ORGANIZING EFFECTIVE ONLIDE BUSINESS MEETING

Currently, the correct organization of internet communication is an important stage of effective work. A business meeting is the integral parts of the working process, a gathering of colleagues for exchanging information, making decisions and discussing internal organizational issues. Sometimes internet distance meetings can lose their effectiveness because of many reasons, and instead of being strictly stuck to the agenda, they become digressive and ineffective. The purpose of this article is to identify the factors influencing the effectiveness internet business meetings at dental clinical departments. The commonest drawback of online meetings is that people are actually little involved in the subject matter, often do not listen and do not response others speaker and try to chat in chat box. Different technical equipment and technical skills of the participants, as well as online platforms chosen can also have negative impact. The experience of internet communication has stressed the importance of careful planning and organization in order to conduct an effective business meeting. Knowing the type of the online meeting type, key issues to be discussed help to organize an effective remote event. Early planning of an online meeting structure declines possible drawback.

Blood biomarkers for neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in the presence and absence of sentinel events.

OBJECTIVETo determine if neonatal serum biomarkers representing different pathways of injury differ for cases of HIE of unknown cause to gain insight into timing and mechanism of injury.STUDY DESIGNIn this cohort of all neonates with HIE admitted to our NICU, newborns with sentinel events were compared to those without during the 1st 3 days of life. Discard neonatal blood during the 1st 3 days of life was used for analysis.RESULTSOf 277 babies with HIE treated with whole-body hypothermia, 190 (68.6%) had blood available for biomarker analysis. 71 (37.4%) were born within our system, and 119 (62.6%) were transferred in from outside hospitals. Of these babies, 77 (40.5%) had a sentinel event and 113 (59.6%) had no sentinel event. Although the degree of metabolic acidosis was similar, repeated measures analysis showed that during the initial 3 days of life neonates born with HIE in the absence of sentinel events had 41.4% decreased VEGF (p=0.027) and 62.5% increased IL-10 serum concentrations (p=0.005).CONCLUSIONThese changes indicate that neonatal HIE in the absence of sentinel events is not related to an unrecognized acute intrapartum event and is possibly related to chronic hypoxia of lower severity or recovery from a remote event.

The Extended Congress: Reimagining scientific meetings after the COVID-19 pandemic.

This article was migrated. The article was marked as recommended. The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted the medical meetings planned for 2020. This health crisis has caused the cancellation, postponement or a pivot in educational design to virtual formats. In the latter case, the format for virtual meetings has remained very similar to the cancelled face-to-face meeting, by using primarily web conferencing systems. This article intends to start a dialogue with the medical education and events community about possible delivery formats. Among them, the concept of an "Extended Congress" is introduced. The extended congress uses the extension of time, space and languages to a scientific meeting. It aims to: 1) unleash the reach of traditional meetings through the use of technology to access larger audiences in different languages, across a country and internationally, with local leaders to help interpret the knowledge and localize it, and 2) to improve knowledge translation into practice through a sequential and active learning process. An ongoing example is described as a proof of concept: the Latin American Peritoneal Dialysis Extended Congress attracted 774 remote participants from over 20 countries, 93% of whom were paid registrants. Initially designed as a hybrid (live plus remote) event scheduled for March 2020, it had to be reframed as a remote only meeting due to the COVID-19 pandemic, thus protecting the health of members while providing continued value to the organization and attendees of the event. With this experience in mind, the authors are currently designing programs in the United States, through collaboration with the University of Virginia Office of Continuing Medical Education. In summary, the design of meetings can better utilize and integrate technology and reach larger audiences with a blend of formats. Those organizations that adapt more quickly to offer these events will concentrate more of the share, as seen with the adoption of technology by other industries.

Personal Experience and Support for Climate Change Mitigation Policies: A Revealed Preference Approach

People tend to think of climate change as a distant and remote event that does not affect their livelihoods. This psychological distance can be a barrier against behavior change and support for mitigation policies. Washington State was the first state in the U.S. to put carbon pricing measures on the ballot: Initiative 732 in 2016 and Initiative 1631 in 2018. Both measures were rejected by voters. Prior to both elections, Washingtonians had experienced adverse impacts of climate change across the state: poor air quality due to wildfire smoke in 2018 and an unprecedented widespread drought in 2015. We perform a spatial analysis using voting data on the two carbon pricing measures in Washington to study the effect of experiencing adverse impacts of climate change on support for carbon policies. We find that experiencing poor air quality significantly increases the support for the carbon policy. Moreover, experiencing poor air quality increases the support of Democrats more than Republicans. In case of drought experience, there is no significant relationship at the state level, but there is heterogeneity between voters in Eastern Washington and those in Western Washington: drought experience increases the support of Eastern voters more than Western voters. This might be due to the fact that droughts are more prevalent in Eastern Washington and Eastern residents might see a stronger link between drought and climate change.

