Nomination and Predication as Profiling Tools in Media Discourse

The article concerns the phenomenon of profiling as a cognitive concept and a research paradigm implemented in German discourse linguistics and used successfully in the linguistic discourse analysis. The contrastive analysis is carried out based on the Polish and German-language research corpus. The analysis aims to reconstruct the profiles of the controversial biographers in the press – Artur Domosławski (author of Kapuściński’s biography), and Gerhard Gnauck (author of Reich-Ranicki’s biography). In this approach, profiling in the media discourse is understood as a dynamic process, pointing to journalists’ competing and mutually combating positions and points of view, embedded in different cultures. Based on the theoretical assumptions and the specificity of the corpus, important questions arise about who profiles whom, what perspective they adopt and what linguistic practices they use. The analysis will examine nominations (referential forms) and predications (predicative forms) in the context of their potential for profiling discourse actors. The selected tools will allow us to reconstruct the culturally specific profiles of both biographers.

The role of cognitive control and referential complexity on adults' choice of referring expressions: Testing and expanding the referential complexity scale.

This study aims to advance our understanding of the nature and source(s) of individual differences in pragmatic language behavior over the adult lifespan. Across four story continuation experiments, we probed adults' (N = 496 participants, ages 18-82) choice of referential forms (i.e., names vs. pronouns to refer to the main character). Our manipulations were based on Fossard et al.'s (2018) scale of referential complexity which varies according to the visual properties of the scene: low complexity (one character), intermediate complexity (two characters of different genders), and high complexity (two characters of the same gender). Since pronouns signal topic continuity (i.e., that the discourse will continue to be about the same referent), the use of pronouns is expected to decrease as referential complexity increases. The choice of names versus pronouns, therefore, provides insight into participants' perception of the topicality of a referent, and whether that varies by age and cognitive capacity. In Experiment 1, we used the scale to test the association between referential choice, aging, and cognition, identifying a link between older adults' switching skills and optimal referential choice. In Experiments 2-4, we tested novel manipulations that could impact the scale and found both the TIMING of a competitor referent's presence and EMPHASIS placed on competitors modulated referential choice, leading us to refine the scale for future use. Collectively, Experiments 1-4 highlight what type of contextual information is prioritized at different ages, revealing older adults' preserved sensitivity to (visual) scene complexity but reduced sensitivity to linguistic prominence cues, compared to younger adults. Cognitive Status and Subject Reference in Spanish Written Discourse

Abstract Speakers make assumptions regarding the informativeness and saliency of referents in discourse and about their addressee’s cognitive status (memory and attention) regarding those referents. These assumptions, in turn, determine the forms (e.g., pronouns, NPs) speakers use when referring to entities. Gundel, Jeanette K., Nancy Hedberg & Ron Zacharski. 1993. Cognitive status and the form of referring expressions in discourse. Language 69(2). 274–307 proposed a set of implicationally related cognitive statuses in the Givenness Hierarchy that predict the forms speakers use to refer to entities in discourse. Greater levels of attention and memory predict the use of phonetically minimal referential forms and lesser levels predict more phonetically elaborate forms. Assuming writers make fewer assumptions regarding readers’ level of attention and memory, the present study examines whether the revised Hierarchy proposed by Blackwell, Sarah E. & Margaret Lubbers Quesada. 2012. Third-person subjects in native speakers’ and L2 learners’ narratives: Testing (and revising) the Givenness Hierarchy for Spanish. Somerville: Cascadilla is valid for predicting referring forms in Spanish written film retell narrative discourse. The data corroborate that participants select subject forms as predicted, but also reveal an increased use of definite NPs, suggesting that the Hierarchy has a stronger predictive power for oral narratives where attention and memory play a greater role in referent identification.

The influence of discourse continuity on referential form choice.

