Evaluating the Performance of Remotely Sensed Precipitation Estimates against In-Situ Observations during the September 2014 Mega-Flood in the Kashmir Valley

In the present study, 4 gridded satellite precipitation data products for September 2014 flood, IMERG (Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM), GSMaP (Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation), TRMM-3B42 (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) and INSAT-3D-IMR (INSAT Multispectral Rain), were evaluated against the Indian Meteorological Department rain-gauge data from Sep-1st to Sep-7th 2014. Three evaluation indices; Correlation coefficient (CC), the Relative bias (RB) and the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient (NSC), were used to evaluate the robustness of satellite precipitation estimates with actual rainfall measurements. IMERG precipitation product has a near perfect positive CC and NSC values of 0.94 and 0.99 respectively; while the CC and NSC values are 0.7 and 0.5 for GSMaP_Gauge; 0.69 and 0.05 for INSAT-3D-IMR; and 0.9 and 0.8 for TRMM-3B42 respectively. The RB estimates indicate that IMERG, with a bias of 2%, is a best-fit dataset when compared to the surface rain-gauge observations. In contrast, TRMM-3B42, GSMaP and INSAT-3D-IMR have underestimation biases of −31%, −58%, and − 86% respectively. Analysis of the indices indicates that IMERG precipitation product performed better than other three satellite precipitation products owing to the closeness of values with surface gauge station data over Kashmir. Owing to scanty observation of rainfall in the region, IMERG has a potential to become a cost effective input data source for designing a flood early warning system (FEWS) for Kashmir. However, it is suggested to evaluate the robustness of different satellite-derived precipitation estimates compared to rain gauge observations by incorporating more extreme events from different mountain regions globally for establishing the best satellite derived precipitation product.

Inter-Comparison and Evaluation of Remote Sensing Precipitation Products over China from 2005 to 2013

Precipitation is a key aspect of the climate system. In this paper, the dependability of five satellite precipitation products (TRMM [Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission] 3BV42, PERSIANN [Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks] CDR, GSMaP [Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation] RENALYSIS, CMORPH [Climate Prediction Center’s morphing technique] BLD and CMORPH_RAW) were compared with in situ measurements over China for the period of 2005 to 2013. To completely evaluate these precipitation products, the annual, seasonal and monthly precipitation averages were calculated. Overall, the Huaihe River and Qinlin mountains are shown to have heavy precipitation to the southeast and lighter precipitation to the northwest. The comparison results indicate that Gauge correction (CMORPH_BLD) improves the quality of the original satellite products (CMORPH_RAW), resulting in the higher correlation coefficient (CC), the low relative bias (BIAS) and root mean square error (RMSE). Over China, the GSMaP_RENALYSIS outperforms other products and shows the highest CC (0.91) and lowest RMSE (0.85 mm/day) and all products except for PERSIANN_CDR exhibit underestimation. GSMaP_RENALYSIS gives the highest of probability of detection (81%), critical success index (63%) and lowest false alarm ratio (36%) while TRMM3BV42 gives the highest of frequency bias index (1.00). Over Tibetan Plateau, CMORPH_RAW demonstrates the poorest performance with the biggest BIAS (4.2 mm/month) and lowest CC (0.22) in December 2013. GSMaP_RENALYSIS displays quite consistent with in situ measurements in summer. However, GSMaP_RENALYSIS and CMORPH_RAW underestimate precipitation over South China. CMORPH_BLD and TRMM3BV42 show consistent with high CC (>0.8) but relatively large RMSE in summer.