Composition of English News Stories: Strategies or Schemas?

The research deals with the composition of the English news story revealing that it rests on the interaction of strategies, tactics and schemas of perceptual origin. The material of the research is the BBC news stories. The paper applies cognitive and discursive methods to revealing the composition of English news stories. The results obtained show that strategies determine the choice of predicates structuring an event. Schemas of perceptual origin define the representation of event components in terms of human perception of environment: focusing, with the concentration of attention on one entity; identification, with the introduction of a single entity into the reader’s visual field; zooming-in by the use of the nouns indicating a transformation of a far distance into remote, close or immediate. In this case remote event models are comparatively few in number, because they offer a general picture of what is happening, without going into detail. In case of the subjective zooming-in model the desired effect is evoked by the interaction of collective nouns pointing to a group, i.e. distant perspective, and units in the plural, implying a distant position. The event-subjective perspective is implemented by a sequence of uncountables, denoting a general state of affairs, countables in the plural and in the singular, representing participants from the near or close distance. The tactics include verbalized contents into the composition of the text introducing the sections of context, commentaries, referring to witnesses or sources of information. The conclusions indicate the interaction of strategies, perceptual schemas and tactics in organizing English news stories.

Spectrum-Aware and Energy-Adaptive Reliable Transport for Internet of Sensing Things

Wireless sensors equipped with cognitive radio, i.e., cognitive radio sensor networks (CRSN), can access the spectrum in an opportunistic manner and coexist with licensed users to mitigate the crowded spectrum problem and provide ubiquitous remote event monitoring and tracking for cyber-physical systems. In this paper, a novel transport layer protocol for CRSN, spectrum-aware energy-adaptive reliable transport protocol is presented to enable energy-adaptive collaborative event sensing in spectrum-scarce cyber-physical systems. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to specifically devise a reliable event transport scheme for CRSN.

Drivers of Tuberculosis Transmission.

Measuring tuberculosis transmission is exceedingly difficult, given the remarkable variability in the timing of clinical disease after Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection; incident disease can result from either a recent (ie, weeks to months) or a remote (ie, several years to decades) infection event. Although we cannot identify with certainty the timing and location of tuberculosis transmission for individuals, approaches for estimating the individual probability of recent transmission and for estimating the fraction of tuberculosis cases due to recent transmission in populations have been developed. Data used to estimate the probable burden of recent transmission include tuberculosis case notifications in young children and trends in tuberculin skin test and interferon γ–release assays. More recently, M. tuberculosis whole-genome sequencing has been used to estimate population levels of recent transmission, identify the distribution of specific strains within communities, and decipher chains of transmission among culture-positive tuberculosis cases. The factors that drive the transmission of tuberculosis in communities depend on the burden of prevalent tuberculosis; the ways in which individuals live, work, and interact (eg, congregate settings); and the capacity of healthcare and public health systems to identify and effectively treat individuals with infectious forms of tuberculosis. Here we provide an overview of these factors, describe tools for measurement of ongoing transmission, and highlight knowledge gaps that must be addressed.

Observations of remotely triggered seismicity in Salton Sea and Coso geothermal regions, Southern California, USA, after big (MW>7.8) teleseismic earthquakes

