On the regional-scale variability in flow duration curves in Peninsular India

Abstract. Peninsular India is a unique region with major mountain ranges that govern regional atmospheric circulation and precipitation variability, the monsoons, and regional geology at range of timescales and process scales. However, the landscape and climatic feature controls on streamflow variability at a regional scale using flow duration curves (FDCs) – compact descriptions of streamflow variability that offer a window into the multiple, interacting processes that contribute to streamflow variability – have received little attention. This study examines the suitability of the partitioning of (1) an annual streamflow FDC into seasonal FDCs and (2) a total streamflow FDC into fast- and slow-flow FDCs to unravel the process controls on FDCs at a regional scale, with application to low-gradient rivers flowing east from the Western Ghats in Peninsular India. The results indicate that bimodal rainfall seasonality and subsurface gradients explain the higher contribution of slow flow to total flow across the north–south gradient of the region. Shapes of fast and slow FDCs are controlled by recession parameters, revealing the role of climate seasonality and geological profiles, respectively. Systematic spatial variation across the north–south gradient is observed, highlighting the importance of the coherent functioning of landscape–hydroclimate settings in imparting a distinct signature of streamflow variability. The framework is useful to discover the role of time and process controls on streamflow variability in a region with seasonal hydro-climatology and hydro-geological gradients.

Evaluating the Alaska Blocking Index as an indicator of wildfire potential in Alaska's central eastern interior

AbstractIncreased Arctic air temperatures and evaporative fluxes have coincided with more frequent and destructive high‐latitude wildfires. Arctic fires impact ecosystems and people, especially at the community‐level by degrading air quality, destroying agriculture, and threatening life and property. Central Eastern Interior (CEI) Alaska is one such region that has recently experienced the effects of wildfire activity related to warming air temperatures. To improve our ability to identify fire weather events and assess their potential for extreme outbreaks at actionable lead times relevant to fire weather forecasters and managers, new metrics and approaches need to be established and applied toward understanding the physical mechanisms underlying such wildland fire characteristics. Our study uses a new, regional atmospheric circulation metric, the Alaska Blocking Index (ABI), to describe midtropospheric air pressure around Alaska, which is subsequently related to CEI fire weather conditions at the Predictive Service Area (PSA) scale in climatological and extreme events frameworks. Of note, during years of high fire activity, Build‐Up Index (BUI) values tend to be anomalously high during the duff and drought phases across the CEI PSAs, though comparatively lower BUI values are still associated with high fire activity in the Tanana Zone‐South (AK03S) PSA. Likewise, extreme BUI values are strongly tied to high ABI values and well‐defined upper‐air ridging circulation patterns in the duff and drought periods. The statistical skill of mean daily ABI values in the 6–10 day period preceding extreme duff period BUI values is modest (τ2 > 14%) in the Upper Yukon Valley (AK02) PSA, a hotbed of wildland fire activity. Extremes in ABI and CEI BUI often occur in tandem, yielding regional predictability of upper‐air weather patterns and extremes and underlying surface weather conditions, by statistical and/or dynamical forecast models, imperative for local community and governmental organizations to effectively manage and allocate Alaska's fire weather resources.

Spatiotemporal evolution patterns and underlying formation mechanisms of monsoon rainfall across eastern China: A complex network perspective

