Prevalence and genotype analysis of Cryptosporidium and Giardia duodenalis from shelter dogs in South Korea

Cryptosporidium and Giardia duodenalis are common gastrointestinal protozoan parasites that cause diarrhea in humans and animals. Although dogs in animal shelters in South Korea can be reintroduced into human society as companions, no continuous investigations have been conducted on the prevalence and genetic characteristics of the protozoan parasites. In the present study, 345 fecal samples from dogs were obtained from animal shelters in six provinces between January and December 2022. The prevalence of Cryptosporidium and G. duodenalis were molecularly identified at the 18S rRNA gene. Cryptosporidium canis isolates were subtyped at the gp60 locus, and G. duodenalis assemblages were identified at the tpi, bg and gdh loci. Overall, 6.67% of the fecal samples tested positive for Cryptosporidium spp. and two species were identified: C. canis (5.51%) and Cryptosporidium parvum (1.16%). Significant regional differences in prevalence were identified for C. canis. Subtyping analysis of C. canis isolates revealed a predominance of the subtype families XXa and XXe over XXb, and XXc. G. duodenalis was detected in 17.68% of the samples, and significant regional differences were identified; its prevalence was also significantly highest in diarrhoeic animals. Molecular characterization of G. duodenalis reveal that most isolates belonged to the canine-specific assemblages C and D. The present results can contribute to further insights into the prevalence and genotypes of Cryptosporidium and G. duodenalis in shelter dogs in South Korea.

Prevalence, geographic distribution and risk factors of Eimeria species on commercial broiler farms in Guangdong, China

BackgroundCoccidiosis is one of the most frequently reported diseases in chickens, causing a significant economic impact on the poultry industry. However, there have been no previous studies evaluating the prevalence of this disease in broiler farms in Guangdong province. Therefore, this study aims to conduct an epidemiological investigation into the occurrence of Eimeria species and associated risk factors in intensive management conditions across four regions in Guangdong province, China. A total of 394 fecal samples were collected from 89 broiler farms in Guangdong province. The prevalence of Eimeria species infection was determined using PCR, and the occurrence of Clostridium perfringens type A was assessed using quantitative real-time PCR.ResultsThe results showed an overall prevalence of 98.88% (88/89) at the farm level and 87.06% (343/394) at the flock level. All seven Eimeria species were identified, with E. acervulina (72.53%; 64/89), E. tenella (68.54%; 61/89), and E. mitis (66.29%; 59/89) at the farm level, and E. acervulina (36.55%; 144/394), E. mitis (35.28%; 139/394), and E. tenella (34.01%; 134/394) at the flock level. The predominant species combination observed was a co-infection of all seven Eimeria species (6.74%; 6/89), followed by a combination of E. acervulina, E. tenella, E. mitis, E. necatrix, E. brunetti, and E. maxima (5.62%, 5/89). A combination of E. acervulina, E. tenella, E. mitis, E. necatrix, E. brunetti, and E. praecox (4.49%; 4/89) was also observed at the farm level. Furthermore, the study identified several potential risk factors associated with the prevalence of Eimeria species, including farm location, chicken age, drinking water source, control strategy, and the presence of C. perfringens type A were identified as potential risk factors associated with prevalence of Eimeria species. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed a significant association between E. necatrix infection and both grower chickens (OR = 10.86; 95% CI: 1.92–61.36; p < 0.05) and adult chickens (OR = 24.97; 95% CI: 4.29–145.15; p < 0.001) compared to starter chickens at the farm level. Additionally, farms that used groundwater (OR = 0.27; 95% CI: 0.08–0.94; p < 0.05) were less likely to have E. maxima compared to those that used running water. At the flock level, the prevalence of E. tenella was significantly higher in the Pearl River Delta (OR = 2.48; 95% CI: 1.0–6.15; p = 0.05) compared to eastern Guangdong. Interestingly, flocks with indigenous birds were less likely to have E. brunetti (OR = 0.48; 95% CI: 0.26–0.89; p < 0.05) compared to flocks with indigenous crossbred birds. Furthermore, flocks that used anticoccidial drugs (OR = 0.09; 95% CI: 0.03–0.31; p < 0.001) or a combination of vaccines and anticoccidial drugs (OR = 0.06; 95% CI: 0.01–0.25; p < 0.001) were less likely to be positive for E. tenella compared to flocks that only used vaccines. Finally, flocks with C. perfringens type A infection were significantly more likely to have E. necatrix (OR = 3.26; 95% CI: 1.96–5.43; p < 0.001), E. tenella (OR = 2.14; 95% CI: 1.36–3.36; p < 0.001), E. brunetti (OR = 2.48; 95% CI: 1.45–4.23; p < 0.001), and E. acervulina (OR = 2.62; 95% CI: 1.69–4.06; p < 0.001) compared to flocks without C. perfringens type A.ConclusionsThis study conducted an investigation on the prevalence, distribution, and risk factors associated with Eimeria species infection in broiler chickens in Guangdong. The farm-level prevalence of Eimeria species was higher than the previous prevalence figures for other areas and countries. E. brunetti was identified at higher prevalence in Guangdong than previously survived prevalence in different regions in China. Farm location, chicken age, drinking water source, control strategy, and the presence of C. perfringens type A were considered as potential risk factors associated with prevalence of Eimeria species. It is imperative to underscore the necessity for further surveys to delve deeper into the occurrence of Eimeria species under intensive management conditions for different flock purposes.

