Spatiotemporal dynamics of meteorological and agricultural drought, part of Manbhum-Singhbhum Plateau (India): Four decades study using NASA POWER and MODIS data

Drought is an extremely hazardous situation that predominantly affects ecosystems, hydrological systems, and agricultural mechanisms in different pockets of the world. Management of water resources in dry and semi-arid environments has become a critical challenge in the last few decades. The principal objectives of this study are (i) to categorize the severity and frequency of drought events using the Reconnaissance Drought Index and Rainfall Deviation Index and ii) to evaluate the spatial extension of drought in particular drought times of severe and extreme droughts through Remote Sensing Drought Indices (RSDIs). This drought monitoring index is commonly used index for its high degree of resilience and sensitivity to droughts. The result shows that severe to extreme drought occurred in Bero, Tulin, Sirkabad, Manbazar and Bundwan which are 22, 28, 23, 14 and 25 months correspondingly based on RDI3 whereas RDI12 values indicated 26, 47, 42, 22 and 38 months in the study period (1981 to 2021). Bundwan area faced the most extreme drought occurrence in May month of 1996 with −3.58 values followed by Sirkabad, Bero, Manbazar and Tulin. Manbazar is going through severe to extreme drought months (for short time) whereas ‘extreme drought’ frequency (1.67 % to 1.05 %) is higher in the western part mainly in Jhalda I, Jhalda II, Bagmundi, and Arsha blocks of Purulia district (part of Manbhum Singhbhum Plateau). Additionally, the recurrence of ‘moderate drought’ is much greater in Balarampur along with some portions of Purulia I block. The whole study can be summarized as the northeastern portion being challenged with moderate or severe drought conditions while mild or severe drought is a considerable recurrence in the northern section. The outcome of this study will be helpful for local planners and management officials during implementation strategies related to water resource management.

Comparison of different drought monitoring indices in different climatic conditions in Iran

This study evaluates drought in different climate zones (Rasht, Shiraz, and Birjand) in Iran, using meteorological, agricultural, and remote sensing drought indices. For this purpose, NDVI, SAVI, and SR were extracted from Landsat images for 2002 and 2014-2020. Then, these indices were compared with the SPI, SPEI, and PDSI. The results indicate an increase in drought and a decrease in vegetation cover in the study area. In Rasht, where the vegetation cover is high, NDVI and SAVI were equal. In Shiraz and Birjand, where the soil effect is more significant, the distance between these two indices increased, which shows that SAVI performs better than NDVI for Shiraz and Birjand. The results also show that the drought severity could grow with decreasing rainfall and more water demand due to temperature increases, according to SPI, SPEI, and PDSI criteria. The comparison of drought indices showed that the highest correlations were between NDVI plus SAVI and SPI in Rasht, SR and SPEI in Shiraz, and NDVI and SPEI in Birjand. Based on the results of the Mann-Kendall test, the increasing trend of drought in the studied area is confirmed based on the SPI, SPEI, and PDSI. Therefore, it is suggested that remote sensing techniques combined with drought indices can be considered a suitable tool for optimal management of water resources, land use planning, and reduction of costs due to drought.

Evaluating established deep learning methods in constructing integrated remote sensing drought index: A case study in China

