Application of K-Means Clustering Algorithm to Obtain Recommendations for Strategies to Increase the Number of Students in the Information Systems Study Program at ITB Ahmad Dahlan Jakarta

The rapid development of technology today has almost touched all sectors of life such as the economy, health and education. The technology currently used produces a lot of data every day, one of which is in the field of education. Data mining is a group of methods used to investigate and reveal complex relationships in very large data sets. Data here means information organized in a tabular format, as is often used in relational database management. This research uses data from the academic section of ITB Ahmad Dahlan, namely data on students of the Information Systems study program from 2019 to 2022. The attributes that will be used for this research are student gender, student employment status and student achievement index. Recommendations for promotional strategies to increase the number of new students are to conduct visits to high schools or vocational schools. Not only that, the new student admission team can also promote to companies or offices.

The umbilical cord of finite model theory

Abstract Model theory was born and developed as a part of mathematical logic. It has various application domains but is not beholden to any of them. A priori, the research area known as finite model theory would be just a part of model theory but it didn’t turn out that way. There is one application domain, relational database management, that finite model theory had been beholden to during a substantial early period when databases provided the motivation and were the main application target for finite model theory. Arguably, finite model theory was motivated even more by complexity theory. But the subject of this paper is how relational database theory influenced finite model theory. This is NOT a scholarly history of the subject with proper credits to all participants. My original intent was to cover just the developments that I witnessed or participated in. The need to make the story coherent forced me to cover some additional developments.

Creating the Conceptual and Logical Model of a Journal Database

This article describes the process of creating the conceptual and logical model of a journal database. To efficiently extract the information from the articles published in the journal so far, the idea of creating a database has emerged. To create a database, it is recommended to design a high-level conceptual model and convert that into a logical data model. The benefit of the thoughtful design is that it shows the structure of the database in an easily comprehensible form. The entity-relationship model is a fast and efficient way to create the conceptual model and it can be easily converted to a relational database model, which is a logical model. The initial version of the entity-relationship model of the journal database had one entity type, 25 attributes, and no relationship. The final version contained three entity types, 39 attributes, and three relationships. This final conceptual model was converted to a logical model, the relational model. The result was ten tables to store entity data with 22 different fields and another three tables to ensure the relationships between the tables. The developed model can be created in a relational database manager and is suitable for serving information needs related to the journal.

Preserving Data Privacy with Record Retrieval using Visual Cryptography and Encryption Techniques

Objectives: Secure data sharing using visual cryptography with selective retrieval upon key match is introduced in this paper. As an illustration, medical and student database is considered. Methods/Analysis: The original database is stored as relational database model. In shared data applications encryption is used to achieve privacy of sensitive (personal) data from unauthorized users. The work includes encryption, selective retrieval, retrieving records with matching markers, etc. The proposed system search records from queries in the encrypted domain itself. Findings: All application related operations like checking for some threshold value, searching for similar records across different users, etc. is included. Because of proposed system any leakage of information over retrieved set of documents is avoided. Existing searching algorithm requires O (n) comparisons (searching operations) at the server to evaluate if the database contains a chosen keyword. The communication overhead minimized between the user and server. The computation is minimized between server and user. It allows the multi-user to search over the encrypted data. Searching time is minimized by relational database management. From encrypted query server cannot, distinguish between documents, determine document contents, check for search keyword and extend beyond decrypted result. Novelty/Improvement: The algorithm is novel in the sense that uncorrelatedness among the different user's data is preserved, along with complete sharing.

Training Database Technology in DBMS MS Access

The article describes the methodological issues of learning relational database technology and management systems relational databases. DBMS Microsoft Access is the primer for learning of DBMS. This methodology allows to generate some general cultural competence, such as the possession of the main methods, ways and means of production, storage and processing of information, computer skills as a means of managing information. Also must formed professional competence such as the ability to collect, analyze and process the data necessary for solving the professional tasks, the ability to use solutions for analytical and research tasks modern technology and information technology.

五軸加工機によるプレカット生産を前提としたツーバイフォー構法のBIMシステムに関する研究

In this paper, we describe a building information modeling (BIM) system implemented to design a two-by-four construction system. In a BIM system, a machining method for processing lumber parts is described using a computer programming language, and the parts’ data are managed by a relational database management system.We examined parts processing using a five-axis CNC machine designed by us; furthermore, we confirmed that the BIM system can control the operation of a five-axis CNC machine with high accuracy.