Much research in the functional linguistics literature suggests that the use of zero pronouns is driven by the degree of interclausal connection. Kim (1990, 1992) claims that in clause chain languages such as Korean and Japanese, zero pronouns are primarily used following an interclausal connective with a tight interclausal connection that maintains subject continuity (whether the subject referent is maintained or changed in the following clause) and action continuity (temporal sequence or action sequence is continued or interrupted in the following clause). Consistent with the claim, the results of Experiments 1 and 2 demonstrated that Korean speakers used more zero pronouns following a connective with higher subject continuity (Experiment 1) and action continuity (Experiments 1 and 2). The effect of connectives was observed when grammatical role, referential predictability, and coherence relation were controlled for (Experiment 2). The use of referring expressions in Mandarin-speaking children with and without developmental language disorder

ABSTRACT This study investigated the use of referring expressions in Mandarin-speaking children with and without developmental language disorder (DLD). The data consist of narratives elicited from 18 children with DLD and 18 typically-developing (TD) children matched on chronological age. Participants’ referring expressions were analysed in terms of referential form, function, and adequacy. The overall results of form – function mappings showed that the two groups of children were quite similar in their referential choices, indicating that both groups were sensitive to function constraints and listener needs. On the other hand, children with DLD were less successful than TD children in producing adequate subsequent mentions, suggesting that referential adequacy would be useful for identifying areas of difficulty children with DLD would have in referencing.

Neural referential form selection: Generalisability and interpretability

In recent years, a range of Neural Referring Expression Generation (REG) systems have been built and they have often achieved encouraging results. However, these models are often thought to lack transparency and generality. Firstly, it is hard to understand what these neural REG models can learn and to compare their performance with existing linguistic theories. Secondly, it is unclear whether they can generalise to data in different text genres and different languages. To answer these questions, we propose to focus on a sub-task of REG: Referential Form Selection (RFS). We introduce the task of RFS and a series of neural RFS models built on state-of-the-art neural REG models. To address the issue of interpretability, we probe these RFS models using probing classifiers that consider information known to impact the human choice of Referential Forms. To address the issue of generalisability, we assess the performance of RFS models on multiple datasets in multiple genres and two different languages, namely, English and Chinese.

Preferred argument structure in the oral narratives of adolescents with and without SLI

ABSTRACT According to the theory of ‘Preferred Argument Structure’ (PAS), the realisation and distribution of core arguments including the subject of a transitive verb (A), the direct object of a transitive verb (O) or the subject of an intransitive verb (S) in spoken discourse are subject to both grammatical and pragmatic constraints. However, previous studies on the formulation of argument structure have largely focused on the syntactic difficulties of children with SLI. In addition, little is known about the developmental outcomes in argument structure for adolescents with SLI. In this study, we compared PAS in the narratives of 19 adolescents with SLI (Mean age = 14.3; SD = 0.64) and 19 adolescents with typical language development (TLD; Mean age = 14.5; SD = 0.84). The core arguments of the predicate in each narrative based on the wordless picture storybook ‘Frog, where are you?’ were coded for grammatical roles (A, O and S), referential forms (lexical forms and non-lexical form including null and pronominal forms) and information status (given, accessible and new information). The data were then analysed for conformity to the grammatical and pragmatic constraints of the PAS theory. The two groups were found to be similar in their conformity to the pragmatic constraints but differed in how they conform to the syntactic constraints. In particular, the adolescents with SLI were more likely to produce clauses with two lexical arguments, and the lexical arguments occurred significantly more frequently at the subject role of a transitive verb than the TLD groups. Our results provide further evidence that it is a persistent grammatical deficit, rather than a pragmatic deficit, which poses a special challenge for adolescents with SLI in their formulation of argument structure in narratives.

How Does Topicality Affect the Choice of Referential Form? Evidence From Mandarin.

Many models of reference production suggest that speakers tend to use a reduced referential form, such as a pronoun, to signal the topicality of a particular referent, that is, the Topichood Hypothesis. However, little is known about the precise nature of the mapping between topichood and referential form and the mechanisms by which topichood affects referential form. The current study aims to address these issues by investigating how topicality influences different kinds of reduced expressions, namely, null and overt pronouns in Mandarin. We manipulated topicality using a left-dislocation structure in Experiment 1. We found that topicality increased the use of null pronouns, but not overt pronouns. This suggests that topicality may increase only the most reduced expression available in a given language. Experiment 2 examined whether the topicality effect was related to predictability. We found that participants used more null pronouns for less predictable referents. We suggest that the topicality effect could be better explained by an accessibility mechanism.