Agricultural drought seriously threatens the food and ecological security of most of the world’s developing countries. Data-driven integrated agricultural drought index with remote sensing provides an effective tool to monitor, evaluate, and predict the agricultural drought. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive analytical work on taking the most effective machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) methods to construct such integrated drought index. In other words, it is still unclear whether the recent DL methods can improve integrated drought monitoring as compared with the currently widely used ML methods. Therefore, we critically evaluated the performances of four representative DL methods (represents the four currently popular DL network types) i.e., Entity Embedding Deep Neural Network (EEDNN), One-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (1D-CNN), Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), and Self-Attention Mechanism (SAM) and three widely used tree-based ML methods i.e., Cubist, Random Forest (RF), and Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LGBM), through constructing a QuickDRI like integrated drought index (abbreviated as QuickDRI-China). About 30 years of meteorological data, 14 years of remote sensing data, and various biophysical variables in China such as land use/land cover, available water capacity, irrigated agriculture, elevation, and ecoregion were employed in this study. Results showed that the EEDNN performed best, followed by the RF and LGBM, and then the other methods including the currently wide used Cubist, according to the station accuracy evaluations, spatial description evaluations, and responses to specific drought event. The tree-based ML methods such as RF and LGBM are still competitive in constructing the integrated agricultural drought index at the current stage. However, the higher accuracy, the smoother spatial description, and the more responsive ability of the EEDNN demonstrate great potential of DL methods. The future integrated agricultural drought monitoring with remote sensing should develop a specialized DL network for heterogeneous agricultural drought features.

Drought in Shanxi Province Based on Remote Sensing Drought Index Analysis of Spatial and Temporal Variation Characteristics

Drought is a natural disaster with long duration and which causes great harm. Studying the characteristics of drought evolution in Shanxi Province can grasp the regularity of drought occurrence and provide a basis for drought prevention and resistance. This study utilizes MODIS products to analyze and quantify the extent of drought in a specific area. The study calculates several indices, including the Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI), Vegetation Supply Water Index (VSWI), and Temperature Vegetation Dryness Index (TVDI), using variables such as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Land Surface Temperature (LST), Evapotranspiration (ET), and Potential Evapotranspiration (PET). Additionally, three drought indices are analyzed for correlation with the self-calibrated Palmer Drought Severity Index (sc-PDSI), and the most suitable drought index is selected through validation with typical drought events. Finally, the selected indices are used to investigate the spatiotemporal characteristics of drought in the study area from 2001 to 2020. The results show: (1) CWSI and sc-PDSI have a strong correlation both in terms of time and spatial analysis. Furthermore, CWSI has been shown to be more effective in monitoring significant drought events. (2) The multi-year mean values of CWSI range from 0.71 to 0.85, with a significant degree of spatial heterogeneity. In the study area, the percentage of the area affected by different levels of drought is in the following order: moderate drought > severe drought > mild drought > no drought. (3) The trend of CWSI changes shows that the drought situation in Shanxi Province has been alleviated from 2001 to 2020, and the overall spatial distribution indicates that the degree of drought alleviation in the southern region is greater than that in the northern region. The turning point from drought to wetness in the study area was in 2011, showing the overall characteristic of “dry in the north and wet in the south”.

Drought Monitoring Using Landsat Derived Indices and Google Earth Engine Platform: A Case Study from Al-Lith Watershed, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Precise assessment of drought and its impact on the natural ecosystem is an arduous task in regions with limited climatic observations due to sparsely distributed in situ stations, especially in the hyper-arid region of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Therefore, this study investigates the application of remote sensing techniques to monitor drought and compare the remote sensing-retrieved drought indices (RSDIs) with the standardized meteorological drought index (Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index, SPEI) during 2001–2020. The computed RSDIs include Vegetation Condition Index (VCI), Temperature Condition Index (TCI), and Vegetation Health Index (VHI), which are derived using multi-temporal Landsat 7 ETM+, Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS satellites, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. Pearson correlation coefficient (CC) is used to find the extent of agreement between the SPEI and RSDIs. The comparison showed CC values of 0.74, 0.67, 0.57, and 0.47 observed for VHI/SPEI-12, VHI/SPEI-6, VHI/SPEI-3, and VHI/SPEI-1, respectively. Comparatively low agreement was observed between TCI and SPEI with CC values of 0.60, 0.61, 0.42, and 0.37 observed for TCI/SPEI-12, TCI/SPEI-6, TCI/SPEI-3, and TCI/SPEI-1. A lower correlation with CC values of 0.53, 0.45, 0.33 and 0.24 was observed for VCI/SPEI-12, VCI/SPEI-6, VCI/SPEI-3, and VCI/SPEI-1, respectively. Overall, the results suggest that VHI and SPEI are better correlated drought indices and are suitable for drought monitoring in the data-scarce hyper-arid regions. This research will help to improve our understanding of the relationships between meteorological and remote sensing drought indices.