Biomedical Image Visualization as a Web Application

We aim at building the Web-based Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Radiology Information System (RIS). It is challenging to make the functionality of the dedicated imaging and visualization programs compiled from a native programming language publicly available via a Web based interface. Accessing information of the original image data and algorithmic details should be hidden, thus scripts executed by the webpage browser should be avoided. In this regard, we propose a solution based on the ASP.NET framework. Managed codes in C# are developed for Web controls, server-side GUI and relational database management; whereas unmanaged server-dependent imaging programs are invoked from within the managed programs. We present such a Web application for biomedical imaging and visualization, addressing its capability of implementing comprehensive image processing algorithms at the server side where proprietary datasets reside and direct access to them by client-side applications is restricted. The advantages of such a Web application include (a) high security of the proprietary data which is always a primary consideration in deployment of a networked system, (b) thin-client strategy in which heavy computing tasks are completed on the dedicated server with highperformance hardware, and (c) less demand for network bandwidth as only the rendering results instead of multiple high-dimensional datasets need to be transferred.

The Integration of Unified Knowledge Management with Mold-Design Navigating Process

This study uses the embedded browser in the most widely used CAD (Computer Aided Design) , with the mold-design navigating process of the secondarily developed component as the core, to construct a networked knowledge management platform with the interaction between the relational database management and mold-design navigating process. It then integrated the component knowledge database, historical cases and technical files, and gave the overall consideration of mold manufacture and injection molding to assist the mold design. The component knowledge database provides related components and shortens the time of mold design. The historical knowledge database offers related issue points for reference, reducing the repeated occurrence of design errors. The technical knowledge database furnishes the related knowledge in the process of mold development, accelerates the new employee training and cuts the labor cost. For the knowledge database in use, the data will automatically increase and grow, gradually becoming know-why and know-how of strong enterprises, know-what of handling problems and important core assets of the enterprise. The unified integration and utilization of the component, historical and technical knowledge databases make the mold-design navigating process more complete and accelerate the mold design. By data classification and grouping, a consistent GUI (Graphic User Interface) is established, replacing the words by icons, easier for developers to use. The accumulation and feedback of the knowledge databases provide more complete data, information and knowledge and thus considerably reducing the time for the mold development.

Semantic Data Integration Approaches for E-Governance

Increased generation of data in the e-governance R&D process is required to generate the expected services in terms of enhanced e-services productivity and pipelines. The inability of existing integration strategies to organise and apply the available knowledge to the range of real scientific, business and governance issues is impacting on not only productivity but also transparency of information in crucial safety and regulatory applications. This requires focusing on normative models of e-governance that typically can assert horizontal (inter-agency) and vertical (inter-governmental) integration of data flows to represent the most sophisticated form of e-government delivering greatest payoff for both governments and users. The new range of semantic technologies based on ontology enable proper integration of knowledge in a way that is reusable by several applications across governance business from discovery to ministry affairs. The objective of this paper is to provide an insight on the necessary and sufficient knowledge base to deal with data integration using semantic web technologies applicable for e-governance based on exploratory research using literature survey. It assumes that reader has the capability of understanding some basic knowledge on E-governance, Relational Database Management, Ontology, and Service Oriented Architecture and Semantic Web Technology.

Study of relational nuclear databases and online services

A relational nuclear database management and webbased services software system has been developed. Its objective is to allow users to access numerical and graphical representation of nuclear data and to easily reconstruct nuclear data in original standardized formats from the relational databases. It presents 9 relational nuclear libraries: 5 ENDF format neutron reaction databases (BROND, CENDL, ENDF, JEF and JENDL), the ENSDF database, the EXFOR database, the IAEA Photonuclear Data Library and the charged particle reaction data from the FENDL database. The computer programs providing support for database management and data retrievals are based on the Linux implementation of PHP and the MySQL software,and are platformindependent. The first version of this software was officially released in September 2001.

A matching-based algorithm for page access sequencing in join processing

One of the fundamental problems in relational database management is the handling of the join operation. Two of the problems are: (1) finding a page access sequence which requires the minimum number of buffer pages if there are no page reaccesses, and (2) finding a page access sequence which requires the minimum number of page reaccesses given a fixed buffer size. In general, a heuristic for the first problem can be converted to a corresponding heuristic to the second problem. In this paper, a new heuristic is proposed. The experimental results show that the new heuristic performs significantly better than existing heuristics for data which is modelled with geometric graphs, and no worse in others, for the first problem. It performs similarly better for the second problem if the fixed buffer size is not much less than the maximum buffer size generated in the first problem.