Prevalence in Potato of 'Candidatus Arsenophonus Phytopathogenicus' and 'Candidatus Phytoplasma Solani' and Their Transmission via Adult Pentastiridius leporinus.

The planthopper Pentastiridius leporinus (Hempiptera: Cixiidae) is the main vector of two bacterial pathogens: the γ-proteobacterium 'Candidatus Arsenophonus phytopathogenicus' and the stolbur phytoplasma 'Candidatus Phytoplasma solani'. These pathogens cause the disease syndrome basses richesses (SBR) in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris), which reduces the yields and sugar content. In 2022, potato (Solanum tuberosum) fields were found to be colonized by P. leporinus, and the transmission of Arsenophonus was confirmed, resulting in symptoms like wilting, yellow leaves, and rubbery tubers. We monitored both pathogens in Southwest Germany in 2022 and 2023. This revealed their widespread presence in potato tubers, although there were differences in regional prevalence. The broad prevalence of Arsenophonus was maintained in 2023, whereas the prevalence of stolbur increased in most locations. We confirmed that P. leporinus adults can transmit both pathogens to potatoes, but neither pathogen reduced the germination rate of tubers, and no plants showed abnormal growth after germination. Arsenophonus was not detected in germinated shoots, but 5.4% contained stolbur, emphasizing the need for plant material testing to maintain phytosanitary conditions.

Lipoid Proteinosis, Its Symptoms, and Oral Manifestations: A Case Report and Review of Literature

Introduction: Lipoid proteinosis (LP), also known as Urbach-Wiethe disease, is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by the deposition of glycoproteins in mucous membranes, skin, and organs. Symptoms typically begin in childhood, persist throughout life, and encompass hoarseness, skin inflammation, scarring, and ulcers, resulting in a waxy appearance. Oral manifestations present as white plaques and ulcers, significantly impacting the oral cavity. To date, approximately 400 cases have been reported worldwide. Case Presentation: Herein, we present the case of a 36-year-old female diagnosed with LP who sought a dental implant evaluation. Her medical history revealed tooth decay, which necessitated extractions, and she had previously undergone maxillary implant placement and mandibular bone grafting. Upon general examination, the patient exhibited voice hoarseness, hyperkeratosis on the elbows and hands, and papules on the fingers. Oral examination revealed firm and fibrotic mucosa, papillomatosis, and limited mouth opening. Hyposalivation and the absence of the left parotid duct orifice were noted. No significant abnormalities were observed on the eyelids or face. Salivary gland assessment indicated a reduced flow rate (1 ml in 5 minutes). This case highlights the importance of conducting a comprehensive evaluation and tailoring management strategies to the individual needs of patients with LP. Conclusions: Lipoid proteinosis is a rare mucocutaneous disorder characterized by a slow and benign course, with varying prevalence in different regions. Early recognition of oral symptoms is crucial, as they often precede skin and neurological manifestations. Although typical oral signs usually include tongue firmness and an inability to protrude, these were not observed in the present case. Xerostomia and dental agenesis, though uncommon, have been reported in previous cases, consistent with the findings of the present case, although different areas of the oral cavity might be involved in some instances.