On the Spatial and Temporal Sampling Errors of Remotely Sensed Precipitation Products

Observation with coarse spatial and temporal sampling can cause large errors in quantification of the amount, intensity, and duration of precipitation events. In this study, the errors resulting from temporal and spatial sampling of precipitation events were quantified and examined using the latest version (V4) of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission integrated multi-satellite retrievals for GPM (IMERG), which is available since spring of 2014. Relative mean square error was calculated at 0.1° × 0.1° every 0.5 h between the degraded (temporally and spatially) and original IMERG products. The temporal and spatial degradation was performed by producing three-hour (T3), six-hour (T6), 0.5° × 0.5° (S5), and 1.0° × 1.0° (S10) maps. The results show generally larger errors over land than ocean, especially over mountainous regions. The relative error of T6 is almost 20% larger than T3 over tropical land, but is smaller in higher latitudes. Over land relative error of T6 is larger than S5 across all latitudes, while T6 has larger relative error than S10 poleward of 20°S–20°N. Similarly, the relative error of T3 exceeds S5 poleward of 20°S–20°N, but does not exceed S10, except in very high latitudes. Similar results are also seen over ocean, but the error ratios are generally less sensitive to seasonal changes. The results also show that the spatial and temporal relative errors are not highly correlated. Overall, lower correlations between the spatial and temporal relative errors are observed over ocean than over land. Quantification of such spatiotemporal effects provides additional insights into evaluation studies, especially when different products are cross-compared at a range of spatiotemporal scales.

A Framework for Validation of Remotely Sensed Precipitation and Evapotranspiration Based on the Budyko Hypothesis

AbstractDespite offering spatially and temporally continuous measurements, the use of remotely sensed P and E in data‐scarce catchments is hindered by the lack of ground‐based measurements that enable comprehensive validation. This study proposes a novel validation framework that characterizes the combined error in the long‐term average estimates of remotely sensed P and E by making use of the Budyko hypothesis, specifically Fu's equation. A Root Mean Square Error (RMSE)‐based error metric that is capable of translating individual biases in P and E estimates onto the Budyko space is developed. A controlled sensitivity experiment using data from Model Parameter Estimation Experiment (MOPEX) catchments in the United States showed that the developed error metric is more sensitive to biases in P compared to biases in estimates of E. Validating the framework using combinations of different satellite‐based estimates of P and E revealed that the framework succeeds in arriving at the same conclusions as a traditional validation method with regards to the quality of P and E data sets. The framework offers a physically consistent, parametrically efficient basis for the selection of remotely sensed P and E data sets for hydrologic studies. Due to lack of consideration for catchment storage in the formulation of Fu's equation, the developed error metric is limited to long temporal time scales. As a result, the error metric is capable of characterizing the bias in P and E data sets and not the variance.

Effects of 4D-Var Data Assimilation Using Remote Sensing Precipitation Products in a WRF Model over the Complex Terrain of an Arid Region River Basin

Individually, ground-based, in situ observations, remote sensing, and regional climate modeling cannot provide the high-quality precipitation data required for hydrological prediction, especially over complex terrains. Data assimilation techniques can be used to bridge the gap between observations and models by assimilating ground observations and remote sensing products into models to improve precipitation simulation and forecasting. However, only a small portion of satellite-retrieved precipitation products assimilation research has been implemented over complex terrains in an arid region. Here, we used the weather research and forecasting (WRF) model to assimilate two satellite precipitation products (The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission: TRMM 3B42 and Fengyun-2D: FY-2D) using the 4D-Var data assimilation method for a typical inland river basin in northwest China’s arid region, the Heihe River Basin, where terrains are very complex. The results show that the assimilation of remote sensing precipitation products can improve the initial WRF fields of humidity and temperature, thereby improving precipitation forecasting and decreasing the spin-up time. Hence, assimilating TRMM and FY-2D remote sensing precipitation products using WRF 4D-Var can be viewed as a positive step toward improving the accuracy and lead time of numerical weather prediction models, particularly over regions with complex terrains.

