Recovery of nutrients from fish sludge to enhance the growth of microalga Chlorella sorokiniana CMBB276

Intensive aquaculture production generates large amounts of sludge. This waste could be considered as a potential source of nutrients that can be recovered and utilized. Little attention has been paid to nutrient recovery from fish sludge. In this study, bioconversion of sludge was evaluated in lab scale under anaerobic (AN), facultative anaerobic (FA) and aerobic (AE) conditions. After 40 days of fermentation, AN recovered the highest values of dissolved total nitrogen (82.7 mg L−1), while AE showed the highest dissolved total phosphorus (11.8 mg L−1) and the highest reduction of total suspended solids (36.0 %). Microbial analysis showed that AN exhibited a distinct bacterial community than that of FA and AE. Furthermore, C. sorokiniana grown in AN effluents collected after 12 days of fermentation achieved the highest biomass production (1.96 g L−1). These results suggest that AN has the best potential to recover nutrients from sludge for production of C. sorokiniana.

Valorization of Cherry By-Products as Coagulant/Flocculants Combined with Bentonite Clay for Olive Mill Wastewater Treatment

In this study, two by-products resulting from the processing of cherry (stems and pits) were used as natural coagulants to promote the valorization of these wastes and treat olive mill wastewater (OMW). The efficacy of the plant-based coagulants (PBCs) in the coagulation–flocculation–decantation process (CFD) was evaluated through the removal of turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS), total polyphenols (TPh), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The CFD process was demonstrated to be effective in turbidity and TSS reduction in OMW. Using cherry stems (CSs), these reductions were 65.2% of turbidity and 58.0% of TSS, while cherry pits (CPs) achieved higher reductions, 78.6% of turbidity and 68.2% of TSS. To improve the effectiveness of OMW treatment, mainly regarding the removal of TPh and DOC, the CFD process was complemented with the adsorption process (using bentonite clay). The adsorption capacity of bentonite was higher in acidic conditions (pH 3.0) and, with a dosage of 3.0 g L−1, reached 17.3 mg of DOC and 13.8 mg of TPh per gram of bentonite. Several adsorption isothermal models were assessed, and the Langmuir (r2 = 0.985), SIPS (r2 = 0.992), and Jovanovic models (r2 = 0.994) provided the best fittings. According to the optimal operational conditions defined throughout the present work, the combination of CFD and adsorption removals were as follows: (1) 98.0 and 91.3% of turbidity, (2) 80.8 and 81.2% of TSS, (3) 98.1 and 97.6% of TPh and (4) 57.9 and 62.2% of DOC, for CSs and CPs, correspondingly. Overall, the results suggest that cherry by-products can be used as low-cost natural coagulants and, when combined with another natural, abundant, and cheap material, such as bentonite clay, can be a sustainable alternative for treating OMW.

Biofabrication, spectroscopic, and photocatalytic studies of titania nanoparticles mediated by Proteus mirabilis strain NG-ABK-32 for smart applications

ABSTRACT Green fabrication of nanoparticles (NPs) is simple, pocket-friendly, easy, sustainable, and devoid of eco-toxicity issues. Thirty-five bacterial strains were isolated from ‘tie and dye’ effluent-contaminated soil and effluent samples and were identified using traditional methods. Following a dye decolourization assay, Proteus mirabilis strain (NG-ABK-32) emerged as the isolate with the highest potential to decolourize vat violet RR dye. Titania nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) fabricated using NG-ABK-32 strain were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. UV-Vis result displayed an absorption peak at 320 nm. The TEM image revealed monodispersed, spherical NPs possessing an average particle size of 3.18 nm. The crystallographic plane of rutile TiO2 NPs and high purity were confirmed by the XRD pattern. The average crystallite size was 52.53 nm. The synthesis of TiO2 NPs was further established from FT-IR by the presence of Ti-O, Ti-OH, and O-Ti-O functional groups. The synergistic treatment caused a significant reduction of total suspended solids (TSS), total dissolved solids (TDS), biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and color (Pt.Co) of the effluent by 96.86%, 78.78%, 67.84%, 56.65%, 67.84%, and 72.09% respectively. Thus, this study confirmed the better efficiency of combining biological (NG-ABK-32) pre-treatment with photocatalytic degradation post-treatment using the synthesized TiO2 NPs in the treatment of ‘tie and dye’ effluent compared to the application of the TiO2 NPs as a single treatment method.

