The Annual Meeting of the American Head and Neck Society (AHNS) was held May 11-13, 2002, during the Combined Otolaryngologic Spring Meeting in Boca Raton, Fla. At the business meeting, under the leadership of President Keith S. Heller, MD, 15 new active fellows, 10 candidate fellows, 3 corresponding fellows, and 1 associate fellow were introduced. The scientific program included 36 oral presentations, 51 posters, and 1 historical vignette. In addition, there were 2 panels that discussed “Surgery in Benign Thyroid Disease” and “Organ Function vs Organ Preservation.” Dr Heller introduced the guest of honor, Elliot Strong, MD, and Presidential Citations were awarded to Stephan Ariyan, MD, Nancy Leopold, Bhadrasain Vikram, MD, and Gregory Wolf, MD. Helmuth Goepfert, MD, was awarded a distinguished service award. Dr Eugene Myers delivered the Hayes Martin Lecture. Rabbi David Saperstein gave the Conley Lecture, “Bioethics and Medical Ethics in the 21st Century—A Moral Response.” A total of $205000 in research grants were awarded to promising young investigators. Research grant recipients included Drs Win Jen, Matthew Rontal, Richard Wong, and Robert Ferris. Paul Levine, MD, was inaugurated as the new president of the American Head and Neck Society. Other new officers elected included Jonas Johnson, MD, as president-elect; Patrick Gullane, MD, as vice president; and Ehab Hanna, MD, Carol Bradford, MD, and Bruce Campbell, MD, as fellows-at-large. William Lydiatt, MD, and Paul Friedlander, MD, were elected to the nominating committee and Mark Wax, MD, was elected to the finance committee. It was decided by the membership that the Archives of Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery will continue to be the official journal of the Society.