Young Chinese EFL Learners’ Referential Strategies in Written Chinese and English Narratives

A good command of referential skills has been seen as an effective indicator that reveals learners’ discourse-related competence. However, in the realm of second language learning, a scant of attention has been paid to investigate L2 learners’ referential skills in narratives. Therefore, the present study aims to address the gap through examining young Chinese EFL learners’ abilities in using referential forms in English narratives. Three Chinese EFL fourth graders in Taiwan were asked to produce English and Chinese written narratives, elicited through a wordless picture book Frog, Where Are You? (Mayer, 1969). The results showed that the participants made few mistakes and achieved high level of appropriateness in the use of referential expressions in English narratives. It was also found that they used similar referential strategies across different discourse contexts in both English and Chinese narratives. It was suggested that their near-proficient performance regarding the referential skills may be attributed to the positive transfer from L1 to L2. However, the analysis of some mistakes by the participants also demonstrated that L2 overgeneralization played a role that hinders the participants’ performance. Finally, implications for pedagogy and suggestions for future research are made.

The theory of intersubjectivity has a strong explanatory power, which can be used to reinterpret and understand some linguistic phenomena, usages and rules in Korean and Chinese, especially some so-called marked usages. From the perspective of intersubjectivity, this paper focuses on the unconventional usage of first-person and second-person deixis in Korean and Chinese, including two aspects: the anti-pre-emptive usage between personal deictic pronouns and nominal components such as address terms, and the usage of pronoun dislocation between the deictic pronouns. The marked referential form has strong context dependence, which is not accidental, but the embodiment of the speaker''s communication strategies. We believe that intersubjectivity is the fundamental reason for the emergence or existence of this phenomenon. The unconventional usage of first-person and second-person deixis in Korean and Chinese has the discourse functions of “indirect pragmatic projection”, “stance marking function”, “alliance relationship construction”, “identity status representation”, “optimal relevance establishment”, “dynamic regulation of pragmatic distance”, “pragmatic ambivalence”, “communication viewpoint stance”. These discourse functions are the concrete manifestations of intersubjectivity. It can be said that the unconventional usage of the first-person and second-person deixis in Korean and Chinese is an expression with strong intersubjectivity.

Information Status Predicts the Incidence of Gesture in Discourse: An Experimental Study

ABSTRACT The study aimed to disentangle the influence of information status and referential form on the distribution of gestures in sustained discourse. Previous research shows that new and less accessible rather than old and more accessible information, expressed by rich rather than lean referential forms, is more likely to be accompanied by gestures. However, earlier studies have drawn on correlational results. This study probes the relationship between information status and gesture production experimentally. Participants retold stories referring to discourse entities as normal (Control), using only lexical noun phrases (NOUN condition), or only pronouns (PRONOUN condition). The results from the experimental conditions showed that speakers tend to produce gestures with reintroduced rather than maintained referents regardless of referential form. The findings suggest a strong and direct relationship between information status and gesture production when referential forms are controlled for, lending further support to a view of speech and gesture as an integrated system.

The role of grammatical role and thematic role predictability in reference form production in Mandarin Chinese.

Evidence suggests that English speakers use pronouns when referring to the grammatical subject and predictable thematic role. We tested how grammatical role and thematic role predictability affect different types of referential forms, namely, overt pronouns and null pronouns in Mandarin Chinese. We found that both overt and null pronouns were sensitive to grammatical role. However, we did not find any evidence that overt and null pronouns were sensitive to thematic role predictability. Although null pronouns were influenced by grammatical role, the rate of null pronouns for subject reference was very low compared to that of overt pronouns. Given the frequent occurrence of null pronouns in Mandarin, our results suggest that the use of null pronouns may not be explained by a simple grammatical role mechanism.

Choice of nominative and topic markers in Korean discourse.

In two written sentence completion experiments, I tested whether the choice of nominative and topic markers is subserved by the same mechanisms as anaphor choice and referent choice in Korean. I found that morphological marker choice was sensitive to various factors including connective, grammatical role, and verb semantics, whereas anaphor choice was sensitive only to grammatical role. I also found that morphological marker choice did not systematically vary with verb semantics unlike referent choice. These findings reveal two important properties of referential form production. One is that morphological marker choice relies on different mechanisms than underlie anaphor choice and referent choice. Another is that connective plays a significant role in determining referential form. Despite its role in referent choice and pronoun comprehension, connective has received little attention in current models of referential form production. The current study is the first to systematically test the effect of connective on referential form choice and to demonstrate its effect on morphological marker choice. By revealing how morphological marker choice is related to anaphor choice and referent choice, and identifying the factors that influence morphological marker choice, the results of the study improve our theoretical understanding of morphological marker production and reference production.