Selflessness: An International Comparative Analysis of a Much-Needed Public Value

The purpose of this paper is to investigate how selflessness is to be measured and how it is to be explained. Adopting an innovative approach to measure selflessness, we assess its prevalence in different regions across the world. We also investigate the factors that explain its emergence and how they interact in predicting it. The level of selflessness differs significantly across the world. Considering the factors predicting it, we find that the likelihood of an individual exhibiting selflessness largely depends on the region they live in. Workplace also plays a crucial role – in OECD countries, working in the public sector increases the propensity for selflessness, but it has the opposite effect in Africa.The research design involves a multivariate analysis of data from the World Values Survey using both straight-forward regression analyses and binary logistic regression.The main findings show that the impact of factors traditionally considered important, such as religious affiliation and employment in the public, private, or not-for-profit sectors, varies across regions. These region-specific interaction effects are seen, for instance, in the influence of one’s workplace on their propensity for selflessness. Public sector employees are significantly more likely to be selfless than their private sector counterparts. However, while working in the public sector increases the likelihood of being selfless in OECD countries, this relationship is reversed in Africa.In previous academic studies, little attention was paid to such interaction effects and the impacts of religious affiliation, public sector employment, gender, etc. were assumed to be stable all over the world. This study shows otherwise.As per practical implications, the results of our analyses suggest that research on values needs to be contextualized. This is particularly important when research aims at offering advice to practitioners. Our investigation has shown that the same factors that enhance selflessness in one part of the world may decrease its presence in other regions. A one-size-fits-all approach is therefore not adequate.

A Genome Resource for 192 Verticillium dahliae Isolates Infecting Potatoes Across Canada

Verticillium dahliae is an important soilborne pathogen causing Verticillium wilt. It is also the primary causal agent of potato early dying, a disease complex involving the root-lesion nematode. Here, we report the whole-genome sequencing of 192 isolates of V. dahliae originating from the major potato production areas across Canada. Our results yielded a resource of 277,010 genetic variations that will be useful for genetic analyses and revealed the presence of two major lineages, both present in all provinces but exhibiting differences in regional prevalence. Current Progress in Sporothrix brasiliensis Basic Aspects

Sporotrichosis is known as a subacute or chronic infection, which is caused by thermodimorphic fungi of the genus Sporothrix. It is a cosmopolitan infection, which is more prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions and can affect both humans and other mammals. The main etiological agents causing this disease are Sporothrix schenckii, Sporothrix brasiliensis, and Sporothrix globosa, which have been recognized as members of the Sporothrix pathogenic clade. Within this clade, S. brasiliensis is considered the most virulent species and represents an important pathogen due to its distribution and prevalence in different regions of South America, such as Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Paraguay, and Central American countries, such as Panama. In Brazil, S. brasiliensis has been of great concern due to the number of zoonotic cases that have been reported over the years. In this paper, a detailed review of the current literature on this pathogen and its different aspects will be carried out, including its genome, pathogen-host interaction, resistance mechanisms to antifungal drugs, and the caused zoonosis. Furthermore, we provide the prediction of some putative virulence factors encoded by the genome of this fungal species.

