Influence and collaboration in library and information science research: A university perspective

Objective. The objective of this study was to examine the influence and collaboration patterns within library and information science (LIS) research, with a particular focus on the contributions of universities over time. Design/Methodology/Approach. This study used bibliometrics and LIS network analysis to examine 14,517 articles indexed in Scopus from 1954 to 2023. The Bibliometrix R-package was used to identify publication trends, influential institutions, authors, and collaboration networks in the LIS field. Findings. The key findings indicated that Wuhan University was the foremost institution in LIS research, with notable contributions from Chinese scholars who were identified as the most influential authors in the field. The keywords “information science” and “information retrieval” emerged as common thematic areas, reflecting core research interests. The content analysis also revealed that LIS research had robust connections with fields such as physics, computer science, and information technology, underscoring an interdisciplinary trend. Originality/Value. This study offered original insights into the evolving landscape of LIS research, identifying both leadership in academic output and potential gaps in current research coverage. It underscored the necessity for future research to expand the scope of its database and refine keyword selection for more comprehensive representation. The findings contributed to the strategic development of LIS research and the fostering of international collaboration.

Considerations for enhancing participation and data accuracy in geospatial research in rural areas: experiences with PGIS in northern Malawi

ABSTRACT Rural environments are experiencing rapid changes that must be explored to understand, enhance, and facilitate positive changes and adapt to detrimental changes. However, the information researchers can obtain about the environment to identify effective management strategies for rural resources is hindered by several factors. Participatory geospatial research presents an approach that integrates local voices to map the facts and values of rural people and represent environmental changes. Here, we draw on more than six years of participatory geospatial research in rural northern Malawi to identify and present various considerations that participatory geospatial researchers and planners should be mindful of when working with rural people to enhance participation in research and improve spatial data accuracy. Based on experiences using various research methods and activities applied in several transdisciplinary collaborative research projects, we posit that rural geospatial researchers should keenly consider i) ethical issues concerning data collection, analysis, and representation, e.g. taboos and sacred spaces, ii) integrating local spatial ecological knowledge of people about the environment, and iii) economic conflicts and gender dynamics that tend to disempower and limit participation in research and affect data quality. Considering these would build rapport between participants and researchers to facilitate active participation and data accuracy.

Beamtimes and knowledge production times: how big-science research infrastructures shape nations’ domestic and international science production

Frontier scientific discoveries increasingly rely on big-science research infrastructures, such as supercolliders, synchrotron light sources, and space telescopes, whose construction and operation involve intensive international collaboration. This collaborative nature, however, presents a challenge in balancing national interests with the common good, particularly given the substantial fiscal investments involved. This study investigates the effects of one of China’s prominent big-science infrastructures, the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF), on the country’s production of science, differentiating between national and international scientific endeavors. Employing a rigorous difference-in-differences (DID) methodology, it evaluates SSRF’s effects on discipline-level production of publications by domestic researchers and those involving international collaboration. The empirical findings reveal compelling evidence that SSRF has significantly enhanced the production of high-impact national and international publications for disciplines reliant on the facility for experiments, particularly increasing the percentage of high-impact national publications. The findings also underscore the dual role of big-science infrastructures in fostering international research collaboration while simultaneously enhancing nations’ domestic scientific development and competitiveness. Additionally, the study provides valuable insights for research assessment and science policy discussions.

