This paper applies mode coupling method to the design of modes purification device. With this method, the length of the phase adjustment waveguide can be computed precisely, which can increase the efficiency of design. With the new method, we design a purification device for an X-band overmoded relativistic backward wave oscillator and the output mixed modes of 66.6% TM01 and 33.4% TM02 are purified to be 99.47% TM01 mode and 0.53% TM02 mode, respectively. Since mode composition is hard to measure in experiments, analysis and discussion are made regarding the modes purifier, and moreover calculation formula of purification effect of other modes ratio after going through the mode purifier is derived, which can be used in evaluating and forecasting the effects of the mode purifier.