A comprehensive drought index based on remote sensing data and nested copulas for monitoring meteorological and agroecological droughts: A case study on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

This study proposes a new comprehensive remote sensing drought index (CRSDI) based on the nested copulas of remotely sensed precipitation, vegetation index, and land surface temperature that represent water availability, vegetation health, and disturbance impact, respectively, for monitoring meteorological and agroecological droughts. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) is chosen as a case study to test the CRSDI and investigate drought changes and their impacts on vegetation. The results show that CRSDI can effectively monitor the propagation processes and characteristics of meteorological and agroecological droughts. Drought conditions on the QTP are overall relieved from 2000 to 2020, while these changes show an apparent spatial variability, with a general drying (wetting) trend in the north (south). Moreover, vegetation response to drought is different among different vegetation types, with shrubland having a stronger response, followed by cropland, grassland, and forestland. Clearly, CRSDI is valuable for large-scale drought monitoring and assessment.

Drought Monitoring and Performance Evaluation Based on Machine Learning Fusion of Multi-Source Remote Sensing Drought Factors

Drought is an extremely dangerous natural hazard that causes water crises, crop yield reduction, and ecosystem fires. Researchers have developed many drought indices based on ground-based climate data and various remote sensing data. Ground-based drought indices are more accurate but limited in coverage; while the remote sensing drought indices cover larger areas but have poor accuracy. Applying data-driven models to fuse multi-source remote sensing data for reproducing composite drought index may help fill this gap and better monitor drought in terms of spatial resolution. Machine learning methods can effectively analyze the hierarchical and non-linear relationships between the independent and dependent variables, resulting in better performance compared with traditional linear regression models. In this study, seven drought impact factors from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite sensor, Global Precipitation Measurement Mission (GPM), and Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) were used to reproduce the standard precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) for Shandong province, China, from 2002 to 2020. Three machine learning methods, namely bias-corrected random forest (BRF), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and support vector machines (SVM) were applied as regression models. Then, the best model was used to construct the spatial distribution of SPEI. The results show that the BRF outperforms XGBoost and SVM in SPEI estimation. The BRF model can effectively monitor drought conditions in areas without ground observation data. The BRF model provides comprehensive drought information by producing a spatial distribution of SPEI, which provides reliability for the BRF model to be applied in drought monitoring.

Responses of the Remote Sensing Drought Index with Soil Information to Meteorological and Agricultural Droughts in Southeastern Tibet

The Temperature–Vegetation–Precipitation–Drought Index (TVPDI) has a good performance in drought monitoring in China. However, different regions have different responses to droughts due to terrain differences. In southeastern Tibet, the drought monitoring capacity of some drought indices without soil information has to be assessed on account of the poor sensitivity between temperature and soil humidity. Therefore, soil moisture was added to calculate a new drought index based on TVPDI in southeastern Tibet, named the Temperature–Vegetation–Soil-Moisture–Precipitation–Drought Index (TVMPDI). Then, the TVMPDI was validated by using the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and other remote sensing drought indices, including the Vegetation Health Index (VHI) and Scale Drought Conditions Index (SDCI), during the growing seasons of 2003–2018. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and SPEI were used to represent meteorological drought and Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) was used to represent agricultural drought. The relation between TVMPDI and these drought indices was compared. Finally, the time trends of TVMPDI were also analyzed. The relation coefficients of TVMPDI and SPEI were above 0.5. The correlations between TVMPDI and drought indices, including the Vegetation Health Index (VHI) and Scale Drought Conditions Index (SDCI), also had a good performance. The correlation between the meteorological drought indices (SPI and SPEI) and TVMPDI were not as good as for the TVPDI, but the temporal correlation between the TVMPDI and GPP was greater than that between the TVPDI and GPP. This indicates that the TVMPDI is more suitable for monitoring agricultural drought than the TVPDI. In addition, historical drought monitoring had values that were consistent with those of the actual situation. The trend of the TVMPDI showed that drought in the study area was alleviated from 2003 to 2018. Furthermore, GPP was negatively correlated with SPEI (r = −0.4) and positively correlated with Soil Moisture (SM) drought index (TVMPDI, SMCI) (r = 0.4) in the eastern part of the study area, which suggests that SM, rather than precipitation, could promote the growth of vegetation in the region. A correct understanding of the role of soil information in drought comprehensive indices may monitor meteorological drought and agricultural drought more accurately.