Stormwater characterisation and modelling for Sungai Air Hitam in Selangor, Malaysia using model for urban stormwater improvement conceptualisation (music)

The aim of this study is to evaluate the current water quality status of one of the urban rivers in Malaysia, called Sungai Air Hitam. The river's water supply is not only unsuitable for the inhabitants but also hazardous to the aquatic species that depend on it. In order to simulate the water quality formulation of the river, the Model for Urban Stormwater Improvement Conceptualization (MUSIC) was used. The effects of various best management practices (BMPs) components have been examined to improve the river's water quality. This study also investigated different scenarios of the expected future changes in the land cover and the quality of the river. As the proportion of impervious surfaces increases, the urban hydrology cycle can be significantly altered, resulting in an increase in volumes and peak flows, and a decrease in storage, infiltration, and interception. The MUSIC results have shown significant reductions in biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total suspended solids (TSS), total phosphorus (TP), and total nitrogen (TN) after introducing BMPs. It was also noticed that the prediction of pollutants falls within the acceptable range set by the Urban Stormwater Management Manual for Malaysia (MSMA) 2nd edition. For the land cover, it was found that the total reduction of BOD, TSS, TP, and TN for existing land use is 92.5 %, 94.5 %, 90.7 % and 91.9 %. Meanwhile, the total reduction in future land use is 81.6 % for BOD, 86.2 % for TSS, 80.9 % for TP and 80.8 % for TN. From the simulation results, it was observed that the application of BMPs has successfully reduced the observed mean BOD concentration from 92.38 mg/L (Class V) to 6.93 mg/L (Class IV) of the national water quality standards, NWQS, water quality index. As a result, the water quality index of the overall catchment has improved from Class IV to Class III (WQ1, WQ3, and WQ4) and from Class V to IV (WQ2) with the application of the BMPs. This assessment aims to raise awareness within the Sungai Air Hitam community regarding the importance of preserving river cleanliness and understanding the long-term environmental impact of water quality. These findings underscore the importance of an integrated system in managing urban water systems, which can offer valuable insight to the decision-makers.

Chemical recovery of magnesium from the Dead Sea and its use in wastewater treatment

Abstract The objective of this study was to establish a suitable chemical process to recover magnesium compounds from Dead Sea water using a selective precipitation process. The recovered magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) and magnesium chloride (MgCl2) are applicable for wastewater treatment processes since they can effectively remove total suspended solids (TSS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Magnesium salts recovered from Dead Sea water were compared with cationic polyacrylamide (PAM) and inorganic salts, including aluminum sulfate Al2(SO4)3, ferric chloride (FeCl3), and ferrous sulfate (Fe2SO4) to investigate the removal efficiency of TSS and COD from wastewater using a chemical precipitation method by using coagulation and flocculation process. Results show that Mg(OH)2 yielded the highest TSS and COD removal efficiencies of 59 and 57%, respectively, with a wastewater pH of 11.5. MgCl2 yielded lower removal efficiencies of 46 and 44%, respectively; at pH 10.5, lower magnesium concentration doses were needed. The most effective chemical precipitation method for removal involved cationic PAM coagulants, resulting in an 86% reduction in TSS and a 65% reduction in COD. Combining commercial Fe2SO4 and MgCL2 recovered from Dead Sea water reduced up to 90 and 73% of TSS and COD, respectively.

Surrogate-Based Multiobjective Optimization of Detention Pond Volume in Sponge City

Detention ponds are effective structures for stormwater management in the urban drainage system of sponge cities. The pond size is taken as the decision variable, while the cost, total suspended solids (TSS), and catchment peak outflow (CPO) serve as the objectives for optimizing the detention pond volume. First, we randomly generated 10,000 pond areas and input them into the stormwater management model to simulate the time series of outflow and suspended solids concentration, thereby generating samples by combining the set of pond area, corresponding cost, TSS, and CPO. Then, two backpropagation neural network models (i.e., BPNN-TSS and BPNN-CPO) were trained, tested, and evaluated for predicting TSS and CPO, respectively. We employed them as surrogates and used the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II to solve the optimization problem. The results showed: (1) The BPNN models accurately predicted TSS and CPO (determination coefficient 0.988~0.996, Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency 0.988~0.997), and efficiently substituted stormwater management model simulations for optimization purposes (residuals −18.49~28.10 kg and −0.45~0.29 m3/s). (2) For the Pareto solutions, the detention pond reduced TSS by 0~8.33% and CPO by 0~72.44% and delayed their peaks by 4~52 min; the reduction in TSS and CPO tends to grow as pond size increases, and CPO reduction exhibits a minor marginal effect. (3) The surrogate-based approach saves 90.03% runtime while preserving the quality of the Pareto solutions, verifying reliability.

Monitoring Total Suspended Solid Concentration and Shoreline Dynamics Using Sentinel-2 Imagery in 2015-2021

Human activities in the Juwana Estuary impact increasing sedimentation, including industry, fish processing, ponds, and settlements. Increased sedimentation every year can lead to the formation of new land. In the long term, sedimentation will impact shoreline changes due to the formation of new land. This study aims to determine changes in Total Suspended Solid (TSS) concentration and shoreline values in the Juwana River Estuary. Increased sedimentation can be indicated based on water turbidity and TSS values—an effective method for observing TSS and coastline using remote sensing. The data for this study uses Sentinel-2 imagery. The TSS processing algorithm uses Laili, Liu, and C2RCC. TSS results using the C2RCC algorithm show the best regression results between image TSS and in situ TSS with an R2 of 0.721 compared to other algorithms. In 2015-2018 the average TSS value decreased by 2.303 mg/l. Processing results show the largest TSS reduction value of 12.466 mg/l on the Juwana Coast. The TSS value in 2018-2021 shows an average decrease of 4.447 mg/l; the largest decrease, with a value of 19.3 mg/l, is in the Batangan Coast. The coastline is extracted from image data using the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) algorithm. In 2015-2018 changes in the coastline were dominated by abrasion, covering an area of 35.2348 ha with a maximum distance of 143.78 m. In 2018-2021 changes in the coastline were dominated by abrasion, covering an area of 10.28224 ha with a maximum distance of 53.23 m. It can be interpreted that a decrease in TSS indicates a decrease in sedimentation, causing increased abrasion around the coastline.