The Role of Traditional Medicinal Plants in Managing Malaria and HIV Co-Infection

Malaria and HIV co-infection presents a significant public health challenge, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, where co-morbidity rates are highest. Conventional therapies, including antiretrovirals and antimalarial drugs, are expensive and often associated with side effects that lead to noncompliance. Traditional medicinal plants offer an affordable and culturally accepted alternative. This review explores various plants used historically in the treatment of both malaria and HIV, focusing on their phytochemical constituents, mechanisms of action, and clinical efficacy. Plants such as Catharanthus roseus, Adenia venenata, and Morinda lucida have demonstrated antimalarial and antiviral properties, often through bioactive compounds like alkaloids and flavonoids. Additionally, integrating these traditional medicines with modern healthcare systems faces regulatory challenges, but there is promising potential for synergies in treatment efficacy. Further research, clinical trials, and interdisciplinary collaboration are necessary to validate these medicinal plants and improve the management of malaria and HIV co-infection. Controls on spatial variation in porewater methane concentrations across United States tidal wetlands

Tidal wetlands can be a substantial sink of greenhouse gases, which can be offset by variable methane (CH4) emissions under certain environmental conditions and anthropogenic interventions. Land managers and policymakers need maps of tidal wetland CH4 properties to make restoration decisions and inventory greenhouse gases. However, there is a mismatch in spatial scale between point-based sampling of porewater CH4 concentration and its predictors, and the coarser resolution mapping products used to upscale these data. We sampled porewater CH4 concentrations, salinity, sulfate (SO42−), ammonium (NH4+), and total Fe using a spatially stratified sampling at 27 tidal wetlands in the United States. We measured porewater CH4 concentrations across four orders of magnitude (0.05 to 852.9 μM). The relative contribution of spatial scale to variance in CH4 was highest between- and within-sites. Porewater CH4 concentration was best explained by SO42− concentration with segmented linear regression (p < 0.01, R2 = 0.54) indicating lesser sensitivity of CH4 to SO42− below 0.62 mM SO42−. Salinity was a significant proxy for CH4 concentration, because it was highly correlated with SO42− (p < 0.01, R2 = 0.909). However, salinity was less predictive of CH4 with segmented linear regression (p < 0.01, R2 = 0.319) relative to SO42−. Neither NH4+, total Fe, nor relative tidal elevation correlated significantly with porewater CH4; however, NH4+ was positively and significantly correlated with SO42− after detrending CH4 for its relationship with SO42− (p < 0.01, R2 = 0.194). Future sampling should focus on within- and between-site environmental gradients to accurately map CH4 variation. Mapping salinity at sub-watershed scales has some potential for mapping SO42−, and by proxy, constraining spatial variation in porewater CH4 concentrations. Additional work is needed to explain site-level deviations from the salinity-sulfate relationship and elucidate other predictors of methanogenesis. This work demonstrates a unique approach to remote team science and the potential to strengthen collaborative research networks.

Transnational experience exchange between countries towards speeding up EU renewable transition: example of Norway-Croatia

Abstract The RePowerEU plan aims to increase wind energy capacity to 480 GW by 2030, with 300 GW coming from offshore wind farms, to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Due to Croatia’s substantial dependence on nautical and coastal tourism, along with significant concerns regarding negative environmental impacts, the installation of offshore wind farms has not been previously considered. However, due to increased demand for renewables, the offshore energy potential resurfaced. The recent Action Plan for the Uptake of Offshore Renewable Energy Sources in Croatia (May 2023) estimated offshore wind potential at 25 GW and identified more than 29 000 km2 of area available for offshore renewables. Norway, with its extensive experience in offshore engineering and pioneering developments in offshore wind, is a suitable partner in joint innovation and a resource for tried and tested best practices. In this collaborative research, a review of relevant documents, research articles, and interviews with industry experts from both from Croatia and Norway was conducted to obtain a broader perspective of the implications of offshore development in Croatia. As an outcome of this preliminary research, the paper outlines the required evaluations in the Croatian context, in terms of the social, environmental, legislative, and technical aspects that are to be considered for large-scale integration of wind energy into the Croatian grid. It also identifies the necessary grid improvements to achieve a reliable and sustainable grid of the future.