A relocated catalog was used to search for changes in seismicity rate in the Salton Sea and the Coso geothermal regions, southern California, USA, during and after large (MW>7.8) teleseismic earthquakes. Seismicity in these two regions was analyzed within 30- day windows before and after the occurrence of five major earthquakes: the 2002 Denali fault, Alaska (MW7.9); the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman (MW9.2); the 2010 Central Chile (MW8.8); the 2011 Tohoku-Oki, Japan (MW9.1); and the 2012 Offshore Northern Sumatra (Mw8.6) earthquakes. The Denali (MW7.9) earthquake coincided with an increase in seismicity in the Salton Sea region the day when this remote event occurred, indicating that instantaneous trigge-red seismicity was likely related with the passage of its surface waves. However, in the Coso region the seismicity rate remained approximately constant during the 30-day observation period. The seismicity after the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman (MW9.2) earthquake increased in both regions 9 days after the mega-earthquake. The seismicity after the 2010 Chile (MW8.8) earthquake increased in both regions approximately 14 days after the remote event. The seismicity in Salton Sea and Coso regions increased 17 and 14 days, respectively, after the 2011 Japan (MW9.1) earthquake, suggesting that delayed triggered seismicity was induced after the passage of the surface waves in both regions. Similarly, 6 and 16 days after the 2012 northern Sumatra (MW8.6) earthquake the seismicity also increased in Salton Sea and Coso regions, respectively. These observations can be interpreted as evidence of instantaneous and delayed dynamic triggering induced by large remote earthquakes. The maximum magnitude of the delayed triggered swarm increased with the strength (MW/?) of the mega-earthquake and, the stronger the remote earthquake, the longer the delay time.

Numerical modeling of seismic wave propagation and ground motion in underground mines

Dynamic rock support plays a critical role in ensuring mine safety and its design depends on several key design inputs. For rock support design and forensic analysis of rockburst damage, it is important to understand seismic wave propagation and ground motion distribution near excavation boundaries for seismic waves generated from a remote fault slip seismic event. This study aims at achieving a better understanding of wave propagation patterns around mine tunnels and capturing ground motion (Peak Particle Velocity - PPV) accurately for dynamic support design and forensic analysis. An advanced seismic wave propagation modeling tool, SPECFEM2D, is used to study complex wave propagation in underground mines. Attentions are paid to studying the influence of different mine excavations and geological structures on wavefields and ground motions near excavation boundaries. The simulation results show that the wavefields and the ground motion distributions become more complicated as more mine excavations and geological structures are involved. Moreover, the PPV distribution around a tunnel can be altered, leading to high and low PPV zones around the tunnel. In addition, modulation of travel time and long S-coda waves can be observed in the complex seismograms. Using the modeling approach, areas in an underground mine that may experience high potentials of rockburst damage could be identified and mine safety could be improved by implementing dynamic rock ground support in these areas.

Site Specific Ground Motion Modeling and Seismic Response Analysis for Microzonation of Baku, Azerbaijan

We investigated ground response for Baku (Azerbaijan) from two earthquakes of magnitude M6.3 occurred in Caspian Sea (characterized as a near event) and M7.5 in Shamakhi (characterized as a remote extreme event). S-wave velocity with the average shear wave velocity over the topmost 30 m of soil is obtained by experimental method from the V P values measured for the soils. The downtown part of Baku city is characterized by low VS30 values (< 250 m/s), related to sand, water-saturated sand, gravel-pebble, and limestone with clay. High surface PGA of 240 gal for the M7.5 event and of about 190 gal for the M6.3 event, and hence a high ground motion amplification, is observed in the shoreline area, through downtown, in the north-west, and in the east parts of Baku city with soft clays, loamy sands, gravel, sediments.

The Remote Effect of Typhoon Megi (2010) on the Heavy Rainfall over Northeastern Taiwan

The goal of this work is to improve understanding of the mechanisms leading to a heavy rainfall event under the combined influences of the outer circulation of Typhoon Megi (2010), the Asian monsoon, and the topography of Taiwan. Megi is a case featuring high forecast uncertainty associated with its sudden recurvature, along with remote heavy rainfall over northeastern Taiwan (especially at Yilan) and its adjacent seas during 19–23 October 2010. An ensemble simulation is conducted, and characteristic ensemble members are separated into subgroups based on either track accuracy or rainfall forecast skill. Comparisons between different subgroups are made to investigate favorable processes for precipitation and how the differences between these subgroups affect the rainfall simulation. Several mechanisms leading to this remote rainfall event are shown. The northward transport of water vapor by Megi’s outer circulation provides a moisture-laden environment over the coastal area of eastern Taiwan. Meanwhile, the outer circulation of Megi (with high [Formula: see text]) encounters the northeasterly monsoon (with low [Formula: see text]), and strong vertical motion is triggered through isentropic lifting in association with low-level frontogenesis over the ocean northeast of Yilan. Most importantly, the northeasterly flow advects the moisture inland to the steep mountains in south-southwestern Yilan, where strong orographic lifting further induces torrential rainfall. In addition, the analyses further attribute the uncertainty in simulating Megi’s remote rainfall to several factors, including variations of storm track, strength and extension of the northeasterly monsoon, and, above all, the impinging angle of the upstream flow on the topography.