Multisource data-based integrated drought monitoring index: Model development and application

In this study, we proposed a new integrated remote sensing drought monitoring indices, i.e. Multiple Remote Sensing Drought Index integrated by Principal Component Analysis (PSDI), Multiple Remote Sensing Drought Index integrated by multiple linear regression (MRSDI) and Multiple Remote Sensing drought index integrated by gradient boosting method (GBMDI), based on the Precipitation Condition Index (PCI), Temperature Condition Index (TCI), Vegetation Condition Index (VCI), and Soil Moisture Condition Index (SMCI). The monitoring performance of PSDI, MRSDI and GBMDI was compared and verified based on the real-world observed droughts during 2002 to 2016. We also evidenced drought monitoring performance of the PSDI MRSDI and GBMDI by comparison between PSDI, MRSDI, GBMDI and SPEI, SPI and PDSI based on the in situ observed meteorological data. We found that the spatiotemporal characteristics of droughts monitored by the PSDI, MRSDI and GBMDI were generally in good agreement with those by the SPI and SPEI. The GBMDI performs better than PSDI and MRSDI in describing drought processes and spatial patterns of droughts of different drought intensities. Comparison between the real-world observed drought-affected croplands and those monitored by PSDI, MRSDI and GBMDI indicated better drought monitoring performance of GBMDI than PSDI and MRSDI in monitoring droughts across widespread drought-affected regions. Besides, the trend of GBMDI is in good agreement with standardized crop yield. Therefore GBMDI should be the first choice in drought monitoring practice. The GBMDI developed in this study can help to provide an alternative drought monitoring index for large-scale drought monitoring across China and also in other regions of the globe.

Reconstruction and application of the temperature-vegetation-precipitation drought index in mainland China based on remote sensing datasets and a spatial distance model

In recent years, remote sensing drought monitoring indices have been gradually developed and have been widely used for global or regional drought monitoring due to their strong drought-monitoring capabilities and easy implementation advantages. However, some defects of remote sensing drought indices stand to be improved due to certain errors in the inversion of surface characteristics by remote sensing datasets. The temperature-vegetation-precipitation drought index (TVPDI) was taken as the research object, and the leaf area index (LAI), the difference between the land surface temperature (LST) and monthly average temperature, and Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) precipitation data were selected instead of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), LST and tropical rainfall measuring mission (TRMM) data to improve TVPDI. The improved remote sensing drought index was named the improved temperature-vegetation-precipitation drought index (iTVPDI). The drought-monitoring accuracy of iTVPDI was verified by the gross primary productivity (GPP), soil moisture, and crop yield per unit. The drought-monitoring ability of iTVPDI was verified with traditional drought indices, including the standardized precipitation index (SPI), standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI), Palmer drought severity index (PDSI), temperature-vegetation drought index (TVDI), drought severity index (DSI) and crop water stress index (CWSI). The drought-monitoring accuracy of iTVPDI was verified by selecting sample areas. iTVPDI was applied to monitor drought in mainland China over the 2001–2020 period and obtained four main results. First, the correlation analyses of iTVPDI and TVPDI with GPP, crop yield per unit area, and soil moisture showed that iTVPDI had a stronger monitoring ability in Northeast, North, and Southwest China; the R2 value obtained with soil moisture was 0.62 (p < 0.05), and this value was higher than that of TVPDI. Then, the correlation analyses of iTVPDI and TVPDI with SPI, SPEI, PDSI, CWSI, DSI and TVDI showed that the correlation coefficients of iTVPDI and TVPDI with these six indicators were basically consistent, which indicated that the drought-monitoring capability of iTVPDI was consistent with that of TVPDI. In local areas such as the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in China, the monitoring ability of iTVPDI was stronger than that of TVPDI. Third, through the sample area analysis, iTVPDI was found to moderate the NDVI-characterized vegetation factors in TVPDI in low-vegetation-cover areas affected by soil disturbances and in high-vegetation-cover areas affected by oversaturation. Finally, the results obtained from the application of iTVPDI in mainland China showed that during the warm-dry to warm-wet climate transition between 2001 and 2021, in 2010 and 2018, and in other special drought years, iTVPDI had the best response.