Prevalence of Chagas disease among Latin American immigrants in non-endemic countries: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis

BackgroundChagas disease (CD), endemic in 21 Latin American countries, has gradually spread beyond its traditional borders due to migratory movements and emerging as a global health concern. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of available data to establish updated prevalence estimates of CD in Latin American migrants residing in non-endemic countries. MethodsAa systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, and LILACS via Virtual Health Library (Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde - BVS), including references published until November 1st, 2023. Pooled prevalence estimates and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using random effect models. Heterogeneity was assessed by the chi-square test and the I2 statistic. Subgroup analyses were performed to explore potential sources of heterogeneity among studies. The study was registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42022354237). FindingsFrom a total of 1,474 articles screened, a total of 51 studies were included. Studies were conducted in eight non-endemic countries (most in Spain), between 2006 and 2023, and involving 82,369 screened individuals. The estimated pooled prevalence of CD in Latin American migrants living in non-endemic countries was 3.5% (95% CI: 2.5-4.7; I2: 97.7%), considering studies in which screening was indicated simply because the person was Latin American. Per subgroups, the pooled CD prevalence was 11.0% (95% CI: 7.7-15.5) in non-targeted screening (unselected population in reference centers) (27 studies); in blood donors (4 studies), the pooled prevalence was 0.8% (95% CI: 0.2-3.4); among people living with HIV Latin American immigrants (4 studies) 2.4% (95% CI: 1.4-4.3) and for Latin American pregnant and postpartum women (14 studies) 3.7% (95 CI: 2.4-5.6). The pooled proportion of congenital transmission was 4.4% (95% CI: 3.3-5.8). Regarding the participants’ country of origin, 7,964 were from Bolivia, of which 1,715 (21,5%) were diagnosed with CD, and 21,304 were from other Latin American countries of which 154 (0,72%) were affected. InterpretationCD poses a significant burden of disease in Latin American immigrants in non-endemic countries, suggesting that CD is no longer a problem limited to the American continent and must be considered as a global health challenge. Bibliometric Analysis to Improve Combined Treatment Strategies for Glioblastoma in America

Introduction: Bibliometric analysis quantitatively examines scientific literature to extract insights. This article has conducted such analysis on glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) treatment articles. GBM, a prevalent brain tumor, is typically treated with surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Objectives: The article aimed to bibliometrically analyze articles discussing combined GBM treatment to identify impactful research areas and encourage collaboration. Materials and Methods: The study encompassed a comprehensive search in the Scopus database, spanning articles published from 1974 to 2022. Inclusion criteria encompassed research conducted in the Americas, both clinical and experimental. A total of 772 articles were collected and categorized based on their primary focus on combined treatment approaches. Results: Clinical studies constituted 52% of articles, suggesting a slight dominance. The analysis unveiled key research moments, including a 1998 focus shift and a pivotal 2005 study on temozolomide- radiation combination. Top journals, trends, and authors were identified, with the USA leading in contributions. Discussions: Despite high brain tumor incidence, research distribution discrepancy is concerning. Regional epidemiological studies have been endorsed. The dominance of US and German authors in GBM collaboration has raised equity issues due to budget and GDP disparities limiting Latin American representation. Conclusion: GBM research in the region is dominated by the USA, while contributions from Latin American countries remain limited. The absence of comprehensive epidemiological studies on GBM in Latin America is concerning, considering the evident impact of the disease in the region. This underscores the urgent need for increased research participation and collaboration to advance the understanding and treatment of GBM across Latin American nations.

Association of nirmatrelvir–ritonavir with post-acute sequelae and mortality among patients who are immunocompromised with COVID-19 in Hong Kong: a retrospective cohort study