Survey for glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase enzyme deficiency among premarital attendanceinniava

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is considered the most frequent enzyme deficiency world wide, several reports have focused on its prevalence in different regions of Iraq. The current study was initiated to report on the frequency of G6PD deficiency among male attendance to premarital center in Ninava governorate in Northern Iraq. A total of 806 male individuals attending the Public Health Laboratory for routine premarital investigations were screened for G6PD deficiency using methemoglobin reduction test (MRT). The results were confirmed by quantitative enzyme assay for the cases that showed G6PD deficiency. A total (759) out of (806) were MRT negative , and (47) out of (806) were MRT positive with a prevalence of (5.8%).

Challenging the assumption of uniformity in patellar tendon structure: Regional patellar tendon morphology and mechanical properties in vivo.

Patellar tendons are assumed to be uniform in morphology and mechanical properties despite a higher prevalence of tendinopathies observed in the medial region. The purpose of this study was to compare the thickness, length, viscosity, and shear modulus of the medial, central, and lateral regions of healthy patellar tendons of young males and females in vivo. B-mode ultrasound and continuous shear wave elastography were performed on 35 patellar tendons (17 females, 18 males) over three regions of interest. A linear mixed-effects model (α = 0.05) was used to determine differences between the three regions and sexes followed by pairwise comparisons for significant findings. The lateral region (mean [95% confidence interval] = 0.34 [0.31-0.37] cm) was thinner compared with the medial (0.41 [0.39-0.44] cm, p < 0.001), and central (0.41 [0.39-0.44] cm, p < 0.001) regions regardless of sex. Viscosity was lower in the lateral (19.8 [16.9-22.7] Pa-s) versus medial region (27.4 [24.7-30.2] Pa-s, p = 0.001). Length had a region-by-sex interaction (p = 0.003) characterized by a longer lateral (4.83 [4.54-5.13] cm) versus medial (4.42 [4.12-4.72] cm) region in males (p < 0.001), but not females (p = 0.992). Shear modulus was uniform between regions and sexes. The thinner, and less viscous lateral patellar tendon may reflect the lower load the tendon experiences explaining the differences in regional prevalence of developing tendon pathology. Statement of Clinical Significance: Healthy patellar tendons are not uniform in morphology or mechanical properties. Considering regional tendon properties may help guide targeted interventions for patellar tendon pathologies.

Distribution of orthognathic surgery among the Swedish population: a retrospective register-based study

Objective The aim of this study was to provide a nationally representative assessment of orthognathic procedures performed in hospitalised patients in Sweden and study regional differences in prevalence, demographic parameters and hospitalisation time. Material and methods From the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare’s register, all the patients undergoing orthognathic surgery between 2010 and 2014 were identified. Outcome variables were categorised into: (1) Surgical methods and regional distribution (2) Demographic variations (3) Hospitalisation time. Results The population-prevalence-rate of orthognathic procedures over the 5-year period was 6.3 (SD 0.4) per 100,000 persons, a regional difference in the prevalence was found. Most common were Le Fort I osteotomies (43.4%) and bilateral sagittal split osteotomies (41.6%), 39% of the patients had bimaxillary surgery. The majority of the surgery was performed in the age group 19–29 (68.8%). The mean hospital stay was 2.2 days (SD = 0.9, range 1.7–3.4). A significant regional difference (p ≤ 0.001) was found in hospitalisation time for single-jaw versus bimaxillary surgery. Conclusions Regional differences in the distribution of orthognathic surgery and demographic variations were found in Sweden in 2010–2014. The underlying causes of variations are still unknown and request further investigation.