Total Lagrange implementation of a finite-deformation continuum dislocation dynamics model of mesoscale plasticity

We present a computational algorithm for solving the recently developed finite-deformation continuum dislocation dynamics theory of mesoscale plastic deformation of single crystals (Starkey et al., 2020). This CDD theory is based on a vector density representation of dislocations governed by curl-type transport-reaction equations subjected to the divergence-free constraint of the appropriate dislocation density. These density evolution equations are to be solved simultaneously with the finite-deformation crystal mechanics. Specifically, our algorithm aims to solve the referential form of the governing equations for a representative volume element (RVE) subject to remote uniform loading. The mechanical fields at the mesoscale are thus split into RVE-averages plus fluctuating components and treated using a strain-driven homogenization scheme. A virtual work-based total Lagrange formulation was used to discretize the governing mechanics equations. A first-order system least squares finite element formulation was used to solve the transport equations. The two schemes are coupled in a staggered fashion. As a part of the crystal mechanics discretization, we derive a consistent tangent modulus and show that the stress update for this model is both linear and global. This linear stress update comes at the cost of solving the dislocation transport equations at every time step to update the plastic distortion caused by dislocation motion. Several test problems are given, demonstrating the ability of the discretization scheme to solve the problem, including the expansion of dislocation loop-like bundles under constant velocity and driven by a mean deformation gradient, dynamic recovery of two oppositely oriented tilt boundaries in a single crystal, and a uniaxial tension test of a single crystal with one slip system activated. In most of these examples, the evolution behavior of the dislocations in the finite deformation regime is demonstrated.

Comprehension of Null and Pronominal Object Sentences in Japanese-speaking Children

ABSTRACT In successful communication, it is critical to have the ability to identify what a speaker is referring to from previously mentioned information. This ability requires the identification of the topic initially introduced by lexical forms and its continuity in discourse expressed by anaphora such as null and pronominal forms in the subsequent sentences. While Japanese-speaking children are frequently provided with pronominal and null forms, especially the null form, in reference to previously mentioned topics, it remains unclear from what age they understand the anaphoric use of such referential forms. The current study investigated the age at which Japanese-speaking children are able to identify the presence of topic chains connecting null and pronoun anaphora to the topic referred to by a lexical form in the preceding sentence. We tested children’s comprehension of null and pronominal object sentences using an intermodal preferential-looking paradigm. The results demonstrated that the Japanese-speaking children aged 2;7 and 3;2 as a group looked at the target animation reliably longer after hearing the test sentences than before or during the test sentences. This finding provides evidence that Japanese-speaking children’s ability to track topic chains and understand anaphora in the discourse develop by 2;7 years of age. However, unlike the 3;2-year-old group, the 2;7-year-old group showed weaker performance in interpreting pronominal object sentences, suggesting a possibility that young children find the interpretation of null anaphora easier than that of pronoun anaphora.

A longitudinal study of topic continuity in Chinese EFL learners’ written narratives

Abstract This paper reports a longitudinal study of topic continuity in Chinese EFL learners’ English written narratives by tracking their dynamic change of referential choices over two years. The proportional distribution of referential forms were calculated and texts produced by learners were analyzed. The calculation and analysis yielded the following findings. Firstly, while the general distribution of referential forms follows Givón’s cross-linguistic topic continuity scale, indicating the dominant role of discourse context in referring, quite a few instances deviate from this scale, suggesting the modulating effect of multiple factors, including L1 influence and articulators’ cognitive pressure. Secondly, with an increase in English exposure, L2 learners’ use of the typical referring form in each context displayed an increasing tendency over time. Finally, the developmental paths of L2 referential choices exhibited individual variability. These findings pointed to variation in interlanguage and the modulating effect of non-linguistic or internal cognitive factors on reference production.