Quantifying the evolution patterns and forming causes of monsoon rainfall is essential for prediction and mitigation of resultant hydrometeorological hazards. This study proposed a complex network-based framework to investigate these aspects over eastern China throughout the monsoon season. Based on the extracted heavy precipitation events (HPEs) at each grid within the monsoon season and twenty segmented phases, event synchronization and complex networks were utilized to construct HPE synchronized networks and HPE delayed networks, respectively. The former were utilized to identify monsoon rainfall subregions over eastern China, and further investigate the evolution rules of monsoon rainfall and associated hazard risks across the monsoon season. The latter were employed to investigate the spatial propagation patterns of monsoon rainfall within eastern China and individual subregions during their respective rainy seasons. Furthermore, the driving mechanisms behind the spatial propagation of monsoon rainfall within various subregions were explored by diagnosing the typical spatial propagation periods of monsoon rainfall and relevant regional atmospheric circulation anomalies. Results show that there are ten monsoon rainfall subregions over eastern China. Across these subregions, the monsoon rainfall undergoes seven sequential stages, including three stationary periods, two abrupt northward jumps and one southward retreat. As phases progress, zones with high hazard risks migrate within South China (SC), Yangtze River Basin (YRB), and Liaohe River Basin (LRB) with area first increasing and then decreasing from mid-April to early August. Diverse spatial propagation patterns of monsoon rainfall within various subregions arise from variations in the surrounding atmospheric circulation systems, resulting in anomalous wind patterns and moisture distribution. These anomalies, in turn, foster favorable conditions for monsoon rainfall to propagate along anomalous water vapor transport pathways. These findings advance our understanding of monsoon systems and associated hazard risks, shedding new light on their predictability.

Dataset of stable isotopes of precipitation in the Eurasian continent

Abstract. Stable isotopes in precipitation can effectively reveal the process of atmospheric water circulation, serving as an effective tool for hydrological and water resource research, climate change, and ecosystem studies. The scarcity of stable isotope data in precipitation has hindered comprehension of the regional hydrology, climate, and ecology due to discontinuities on a temporal scale and unevenness on a spatial scale. To this end, we collated stable hydrogen and oxygen isotope data in precipitation from 842 stations in Eurasia from 1961 to 2022, totalling 51 752 data records. Stable isotopes in precipitation across various regions of Eurasia, as a whole, decrease with increasing latitude and distance from the coast. In the summer, stable isotopes in precipitation are relatively enriched, while in the winter, they are relatively depleted. In recent decades, the stable isotope values of Eurasian precipitation show an overall trend of increasing variation with the advancement of years, which is associated with global warming. Geographical location, underlying surface conditions, seasons, and atmospheric circulation are all factors that determine the characteristics of stable isotopes in precipitation. The dataset of stable isotopes in Eurasian precipitation provides a powerful tool for understanding changes in regional atmospheric water circulation and assists in conducting hydrological, meteorological, and ecological studies in related regions. Last Glacial Maximum climate and atmospheric circulation over the Australian region from climate models

Abstract. The Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; ∼21 kyr ago) was the most recent time that the Earth experienced global maximum ice volume and minimum eustatic sea level. The climate changes over the Australian region at the LGM remain uncertain, including the extent of cooling in the arid interior, changes in the regional atmospheric circulations such as the tropical monsoon and mid-latitude westerlies, and changes in the balance between precipitation and evaporation. In this study, 13 climate model simulations that were included in the Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project (PMIP) Phases 3 and 4 are used to investigate regional climate (temperature, precipitation, and wind) over Australia at the LGM. The model simulations are compared with existing proxy records and other modelling studies. All models simulate consistent annual and seasonal cooling over the Australian region (defined as 0–45° S, 110–160° E) at the LGM compared to pre-industrial, with a multi-model mean 2.9 °C decrease in annual average surface air temperature over land at the LGM compared to pre-industrial. Models simulate a range of LGM precipitation anomalies over the region. Simulated precipitation changes over tropical Australasia appear to be driven by changes in circulation and moisture transport, which vary greatly between models. Surface moisture balance calculated from precipitation minus evaporation shows little change over much of the Australian land area at the LGM. Changes in the strength and position of the mid-latitude westerlies are uncertain, with wide model disagreement. These results indicate that climate model simulations do not show a robust response in either tropical or mid-latitude circulation to LGM boundary conditions, suggesting that caution is required when interpreting model output in this region. Further analysis based on model evaluation and quantitative model–proxy comparison is required to better understand the drivers of LGM climate and atmospheric circulation changes in this region.