NASA’s Remotely Sensed Precipitation: A Reservoir for Applications Users

Abstract Precipitation is the fundamental source of freshwater in the water cycle. It is critical for everyone, from subsistence farmers in Africa to weather forecasters around the world, to know when, where, and how much rain and snow is falling. The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory spacecraft, launched in February 2014, has the most advanced instruments to measure precipitation from space and, together with other satellite information, provides high-quality merged data on rain and snow worldwide every 30 min. Data from GPM and the predecessor Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) have been fundamental to a broad range of applications and end-user groups and are among the most widely downloaded Earth science data products across NASA. End-user applications have rapidly become an integral component in translating satellite data into actionable information and knowledge used to inform policy and enhance decision-making at local to global scales. In this article, we present NASA precipitation data, capabilities, and opportunities from the perspective of end users. We outline some key examples of how TRMM and GPM data are being applied across a broad range of sectors, including numerical weather prediction, disaster modeling, agricultural monitoring, and public health research. This work provides a discussion of some of the current needs of the community as well as future plans to better support end-user communities across the globe to utilize this data for their own applications.

Evaluation of Remotely Sensed Precipitation and Its Performance for Streamflow Simulations in Basins of the Southeast Tibetan Plateau

Abstract Four satellite-based precipitation products [TMPA real time (T-rt), its gauge-adjusted version (T-adj), Climate Prediction Center (CPC) morphing technique (CMORPH) real time (C-rt), and its gauge-adjusted version (C-adj)] were evaluated by a gauge-based synthesis dataset. Further, these products along with the CMORPH gauge–satellite blended version (C-ga), which is virtually C-adj in precipitation ungauged regions and is controlled by gauge analysis over regions of a dense station network, were intercompared with daily streamflow predicted by the distributed vegetation interface processes (VIP) model in the Lhasa and Gongbo basins of the southeast Tibetan Plateau. Results show these satellite-based products perform better in summer than in other seasons. Relative to the gauge-based synthesis dataset, for areal precipitation of the Lhasa basin from 2007 to 2010, biases of C-rt and T-rt are −10.49% and 157.88%, respectively. Biases of C-adj and T-adj are 3.42% and 24.12%, respectively. The C-rt bias is underestimation of the volume of observed rainfall correctly detected and overestimation of the volume of falsely alarmed rainfall, while T-rt bias comes from overestimation of the volume of observed rainfall correctly detected. Simulation efficiencies of stream discharges driven by T-adj and C-adj are better than those by T-rt and C-rt, which are consistent with the accuracies of these products. With benchmarked model parameters using the gauge-based dataset, C-adj presents well for simulation, while T-adj needs parameter recalibration to achieve good skills. Compared to T-adj and C-adj, better simulation could be obtained by C-ga in precipitation-gauged regions.

Validation of remote-sensing precipitation products for Angola

In situ ground observation measurement of precipitation is difficult in sparsely populated areas with trying access conditions, as is the case in many countries in Africa. The use of remote sensors installed in satellites can be very useful in overcoming this challenge, enabling the improvement of the spatial variability description of this variable and the extension of data series. A number of standard products offering precipitation estimates on a regular basis is now available and may be used for water planning and management purposes. The present study examines the performance of four of these products in Angola, namely the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3B43 (version 6), Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) Combined Precipitation Data Set (version 2.2), Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks (PERSIANN) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Prediction Centre (CPC) Morphing Technique (CMORPH), by comparing annual and monthly precipitation estimates with ground observation measurements. The data set of precipitation ground observation measurements was collected by the authors from different sources in Angola and Portugal, and is the result of an intense effort to gather hydrological records from Angola. It is believed to be one of the most complete data sets of monthly precipitation data from Angola. The four remote-sensing products are able to describe the main features of the spatial and temporal variability of annual and monthly precipitation in Angola. The results also show that the estimates from the TRMM are more accurate than the estimates offered by the other products, a conclusion which is in line with previous studies and which may be explained by the fact that this is the first product to incorporate measurements from precipitation radar. The estimation bias of TRMM is also more consistent which means that the results presented in the present study can be used in an operational environment to reduce the precipitation estimation error.

