The grass carp ( Ctenopharyngodon idella Val.) was introduced in Europe to improve fish production, but the possibilities for aquatic weed control are more emphasized now. From research in various countries it is concluded that the efficiency of the fish for weed control is high, that costs are low and that no severe side-effects are observed. The life possibilities for other fish species as well as water quality are mostly even ameliorated. It is expected, that in the near future the grass carp will be used to a greater extent in the control of aquatic vegetation.
