Computational Studies of Molybdenum-Containing Metal–Sulfur and Metal–Hydride Clusters

The development of transition metal clusters is an active area of research in inorganic chemistry, as they can be used as catalysts to perform chemically or biologically relevant reactions. Computational chemistry, employing density functional theory (DFT), plays a key role in rationalizing the electronic structure and properties of transition metal clusters. This article reviews recent quantum chemical studies of Mo3S4M clusters (M = Fe, Co, Ni), their CO- or N2-bound variants, and metal–hydride clusters. The ground state of the cluster systems was computed, and properties such as metal–metal bonding, orbital interactions, fluxional behavior of ligands, spectroscopy, and reaction mechanisms were rationalized and compared with available experimental results. Our research findings evidence that computational studies employing quantum chemical methods can guide experimental researchers to develop novel transition metal clusters for potential applications in catalysis.

The American Chemical Society’s Southern Arizona Local Section will host the Rocky Mountain Regional Meeting (RMRM) Oct. 20–23 virtually and in person in Tucson, Arizona. Kinetic study of removal heavy metal from aqueous solution using the synthetic aluminum silicate

One of the problems that most affect humanity today is the wastewater discharge into different water bodies. It was estimated that more than 7 million tons of wastewater are generated worldwide and are discharged into rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. Among the most dangerous wastewaters are those from inorganic chemistry research laboratories, mainly due to heavy metals. These problems have become a highly relevant topic, and numerous researchers have tried to design wastewater treatment systems that will deal more efficiently with heavy metals elimination. In this work, the synthesis, characterization, and evaluation of hydrated aluminium silicate were performed as alternative wastewater treatment from chemistry research and teaching laboratories. The compound obtained was Al_2O_33SiO_2H_2O, which was characterized by the determination of its physicochemical properties. These revealed a low density, very porous material, with low crystallinity, strong chemical resistance, a large surface area, and a high apparent ionic exchange capacity. Absorption kinetics studies of heavy metals in aqueous solutions, through more widespread models, have demonstrated that Al_2O_33SiO_2H_2O has excellent properties as absorbents of this material. The amorphous hydrated aluminium silicate achieves a decrease in the concentration of all the metal ions studied, reducing them to discharge levels permissible.

Synthesis and Use of a Nickel Oxidation Catalyst Using Glove Box Methods

The ability to perform air-free chemistry and catalytic reactions on an NMR tube scale are valuable skills in chemistry and not often included in undergraduate chemistry curriculum. This laboratory experiment provides students experience in synthesizing the metal complex, Ni(dcpe)(CH3CN)2(BF4)2 (dcpe = 1,2-bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)ethane), inside an inert atmosphere glovebox, performing a catalytic alcohol oxidation reaction on a microscale, and monitoring the reaction progress by 1H NMR spectroscopy. This activity has been employed in the Advanced Inorganic Chemistry course at Wabash College for three years. The reactions have proven to be reliable, and the students have gained valuable experience using advanced techniques common in inorganic chemistry research laboratories.

Molecular methods for assessment of non-covalent metallodrug-DNA interactions.

The binding of small molecule metallodrugs to discrete regions of nucleic acids is an important branch of medicinal chemistry and the nature of these interactions, allied with sequence selectivity, forms part of the backbone of modern medicinal inorganic chemistry research. In this tutorial review we describe a range of molecular methods currently employed within our laboratories to explore novel metallodrug-DNA interactions. At the outset, an introduction to DNA from a structural perspective is provided along with descriptions of non-covalent DNA recognition focusing on intercalation, insertion, and phosphate binding. Molecular methods, described from a non-expert perspective, to identify non-covalent and pre-associative nucleic acid recognition are then demonstrated using a variety of techniques including direct (non-optical) and indirect (optical) methods. Direct methods include: X-ray crystallography; NMR spectroscopy; mass spectrometry; and viscosity while indirect approaches detail: competitive inhibition experiments; fluorescence and absorbance spectroscopy; circular dichroism; and electrophoresis-based techniques. For each method described we provide an overview of the technique, a detailed examination of results obtained and relevant follow-on of advanced biophysical/analytical techniques. To achieve this, a selection of relevant copper(ii) and platinum(ii) complexes developed within our laboratories are discussed and are compared, where possible, to classical DNA binding agents. Applying these molecular methods enables us to determine structure-activity factors important to rational metallodrug design. In many cases, combinations of molecular methods are required to comprehensively elucidate new metallodrug-DNA interactions and, from a drug discovery perspective, coupling this data with cellular responses helps to inform understanding of how metallodrug-DNA binding interactions manifest cytotoxic action.

