Populist securitization of migration: The anti-immigrant Zafer Party example in Türkiye

ABSTRACT Although Türkiye is the largest refugee-hosting country in the world, the Zafer Party’s (ZP) (English: Victory Party) discourse on migration as the pioneer representative of the European-style anti-immigrant right party example has been under-studied. To address this gap, this research examines the discursive practices of the ZP through the lens of populist securitization. It focuses on revealing how the ZP employs a people-centred appeal to securitization, explaining how the people are located within its populist discourse as a threatened object of reference and actor. In this way, it empirically contributes to the burgeoning literature bridging between populism and securitization theory. To this end, it conducts an extensive qualitative frame analysis of the party’s manifesto, programme, press releases, public speeches uttered by party leader Ümit Özdağ. The time frame of the research is designated as starting from the establishment of the ZP, i.e. 26 August 2021, to the Presidential and Parliamentary Elections in Türkiye, i.e. 14 May 2023. The paper finds out that ZP combines populist and nationalist appeals by creating vertical (down/up) and horizontal (in/out) antagonisms, exhibiting parallels with similar tendencies in its European counterparts.

The Mental Health of Refugees and Forcibly Displaced People: A Narrative Review

BACKGROUND: One of the pressing global issues today is the matter of refugees and forcibly displaced people migration. Refugee or forcibly displaced status has a significant impact on a person's mental health, with a high risk of developing depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and psychotic disorders. AIM: To conduct a literature review and evaluate the mental health status of refugees and forcibly displaced people due to military action METHODS: The search of literature was conducted without any restrictions on the publication date, with a focus on articles from the past two decades. The search was conducted in the Google Scholar and PubMed databases using the following keywords and phrases: “migration”, “migrants”, “refugees”, “forcibly displaced people”, “mental health”, “mental disorder”, “psychiatric disorders”. This analysis included studies that discussed and evaluated the social, psychological, and clinical aspects of migration. The review included original research and meta-analyses published in English, Russian, and Spanish. Descriptive analysis was applied to summarize the results. RESULTS: The literature review showed that global migration levels have reached a high point, and this trend continues due to the existing geopolitical conditions. Even limited and difficult-to-compare epidemiological data demonstrate that more than a quarter of migrants suffer from mental disorders. These primarily include depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorders. Apart from creating and exacerbating problems for the refugees and forcibly displaced people themselves, they also pose serious challenges to the social services and healthcare systems of refugee-hosting countries. The literature review demonstrated that forced displacement plays a role in the development of mental disorders, and also emphasizes the significance of several associated factors. CONCLUSION: This review emphasizes the urgent need for standardizing screening methods for refugees and forcibly displaced people, creating unified approaches to diagnostic evaluation, as well as specialized training for mental health professionals. Large-scale programs are needed to support and implement sustainable global mental health measures in the countries affected by hostilities.

Predictors of Traumatization Among Humanitarian Aid Workers Working With Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Türkiye.

Refugees and asylum-seekers flee their countries due to conflict, violence or persecution and seek safety in another country. Professionals working with refugees in host countries are being exposed to the narratives of their traumatic experiences, an important risk factor for vicarious posttraumatic stress. The current study examined predictors for traumatic stress in humanitarian aid workers working with refugees and asylum seekers in Türkiye. We surveyed 156 participants (67.3% women) from various disciplines (psychologists, social workers, interpreters, lawyers etc.) to examine their traumatic stress, resilience and stress coping mechanisms. We used Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale (STSS), Adult Resilience Measure (ARM) and Coping Styles Inventory (CSI) for data collection. In this cross-sectional study, data were collected online from participants who were contacted through snowball sampling method, starting with the participants working with refugees at public agencies and NGOs. The regression analyses showed that the level of traumatic stress is predicted by feelings of fatigue, number of years worked with the refugees, presence of previous psychological problems and being a social worker. The "relational resources" subdimension of resilience and "helpless coping style" are also significantly associated with traumatic stress. Considering the rapidly developing phenomenon of migration all over the world, the findings of the current study could contribute to improve protective and preventive interventions for the psychological wellbeing of humanitarian aid workers.

Digital solidarity and adaptation: applications developed for refugees in host countries.