The effect of nirmatrelvir-ritonavir on post-COVID-19 outcomes for individuals who are immunocompromised is understudied. We aimed to examine the association of nirmatrelvir-ritonavir with post-acute sequelae and mortality among patients who are immunocompromised and admitted to hospital with COVID-19. We did a retrospective cohort study using territory-wide electronic health records from the Hong Kong Hospital Authority and Hong Kong Department of Health. Eligible patients were adults aged 18 years or older who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 during the study period (March 11, 2022, to Nov 9, 2023) and were admitted to hospital with COVID-19. Four exposure groups were formed based on immune status (immunocompromised or immunocompetent) and nirmatrelvir-ritonavir status (yes or no). The primary outcome was post-acute inpatient death, starting from 21 days after the positive RT-PCR date. Standardised mortality ratio weighting with doubly robust adjustment was applied to control for confounders. Cox models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for the outcomes. Between March 11, 2022, and Nov 9, 2023, there were 89 772 individuals with positive RT-PCR tests, of whom 39 923 met eligibility criteria and were included in the study cohort. 19 914 (49·9%) of 39 923 patients were female, 20 009 (50·1%) were male and the median age was 75·0 years (IQR 63·0-85·0). 846 (38·2%) of 2217 patients who were immunocompromised and 14 586 (38·7%) of 37 706 patients who were immunocompetent were prescribed nirmatrelvir-ritonavir. Among the patients who were immunocompromised, those patients who received nirmatrelvir-ritonavir had significantly lower risk of post-acute inpatient death (HR 0·58, 95% CI 0·45-0·74; p<0·0001) and hospitalisation for acute respiratory distress syndrome (0·43, 0·20-0·90; p=0·024) than those who did not. A significant negative interaction was found between immune status and nirmatrelvir-ritonavir on post-acute all-cause hospitalisation (relative excess risk due to interaction -0·84, 95% CI -1·30 to -0·37; p=0·0004). Nirmatrelvir-ritonavir was associated with reduced risk of post-acute inpatient death among patients who were immunocompromised and admitted to hospital with COVID-19. However, the effectiveness of nirmatrelvir-ritonavir on post-acute hospitalisation outcomes was less pronounced in patients who were immunocompromised than in patients who were immunocompetent. Where is the Dust Source of 2023 Several Severe Dust Events in China?

Abstract Northern China was hit by 13 unprecedented mega dust events in spring 2023. However, a comprehensive understanding of the relative contributions of potential dust sources to dust concentrations in China remains elusive, threatening air quality, damaging ecosystems, and further complicating dust forecasting and warning efforts. The impact of five major Asian dust sources on China and its downstream regions has been accurately quantified using the Weather Research and Forecasting Model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem). Notably, dust particles originating from Mongolia play a crucial role in downstream air pollution. Approximately 56% (82.7 μg m−3) of the dust in North China originated from Mongolia, while Mongolia contributed nearly 51% (15.9 μg m−3) of the dust in the Korean Peninsula and surroundings. In southwest China, the prevalence of dust was predominantly attributable to sources within Inner Mongolia, China (46%). Due to geographical constraints, dust in the Tibetan Plateau mainly originated from dust sources in Xinjiang, China. Topographic blocking by the Tibetan Plateau and limitations on local dust emissions are further unfavorable to the long-distance transport of dust from South Asia to downstream regions. We also highlight the importance of variation in surface soil parameters in driving frequent dust events in spring 2023. Our findings emphasize the urgent need for collaborative research and policymaking to effectively address international dust disaster mitigation.

Interdisciplinary cooperation with solution-focused brief therapy to reduce job stress, burnout, and coping in Chinese nurses: A randomised controlled trial

