Remote Recording Shock Wave Detector and Gated Interval Timer

A general purpose, time interval counter, specifically applied to the measurement of shock wave arrival times, is designed and tested. The device consists of an integrated circuit oscillator gated into a counter. Time discriminations of 1 μsec or better are readily achieved. Total cost of the entire apparatus does not exceed $75.00, exclusive of labor.

FIELD EXPERIENCE WITH THE MAST OZONE RECORDER.

The practical necessity for continuous air monitoring by an instrument network is explained. Network criteria are listed. A coulometric monitoring system for oxidantis described and evaluated. Operating methods, calibration techniques, costs, and comparative field data are given. The authors conclude the coulometric system is feasible for operation on a widespread basis. Attractive features include: portability; remote recording; easy installation; centralized, coincident calibration of several monitors; linear data output; data consistent with other systems; and a potential for mobile use in horizontal and vertical surveys of the atmosphere.

A transistor device for remote recording of heart rate, respiration, and movements

A description is given of a single-channel transistorized instrument, type CRD-3; it provides for separate radio recording of various physiological quantities, according to the sensitive elements used. Records which may be made from an individual: moving freely include: heart rate (from the R wave of the electrocardiograph led off from the skin of the chest) pneumogram of the chest (by means of a rheostat element), the frequency and duration of the different phases of the respiratory movements (recorded through the closing of contacts). The instrument includes an amplifier, a multivibrator, and a transmitter all powered from miniature storage cells. We have demonstrated the usefulness of multipurpose instruments allowing transmission of different sorts of information over a single channel.

The use of Hall's emf pick-up in experimental physiology

In mechanographic recording of some physiological functions (masticating movements of small mammals, blinking reflex) it is difficult and undesirable to connect the object with the recording device. This connection may be avoided by attaching to the object a miniature constant magnet (weighing about 50–100 mg) and conducting a remote recording of the shifts of the latter by means of the Hall's e.m.f pickup. The value of the galvanomagnetic e.m.f. occurring in the pickup, which is proportional to the intensity of the magnetic flow crossing it, may be recorded on the oscillograph after amplification and transformation. Remote recording of the following was performed: the motions of the lower jaw of small rodents in chronic experimental conditions, respiratory motions of the freely moving fish, blinking reflex of man, mechanocardiogram of frog, etc.

Fetal radioelectrocardiography: a new method of fetal electrocardiography: Preliminary report

Fetal radioelectrocardiography, a new approach to the science of fetal electrocardiography, has been introduced. The advantages of this system are as follows: 1.1. Its accuracy is excellent (99.1 per cent). False negative results are rare.2.2. To date, no false positive results have been obtained.3.3. A high percentage of readable fetal complexes can be obtained. The significance of these complexes was discussed.4.4. This procedure can be used in all pregnant patients, with no special preparations, and at any location.5.5. The system is almost completely free of electrical interference.6.6. The wireless system enables remote recordings. Thus, only the transmitter need be moved to the patient's room, whereas the receiver and recording apparatus remain stationary.Practical application of this new obstetric tool has been outlined. Additional work is in progress.

Simultaneous chronic recording of the temperature of the skin, viscera, and rectum

Miniature thermistors were used for simultaneous automatic remote recording of temperature from various parts of the body of animals. Diagrams showing the assembly of the transducer are given, and the arrangements are described for recording the temperature of the skin, internal organs, and rectum.

An Instrumentation System for Temperature Profiling of Large Liquid Hydrogen Dewars

Liquid Hydrogen is used as a propellant for Project Rover nuclear-powered rocket engines. An instrumentation system is described which measures, records and displays vertical temperature profiles in two 50,000 gallon liquid hydrogen dewars. Platinum-resistance thermometers in each dewar are sampled sequentially. Measurements are digitized, printed, transmitted by PCM for remote recording, and reconverted to analog form for real-time graphical display. Measuring ranges are 30 to 460 degrees Rankine (OR), with 1% absolute accuracy, and 30 to 53°R, with 0.5% absolute accuracy.

An activity recording system using infra-red detection

A complete activity recording system with control of light and temperature is described. It provides remote recording of the activity and also remote checks on the functioning of the various units.

For the purpose of high water forecast, an automatic tide station which can send radio signals and can be operated at remote position, has been developed. The gauge consists of the transmitter and the receiving set. Both sets are controlled by the clocks, and the height of the tide is recorded on the chart once an hour. The frequency of the radio wave is 414 m_??_ sec-1.The principle of remote recording is that of so-called Olland system. Synchronization of the transmitter and the recorder is caused by a small permanent magnet motor with a speed regulater. The automatic zero adjust of the record is made by a long sign of the signal in every cycle, and the height of tide is marked with a dot by the short signs on the chart.These equipments have been tested at the Central Meteorological Observatory and the Tsukishima tide station in Tokyo, from Oct., 1953. The accuracy of the measurement of tide height was within about 1%.Power required for the transmitter is 6V 3W, for which 6 pieces of 500 AH air wet depolarized cells are used.

Apparatus for the Remote Recording of Flow Conditions

SummaryAn instrument is described which detects total pressure, total temperature, and direction of flow simultaneously in a stream tube of one-sixteenth inch diameter. The observed directions and pressures are transmitted electrically to a remote station where they appear as pencil traces on a paper record which moves at a rate proportional to the traverse rate of the instrument. The temperature is noted at intervals and added manually to the trace. Integrators are included which permit rapid assessment of mean pressure and direction at the conclusion of a traverse, the control and maintenance of setting of the instrument being semi-automatic. A further development is also noted whereby total pressure and direction in three dimensions can be observed either manually, or remotely, by automatic means.

Simultaneous recording of pulse contours on central and peripheral arteries with mechano-electronic transducers.

The application of mechano-electronic transducers is described for the simultaneous recording of arterial pulse contours on central and peripheral arteries in man. The principal advantages of this device over air transmission sphygmographs are remote recording and greater freedom of movement for the subject. The instrument is not affected by changes in environmental temperature or barometric pressure.

A remote electrically-recording accelero-meter with particular reference to wheel-impact measurements

The instrument was developed for the measurement of the acceleration of the rear axle of a vehicle. It was necessary for the recording to be done remotely in order accurately to phase three records, two of acceleration and one of spring load. A new method of remote recording has been developed for the purpose. The paper describes the design of the instrument, its principle of operation, and also, though briefly, the auxiliary equipment. The undamped natural frequency is 300 similar and the maximum reading is 25 g. Damping is provided by filling the casing with light mineral oil and, although less than critical, is sufficient to eliminate from the records any disturbance due to self-oscillation.