The scale of international migration is growing day by day, and the issue of refugees constitutes a significant agenda item for all countries. In today's digital age, characterized by technological advancements, refugees are also benefiting from the advantages of technology. With various applications downloaded to their mobile phones, refugees can directly access all kinds of information about the countries they are heading to and even communicate with each other to share experiences. This study explores how mobile phone applications can be developed to serve the refugees in the familiarizing themselves with the receiving culture. In the study, a total of 10 applications prepared for refugees on Android and iOS platforms, selected by random sampling and purposeful sampling methods, were examined. These applications were analyzed using the qualitative content analysis method. As a result, when the applications developed in host countries were examined, it was observed that the most needed basic information for refugees, such as housing, education, finding a job, health, language, daily words, legal documents, rules, and fundamental rights, was provided. Additionally, in the 10 refugee applications examined, Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) were used as locative media for mapping locations. Location-based data and maps that show where refugees are located are extremely important for them. These maps are believed to help reduce stress, make them feel safe, and facilitate the adaptation process by showing refugees the nearest shelters, dining places, hospitals, transportation, and asylum locations.

(Non-state) actors in internal bordering and differential inclusion: Syrian refugees’ housing experience in Turkey

ABSTRACT Turkey, as the largest refugee-hosting country, provides insights into the externalization of European borders and the internalization of its own borders. Oscillating between open-door and strict-border policies, alongside the political inactiveness of public authorities and CSOs governing Syrian mobility, Turkey reveals crucial dynamics. Focusing on Syrian refugees’ housing in a refugee hub of Izmir, this study unravels internal bordering and explores its rationales and the involvement of non-state actors. Syrian refugees encounter three internal bordering mechanisms affecting their housing inclusion: selective overpricing, ethnic filtering and arbitrary interrogations. These differential inclusion practices, led by market actors (landlords and realtors), ethnic networks, and street-level bureaucrats (mukhtars and municipal officers), are driven by the prevalence of anti-refugee sentiment in Turkey, where Syrians are perceived as unwanted or undeserving. The internal bordering mechanisms are rooted in ethnic, economic, cultural, and security-based rationales, influenced by the personal interests and socio-economic backgrounds of the involved actors.

Assessing the integration of refugee health data into national health information systems in Jordan, Lebanon, and Uganda

BackgroundWith the increasing number of protracted refugee crises globally, it is essential to ensure strong national health information systems (HIS) in displacement settings that include refugee-sensitive data and disaggregation by refugee status. This multi-country study aims to assess the degree of integration of refugee health data into national HIS in Jordan, Lebanon, and Uganda and identify the strengths and weaknesses of their national HIS in terms of collecting and reporting on refugee-related health indicators.MethodsThe study employs a comparative country analysis approach using a three-phase framework. The first phase involved reviewing 4120 indicators compiled from global health organizations, followed by a multi-stage refinement process, resulting in 45 indicators distributed across five themes. The second phase consisted of selecting relevant criteria from the literature, including data sources, annual reporting, disaggregation by refugee status, refugee population adjustments, accuracy, and consistency. The third phase involved assessing data availability and quality of the selected indicators against these criteria.ResultsOur analysis uncovered significant challenges in assessing the health status of refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, and Uganda, primarily stemming from limitations in the available health data and indicators. Specifically, we identified significant issues including incomplete local data collection with reliance on international data sources, fragmented data collection from various entities leading to discrepancies, and a lack of distinction between refugees and host populations in most indicators. These limitations hinder accurate comparisons and analyses. In light of these findings, a set of actionable recommendations was proposed to guide policymakers in the three countries to improve the integration of refugee health data into their national HIS ultimately enhancing refugees’ well-being and access to healthcare services.ConclusionThe current status of refugee-related health data in Jordan, Lebanon, and Uganda indicates the need for improved data collection and reporting practices, disaggregation by refugee status and better integration of refugee health data into national HIS to capture the health status and needs of refugees in host countries. Key improvement strategies include establishing a centralized authority for consistent and efficient data management, fostering transparent and inclusive data governance, and strengthening workforce capacity to manage refugee health data effectively.