BackgroundIncreased job stress and burnout are common among clinical nurses in China, reducing their work efficiency and nursing quality. Multiple studies have been conducted on brief interventions to reduce job stress and burnout among nurses. However, research has been hampered by a lack of psychological knowledge among nursing staff. AimTo assess a short-term intervention designed to improve nurses' coping strategies and to mitigate job stress and burnout through interdisciplinary cooperation DesignThis randomised controlled trial Settingsand participants: We randomly allocated 60 nurses working at a tertiary general hospital in a city in China to an experimental (n = 30) or a control group (n = 30). MethodsA collaborative research team comprising psychology and nursing specialists was established to conduct this study. The control group received routine psychological intervention, whereas the intervention group received a short-term interdisciplinary treatment approach that focused on cooperation. Chinese nurses’ job stressors, job burnout, and simplified coping style scales were used to evaluate both groups before and after the intervention. ResultsA comparison of the scores for job burnout, total job stress, and positive coping before and after the interventions revealed significant improvements in the test group, whereas the scores for emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation, and total work stress in the control group demonstrated statistically significant differences. No significant differences were observed in the scores for negative coping, personal achievement, and simple coping style between the test and control groups before and after the intervention. ConclusionsSolution-focused brief therapy implemented through interdisciplinary collaboration effectively enhances clinical nurses' active coping style, alleviates job stress and burnout, and offers valuable guidance for nursing management practices.

Association between aspartate aminotransferase to alanine aminotransferase ratio and mortality in critically ill patients with congestive heart failure

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a complex clinical syndrome that significantly impacts patient outcomes, especially in critically ill patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs). The aspartate aminotransferase (AST) to alanine aminotransferase (ALT) ratio (AST/ALT), has also been reported as a risk factor of cardiovascular diseases. However, few studies investigated the correlations between the AST/ALT ratio and ICU mortality in critically ill patients with CHF. This study investigates the association between the baseline AST/ALT ratio measured within the first 24 h of ICU admission and 28-day ICU all-cause mortality in critically ill patients with CHF. This retrospective cohort study included 4869 critically ill patients with CHF from the eICU Collaborative Research Database. Patients were categorized into tertiles based on their AST/ALT ratio: Tertile 1 (0.13–0.97), Tertile 2 (0.97–1.50), and Tertile 3 (1.50–5.89). Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to evaluate the association between the AST/ALT ratio and 28-day ICU all-cause mortality. Nonlinear threshold effects and subgroup analyses were conducted to assess the robustness of the findings. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were generated to compare survival probabilities across tertiles. Participants with higher AST/ALT ratios were older, had higher illness severity, and experienced worse clinical outcomes. In univariate analysis, the AST/ALT ratio was significantly associated with 28-day ICU mortality (HR: 1.24, 95% CI 1.13–1.37, P < 0.0001). This association remained significant in the fully adjusted multivariate model. The highest tertile of AST/ALT ratio was associated with a significantly higher risk of mortality compared to the lowest tertile across all models (HR: 1.48, 95% CI 1.07–2.03, P = 0.0162 in Model 4). A nonlinear relationship was observed, with a threshold identified at an AST/ALT ratio of 2.08. Below this turning point, the association remained strong (HR: 1.47, 95% CI 1.13–1.91, P = 0.0036), while above it, the association was no longer significant. Subgroup analyses revealed no significant interactions, indicating that the association between AST/ALT ratio and mortality was consistent across various patient characteristics. Survival analysis showed that patients in the highest tertile had the poorest survival outcomes (P < 0.0001). An elevated AST/ALT ratio within the first 24 h of ICU admission is independently associated with increased 28-day ICU all-cause mortality in critically ill patients with CHF.

The effects of refugees’ emotional tears on felt emotions and helping behaviors

Tearful faces are frequent in mass media portraits of refugees, but the consequences of such depictions for different kinds of intergroup helping remain poorly understood. While existing research suggests that individuals tend to be more willing to support those who display tears, the impact of emotional tears on tangible helping behavior, such as monetary donations, has not been examined. Understanding these dynamics could have significant implications for fundraising strategies employed by civil society organizations. Across three experiments relying on nation-wide panel data (N = 2647) and a quasi-experimental citizen science study (N = 191) conducted in the Netherlands, we tested the effects of refugees’ tearful (vs. non-tearful) expressions on people’s emotional reactions, intentions to offer refugees both dependency- and autonomy-oriented help, as well as actual helping behavior (i.e., money donated to an organization supporting refugees). Data from three online experiments unveiled a positive relationship between exposure to emotional tears and both dependency- and autonomy-oriented intentions to help, as well as donation behavior (in Study 4, two initiatives encompassing both dependency- and autonomy-oriented help), via felt compassion. Across all studies, the visual representations of refugees with tears consistently resulted in more helping intentions and donations indirectly via the perceived sadness of the refugee(s) and the subsequent felt compassion. Our findings illuminate critical questions regarding visual representations of refugees that might motivate solidarity. They also encourage future collaborative research at the convergence of art, social and emotion science, and activism. Our research also provides a platform for initiating fundraising campaigns aimed at generating resources to support initiatives focused on sharing the narratives of displaced individuals and empowering the refugee community.