Modified drought severity index: Model improvement and its application in drought monitoring in China

With advancement of remote sensing techniques, remote-sensing drought indices have been widely used for drought monitoring. However, the monitoring accuracy of a specific drought index regionally varies. Considering the deficiency of existing drought indices in reflecting vegetation growth, here we propose a Modified Drought Severity Index (MDSI) with local optimization method constrained by the inclusion of vegetation greenness, crop water shortage, canopy temperature, vegetation structure, and physiological status. We evaluated drought monitoring performance of MDSI across China, and detected high correlations between MDSI and soil moisture (SM), Standardized Precipitation Index at a 3-month scale (SPI-3), actual drought-affected areas (ADA), evidencing higher drought performance of MDSI when compared to 8 widely-used drought indices. Besides, MDSI performed better in monitoring agricultural drought. We found amplifying short-term drought intensity in the future. Ecological restoration and cultivated land reclamation can alleviate drought effects. However, urbanization can potentially intensify droughts. How to adapt human behavior to droughts is a challenging task.

Prospective analysis of spatial heterogeneity influence on the concordance of remote sensing drought indices: a case of semi-arid agrosystems in Morocco (Moulouya and Tensift watersheds)

Several drought indices are commonly used to quantify the severity and magnitude of agricultural drought. A comprehensive assessment of temporal and spatial convergences is important. This study evaluates the spatio-temporal concordances of eight drought indices, between October and April, over the period 2003–2021 under the semi-arid conditions of two watersheds in Morocco. These include three monovariate, two bivariate and three composite indices. Taylor diagram, linear regression and Random Forest (RF) clustering were used to evaluate and compare the overall performance of the indices. The results indicate that spatio-temporal variability and spatial heterogeneity of the different agrosystems have little influence on the concordances of composite indices while TCI and VCI have a variable spatio-temporal concordance depending on the spatial extent considered. Nevertheless, depending on the spatial extent considered and the agroclimatic characteristics of each agrosystem, the seasonal correlations between the composite indices and precipitation anomalies, net primary productivity and cereal yield anomalies vary from 0.52 to 0.79, 0.23 to 0.78 and from 0.33 to 0.73, respectively. The correlations between the simple indices and precipitation anomalies, net primary productivity, and cereal yield anomalies range, respectively, from 0.33 to 68 0.13 to 0.72, and from 0 to 0.84. In general, the composite indices showed the best agreement between them and reference indicators but the VCI seems better suited for the assessment of the seasonal profitability of studied agrosystems.

Drought Monitoring over Yellow River Basin from 2003–2019 Using Reconstructed MODIS Land Surface Temperature in Google Earth Engine