Eocene dry eolian system in the Jianchuan Basin, southeastern Tibetan Plateau: Implications for regional wind regime and paleoclimate

East Asia experienced a climatic transition from a zonal pattern (climate zones defined by latitude) to a monsoon-dominated pattern during the Cenozoic. However, hitherto little consideration has been paid to the atmospheric circulation of the planetary wind system that prevailed during the early uplift of the Tibetan Plateau, due to the lack of reliable proxies. Here, we conduct a study on the eolian successions from the Eocene Baoxiangsi Formation in the Jianchuan Basin, southeastern Tibetan Plateau to reconstruct regional atmospheric circulation and paleoclimate. Two facies associations are recognized in the eolian deposits of the Baoxiangsi Formation: a dominant eolian dune association and a subordinate interdune association. Eolian dune deposits are characterized by large-scale cross-stratified sets of strata composed internally of packages of grainflow, wind-ripple strata and pinstripe lamination. These packages of laminae and cross-stratified eolian dune sets are bounded internally by superimposition and reactivation surfaces and interdune surfaces, respectively. Interdune deposits are uncommon and composed dominantly of subcritical climbing translatent strata to form sets of strata and these are themselves bounded by interdune surfaces to form cosets of strata. The association of dominant eolian dune deposits, widely distributed interdune surfaces of great lateral extent (> 450 m) and that climb at a shallow but positive angle (< 1°) is consistent with the climbing dry eolian system. The commonly occurring superimposition surfaces indicate the presence of compound dunes (megadunes, draas). Based on the analysis of 715 dip–azimuth readings of foresets of eolian cross-beds, we reconstruct the prevailing wind directions: the paleowind in the northern basin flowed toward the northeast; in the southern basin it flowed toward the southwest. This wind regime indicates that the Jianchuan Basin was located at the zonal boundary between the westerlies and the trade winds, and the construction of the dry eolian system was controlled by the subtropical high-pressure belt during the middle–late Eocene. Following the accumulation of the dry eolian system, a monsoon climate regime gradually established itself and prevailed in the Yunnan Province; this expanded northward over time. This was closely related to the uplift of the central Tibetan Plateau and the retreat of the Paratethys ocean in the late Eocene.

How 2022 extreme drought influences the spatiotemporal variations of terrestrial water storage in the Yangtze River Catchment: Insights from GRACE-based drought severity index and in-situ measurements

Under global warming, extreme climatic events frequently occurred worldwide such as extreme drought and heavy flood. Analysis of drought and flood spatiotemporal evolution and physical mechanism is of great significance for future disaster warning and mitigation. In 2022, the Yangtze River Catchment (YRC) experienced an extreme drought, which profoundly affected the regional economy, ecological environment and anthropogenic activities. In this study, we quantified the spatiotemporal characteristics of terrestrial water storage anomalies (TWSA) response to this severe drought event using Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment-based drought severity index (GRACE-DSI), with the inspection of hydrological model and in-situ measurements. The results showed that the 2022 YRC drought first occurred in July at the upstream and midstream, then spread to downstream and finally occupied almost the whole YRC in August and ∼ 94% of the YRC in September. The effectiveness of GRACE-DSI for drought monitor can be validated by in-situ hydrological and meteorological observations. Good correlations among El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), precipitation anomalies (PA), and TWSA were found, demonstrating the regional atmospheric circulation anomaly was the driving factor of this extreme drought event, which triggered the changes in precipitation further to influence the pattern of terrestrial water storage. The consecutive La Niña events induced the extension of western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) and Iranian high, the precipitation deficiency in 2022 summer declined by ∼ 46% and ∼ 36% compared to 2020 and 2021 respectively, which was the main cause of the extreme drought.