Cation effects on imidization of the hexamolybdate dianion via direct dehydration using the green combination of dimethoxypropane in dimethylsulfoxide

The imidization of hexamolybdate clusters with aromatic amines to produce hybrid organic-inorganic molecules is a rapidly expanding area of inorganic chemistry research due to the unique combination of structural and electronic properties. The earliest methods relied on the use of highly toxic isocyanates, while more recent developments have resulted following the discovery that dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) could be used as a dehydrating agent in acetonitrile under relative mild conditions. Unfortunately, DCC remains acutely toxic, and a new alternative system is reported here, with 2,2-dimethoxypropane (DMP) serving as the dehydrating agent in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). To outline the utility of this new approach, a study the kinetic effects of the quaternary ammonium counter-cation size on the rate and extent of imidization is presented. Overall, in the range from the tetraethyl- to the tetraheptyl-ammonium cations, the fastest and highest conversion rates are found with the bis(tetrabutylammonium) hexamolybdate.

Some nontoxic metal-based drugs for selected prevalent tropical pathogenic diseases.

Metal coordination of bioorganic compounds from both natural and synthetic products is not only gaining recognition in drug design and medicinal inorganic chemistry research, also they are being considered in the improvement of the bioactivity of drugs. What is done in this paper is a review of recent advances in the study of coordination-driven drug delivery, i.e., metal-based drugs (MBDs). The role of some late first row transition metal ions namely Fe, Cu and Zn in the biological activities of metallodrugs such as antimalarials and antimicrobials are highlighted. It was revealed that the interaction between these bio-essential transition metal ions and the organic drugs could enhance the diagnostic and therapeutic potentials of such formed drugs. This is because such interactions were proved to have improved the stability, bioavailability and cell delivery functions of the metallodrugs. Emphasizing on the challenge of metal ions toxicity, the researchers concluded on the need for the development of MBDs to combat drug resistant parasites without causing injury to normal cells. This would be of significance in addressing the concern World Health Organisation of ameliorating the increasing mortality rate in developing countries.

Synthesis and Characterization of Copper Complexes with a Tridentate Nitrogen-Donor Ligand: An Integrated Research Experiment for Undergraduate Students

An integrated laboratory experiment applying concepts and techniques developed in organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and instrumental analysis is presented for use by students interested in undergraduate research. The experiment incorporates some advanced laboratory practices such as multistep organic synthesis and purification, detailed reaction mechanism, air-sensitive metalation techniques, variable-temperature NMR experiments, cyclic voltammetry, and single crystal X-ray crystallography. Subsequently, students are presented with an experience that mirrors fundamental inorganic chemistry research practices found in laboratories throughout the world.

What Are the “Foundations of Inorganic Chemistry”? Two Answers

The 2008 American Chemical Society Committee on Professional Training (CPT) guidelines for bachelor’s degree programs specify that all certified majors take the equivalent of a one-semester “foundations of inorganic chemistry” course; an in-depth inorganic chemistry course is optional. The CPT provides a supplement to the guidelines listing inorganic topics that should be covered, but the list is too long to cover in one semester. We suggest that the list can be subdivided into two approximately equal subsets. The “aqueous and bioinorganic chemistry” subset meets the needs of most chemistry and related majors and does not require coverage of symmetry and molecular orbital theory. The “inorganic chemistry research” subset meets the needs of another set of chemistry majors and includes and builds on symmetry and molecular orbital theory. Modern Aspects of Inorganic Chemistry

THE presidential address by Prof. R. C. Ray to the Chemistry Section of the Indian Science Congress at Delhi dealt with some aspects of modern inorganic chemistry. After mentioning that research in inorganic chemistry had declined towards the close of the nineteenth century, mainly because of the very rapid development of organic chemistry and the rise of physical chemistry, he pointed out that there are very many new aspects of the subject now being developed.
