Urinary erythropoietin levels in normal, anaemic, polycythaemic, and uraemic subjects.

The erythropoietin content of 24 hour urine collections has been assayed in a number of clinical conditions and in five normal subjects Low erythropoietin levels were found in polycythaemia vera, anaemia associated with uraemia and rheumatoid arthritis. High levels were found in association with hypoxic polycythaemia and anaemia due to iron deficiency, blood loss and marrow hypoplasia. In addition significant quantities of erythropoietin were found in renal cyst fluid and in the isotonic extract of a uterine leiomyoma removed from patients with polycythaemia.

Hypernephroma arising in wall of simple renal cyst

An unusual case of hypernephroma arising from the wall of a simple renal cyst is presented. Despite prior controversy as to the existence of this entity continuity between normal and neoplastic cells lining the cyst wall was demonstrated thus confirming this lesion as a distinct entity. Furthermore, we wish to direct attention to the limitations of biochemical and cytologic analysis of renal cyst fluid in distinguishing benign and neoplastic lesions.

Remission of Erythrocytosis After Drainage of a Solitary Renal Cyst

ALTHOUGH it is clear that the erythrocytosis often found in patients with renal cysts is caused by excess production of an erythropoietic factor, it is not known whether this factor is actually produced by such cysts or released from some other tissue under stimuli related to these lesions. This report describes a patient in whom erythrocytosis remitted following surgical drainage of a solitary simple renal cyst. The renal cyst fluid, as well as samples of plasma and urine obtained before and after renal cyst decompression, was assayed for erythropoietic activity. Tissue culture media, in which a portion of the renal cyst wall had been incubated, were also assayed. A Comparison of Some Physical and Chemical Properties of Erythropoiesis-Stimulating Factors from Different Sources

Abstract In the present study we have compared some molecular characteristics of factors stimulating erythropoiesis found in the serum from patients with (a) aplastic anemia and (b) with erythremia due to anoxia, and in cyst fluid from patients with erythremia secondary to (c) a renal cyst and (d) a cerebellar hemangioblastoma. The biological activity of each of the four materials was found to migrate as an α2-globulin on zonal electrophoresis and was destroyed by treatment with sialidase and trypsin; this implies that these materials are mucoproteins with similar electrophoretic mobility. The erythropoietin activity was also completely neutralized by an antiserum made in rabbits to an extract of urine of anemic patients. This implies that these materials share common antigenic determinants. Thus, the erythropoiesisstimulating factors in human anemic and anoxic serum, cerebellar hemangioblastoma cyst fluid, and renal cyst fluid appear to be similar, if not identical. Therefore, the pathogenesis of the erythrocytosis seen in association with renal cysts and cerebellar hemangioblastomas appears to be due to the secretion of erythropoietin by these lesions.