Deciphering local and regional hydroclimate resolves contradicting evidence on the Asian monsoon evolution

The winter and summer monsoons in Southeast Asia are important but highly variable sources of rainfall. Current understanding of the winter monsoon is limited by conflicting proxy observations, resulting from the decoupling of regional atmospheric circulation patterns and local rainfall dynamics. These signals are difficult to decipher in paleoclimate reconstructions. Here, we present a winter monsoon speleothem record from Southeast Asia covering the Holocene and find that winter and summer rainfall changed synchronously, forced by changes in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. In contrast, regional atmospheric circulation shows an inverse relation between winter and summer controlled by seasonal insolation over the Northern Hemisphere. We show that disentangling the local and regional signal in paleoclimate reconstructions is crucial in understanding and projecting winter and summer monsoon variability in Southeast Asia.

Sea Surface Temperature Changes Reflected by Diatoms in the P6-10 Core from 1893 to 2013 from Prydz Bay, Antarctica

Identification and analysis was conducted on the diatoms from the 19 cm sediment of the P6-10 core, drilled from China’s 29th Antarctic Expedition, to attempt to semi-quantitatively reconstruct the annual sea surface temperature (SST) of Prydz Bay from 1893 to 2013. There were 30 species within the 12 genera of diatoms found, and the main contributors were Fragilariopsis curta, F. cylindrus, F. sublinearis, F. ritscheri, and Thalassiosira antarctica. They were divided into three categories based on their ecological affinity. The percentages of four specific species, i.e., F. curta, F. cylindrus, F. ritscheri, and F. separanda, which might be low SST indicators, were added together to represent the SST of Prydz Bay. With the help of cluster analysis, diatom assemblages were divided into diatom zones. Therefore, SST changes were divided into five stages by both the percentage of those four diatom species and the diatom zones: the high-temperature stage from 1893 to 1903, the cooling stage from 1903 to 1936, the stable and warm stage from 1936 to 1983, the low-temperature stage from 1983 to 1996, and the temperature rising stage from 1996 to 2013. On the multidecadal scale, SST change was affected by adjustments to solar radiation. On the contrary, the ENSO events mainly affected SST on the interannual scale. In addition, regarding the unique geographical environment (such as regional atmospheric circulation and a wind field) in Prydz Bay, volcanic eruptions and the like also played important roles in some exceptional periods.

Amplified surface warming in the south-west Pacific during the mid-Pliocene (3.3–3.0 Ma) and future implications

Abstract. Based on Nationally Determined Contributions concurrent with Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) 2-4.5, the IPCC predicts global warming of 2.1–3.5 ∘C (very likely range 10–90th percentile) by 2100 CE. However, global average temperature is a poor indicator of regional warming and global climate models (GCMs) require validation with instrumental or proxy data from geological archives to assess their ability to simulate regional ocean and atmospheric circulation, and thus, to evaluate their performance for regional climate projections. The south-west Pacific is a region that performs poorly when GCMs are evaluated against instrumental observations. The New Zealand Earth System Model (NZESM) was developed from the United Kingdom Earth System Model (UKESM) to better understand south-west Pacific response to global change, by including a nested ocean grid in the south-west Pacific with 80 % greater horizontal resolution than the global-scale host. Here, we reconstruct regional south-west Pacific sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) for the mid-Pliocene warm period (mPWP; 3.3–3.0 Ma), which has been widely considered a past analogue with an equilibrium surface temperature response of +3 ∘C to an atmospheric CO2 concentration of ∼350–400 ppm, in order to assess the warming distribution in the south-west Pacific. This study presents proxy SSTs from seven deep sea sediment cores distributed across the south-west Pacific. Our reconstructed SSTs are derived from molecular biomarkers preserved in the sediment – alkenones (i.e. U37K′ index) and isoprenoid glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (i.e. TEX86 index) – and are compared with SSTs reconstructed from the Last Interglacial (125 ka), Pliocene Model Intercomparison Project (PlioMIP) outputs and transient climate model projections (NZESM and UKESM) of low- to high-range SSPs for 2090–2099 CE. Mean interglacial equilibrium SSTs during the mPWP for the south-west Pacific sites were on average 4.2 ∘C (1.8–6.1 ∘C likely range) above pre-industrial temperatures and show good agreement with model outputs from NZESM and UKESM under mid-range SSP 2–4.6 conditions. These results highlight that not only is the mPWP an appropriate analogue when considering future temperature change in the centuries to come, but they also demonstrate that the south-west Pacific region will experience warming that exceeds that of the global mean if atmospheric CO2 remains above 350 ppm.