Spatiotemporal Disaggregation of Remotely Sensed Precipitation for Ensemble Hydrologic Modeling and Data Assimilation

Abstract Historically, estimates of precipitation for hydrologic applications have largely been obtained using ground-based rain gauges despite the fact that they can contain significant measurement and sampling errors. Remotely sensed precipitation products provide the ability to overcome spatial coverage limitations, but the direct use of these products generally suffers from their relatively coarse spatial and temporal resolution and inherent retrieval errors. A simple ensemble-based disaggregation scheme is proposed as a general framework for using remotely sensed precipitation data in hydrologic applications. The scheme generates fine-scale precipitation realizations that are conditioned on large-scale precipitation measurements. The ensemble approach allows for uncertainty related to the complex error characteristics of the remotely sensed precipitation (undetected events, nonzero false alarm rate, etc.) to be taken into account. The methodology is applied through several synthetic experiments over the southern Great Plains using the Global Precipitation Climatology Project 1° daily (GPCP-1DD) product. The scheme is shown to reasonably capture the land-surface-forcing variability and propagate this uncertainty to the estimation of soil moisture and land surface flux fields at fine scales. The ensemble results outperform a case using sparse ground-based forcing. Additionally, the ensemble nature of the framework allows for simply merging the open-loop soil moisture estimation scheme with modern data assimilation techniques like the ensemble Kalman filter. Results show that estimation of the soil moisture and surface flux fields are further improved through the assimilation of coarse-scale microwave radiobrightness observations.

Spatial and temporal patterns of remotely-sensed and field-measured rainfall in southern California

Quantification of spatial and temporal patterns of rainfall is an important step toward developing regional hydrological models. However, traditionally used rain gauge data are sparse and do not always provide adequate spatial representation of rainfall. In this study, we evaluated the daily 1-degree resolution remotely-sensed atmospheric precipitation data provided by Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) as an alternative to rain gauge-measured data. We analyzed data from the watersheds of southern California during the period of 1996–2003, focusing on the comparison of patterns of spatial, seasonal, and interannual rainfall dynamics. We used Empirical Orthogonal Functions to discern the patterns of precipitation and atmospheric circulation at different time scales, from synoptic to interannual. The correlation between the daily rain gauge-measured and remotely-sensed precipitation was poor and the resulting patterns of remotely-sensed precipitation are different than the temporal patterns of precipitation accumulated by rain gauges. These differences likely result from the fact that the precipitable water concentration measured by satellites is not always highly correlated to rainfall reaching the earth surface. Differences in the spatial resolution and coverage of the two methods and the differential influence of orographic effects and wind patterns on each also contribute to low correlations. We conclude that daily remotely-sensed precipitation produced at GPCP is not currently appropriate for use in assessing fine-scale hydrological processes in arid zones like southern California, and would not be a recommended surrogate for event-based hydrologic modeling. At the same time, the interannual variabilities of remotely-sensed and gauge-measured precipitation were highly correlated and the regional patterns of gauge-measured and remotely-sensed precipitation variability were similar; though the total precipitation estimated from satellite data was substantially lower than the gauge-measured data. Therefore, remotely-sensed precipitation data may be appropriate for use in long-term regional hydrologic or climate modeling focused on trends and patterns of rainfall in southern California. Both data sets showed that precipitation generally decreases from the northern to the southern watersheds. At interannual time-scale, the rainfall is related to the ENSO cycle. At synoptic time-scales, the rainfall patterns in southern California result from atmospheric moisture transport from the south–southwest.

Precipitation estimation over Sardinia from satellite infrared data

Three techniques for the estimate of rain rate from infrared satellite images have been examined and modified to be used over the western Mediterranean Sea. An attempt to optimize these techniques has been made by comparing the remotely-sensed precipitation with in situ data, obtained from the rain gauge network over Sardinia, for three different seasons of 1988. The results obtained so far clearly reveal the limitations of infrared remote sensing techniques when applied to precipitation retrievals. However, these results give the possibility of gaining some useful insights on the general problem and show that infrared remote sensing techniques can give acceptable area-time averages of precipitation which are useful for climatological studies.