Progression of Employment and Livelihoods Policies and Regulations for the Protracted Displacement of Refugees in Host Countries: Syrian Refugees in Jordan as a Case Study

Objectives: Three major research questions have been raised in this study to explain issues related to the employment and livelihood for Syrian refugees in Jordan and their experience to the existing employment and livelihood policies and regulations. Methods: To do so, the quantitative survey has been conducted with 390 respondents and qualitative interviews with 5 respondents to derive an outcome of the study. Results: The study concluded that the livelihood and employment of Syrian refugees in Jordan is a difficult problem that involves several different aspects. Conclusions: To address these difficulties, there will need to be a concerted and ongoing effort by the Jordanian government, as well as from international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and players from the private sector.

Boundary construction and education: un/belonging among Somali refugee students in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

ABSTRACT This study analyzes how un/belonging is experienced by Somali refugee students in public primary schools in the Bole Michael area of Addis Ababa. Drawing on data from interviews and focus group discussions, we place these micro-level experiences of un/belonging in conversation with the current Ethiopian policy for the inclusion of refugees in the national education system. While the inclusion of refugees is now the status quo for large refugee-hosting countries in the Global South, we find that this policy often ignores the specificities of refugees’ educational experiences in particular places. Somali refugees describe public primary schools as ‘difficult’ and ‘alien’ to their culture, while school authorities and teachers characterize Somali learners as ‘others’ who should, but fail to, assimilate. Our findings indicate the need for policies and practices to engage in negotiations between refugees and public schools to move beyond foundational efforts of providing access to schools to goals of learning and belonging.

Exploring refugees' experience of accessing dental health services in host countries: a scoping review.

Refugees often face worse oral health outcomes, such as periodontal diseases and dental caries in host countries due to barriers including language and cultural differences, institutional discrimination, and restricted use of dental health services. This scoping review aims to map and summarise the available studies on refugees' experience of accessing dental health services in the host countries, to identify the main characteristics of the dental health services that refugees access and to explore the barriers and enablers to navigate the dental health service system in their host countries. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) framework was adopted. PubMed, Scopus, Assia, CINAHL and Social Services Abstract were searched. A search strategy was developed using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms and a combination of search operators and syntax used in MEDLINE were adopted for the remaining databases. Data were synthesised using thematic analysis. Fourteen articles were included. Most studies used qualitative methods and Australia seemed to be the country with the highest number of publications surrounding this topic. The included studies showed that refugees frequently encountered substantial obstacles when attempting to access dental services in host countries. Numerous barriers such as language barriers, cultural differences, and lack of health insurance or financial support hindered refugees' ability to access these services. Additionally, many refugees possessed limited knowledge of the dental care system in their new country. As a result of untreated dental problems, refugees suffered from pain and other health complications. This scoping review explored the challenges refugees have experienced in accessing dental health services in host countries, which included the key barriers such as affordability, accessibility, accommodation, availability, awareness, and acceptability. The scarcity of relevant research highlighted the need for a more comprehensive understanding of refugees' experiences accessing dental health services in host countries. Limited data were identified regarding evidence focusing on the characteristics of dental services accessed by refugees in host countries.

Economic Integration between Refugee Settlements and Host Communities

With 1.5 million refugees and a refugee policy that promotes long-term settlement and self-sufficiency, understanding the impact of refugees on host communities in Uganda is a critical issue. Of particular concern – not only in Uganda, but all refugee-hosting countries – is the economic impact of refugees; while refugees attract aid money into the local economy, the mass distribution of in-kind goods can drive local prices and wages down. Moreover, little is known about the role of economic integration between refugees and hosts, especially in situations of protracted displacement. Using a mixed methods approach with panel survey data and semi-structured interviews, we show significant integration between refugees and hosts that is widely perceived as positive. Results indicate that refugees provide goods and services at lower costs to hosts and often of higher quality than found elsewhere. Yet, these interactions, especially through markets, create competition and may lower prices and wages since proximity to refugees is associated with lower host labor participation and earnings from crop production. The net welfare effect for hosts of being close to refugees are found to be ambiguous.

Assessing local service providers' needs for scaling up MHPSS interventions for Ukrainian refugees: Insights from Poland, Slovakia, and Romania.