Drought is one of the most complex and least-understood environmental disasters that can trigger environmental, societal, and economic problems. To accurately assess the drought conditions in the Yellow River Basin, this study reconstructed the Land Surface Temperature (LST) using the Annual Temperature Cycle (ATC) model and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The Temperature Condition Index (TCI), Vegetation Condition Index (VCI), Vegetation Health Index (VHI), and Temperature-Vegetation Drought Index (TVDI), which are four typical remote sensing drought indices, were calculated. Then, the air temperature, precipitation, and soil moisture data were used to evaluate the applicability of each drought index to different land types. Finally, this study characterized the spatial and temporal patterns of drought in the Yellow River Basin from 2003 to 2019. The results show that: (1) Using the LST reconstructed by the ATC model to calculate the drought index can effectively improve the accuracy of drought monitoring. In most areas, the reconstructed TCI, VHI, and TVDI are more reliable for monitoring drought conditions than the unreconstructed VCI. (2) The four drought indices (TCI, VCI, VH, TVDI) represent the same temporal and spatial patterns throughout the study area. However, in some small areas, the temporal and spatial patterns represented by different drought indices are different. (3) In the Yellow River Basin, the drought level is highest in the northwest and lowest in the southwest and southeast. The dry conditions in the Yellow River Basin were stable from 2003 to 2019. The results in this paper provide a basis for better understanding and evaluating the drought conditions in the Yellow River Basin and can guide water resources management, agricultural production, and ecological protection of this area.

Cereal Yield Forecasting with Satellite Drought-Based Indices, Weather Data and Regional Climate Indices Using Machine Learning in Morocco

Accurate seasonal forecasting of cereal yields is an important decision support tool for countries, such as Morocco, that are not self-sufficient in order to predict, as early as possible, importation needs. This study aims to develop an early forecasting model of cereal yields (soft wheat, barley and durum wheat) at the scale of the agricultural province considering the 15 most productive over 2000–2017 (i.e., 15 × 18 = 270 yields values). To this objective, we built on previous works that showed a tight linkage between cereal yields and various datasets including weather data (rainfall and air temperature), regional climate indices (North Atlantic Oscillation in particular), and drought indices derived from satellite observations in different wavelengths. The combination of the latter three data sets is assessed to predict cereal yields using linear (Multiple Linear Regression, MLR) and non-linear (Support Vector Machine, SVM; Random Forest, RF, and eXtreme Gradient Boost, XGBoost) machine learning algorithms. The calibration of the algorithmic parameters of the different approaches are carried out using a 5-fold cross validation technique and a leave-one-out method is implemented for model validation. The statistical metrics of the models are first analyzed as a function of the input datasets that are used, and as a function of the lead times, from 4 months to 2 months before harvest. The results show that combining data from multiple sources outperformed models based on one dataset only. In addition, the satellite drought indices are a major source of information for cereal prediction when the forecasting is carried out close to harvest (2 months before), while weather data and, to a lesser extent, climate indices, are key variables for earlier predictions. The best models can accurately predict yield in January (4 months before harvest) with an R2 = 0.88 and RMSE around 0.22 t. ha−1. The XGBoost method exhibited the best metrics. Finally, training a specific model separately for each group of provinces, instead of one global model, improved the prediction performance by reducing the RMSE by 10% to 35% depending on the provinces. In conclusion, the results of this study pointed out that combining remote sensing drought indices with climate and weather variables using a machine learning technique is a promising approach for cereal yield forecasting.

Deriving drought indices from MODIS vegetation indices (NDVI/EVI) and Land Surface Temperature (LST): Is data reconstruction necessary?

Droughts pose significant economic and ecological concerns, and considering climate change projections, timely monitoring and early warning based on satellite observations must be realized at regional to global scales. Nevertheless, whether data reconstruction is necessary to produce high-quality satellite-based time series data for drought monitoring and the data reconstruction approaches to be applied, if necessary, remain unclear. We attempted to fill this knowledge gap by investigating three widely used data reconstruction approaches, i.e., the Savitzky–Golay filter, harmonic analysis of time series (HANTS) and Whittaker Smoother, across the Lancang–Mekong river basin through the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) MOD13Q1 and MOD11A2 products for 2001–2018 and Google Earth Engine cloud platform. Several remote sensing drought indices based on the unreconstructed and reconstructed vegetation indices (VIs) and Land Surface Temperature (LST) were retrieved for basin-wide drought detection. The performance of the examined reconstruction approaches was evaluated using three statistical indices (coefficient of determination (R2), standard deviation of bias (BIAS(std)) and mean squared error (MSE)), spatial consistency with the reference dataset and capability to characterize the drought events. Data reconstruction considerably enhanced the drought index performances for drought detection; however, reconstruction was not necessary in all situations. The reconstructed drought indices exhibited higher R2 values (by 10.6–10.8%), lower BIAS(std) values (by −1.7– −12.5%), and smaller MSE values (by −5.8– −13.4%) compared to those of unreconstructed indices. For most evaluation indicators, HANTS outperformed the other methods, and Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) and Vegetation Health Index (VHI) outperformed the other drought indices. The findings highlight the importance of data reconstruction to detect and characterize drought events and the dependency of the performance of reconstruction methods on drought indices and evaluation metrics when using MODIS time series data.

