributions to the meeting.

The Effect of Taxpayer Awareness, Tax Sanctions And Tax Knowledge On Individual Taxpayer Compliance In Tangerang City With Tax Socialization As A Moderation Variable

This study aims to examine the effect of taxpayer awareness, tax sanctions, and tax knowledge on individual taxpayer compliance in the city of Tangerang with tax socialization as a moderation variable. Distribution of Google form questionnaires (primary data) with subjects, namely individual taxpayers in the city of Tangerang, and processed using Smart PLS by testing data validity using convergent validity and data reliability using composite reability &; Cronbach Alpha. The results obtained from this study by bootstrapping method are that Taxpayer Awareness and Tax Knowledge have a significant influence on taxpayer compliance while Tax sanctions do not have a significant effect on taxpayer compliance. Meanwhile, tax socialization cannot moderate the effect of taxpayer awareness, tax sanctions, and tax knowledge on taxpayer compliance. Submission of research to be input and information regarding taxpayers' views on individual taxpayer compliance in Tangerang where the government can also continue to improve and develop for state development to be more adequate and support taxpayers in implementing their taxpayer compliance. It must also be effective and efficient so that taxpayers feel facilitated in carrying out their compliance

Precarious inclusion: A collaborative account of casualisation and teaching leadership challenges at the post-pandemic university

PurposeThis paper emerged from the challenges encountered by both authors as academics during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. Based on their subsequent reflections on inclusion in education for minoritised academics in pandemic-affected institutional contexts, they argue that beyond student-centred foci for inclusion, equity in the field, is equally significant for diverse teachers. Working as tempered radicals, they contend that anything less is exclusionary.Design/methodology/approachUsing a reciprocal interview method and drawing on Freirean ideals of dialogue and education as freedom from oppression, the authors offer dual perspectives from specific positionings as a non-tenured woman academic of colour and a tenured staff member with a disability.FindingsIn framing this work dialogically and through Freirean ideals of conscientização, the authors' collective discussions politicise personal experiences of marginalisation in the teaching and researching of inclusion in education for preservice teachers, or more pointedly, in demonstrating the responsibility of all to orientate towards context-dependent inclusive practices. They assert that to enable educators to develop inclusion-oriented practice, the contextual frameworks need to ensure that they question their own experiences of inclusion as potentially precarious to enable meaningful teaching practice.Research limitations/implicationsIt offers perspectives drawing on race, dis/ability and gender drawing on two voices. The bivocal perspective is in itself limitation. It is also located within a very Australian context. However, it does have the scope to be applied globally and there is opportunity to further develop the argument using more intersectional variables.Practical implicationsThe paper clearly highlights that universities require a sharper understanding of diversity, and minoritised staff's quotidian negotiations of marginalisations. Concomitantly inclusion and valuing of the epistemologies of minoritised groups facilitate meaningful participation of these groups in higher education contexts.Social implicationsThis article calls for a more nuanced, empathetic and critical understanding of issues related to race and disability within Australian and global academe. This is much required given rapidly shifting demographics within Australian and other higher education contexts, as well as the global migration trajectories.Originality/valueThis is an original research submission which contributes to debates around race and disability in HE. It has the potential to provoke further conversations and incorporates both hope and realism while stressing collaboration within the academic ecosystem to build metaphorical spaces of inclusion for the minoritised.

Action learning and public health pedagogy: Student reflections from an experiential public health course.

Applied practice experiences are essential components of the Masters of Public Health (MPH) curriculum. The objective of this study was to examine students' perspectives on the skills and expertise they developed in an MPH course offering applied practice opportunities. Of 236 students who took the course from 2008 to 2018, email addresses were obtained for 212 and 104 completed the consent form. Following consent, reflection essays were de-identified and analyzed using a rapid qualitative analysis approach. The essays addressed students' learning experiences and application of the competencies for MPH programs set by the Council for Education in Public Health (CEPH). Deductive and inductive analytical lenses were used to identify the key lessons learned by each cohort of students. Semi-structured guides and matrixes for essay analysis were created using assignment instructions and CEPH competencies. Although the reflection paper assignment varied across the years, commonalities were observed in the student reflections. Key themes included turning theory into practice, navigating the complex environment of public health practice, skill building, critical self-reflection, challenges encountered, and elements that facilitated project success. Students reported developing practical skills, such as planning for independent research (e.g., preparing for institutional review board (IRB) submission, consulting with faculty and other experts), identifying realistic approaches for data extraction during chart reviews and analyses of electronic medical records, and disseminating findings for diverse stakeholders and audiences. Students also reported strengthening cross-cutting skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving that were useful for navigating power dynamics and balancing competing interests and expectations. Students explored their identity as public health professionals as they navigated the dynamics of public health practice. The applied practice experience served as a valuable tool for knowledge and skills acquisition. Moreover, it served as an opportunity for students to engage with the unique organizational cultures of their respective community partners and to deepen their understanding the complexities of conducting meaningful community-engaged research. This study demonstrates the utility of analyzing students' critical self-reflections as a tool for exploring learning experiences when training future public health professionals. The findings can help educators design future applied practice experiences.

Impact of COVID-19 on the Research Career Advancement of Health Equity Scholars from Diverse Backgrounds.

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly taxed scientific research and seems to have exacerbated existing inequities within the research field, particularly for early-stage investigators (ESIs). This study examines the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on traditionally underrepresented ESIs enrolled in an NIH-supported study evaluating the effectiveness of developmental networks, grant writing coaching, and mentoring on research career advancement. The survey consisted of 24 closed-ended (quantitative) and 4 open-ended questions (qualitative) linked to a participant's ability to meet grant submission deadlines, research and professional development disruptions, stress level, career transition level, self-efficacy and management of scholarly tasks, and familial responsibilities. Results from 32 respondents (53%) suggest that COVID-19 adversely impacted the continuity of research (81%) and grant submissions (63%). On average, grant submissions were delayed by 6.69 months (i.e., greater than one grant cycle). We also conducted additional analyses characterizing nonresponse and found that there were no significant predictors of nonresponse, indicating a limited threat to the validity of our findings. The disruption caused by COVID-19 to the careers of ESIs from underrepresented groups in the biomedical workforce has been profound in the short term. The long-term consequences to the future success of these groups are unknown but is a worthwhile area of research and potential innovation.