Providing Mental Health and Psychosocial Support interventions (MHPSS) for forcibly displaced Ukrainians in Central and Eastern Europe poses numerous challenges due to various socio-cultural and infrastructural factors. This qualitative study explored implementation barriers reported by service providers of in-person and digital MHPSS for Ukrainian refugees displaced to Poland, Romania and Slovakia due to the war. In addition, the study aimed to generate recommendations to overcome these barriers. Semi-structured Free List and Key Informant interviews were conducted using the Design, Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation protocol with 18 and 13 service providers, respectively. For in-person interventions, barriers included stigma, language, shortage of MHPSS providers, lack of financial aid and general lack of trust among refugees. For digital MHPSS, barriers included generational obstacles, lack of therapeutic relationships, trust issues, and lack of awareness. Recommendations included advancing public health strategies, organizational interventions, building technical literacy and support, enhancing the credibility of digital interventions and incorporating MHPSS into usual practice. By implementing the recommendations proposed in this study, policymakers, organizations and service providers can work towards enhancing the delivery of MHPSS and addressing the mental health needs of Ukrainian refugees in host countries, such as Poland, Romania and Slovakia.

Ukrainian migrants’ and war refugees’ admissions to hospital: evidence from the Polish Nationwide General Hospital Morbidity Study, 2014–2022

BackgroundConsidering the rapid influx of Ukrainian migrants and war refugees into Poland, the knowledge of their health condition is becoming increasingly important for health system policy and planning.The aim of the study was to assess war-related changes in the frequency and structure of hospitalizations among Ukrainian migrants and refugees in Poland.MethodsThe study is based on the analysis of hospital admission records of Ukrainian patients, which were collected in the Nationwide General Hospital Morbidity Study from 01.01.2014 to 31.12.2022.ResultsIn the study period, 13,024 Ukrainians were hospitalized in Poland, 51.7% of whom had been admitted to hospital after February 24, 2022. After the war broke out, the average daily hospital admissions augmented from 2.1 to 21.6 person/day. A noticeable increase in the share of women (from 50% to 62%) and children (from 14% to 51%) was also observed. The average age of patients fell from 33.6 ± 0.2 years to 24.6 ± 0.3 years. The most frequently reported hospital events among the migrants until 23.02.2022 were injuries (S00-T98) – 26.1%, pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium (O00-O99) – 18.4%, and factors influencing health status and contact with health services (Z00-Z99) – 8.4%. After the war started, the incidence of health problems among migrants and war refugees changed, with pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium (O00-O99) being the most common – 14.9%, followed by abnormal clinical and lab findings (R00-R99) – 11.9%, and infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99) – 11.0%.ConclusionsOur findings may support health policy planning and delivering adequate healthcare in refugee-hosting countries.

Scoping Review of Linguistically Responsive Practices for Young Children Who Are Refugees

Young refugee populations continue to grow. This scoping review aims to identify and summarize studies of programs that provide linguistically responsive practices for children who are refugees. Secondary aims of this review are: (a) to identify the gaps in the literature, and (b) to suggest future research and policy directions. By studying key features of linguistically responsive practices for children who are refugees, we can better understand the important components of a high-quality inclusive and equitable environment for all children, including those with minority language backgrounds. We conducted an electronic database search and identified 14 studies. Studies varied in location, country of origin, and language support. The findings from this review revealed a critical need to develop, implement, and study linguistically responsive programs for children who are refugees in host countries.

Prevalence of tuberculosis and associated factors among presumptive TB refugees residing in refugee camps in Ethiopia

