Composite materials are widely used in aerospace, defense, automotive and structural applications due to its superior properties such as high strength, high stiffness, high corrosion resistance, high toughness and high wear resistance. Particulate Reinforced Metal matrix composites are extensively used in automobile applications due to its high strength and high temperature resistance properties. Al7050 alloy is an aluminium alloy, with zinc as the major alloying element. It is an easily available and light weight alloy. In the present research Al7050-Zircon composites were produced by using stir casting method by varying the weight percentage of zircon in steps of 0%, 2%, 4%, 6% and 8% by weight. The test specimens were prepared as per ASTM standards. The microstructure characterization of Al7050-Zircon composites were carried out using Scanning Electron Microscope. The hardness test of Al7050-Zircon composites were carried out using hardness testing machine. The tensile strength of Al7050-Zircon composites was carried out by using universal testing machine. The SEM micrographs of Al7050-Zircon composite show the occurrence of zircon particles in the Al7050 matrix. The SEM images show the homogeneous distribution of zircon particles in the Al7050 matrix. The hardness value of Al7050-Zircon composite is more than Al7050 alloy alone. The tensile strength of Al7050-Zircon composite is more than Al7050 alloy alone. The optimum value of hardness and tensile strength of Al7050-Zircon composite is obtained at 6% of Zircon.