Comparative analysis of model management and relational database management

There has recently been considerable interest in research and practice that rely substantially on ideas from both model management and database management to solve problems that cannot be adequately addressed by either field alone. Following this frontier, this paper examines the essential nature of model management and relational database management, and discusses the validity of parallels which appear to exist between them. The characteristics of applications, functions, representations, utilizations, and research are used as a basis for conducting comparisons. Through these comparisons, the strengths and weaknesses of each field are evaluated, and significant similarities and differences are identified. An application for making use of the parallels identified is also presented in the paper. Rather than restricting the ideas and techniques applied within each field, this paper encourages the cross-fertilization of both model management and relational database management, in the hope that this may spawn creative ideas for research.

Development of a Relational Accident Database Management System for Mexican Federal Roads

Two years ago, the Mexican Transportation Institute began to develop a computer-based management system of the information collected by various organizations about accidents occurring on the Federal Road Network. This system combines the information gathered by these organizations with the purpose of completing and validating the data so that tools can be developed for processing and analyzing the validated data and the processed data and developed tools can be made available to users. It was decided to support the development of such efforts on computer databases already being generated, on database processing and management software, on geographic information systems, and on remote data-exchange systems (e.g., the Internet). The progress made so far in the development of the computer system is reviewed. The system has been named the “Relational Accident Database Management System for Mexican Federal Roads” (SAIACF, in Spanish). The information sources beneficial to this project are identified and analyzed. The ideal scheme conceived for the integration of the various information sources is presented, and the SAIACF system is outlined. Some of the results obtained after its application to the information corresponding to 1997 are shown. Also, the element that was generated to make the information and the tools available to users is described, and conclusions are drawn.

Determinación de distritos de aptitud acuícola mediante la aplicación de sistemas de información geográfica

This paper shows a methodological procedure to aquaculture site selection for the development of salmonid and bivalve mollusk culture. The proposal includes different processes of digital cartographic analysis and management of relational data bases in matrixes work applying a Geographical Information System (GIS). The basis of this procedure is a model design that integrate the environmental criteria with the species requirements. It is considerate the site construction by the processing of images, assessing the carrying capacity and the decision support evaluation through a multi-criteria and multi-objective.

Integrating symbolic images into a multimedia database system using classification and abstraction approaches

Symbolic images are composed of a finite set of symbols that have a semantic meaning. Examples of symbolic images include maps (where the semantic meaning of the symbols is given in the legend), engineering drawings, and floor plans. Two approaches for supporting queries on symbolic-image databases that are based on image content are studied. The classification approach preprocesses all symbolic images and attaches a semantic classification and an associated certainty factor to each object that it finds in the image. The abstraction approach describes each object in the symbolic image by using a vector consisting of the values of some of its features (e.g., shape, genus, etc.). The approaches differ in the way in which responses to queries are computed. In the classification approach, images are retrieved on the basis of whether or not they contain objects that have the same classification as the objects in the query. On the other hand, in the abstraction approach, retrieval is on the basis of similarity of feature vector values of these objects. Methods of integrating these two approaches into a relational multimedia database management system so that symbolic images can be stored and retrieved based on their content are described. Schema definitions and indices that support query specifications involving spatial as well as contextual constraints are presented. Spatial constraints may be based on both locational information (e.g., distance) and relational information (e.g., north of). Different strategies for image retrieval for a number of typical queries using these approaches are described. Estimated costs are derived for these strategies. Results are reported of a comparative study of the two approaches in terms of image insertion time, storage space, retrieval accuracy, and retrieval time.

The translational signal database, TransTerm, is now a relational database.