BackgroundTuberculosis (TB) causes significant morbidity and mortality in refugee populations. Although Ethiopia is the third largest refugee-hosting country in Africa, there is limited published data on the prevalence and associated factors of TB in refugees. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary TB (PTB) and explore associated factors in presumptive TB refugees residing in refugee camps in Ethiopia.MethodsA facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted between February and August 2021 in refugee camps in Ethiopia. Data were collected consecutively from 610 presumptive TB refugees who attended for TB diagnosis in selected refugee camp clinics in Ethiopia. A pre-tested questionnaire was used to collect data, and sputum samples were collected from eligible study participants. The Xpert Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB)/Rifampicin (RIF) assay was performed on direct spot sputum samples, whereas morning sputum samples were processed and inoculated for bacteriological culture using Mycobacterium Growth Indicator Tube (MGIT) and Lowsteen Jensen (LJ) methods. The statistical software package (STATA version 14) was used for statistical analysis. A logistic regression model was used for the evaluation of the association between bacteriologically confirmed TB cases and the associated factors. Descriptive statistics were used for the expression of the results, and statistical significance was assumed at p < 0.05.ResultsOut of 610 study participants, more than half were female (54.9%), and the mean age was 37.9 years (SD, 16.64). The prevalence of bacteriologically confirmed PTB cases among refugees residing in refugee camps in Ethiopia was 13.3% (95% CI, 10.7–16.2%) using the Xpert MTB/RIF assay and/or culture. MTB was detected in 12.8% (95% CI, 10.2–15.7%) of the individuals using the Xpert MTB/RIF assay, while culture positivity was observed in 11.6% (95% CI, 9.2–14.5%). The multivariable logistic regression model showed South Sudan origins (adjusted odds ratio, AOR = 7.74; 95% CI, 3.05–19.64), age group, 19–38 years old (AOR = 5.66; 95% CI, 1.86–17.28), and male sex (AOR = 2.69; 95% CI, 1.58–4.56) were significantly associated with the bacteriologically confirmed TB among refugees residing in refugee camps in Ethiopia.ConclusionThe prevalence of bacteriologically confirmed PTB among presumptive TB refugees residing in refugee camps in Ethiopia was high. The national TB program should strengthen TB prevention and control activities in the refugee camps of Ethiopia. Moreover, an active TB survey program should be implemented in refugee camps in Ethiopia.

Using machine learning and remote sensing to track land use/land cover changes due to armed conflict

Armed conflicts have detrimental impacts on the environment, including land systems. The prevailing understanding of the relation between Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) and armed conflict fails to fully recognize the complexity of their dynamics – a shortcoming that could undermine food security and sustainable land/water resources management in conflict settings. The Syrian portion of the transboundary Orontes River Basin (ORB) has been a site of violent conflict since 2013. Correspondingly, the Lebanese and Turkish portions of the ORB have seen large influxes of refugees. A major challenge in any geoscientific investigation in this region, specifically the Syrian portion, is the unavailability of directly-measured “ground truth” data. To circumvent this problem, we develop a novel methodology that combines remote sensing products, machine learning techniques and quasi-experimental statistical analysis to better understand LULC changes in the ORB between 2004 and 2022. Through analysis of the resulting annual LULC maps, we can draw several quantitative conclusions. Cropland areas decreased by 21–24 % in Syria's conflict hotspot zones after 2013, whereas a 3.4-fold increase was detected in Lebanon. The development of refugee settlements was also tracked in Lebanon and on the Syrian/Turkish borders, revealing different LULC patterns that depend on settlement dynamics. The results highlight the importance of understanding the heterogenous spatio-temporal LULC changes in conflict-affected and refugee-hosting countries. The developed methodology is a flexible, cloud-based approach that can be applied to wide variety of LULC investigations related to conflict, policy and climate.

Refugee settlements are highly exposed to extreme weather conditions.

Involuntary displacement from conflict and other causes leads to clustering of refugees and internally displaced people, often in long-term settlements. Within refugee-hosting countries, refugee settlements are frequently located in isolated and remote areas, characterized by poor-quality land and harsh climatic conditions. Yet, the exposure of refugee settlements to climatic events is underresearched. In this article, we study the exposure of the 20 largest refugee settlements worldwide to extreme variations in climatic conditions. The analysis integrates exposure of camp locations compared to the national trends for both slow- and rapid-onset events and includes descriptive statistics, signal-to-noise analyses, and trend analyses. Our findings show that most refugee settlements included face relatively high exposure to slow-onset events, including high temperatures (for settlements in Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Sudan, and Uganda), low temperatures (in the case of Jordan and Pakistan), and low levels of rainfall (in Ethiopia, Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda) compared to national averages. Our findings for rapid-onset events-heatwaves, coldwaves, and extreme rainfall-are less conclusive compared to country trends, although we find relatively high exposure to extreme rainfall in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. Our analyses confirm that refugee populations are exposed to extreme weather conditions postdisplacement, which, in combination with their sociopolitical exclusion, poses a threat to well-being and increased marginalization. Our findings call for an inclusive and integrated approach, including refugees and their host communities, in designing climate adaptation and sustainable development policies, in order to promote equitable sustainable development pathways in refugee-hosting countries.