Nationwide prevalence and geographic variation of idiopathic intracranial hypertension among women in the United States

The prevalence of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is increasing, but this has not been examined on a nationwide scale. Our objective was to determine the nationwide prevalence and geographic distribution of IIH among women in the U.S. Retrospective cross-sectional study using Medicaid claims and electronic health record data from the IRIS® Registry (Intelligent Research in Sight) and Sight Outcomes Research Collaborative (SOURCE). Female Medicaid beneficiaries aged 18-55 with IIH diagnoses and prescriptions for acetazolamide or methazolamide in 2018, excluding those with other causes of intracranial hypertension. We also calculated the proportion of female IIH patients in the U.S. who were insured by Medicaid by combining analyses from the IRIS® Registry and SOURCE. To calculate the total number of IIH patients in the U.S. and by state, we divided the number of Medicaid beneficiaries with IIH by the proportion of IIH patients insured by Medicaid. We then used census data from the 2018 American Community Survey to calculate prevalence. We compared the geographic distribution of IIH to obesity prevalence data from the 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, using the Moran's I statistic to test for spatial variation. In a validation study, we compared the calculated prevalence of IIH in Minnesota to similar data from the Rochester Epidemiology Project. Of 13,959 female Medicaid beneficiaries with IIH, 6,828 had a prescription for acetazolamide or methazolamide. In the IRIS® Registry and SOURCE, 25% of IIH patients were insured by Medicaid (95 % CI: 16-33%), suggesting that there were 27,312 women aged 18-55 with IIH taking acetazolamide or methazolamide in 2018 (6,828 / 0.25 = 27,312). Prevalence was 3.44 per 10,000 (95% CI: 2.61-5.39), and there was significant geographic variation (Moran's I statistic 0.20, P = 0.03) with higher prevalence in states where obesity was more common. The calculated prevalence of IIH in Minnesota was statistically equivalent to Rochester Epidemiology Project data (P < 0.05 for equivalence test). IIH affects 3.44 per 10,000 women aged 18-55 in the U.S., and there is significant geographic variation, some of which is explained by variation in obesity prevalence.

Incidence of Uveitis Following Initiation of Prostaglandin Analogs Versus Other Glaucoma Medications: A Study from the SOURCE Repository.

To evaluate the risk of incidence rates of uveitis among patients starting topical glaucoma therapy. Retrospective database study utilizing the Sight Outcomes Research Collaborative (SOURCE) Ophthalmology Data Repository. Adult glaucoma patients who were recently started on topical glaucoma therapy. Using data from 10 health systems contributing data to the SOURCE data repository, we identified all adult glaucoma patients who had been newly started on a topical glaucoma medication (prostaglandin analogues (PGAs), beta-blockers (BBs), alpha agonists (AAs), and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (CAIs)). Patients with pre-existing documentation of uveitis were excluded. Incidence of uveitis within 3 months of initiating therapy with different topical glaucoma medications. We included 67,517 patients who were newly prescribed a topical glaucoma medication. The mean age of the patients was 67.3±13.2 years and ∼59% were females. A total of 567 patients (0.87%) developed uveitis within 3 months of initiating the therapy. The incidence of uveitis was 0.32%, 1.95%, 1.63%, and 1.68% for users of PGAs, BBs, AAs, and CAIs, respectively. After adjusting for sociodemographic factors, individuals using topical BBs, AAs, and CAIs had significantly higher odds of developing uveitis versus those using PGAs (P<0.001 for all comparisons). The use of PGAs was not associated with higher odds of developing uveitis compared to other classes of topical glaucoma medications.