TransTerm-97 contains more than 97 500 non-redundant coding-sequence initiation and termination contexts compiled from GenBank, release 101 (15-June-1997). In addition, several coding sequence parameters are available: coding sequence length, Nc, GC3, and, when it is computable, codon adaptation index (CAI). Codon usage tables and summaries of start and stop codon contexts are also included. The information covers more than 325 species and organelles, including seven complete bacterial genomes and one complete eukaryotic genome. To promote research in translational control of protein synthesis, TransTerm has been converted into a relational database to ease the process of making queries. The relational database manager, Postgresql, gives access to the database using SQL (Structured Query Language). A World Wide Web interface using forms is being completed to allow the casual user access to the database. Extensions are planned to include the full 5'-UTR, full coding sequence and 3'-UTR. Using an object-oriented approach to the development of a relational database application system

Object-oriented technology has been proposed in recent years as a promising approach to increasing programmer productivity and the quality of software development. The traditional development of a database application system distinctively separates a system's behavior and its data by using entity-relationship diagrams, functional decomposition, and process-dependency diagrams. The object-oriented approach, on the other hand, integrates both data and behavior, and this can result in a merging of both software and databases. To gain more insight into the object-oriented approach to the analysis and design of software development, we applied this approach to the development of a simplified hospital administration system. The resulting application system is an object-based system but uses a relational database manager. This illustrates the fact that object-oriented approaches are not limited to object-oriented systems or databases: they can, in fact, be used for more traditional design. This technique may allow easier transition from data-based to object-based systems. Software that is reusable, improved in its design, more reliable, and simpler in its programming and maintenance requirements would truly be an advantage to users and developers alike.

Developing an Integrated Location and Information Database for Teaching Plant Identification and Use

The landscape plants that exist on the Alabama A&M University, Normal, campus are readily accessible for a plant identification and use course. Managing location, health, and cultivar information is critical to optimizing this resource. As a classroom assignment, campus plants were inventoried; entered into FileMaker Pro 2.1, a relational database manager; characterized; and assigned locations on campus. The campus map was scanned using a Microtek Scanmaker IIxe and the image was imported into MacDraw II. A symbol library, which included symbols for trees, shrubs, and groundcovers, was developed by scanning hand-drawn images and then importing them into MacPaint. These bit-mapped images were duplicated as often as necessary and placed in appropriate locations on the campus map in MacDraw II. Students were exposed to landscape plant materials, database managers, and computer graphics capabilities. This approach has other advantages: database information can be easily coordinated with physical location, plants can be sorted based on their characteristics, and information can be routinely and easily revised and updated. The database is used in the landscape plant materials class as a teaching tool and for self-guided tours.

1053-2 Cath-Lab Assistant: Integrated Image Analysis and Relational Database Program

Cardiac catheterization techniques deal with large amount of image data from which quantitative parameters are extracted. Our program provides relational database organization and management functions for both images and measurement data. In addition, it integrates database with our previously developed image analysis programs for intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and coronary angiography. The program runs in Microsoft Windows environment and does not require specialized imaging hardware. Program consists of three functional modules: image database system, IVUS contour extraction/analysis module and coronary angiography contour extraction/analysis module, Image database system provides image retrieval, storage and display together with extracted quantitative data. Each database record includes data on patient administration, medical history and noninvasive test results. User is provided with browse and search controls for database navigation, as well as with query by example and lists and reports generation. Analysis programs are incorporated into the database through OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) technique, which enables user to launch appropriate image analysis program simply by clicking the mouse over the chosen image. Extracted analysis data are automatically stored in the appropriate database record. Furthermore, any other image processing/analysis Windows program that supports OLE and can act as OLE server may be linked with the database by simple Clipboard cut and paste operations. All images and data can be exported to other Windows applications (text processors, spreadsheets, statistical and data presentation software). In practical testing the program proved to be user friendly, interactive and flexible. It was particularly useful for integration of both images and quantitative data obtained by coronary angiography and by IVUS, being helpful in the validation of the latter technique, and providing better insight into the extent and severity of coronary arteriosclerotic disease.

Providing Access to the Acquisitions on Order File Through the Local Area Network

The University of North Texas Libraries' Materials Acsuisitions Department closed its Paper order file in September, 19a. Because ihe order file was usid by librarians outside the department, it was necessary to provide access to the automated version. The in-house acquisitions system uses Paradox, a relational database manager from Borland. Due to the security structure of the Libraries' LAN, a copy of the order file was designed and placed on a shared directory for access by Librarians and staff outside of Acquisitions. Title, author, department and ISBN indexes were included A menu-driven program using the Paradox Application Language (PAL) was written to guide the occasional user in searching the indexes. Training in using the Files was provided through the Libraries' Staff Development Program.