Prevalence of Olfactory Dysfunction with the Omicron Variant of SARS-CoV-2: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

The omicron variant is thought to cause less olfactory dysfunction than previous variants of SARS-CoV-2, but the reported prevalence differs greatly between populations and studies. Our systematic review and meta-analysis provide information regarding regional differences in prevalence as well as an estimate of the global prevalence of olfactory dysfunction based on 62 studies reporting information on 626,035 patients infected with the omicron variant. Our estimate of the omicron-induced prevalence of olfactory dysfunction in populations of European ancestry is 11.7%, while it is significantly lower in all other populations, ranging between 1.9% and 4.9%. When ethnic differences and population sizes are considered, the global prevalence of omicron-induced olfactory dysfunction in adults is estimated to be 3.7%. Omicron's effect on olfaction is twofold to tenfold lower than that of the alpha or delta variants according to previous meta-analyses and our analysis of studies that directly compared the prevalence of olfactory dysfunction between omicron and previous variants. The profile of the prevalence differences between ethnicities mirrors the results of a recent genome-wide association study that connected a gene locus encoding an odorant-metabolizing enzyme, UDP glycosyltransferase, to the extent of COVID-19-related loss of smell. Our analysis is consistent with the hypothesis that this enzyme contributes to the observed population differences.

Prevalence and incidence of type 1 diabetes in children aged 0-14 years old in New Zealand in 2021.

National prevalence and incidence data are important for understanding population trends and allocating health-care resources. We aimed to provide a current national snapshot of prevalence and annual incidence rates for children aged 0-14 with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in Aotearoa New Zealand and to identify differences associated with demographic variables. Paediatric diabetes centres across Aotearoa were invited to record anonymised demographic and diabetes data on children under their services between 1 October 2020 and 30 September 2021. National prevalence and incidence were calculated using usually resident population counts from the 2018 census. The effect of ethnicity on prevalence and incidence was assessed using Poisson regression. There were 1209 children aged 0-14 with T1D in October 2021. The national prevalence was 131/100 000 (95% confidence interval (CI) 124-139). European children had twice the prevalence as those of Māori or Pacific ethnicity (P < 0.001). There was no effect by gender (P=0.3) and prevalence predictably increased with age. The annualised incidence of T1D was 23/100 000 (95% CI 20-26). European children were 2.6 times as likely as Māori children to be diagnosed with T1D in that year (incidence rate ratio=2.6, 95% CI 1.7-4.2). Regional differences in prevalence and incidence were noted, potentially due to the ethnicity differences across regions. Unadjusted prevalence and incidence decreased with lower socio-economic status, likely due to an over-representation of non-Europeans living in the most deprived areas. T1D affects an ethnically diverse population in Aotearoa and important regional differences exist that may impact workforce planning.

Anti-asthmatic prescriptions in children with and without congenital anomalies: a European data linkage study.

ObjectivesAsthma is the most common chronic disease in childhood, yet little is known about rates of asthma and wheezing in children with congenital anomalies. This study explored the prevalence and risk of receiving anti-asthmatic prescriptions in children with congenital anomalies compared to children without anomalies in six European regions/countries. ApproachThis was a EUROlinkCAT population-based linkage cohort study involving children from 0-9 years of age born between 2000-2014. Congenital anomaly data from six EUROCAT registries were linked to births data in national/vital statistics and to electronic prescription databases. Prescription/pharmacy dispensing records across regions were standardised to a Common Data Model. Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical classification codes beginning with R03 were used to identify anti-asthmatic prescriptions. Random-effects meta-analyses were performed to identify both the relative risk (RR) of receiving &gt;1 anti-asthmatic prescription in a year relative to the reference group, and the heterogeneity of prevalence rates across registries and age group. ResultsA total of 5.1% of children with congenital anomalies and 4.9% of reference children were dropped from the study as they were not linked. Children with congenital anomalies (n=60,662) had a higher prevalence of &gt;1 anti-asthmatic prescription and a significantly higher risk of being prescribed anti-asthmatics (RR=1.41, 95% CI 1.35-1.48) compared to reference children (n=1,722,912). The increased risk was consistent across all age groups. Children with congenital anomalies were more likely to be prescribed beta-2 agonists (RR=1.71, 95% CI 1.60-1.83) and inhaled corticosteroids (RR=1.74, 95% CI 1.61-1.87). Children with oesophageal atresia, diaphragmatic hernia, genetic syndromes and chromosomal anomalies had over twice the risk of being prescribed anti-asthmatics compared to reference children. Regional differences in prevalence and risk of anti-asthmatic prescriptions were identified. ConclusionChildren aged &lt;10 years with congenital anomalies consistently had higher prevalence and risk of receiving &gt;1 anti-asthmatic prescription across age group and across European regions. This study demonstrates that information on the prevalence of anti-asthmatic prescriptions issued/dispensed can be obtained through data linkage to monitor changes in prevalence over time.