Comparison of various drought indices for assessing drought status of the Northern Mekerra watershed, Northwest of Algeria

Drought is a slow-onset, creeping natural hazard and a recurrent phenomenon in the arid and semi-arid region of the Mekerra watershed. Numerous drought indices have been used in different countries to implement drought mapping and monitoring of water resources management. This investigation proves meteorological drought index combined with remote sensing drought index, but had unsteady spatial and temporal variation. The results highlight that droughts occur in semi-arid climatic region of Sidi Bel Abbes at the Northern part of the watershed. The various drought indices differ in their detection and classification of this extreme climatic event in the study area. There is high correlation (r > 0.68) among the eight indices, with PD (Precipitation deciles), DI (Deciles Index), and PNI (Percent of Normal Index) showing the highest relationship to SPI (r = 0.95 and r = 0.99 respectively). The differences observed among the drought indices in detecting drought events in the study area can be reduced by using multiple drought indices in addition to the use of SPI (Standardized Precipitation Index) in drought assessments especially at the area of Sidi Bel Abbes since technological advancement in drought monitoring software’s has made it easier. In addition, it is worthwhile to investigate on why drought detection varies with indices. Furthermore, considering the advantages and disadvantages of the mentioned drought predictors in this study area will enhance the understanding of vegetation responses to drought threatens.

Multi-sensor remote sensing for drought characterization: current status, opportunities and a roadmap for the future

Satellite based remote sensing offers one of the few approaches able to monitor the spatial and temporal development of regional to continental scale droughts. A unique element of remote sensing platforms is their multi-sensor capability, which enhances the capacity for characterizing drought from a variety of perspectives. Such aspects include monitoring drought influences on vegetation and hydrological responses, as well as assessing sectoral impacts (e.g., agriculture). With advances in remote sensing systems along with an increasing range of platforms available for analysis, this contribution provides a timely and systematic review of multi-sensor remote sensing drought studies, with a particular focus on drought related datasets, drought related phenomena and mechanisms, and drought modeling. To explore this topic, we first present a comprehensive summary of large-scale remote sensing datasets that can be used for multi-sensor drought studies. We then review the role of multi-sensor remote sensing for exploring key drought related phenomena and mechanisms, including vegetation responses to drought, land-atmospheric feedbacks during drought, drought-induced tree mortality, drought-related ecosystem fires, post-drought recovery and legacy effects, flash drought, as well as drought trends under climate change. A summary of recent modeling advances towards developing integrated multi-sensor remote sensing drought indices is also provided. We conclude that leveraging multi-sensor remote sensing provides unique benefits for regional to global drought studies, particularly in: 1) revealing the complex drought impact mechanisms on ecosystem components; 2) providing continuous long-term drought related information at large scales; 3) presenting real-time drought information with high spatiotemporal resolution; 4) providing multiple lines of evidence of drought monitoring to improve modeling and prediction robustness; and 5) improving the accuracy of drought monitoring and assessment efforts. We specifically highlight that more mechanism-oriented drought studies that leverage a combination of sensors and techniques (e.g., optical, microwave, hyperspectral, LiDAR, and constellations) across a range of spatiotemporal scales are needed in order to progress and advance our understanding, characterization and description of drought in the future.