Greater entropy leads to more explicit referential forms during language production

Speakers can refer to previously-mentioned words (e.g., the actor) using attenuated referring expressions such as pronouns (he), or elaborated referential forms such as repeating the original word (the actor). Predictability is theorized to influence form of reference during language production: More attenuated forms may be used to refer to more predictable words, presumably because predictable words are already active in memory, and therefore require less linguistic signal during subsequent reference. However, the reported results are mixed. The current study examines the effect of entropy, an information-theoretic metric that captures the predictability of all, not just one, referential candidate, on the production of referential forms. A meta-analysis combining data from multiple experiments (492 participants, 405 items) revealed that greater entropy leads to more explicit referential forms, suggesting that entropy might intensify the competition between referential candidates during language production, reducing total memory activation.

Characterizing macro- and micro-structures of narrative skills for Mandarin-speaking school-age children with specific language impairment

IntroductionLittle is known about the narrative skills of Mandarin-speaking children with specific language impairment (SLI). This study was aimed to capture the features of narratives for school-age Mandarin-speaking children with SLI. MethodsOral narrative samples by 55 Mandarin-speaking children with SLI [higher grades, recruited from Grade 4–5, n = 26, Mage = 11.00 years, SD = 0.56; lower grades, recruited from Grade 1–3, n = 29, Mage = 8.05 years, SD = 0.89] were compared with typically developing (TD) children on macro- and micro-structures of narratives. ResultsThe results revealed that across grades, for macrostructure, children with SLI lagged behind TD children in narrative pattern scores. For microstructure, children with SLI were constrained in the total number of words, the total number of different words, and the mean length of utterance. They also used fewer serial verb constructions, clausal objects, and temporality conjunctions. They were less adequate in the three referential functions of introduction, maintenance, and switch. Furthermore, the results showed that older children demonstrated higher narrative pattern scores, longer MLU, and higher proportions of conjunctions and referential forms of switch. ConclusionsThese results suggest that both macro- and micro-structure measures in narratives are sensitive to linguistic difficulties for children with SLI and that some of these measures are sensitive to grade growth. The findings shed light on the assessment and developmental changes of school-age Mandarin-speaking children with SLI and TD children.

Referent accessibility and referential choice in Mandarin mother–child conversation: The incremental effect of accessibility

This study investigated whether the referential choices made by Mandarin-speaking children and mothers were related to referent accessibility, in particular, to theincrementaleffect of accessibility. Two hypotheses were tested. First, it was hypothesized that both the children and the mothers would show sensitivity to the incrementaleffect of accessibility in their referential choices. Second, it was hypothesized that the children would be less informative than their mothers in their referential choices. Eight hours of Mandarin-speaking mother–child (2;2–3;1) conversation data were analyzed in terms of three types of referential forms and nine categories of accessibility features. In addition, analysis was conducted to determine the accessibility value for each referent and to examine the distribution of referential forms in relation to accessibility values. It was found that the children’s and mothers’ referential choices reflected the incremental effect of accessibility, which supported the first hypothesis. It was also evidenced that the children used more null forms and less nominal and pronominal forms than their mothers did for referents with the same degree of accessibility, which confirmed the second hypothesis. The findings of the study were further discussed in relation to children’s linguistic and cognitive development and the characteristics of mother–child interaction.

Referential Chains Reveal Predictive Processes and Form-to-Function Mapping: An Electroencephalographic Study Using Naturalistic Story Stimuli.

In discourse pragmatics, different referential forms are claimed to be indicative of the cognitive status of a referent in the current discourse. Referential expressions thereby possess a double function: They point back to an (existing) referent (form-to-function mapping), and they are used to derive predictions about a referent’s subsequent recurrence in discourse. Existing event-related potential (ERP) research has mainly focused on the form-to-function mapping of referential expression. In the present ERP study, we explore the relationship of form-to-function mapping and prediction derived from the antecedent of referential expressions in naturalistic auditory language comprehension. Specifically, the study investigates the relationship between the form of a referential expression (pronoun vs. noun) and the form of its antecedent (pronoun vs. noun); i.e., it examines the influence of the interplay of predictions derived from an antecedent (forward-looking function) and the form-to-function mapping of an anaphor (backward-looking function) on the ERPs time-locked to anaphoric expressions. The results in the time range of the P300 and N400 allow for a dissociation of these two functions during online language comprehension.