Temporal and Spatial Variations of Potential and Actual Evapotranspiration and the Driving Mechanism over Equatorial Africa Using Satellite and Reanalysis-Based Observation

This study investigated the actual evapotranspiration (AET) and potential evapotranspiration (PET) seasonality, trends, abrupt changes, and driving mechanisms with global sea surface temperature (SST) and atmospheric circulation patterns over Equatorial Africa (EQA) during 1980–2020. The spatiotemporal characteristics of mean ET were computed based on a 40-year average at annual and seasonal scales. The Mann-Kendall statistical test, the Sen slope test, and the Bayesian test were used to analyze trends and detect abrupt changes. The results showed that the mean annual PET (AET) for 1980–2020 was 110 (70) mm. Seasonal mean PET (AET) values were 112 (72) in summer, 110 (85) in autumn, 109 (84) in winter, and 110 (58) in spring. The MK test showed an increasing (decreasing) rate, and the Sen slope identified upward (downward) at a rate of 0.35 (0.05) mm yr−10. The PET and AET abrupt change points were observed to happen in 1995 and 2000. Both dry and wet regions showed observed weak (strong) correlation coefficient values of 0.3 (0.8) between PET/AET and climate factors, but significant spatiotemporal differences existed. Generally, air temperature, soil moisture, and relative humidity best explain ET dynamics rather than precipitation and wind speed. The regional atmospheric circulation patterns are directly linked to ET but vary significantly in space and time. From a policy perspective, these findings may have implications for future water resource management.

Moisture Sources and Rainfall δ18O Variability over the Central Andes of Peru—A Case Study from the Mantaro River Basin

The Mantaro River Basin is one of the most important regions in the central Peruvian Andes in terms of hydropower generation and agricultural production. Contributions to better understanding of the climate and hydrological dynamics are vital for this region and constitute key information to support regional water security and socioeconomic resilience. This study presents eight years of monthly isotopic precipitation information (δ18O, Dxs) collected in the Mantaro River Basin. The isotopic signals were evaluated in terms of moisture sources, including local and regional climatic parameters, to interpret their variability at monthly and interannual timescales. It is proposed that the degree of rainout upstream and the transport history of air masses, also related to regional atmospheric features, are the main factors influencing the δ18O variability. Moreover, significant correlations with precipitation amount and relative humidity imply that local processes in this region of the Andes also exert important control over isotopic variability. Two extreme regional climate events (the 2010 drought and the 2017 coastal El Niño) were evaluated to determine how regional atmospheric circulation affects the rainfall isotope variability. Based on these results, recommendations for hydroclimate studies and paleoclimate reconstructions are proposed in the context of the Mantaro River Basin. This study intends to encourage new applications considering geochemical evidence for hydrological studies over the central Andean region.

Impacts of East Asian winter monsoon circulation on interannual variability of winter haze days in Guangdong Province

Haze days in Guangdong Province (GD) occur mainly in winter, with the highest number of moderate/severe haze days occurring in January. The interannual variability of winter haze days in GD is closely related to the Siberian High, the Aleutian Low, the East Asian Trough, the 850-hPa meridional wind over eastern China, and the 200-hPa East Asian Jet. We construct a winter comprehensive circulation index (WCIDX) to express the joint effects of the above regional-scale circulations on haze days in GD. The positive phase of WCIDX is closely linked to the Eurasian teleconnection pattern, which induces the abnormal southerly winds, high temperatures, and enhanced precipitation over GD by modulating the regional atmospheric circulations, localized meteorological conditions (i.e., enhanced lower specific humidity, reduced planetary boundary layer height, decreased surface wind speed, and enhanced low-level atmospheric inversion) conductive to a higher haze in GD. In addition, the positive phase of the WCIDX favors enhancement of the positive 850-hPa Eady growth rate (EGR) over the mid–high-latitude areas of East Asia, which enhances atmospheric baroclinity and results in a northward shift of the East Asian Jet. Pollutants accumulated over the Indochina Peninsula are advected to GD by the southwesterly airflows. It was found that enhanced horizontal warm advection, adiabatic heating, and diabatic heating provide conditions favorable for low-level atmospheric inversion.