Use of a nominal group technique to evaluate a remote area simulation event for paramedicine students

Background: In 2015 a pilot remote area practice workshop was conducted for final year students in an entry to practice paramedic program attending the University of the Sunshine Coast. The pedagogy was based on social constructivism and experiential learning in which students were tasked to solve real world problems in a remote environment. A feed-forward teaching philosophy based on collaboration and scaffolding enabled students to construct their own knowledge of practice in this environment. Methods: We evaluated the experience from both participant and facilitator viewpoints using the Nominal Group Technique, which places emphasis on themes within the feedback obtained. Nominal group technique was utilised as a data collection method at the end of the two-day workshop to achieve consensus on positive aspects of the learning experience as well as to identify areas to be developed in future iterations. Results: The data indicated that the participants valued the challenging scenarios resembling real-world practices that also included a mock communications centre. This highlighted issues which may not have been discovered using other methods of feedback. We found the nominal group technique method to be an appropriate method to gain a consensus of opinions and differentiate critical feedback from the less critical feedback.

Time, Space, Gravity and Spacetime Based on Yangton &amp; Yington Theory, and Spacetime Shrinkage Versus Universe Expansion

Wu’s Particle is proposed as the building block of all Matters, therefore Time and Length can be measured by the Period and Size of the circulation of Wu’s Particle. For a local event, object and process, the Time, Length and Velocity measured by the Period and Size of Wu’s Particle have equal values as that of the identical events, objects and processes occurred at different locations measured by the corresponding Periods and Sizes of Wu’s Particles. However, for a remote event, object and process, the Time, Length and Velocity change with the Period and Size of Wu’s Particle at observation. For an event, object and process occurred in a large Gravitational Field and an ancient Universe, Time runs slower, Length gets longer and Velocity is smaller observed on Earth. As a result, light travels at lower speed with lower frequency and larger wavelength from a large Gravitational Field known as Gravitational Red Shift; also from a star of a few millions light years away known as Cosmological Red Shift. Spacetime is a four dimensional system based on the Period and Size of Wu’s Particle. Since the Period and Size of Wu’s Particle change with Gravitational Field and Concentration of Higgs Bosons, Spacetime is a function of Gravitational Field and Concentration of Higgs Bosons. In Wu’s Particle, Time is proportional to 3/2 power of Length which is named as “Wu’s Spacetime Theory”. Furthermore, instead of “Universe Accelerating Expansion Theory” which is based on the non-existing Dark Energy, “Spacetime Accelerating Shrinkage Theory” is proposed to explain the accelerating expansion of the Universe.

Midtropospheric frontogenesis associated with antecedent indirect precipitation ahead of tropical cyclones over the Korean Peninsula

On the Korean Peninsula (KP), heavy rainfall often precedes the landfall of a tropical cyclone (TC). This rainfall is called antecedent indirect precipitation (AIP), because it occurs well beyond the effective radius of the TC. The present study examines the statistical characteristics and physical mechanism of the AIP produced by TCs that influenced the KP during the period 1993–2004. Composite analyses demonstrate that the AIP events were accompanied by midtropospheric frontogenesis due to the TC-mid-latitude environment interaction. When an approaching TC encountered an approaching mid-latitude upper-level trough, this encounter resulted in confluent and deformed flows at the mid-level by the combination of westerlies from the trough and southerlies from the TC. The delicate balance of horizontal winds related to the two systems at the mid-level led to the midtropospheric frontogenesis to the north of the KP. The frontogenetic feature related to the AIP was in marked contrast to those of the remote rainfall event over the KP and the predecessor rainfall event over the United States suggested by previous studies. Quasi-geostrophic analysis demonstrates that the midtropospheric front induced thermally direct circulation, which led to ascending motion over the KP. Consequently, the midtropospheric front helped to intensify the AIP, together with the convective instability that was amplified by the transport of warm and moist air along the conduit between the TC and subtropical high.