In academia, research collaboration plays a vital role in enhancing the research quality and enriching the academic profile of the authors. Recommending appropriate collaborators from a vast scholarly database, particularly for newcomers, poses a challenging cold-start problem. This study addresses a cold-start problem in peer recommendation, considering a dynamic coauthorship graph as a network structure of academic collaborators. As the coauthorship graph is quite large and complex, an efficient indexing method is essential for speeding up the initial search of similar coauthors. The study introduces an efficient Global Inverted List (GIL) for indexing research areas and active authors in the coauthorship network. An attribute-based search and filtering mechanism is proposed to identify relevant collaborators, followed by the application of k-means clustering and doc2vec metrics to rank and select top recommendations. A cold user is associated with attributes that identify coauthors with similar research interests. For each attribute of the cold user, the model searches the associated authors from the GIL. Further, two filtering approaches are applied to refine the retrieved author list. The first ensures that the authors have a significant presence in the specified research areas, whereas the second one helps avoid recommending authors with only superficial connections to the cold user. The model creates a feature matrix of filtered authors using the publication features of authors. The k-means clustering applied to the feature matrix generates k clusters, among which the model chooses only those with seed nodes i.e. the clusters which are having seed nodes are selected for further process. Selected clusters are ranked using doc2vec metrics, with the top-ranked cluster providing the final recommendation. The model recommends the top L members of the selected cluster, where L is the length of the recommendations provided to the new user. Our extensive experiments show the efficacy of the proposed model.

A Comprehensive Framework for Research-based Learning to Elevate Undergraduate Research

Objectives: This study proposes a comprehensive framework for Research-based Learning (RBL) that actively engages undergraduate students from diverse disciplines in collaborative research, and aims to enhance their problem-solving and research skills. Methods: RBL was introduced in the 2020-21 curriculum for six engineering branches at Thakur College of Engineering &amp; Technology (TCET), Mumbai, and was expanded to include three additional branches in 2023-24. It comprises four courses namely RBL1, RBL2, RBL3, and RBL4, spanning from the third to the final year. RBL activities were designed and implemented for over 4,300 students from 2020 to 2024. Findings: The outcomes of RBL activities were analyzed based on students’ achievements at the end of each semester. Application of the framework across different engineering branches for 4 years produced tangible outcomes in the form of an increase in in-house publications, participation in project competitions, and improved students' skills contributing to individual growth and institutional branding. The number of publications in TCET increased from 133 to 274 from 2022 to 2024. The total prize money received by students through participation in different project competitions amounted to INR 9.44 lakhs. The effectiveness of the framework is evaluated through online feedback surveys. A survey of 605 students consisting of 5 questions yielded 87.76% positive responses, while a survey of 83 teachers consisting of 9 questions showed positive feedback ranging from 90% to 96.4%. The successful research outcomes and positive feedback from students and teachers support the implementation of the framework in other institutions offering degree programs. Novelty: The RBL framework is integrated into the undergraduate engineering curriculum, providing time-bound achievements. It offers flexibility for online and offline use and is scalable for large groups of undergraduate students. Interdisciplinary Labor

This reflection explores the anxiety and physical sensations felt by some scholars when navigating interdisciplinary research. The author describes personally experienced physical and emotional challenges faced during collaborative research, emphasizing the lack of common language and knowledge, and arguing for greater acknowledgment of these embodied experiences. The aim is to foster more honest and productive interdisciplinary dialogues, highlighting the importance of addressing emotional and physical responses to being able to succeed in collaborative research settings.