Storylines for future changes of the North Atlantic jet and associated impacts on the UK

AbstractClimate projections for the UK exhibit substantial uncertainty, and this uncertainty is a hindrance to robust and timely decision making on both adaptation and mitigation policy issues. A large part of the uncertainty is associated with dynamical changes of the regional atmospheric circulation rather than thermodynamic changes which are better constrained by model simulations. Of particular importance for the UK is the extent to which the North Atlantic jet will change over coming decades and the impact this will have on weather and climate in the region. In this article, we propose the use of jet‐based storylines for assessing and communicating uncertainty in climate projections for the UK, wherein changes in each impact are explicitly conditioned on changes in the North Atlantic jet. This approach provides a framework for evaluating the impacts associated with a range of plausible future climate outcomes for the UK, including outcomes that may not be well represented in the current generation of climate models, and for communicating these potential outcomes. We construct a simple yet useful set of future jet storylines for both summer and winter and for 2°C and 4°C global warming levels and illustrate the utility of the approach by evaluating the impact of each jet storyline on future changes in UK precipitation. In doing so, we demonstrate that the relationships between the jet and UK precipitation are consistent between observed interannual variability and projected changes. This finding increases our confidence in projecting changes in UK precipitation associated with each storyline.

Tree-ring δ18Ocellulose variations in two Nothofagus species record large-scaleclimatic signals in the South American sector of the Southern Ocean

In recent decades, southernmost South America (50–56° S) has experienced marked climate change (regional warming, decreased precipitation, reduced snow cover, and increased frequency of heat waves) related to variations in atmospheric circulation over varied timescales. In this paper, we develop oxygen isotopes from tree-ring cellulose (δ18OTRC) as a proxy for climate and atmospheric circulation in order to extend the regional meteorological record to deeper time intervals. Our work focuses on Nothofagus forests in two areas: (i) deciduous N. pumilio forest in the steppe transition zone near Punta Arenas and (ii) humid evergreen N. betuloides forest in the Navarino Island region. To investigate the potential for reconstructing palaeoclimate, δ18OTRC variations were correlated with local climate parameters as well as regional (Amundsen Sea Low, ASL) and hemispheric (Antarctic Oscillation, AAO) atmospheric circulation modes for the last 60 years. N. betuloides δ18OTRC variations show an overall positive trend, indicating isotopic enrichment over the study period, whereas no trend is recorded for the N. pumilio record. The strongest relationships with climate, together with the widest spatial representativeness, occur in the N. betuloides chronology during the growing season (spring to austral summer) and extend spatially from mid to high latitudes. In contrast, the sensitivity of the records is limited to summer months, and spatial correlations are much more limited. In addition, the N. betuloides record shows greater potential for reconstructing local climate features such as soil water (r = − 0.76), wind speed (r = 0.69), and precipitation (r = − 0.66), as well as regional (ASL, r = − 0.80) and hemispheric (AAO, r = 0.77) patterns of extratropical atmospheric circulation. Overall, we conclude that the N. betuloides record represents the most valuable tree-ring climate proxy for southernmost South America over past centuries.