Interaction between Typhoon Vicente (1208) and the western Pacific subtropical high during the Beijing extreme rainfall of 21 July 2012

The heaviest rainfall in recent six decades fell in Beijing on 21 July 2012, reaching a record of 460 mm within 18 h. This rainfall was a typical remote precipitation event related to Typhoon Vicente (1208). Observational analysis indicates that Vicente influenced distant heavy rainfall by transporting water vapor northward to the Beijing area. This moisture transport was mainly driven by the interaction between Vicente and the western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) associated with the formation of a low-level southeasterly moisture channel. A set of numerical sensitivity experiments were performed with prescribed typhoons of different intensities to investigate the interaction between Vicente and the WPSH and its effects on this rainstorm process. The results indicate that the WPSH interacting with typhoons of different intensities may exert varying degrees of influence on the development of a southeasterly moisture channel, resulting in a change in rain rate and location over the Beijing area. Specifically, in the presence of an enhanced typhoon, the WPSH shows remarkable withdrawal to the east, which is favorable for a northward extension of the southeasterly moisture channel, thereby increasing moisture supply for the rainstorm. The WPSH tends to stretch westward in a zonal pattern if the typhoon is weakened or removed, hindering the northward extension of the moisture channel. Thus, the rainfall area may be expected to expand or contract, with corresponding increases or decreases in rain rate over the Beijing area with a strengthened or weakened typhoon, respectively.

Taking Remote Production to the Next Level: CBC's Coverage of the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games

In 2012, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) was awarded the Canadian broadcast rights for the 2014 and 2016 Olympics. The Olympic broadcast experience is a nationbuilding event that embraces partnerships and cross-platforms and be can be shared in multiple languages. Content will be delivered on TV, desktop, mobile, tablet, and radio platforms with all sport available to watch live in both official languages, emphasizing a need for a production model that is flexible, robust, and cost effective. To meet this challenge, CBC/Radio-Canada (RC) has chosen a remote production model that utilizes a transmission concept that will extend the reach of our Olympic headquarters in both Montreal and Toronto not only to the International Broadcast Center, but directly to the sporting venues. This presentation covers new concepts of remote production, next-generation live remote event delivery, and transmission concepts that allow CBC/RC to make innovative production and cost-minimizing decisions. Remote production, as it applies to the CBC/RC, is a concept of producing content with minimal infrastructure deployed at the remote site. With only the necessary resources on site, costs are reduced, but more importantly quality and accessibility of media are increased utilizing existing robust infrastructure at home to support remote talent. Remote production on this scale required the development of new transmission concepts. Subjects covered in this paper include file-based delivery of content, Internet protocol technology at the venue, minimizing frame rate conversion, remote audio and video production, and next-generation transmission. The presentation also provides insight into the technical and operational challenges that were overcome and production opportunities that were realized during the design and implementation of the plan.

Surgical treatment of primary intracardiac myxoma: 20-year experience in "Shahid Modarres Hospital"--a tertiary university hospital--Tehran, Iran.

Although cardiac tumors are not common they may vary in terms of race and surgical approach in different countries. Method. Patients data of 20 years was collected and evaluated in the “Shahid Modarres Hospital”—a tertiary university hospital—Tehran, Iran. Results. 42 patients with cardiac myxoma (all cases in 20 years) were included in study, 17 males and 25 females, age difference: 13 to 76 years (mean 50.6). Most of patients were in functional classes I, II. 35 patients complained of dyspnea and 3 patients had embolic events. 97.6% of tumors were primary (41 patients) and one tumor was recurrent (2.4%), 85.7% of tumors (36 cases) were located in LA, and 88.1% of tumors (37 cases) were pediculated. 40 patients (95%) had one tumor. In 22 patients (52.3%) after tumor resection septal defects were repaired primarily while in 18 patients (42.8%) the defects were repaired with pericardial patch and In one patient, tumor resected without any septal defect. Mean tumor size was about 5.22 cm (range of 2.2 to 8.2 cm). Postoperatively, 33 patients discharged from hospital without any complication. Discussion. The research reveals that patients' age and gender were similar to that of other studies in other countries while tumor's incidence seems to be higher. 3 patients were diagnosed after remote embolic event and one patient was diagnosed after MI reflecting relatively high tumor complications and late diagnosis. Conclusion. In our study mean time from diagnosis to operation was too long. The patients had more preoperative embolic events and complication. However, size of myxoma and location of that was as same as its rate in the other literature. As recommendation we suggested that in all patients with vague chest pain or remote embolic events cardiac myxomas should be ruled out.