Understanding Social Media Dependency, and Uses and Gratifications as a Communication System in the Migration Era: Syrian Refugees in Host Countries as a Case Study

Through the theoretical frameworks of the media system dependency model and uses and gratifications theory, this study examined the uses of social media by Syrian refugees in Jordan and Turkey. A mixed-methods approach was used to increase the credibility and validity of the study’s findings by combining a qualitative method with quantitative data. The findings show that there were some factors that affected the Syrian refugees’ use of social media before seeking refuge in Jordan and Turkey, which were mainly its ban due to the regime’s censorship and a bad Internet connection due to the bad infrastructure. The absence of these two factors led to an increase in their social media dependency after seeking refuge. There are variances in which social media sites Syrian refugees use the most and why. The majority relied on Facebook for various reasons, and this dependency had varying repercussions on individuals. Furthermore, many immigrants were acquainted with new platforms, implying that refugees became social-media-literate and participated in the updates of the new platforms, even if such sites were not well known to the general public. The Syrian refugees’ dependency on social media varies from person to person due to differences in personal goals, social status, locations, living characteristics, and easy access to the Internet. Furthermore, this dependency on social media has different effects on them according to the media system dependency model. The refugees become increasingly dependent on social media to satisfy their needs and, because of that, social media dependency will become more important in their lives and will increase its influence and effects on them. Furthermore, the study found that the Syrian refugees depended on social media for various gratifications, such as educational, work, and business; information access; cultural and social aspects; connecting with networks and families; establishing friendships; learning new skills; self-expression; making business; and finding work, in addition to reaching routes and contacting smugglers to help them leave the country.

How to cope with a refugee population? Evidence from Uganda

Sub-Saharan Africa hosts a large proportion of the world’s refugees, raising concerns about the consequences on host countries. Uganda is the largest refugee-hosting country in Africa and is praised for its progressive refugee policy. We analyze the effects of hosting refugees on material welfare in Uganda, relying on longitudinal data and an instrumental variable approach. Our results indicate that Ugandan households benefit from living close to refugee settlements. In contrast to the existing literature, those initially involved in subsistence agriculture benefit the most. The effect seems to be driven by the few households able to move from subsistence agriculture to commercial farming and to some extent, to wage employment.

Refugee Protection in Multi-level Governance Regimes: A Case for Kenya and Indonesia

In Indonesia, The Presidential Regulation No. 125 of 2016 concerning the management of asylum seekers, signed by President Joko Widodo on the last day of 2016, formalizes the role of sub-national units in refugee management, including the provision of appropriate, non-custodial accommodation. While in Kenya, the recently enacted Refugee Act of 2021 alludes to the engagement of the County Governments in Refugee protection. Within the context of the legal framework of these two countries, this article analyses the place of refugees in a multi-layered governance system through a comparative appraisal of local government structures in the selected States. The Article compares forms of decentralization adopted in these two refugee-hosting countries with the primary aim of establishing local government formation responsive to asylum seekers' plight. The research finds a novelty that involving local governments in refugee protection is a crucial step toward the effective and sustainable management of displaced populations. However, for it to be effective, it must be supported by adequate resources, clear guidelines, and a strong institutional capacity.

Syrian Refugee Women's Maternal Mental Health Perceptions, Coping Strategies, and Help-Seeking Practices in Lebanon.

Globally, 27 million female refugees of reproductive age are subjected to numerous socio-ecological factors that increase their risks of mental health issues, especially during the postpartum period. This study seeks to explore Syrian refugee mothers' experiences and perceptions of postpartum depression. We used a qualitative phenomenological approach to interview purposively sampled typical postpartum Syrian mothers living in informal camps in Lebanon to evaluate their maternal mental health perceptions, coping strategies, and help-seeking practices. Results revealed three major themes: conceptualizing maternal depression as extraordinary and ordinary, cultural perceptions of mental health help-seeking, and coping with negative emotions. Findings are critical to Lebanon and other Muslim refugee-hosting countries as they can inform future health policies, health care delivery models, and community interventions. Utilizing culturally and religiously appropriate frameworks in assessing and providing mental health services to this vulnerable group can substantially improve mental health services' acceptance, utilization, and impact.