Genetic Diversity of Babesia canis Strains in Dogs in Lithuania.

Canine babesiosis is an emerging and rapidly expanding tick-borne disease in central and northeast Europe. In the last two decades, the endemic area of Babesia canis has expanded from central Europe to the Baltic region. This study aimed to investigate the genetic diversity of B. canis strains isolated from naturally infected dogs in different regions of Lithuania using PCR-RFLP and sequence analyses based on a partial region of 18S rRNA and Bc28.1 genes. Blood samples from 149 dogs suspected of having babesiosis were collected in Lithuania during 2016–2017. Based on PCR-RFLP profiles and two nucleotide substitutions observed in 18S rRNA gene sequences, three B. canis genotypes were identified in Lithuania—18S rRNA-A, 18S rRNA-B and 18S rRNA-A/B—with the A/B genotype predominating (83.9%). Based on the obtained PCR-RFLP profiles of the Bc28.1 gene, four B. canis genotypes were identified: Bc28.1-B (53.8%), Bc28.1-34 (20.8%), Bc28.1-A (17.9%), and Bc28.1-34/A or B (7.5%). Sequence analysis of the partial Bc28.1 gene revealed eighteen polymorphic sites and thirteen sequence variants among the Lithuanian samples. The B. canis genotypes obtained were detected with varying prevalences in different regions of Lithuania.

Nosemosis in Honeybees: A Review Guide on Biology and Diagnostic Methods

Nosema apis and Nosema ceranae are dangerous parasites of the honey bee (Apis mellifera). N. ceranae is more pathogenic and, nowadays, more widespread than N. apis. There are also cases of mixed infections or infections of only N. apis. Both N. apis and N. ceranae can lead to the weakening or death of A. mellifera colonies. It is crucial to make a fast and reliable diagnosis to monitor the disease and to start the correct treatment. Additionally, there is a need for further research on the pathogenicity of Nosema spp. and also on their prevalence in different regions of the world. In this paper, we present reliable diagnostic methods for Nosema spp. infection in honey bees and list the advantages and disadvantages of each method. We have also included basic information about nosemosis and the majority of diagnostic methods in order to provide a source of knowledge for veterinarians and researchers.

Omicron Sub-Lineages (BA.1.1.529 + BA.*) Current Status in Ecuador.

The Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 is the latest pandemic lineage causing COVID-19. Despite having a vaccination rate ≥85%, Ecuador recorded a high incidence of Omicron from December 2021 to March 2022. Since Omicron emerged, it has evolved into multiple sub-lineages with distinct prevalence in different regions. In this work, we use all Omicron sequences from Ecuador available at GISAID until March 2022 and the software Nextclade and Pangolin to identify which lineages circulate in this country. We detected 12 different sub-lineages (BA.1, BA.1.1, BA.1.1.1, BA.1.1.14, BA.1.1.2, BA.1.14, BA.1.15, BA.1.16, BA.1.17, BA.1.6, BA.2, BA.2.3), which have been reported in Africa, America, Europe, and Asia, suggesting multiple introduction events. Sub-lineages BA.1 and BA.1.1 were the most prevalent. Genomic surveillance must continue to evaluate the dynamics of current sub-lineages, the early introduction of new ones and vaccine efficacy against evolving SARS-CoV-2.