On the Seasonal and Spatial Dependence of Extreme Warm Days in Antarctica

AbstractThe spatial distribution of trends in temperature extremes over Antarctica remains largely unknown. Here we investigate the seasonal and spatial characteristics of extreme warm occurrence across Antarctica. The Antarctic inland areas show significant positive trends in the number of extreme warm days in austral spring and summer. The trends in the seasonal mean of daily maximum temperature show strong coherence with the trends in extreme warm occurrences. In addition, the long‐term longwave radiation, water vapor flux and regional atmospheric circulation changes are closely connected to the trends of extreme warm days in all seasons outside of summer; the summer longwave radiation and interior wind trends show little coherence with warm extreme trends, indicating other processes at play driving extreme warm days in summer.

Signals of northward propagating monsoon intraseasonal oscillations (MISOs) in the RegCM4.7 CORDEX-CORE simulation over South Asia domain

Northward propagating summer monsoon intraseasonal oscillations (MISOs) in the Indian Ocean region remain poorly understood and difficult to predict. Here we examine a free-running high-resolution regional atmospheric model (RegCM4.7 with 25 km resolution), forced distantly at the boundaries by atmospheric observations (ERA-Interim, 0.75 $$^{\circ }$$ ) and forced locally by observed sea-surface temperature (SST) over the period 1979–2016, to assess its ability to reproduce key aspects of these MISOs. We find that the model MISO exhibits spatial structures and northward propagation characteristics broadly similar to observed MISO when confining the analysis to the 25–90 day period band. The MISO precipitation anomalies are then shown to be consistent with previously known observed relationships to broad-scale sea-level pressure patterns, Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) positioning, and changes in the regional Hadley Cell component. The total simulated seasonal (JJAS) rainfall anomalies over India are not significantly correlated with observations, indicating that intrinsic variations in the regional model atmosphere dominate most of the precipitation variability. However, the bandpass-filtered MISO anomalies surprisingly exhibit a significant correlation (0.61) with observations. This suggests that instabilities in the regional broad-scale atmospheric circulation, e.g., linked to the ITCZ position or strength, may be partly controlled by the large-scale atmospheric flows specified at the domain boundaries and/or that specified local SST anomalies may help to guide some fraction of the developing model MISO to follow observations. This result motivates further research on MISO initiation and development using this type of regional atmospheric model.

Formation and evolution of the Asian landscape during the Cenozoic

&lt;p&gt;Asia has a unique set of landscapes, notably characterized by the highest plateau in the world, the strongest monsoon circulation, and an immense arid region. When and how this landscape was formed have long been investigated, but explanations remain elusive. In this paper, through a synthesis of both terrestrial and marginal marine sedimentary records and numerical simulation analyses, we propose that tectonic uplift/deformation and global cooling during the Cenozoic have controlled the evolution of Asian topography and climate, respectively, and, the Asian landscape. The Asian landscape has undergone three main stages of evolution, &lt;i&gt;viz&lt;/i&gt;: development of low-relief topography and warm-dry climate during the Eocene (~50-34 Ma); emergence of high relief topography in the southwest, along with a diverse range of landforms elsewhere, associated with a warm monsoon-arid climate coupling system during the Oligocene to early Pliocene (34-3.0 Ma); and development of the typical Asian summer and winter monsoon circulation and present landscape since the late Pliocene, accompanied by significant global cooling. Our analyses reveal that the distribution of river catchments, flora, fauna and soils are controlled by tectonic uplift/deformation and palaeoclimate changes. Stepwise evolution of the Asian landscape since ~50 Ma was driven by tectonic deformation and global temperature changes, each of which may play different role(s) in landscape evolution. For instance, the India-Asia collision played a vital role in the formation of the Asian topographic configuration in the middle Eocene, which generated regional atmospheric circulation. On the other hand, global cooling during the late Pliocene played an important role in generating the modern-like Asian landscape including the rapid accumulation of loess deposits, strengthening of the Asian monsoon circulation, and the evolution of modern topography. To summarize, we broadly propose a three-stage history of landscape evolution in Asia during the Cenozoic. The detailed processes of Asian landscape evolution and the specific roles of tectonism and global temperature in controlling Asian landscapes and palaeoclimate evolution need to be further investigated.&lt;/p&gt;