Modern aspects of recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (Literature review)

Recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC) is a widespread problem for today. Symptoms of the disease significantly reduce women life quality. Clinical sings of vaginal candidiasis are nonspecific. The most common method of diagnosis – microscopy of vaginal discharge, does not always provide enough information. Among the causative agents of candidiasis, Candida albicans and Candida non-albicans have different prevalence in different regions of the world. Resistance to antifungal drugs is increasing due to it widespread applying. Risk factors for RVVK are: antibiotic therapy, immunodeficiency conditions, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, contraceptives, corticosteroids, hormonal disorders of women, allergic diseases. Recent studies indicate the multifactorial cause of candidiasis, especially the imbalanced composition of the vaginal microflora and genetic predisposition. Resistance to antifungal drugs is increasing, especially to Fluconazole, that is most often applied in clinical practice. The role of immunoregulatory mechanisms is reflected in the reduced activity of immunity in the vagina. Changes in Toll-like receptor (TLR) genes have been reported in women with RVVC. Also, interlexins can lead to a prolonged inflammatory process in the vagina. Currently, polymorphism of the mannose-binding lectin gene in women with RVVK relevant topic for research. Spectrum of movement disorders: Experience of a one and half year of existence of the first specialized center in Senegal

BackgroundMovement disorders have different prevalence in different regions and they are little studied in Africa. ObjectivesEvaluate the prevalence and determine the spectrum of movement disorders in the first specialized center in Senegal. MethodsIt was a prospective study over on 18 months in adult outpatient clinic. Demographic, clinical, paraclinical data, including genetic test in collaboration with the Queen Square Institute of Neurology at UCL were collected. ResultsOne hundred and thirty four patients were followed up, representing a prevalence of 4.7%. Men represented 56% for a sex ratio of 1.3. The mean age of population was 47.7 ± 18 years with limits ranging from 16 to 81 years. Eighty-one patients (60.4%) had hyperkinetic and 53 patients (39.6%) had hypokinetic movements. Twenty-nine patients (21.6%) had tremors and 18 (13.4%) had dystonic movements. Ataxia and choreic movements were respectively in 11 (8.2%) and 10 patients (7.5%). Twenty-four patients (17.9%) were from a first-degree consanguineous. A genetic test on saliva samples was done in 16 patients (11.9%) and confirmed Huntington's disease in 8 patients of 6 families. Parkinson disease was the most frequent etiology (32.8%) followed by essential tremor (12.7%) and psychogenic tremor in 7.5%. Stroke accounted for 6% of the causes of MD (tremor, ballism, dystonia, ataxia and parkinsonism) and no etiology was found in 9%. ConclusionThe spectrum of movement disorders is very heterogeneous with a non-negligible frequency and diverse etiologies in neurological practice in Senegal.

Regional Differences in the Prevalence of Atopic Dermatitis among Schoolchildren in Japan and Its Associated Factors from 2006 to 2018

The trends in the prevalence of atopic dermatitis for each prefecture over recent years have not been investigated in Japan, and no studies investigating the factors associated with the prevalence using nationwide data have been conducted. We investigated the trends in the prevalence of atopic dermatitis among schoolchildren for each prefecture in Japan from 2006 to 2018 and identified the factors associated with regional differences in prevalence. The data on the atopic dermatitis prevalence in schoolchildren aged 6–17 years were collected as part of the School Health Statistics Research. The demographic, socioeconomic, medical, and environmental characteristics of the prefectures were examined for possible associations with the prevalence. The age-standardized prevalence rates of atopic dermatitis were calculated separately for boys and girls and by prefecture and year. We examined the associations between the age-standardized prevalence rates and prefectural characteristics using an ecological study. The age-standardized prevalence rates of atopic dermatitis tended to be stable for Japan as a whole, whereas the trend in the age-standardized prevalence rates differed across prefectures. In the regression analysis, the year was negatively associated and the number of medical clinics per 100,000 persons was positively associated with the age-standardized prevalence in girls. The taxable income per capita was positively associated with the age-standardized prevalence both in boys and in girls.