Shear Enhanced Flotation Separation Technology in Winery Wastewater Treatment

The process of wine making is well known to produce large amounts of wastewater with highly variable characteristics. The disposal of untreated winery wastewater is strictly prohibited since it adversely affects the recipient environment. Due to the variability in characteristics of winery wastewater, developing a treatment system which can handle high organic and inorganic loads, especially during the vintage season, is a complex challenge. This study investigated the theory, methodology and implementation of a wastewater treatment technology called shear enhanced flotation separation (SEFS) as a potential primary treatment stage towards the treatment of winery wastewater. Winery effluent was subjected to a coagulation process in a high shear environment, with and without the introduction of air, followed by flocculation. Upon successful optimization of operating parameters, a polymeric-based coagulant AB121 and polyelectrolyte flocculant AB796 yielded the highest reduction in turbidity (95%) with typical values of 630 NTU for the raw wastewater and 25 NTU for the SEFS-treated effluent. A substantial reduction in total suspended solids (97%) was achieved with average raw winery wastewater values of 2275 mg/L compared to the 50 mg/L obtained for the SEFS-treated effluent. Furthermore, a notable reduction (54%) in COD (from 11,250 mg/L to 5220 mg/L) using SEFS technology was achieved.

Biomass Fuel Production through Fermentation of Lysinibacillus sp. LC 556247 in Various Ratios of Palm Oil Mill Effluent and Empty Fruit Bunch

Biomass wastes originating from palm oil milling activities can be characterized by their high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solid (TSS), and oil and grease content. The utilization of oil palm wastes such as palm oil mill effluent (POME) and empty fruit bunch (EFB) has great potential for a sustainable energy biomass pellet as it reduces the reliance on conventional materials for energy production. A mixture of POME and EFB in various ratios ranging between 7:3, 8:2, 9:1, and 10:0 was fermented in the presence of Lysinibacillus sp. LC 556247 for 120 h at 37 ± 2 °C and 180 rpm with the aim of elucidating the biodegradation of complex organic material in terms of BOD, COD, TSS, total organic carbon, inorganic carbon, and total carbon content. After fermentation, the mixtures were oven dried at 105 °C overnight and then subjected to calorific energy value (CEV) determination. The highest CEV of 20.26 MJ/kg was achieved for a ratio of 10:0 (slightly higher than the control experiment with the value of 18.67 MJ/kg), with maximum removal efficiencies of COD (12.19%), BOD (11.72%), TSS (93.94%), and oil reduction of 17.43%. The addition of EFB did not positively increase the CEV.

Best Management Practices Affect Water Quality in Coastal Watersheds

Coastal ecosystems are vulnerable due to watershed sediment and nutrient loads. In this study, the hydrology and water quality of two coastal watersheds, Wolf River watershed (WRW) and Jourdan River watershed (JRW), were assessed using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). Model performance evaluation was performed using the coefficient of determination (R2) and the Nash–Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE). After model calibration and validation, the effectiveness of ponds, wetlands, riparian buffers, and their combination as best management practices (BMPs) were analyzed. Total suspended solids (TSS) was reduced by 31.15% in the pond scenario and 30.37% in the wetland in WRW. In addition, mineral phosphorous (MinP) was reduced by 11.84% and 9.63% in ponds and wetlands, respectively. Similarly, in JRW, TSS was reduced by 74.89% in ponds and 74.90% in wetlands. Likewise, ponds and wetlands reduced MinP by 8.05% and 13.40%, respectively. Among four riparian buffer scenarios, the 30 m buffer prompted the estimation of higher reductions such as TSS by 28.36% and MinP by 29.77% in WRW, whereas a 13.14% TSS and 22.89% MinP reduction in JRW. In addition, combined BMP, TSS was reduced by 30.37% and MinP by 52.09% in WRW, followed by a 74.92% reduction in TSS and 27.37% in MinP in JRW. All BMP implementations were effective in reducing TSS and MinP. This study suggests that ponds and wetlands were effective in reducing TSS and riparian buffers were effective in reducing MinP. These findings could be insightful in coastal watershed management.

Effect of Alum Dose in the Coagulation Process for Decreasing the Pollutant in the Palm Oil Mill Effluent: Experimental and Kinetic Analysis

Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is palm oil processing industrial waste that cannot be discharged directly into water bodies. Therefore, this waste must be treated. One method that can be used to treat it is coagulation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of coagulant doses on the coagulation process for treating the POME through experimental and kinetic analysis. The alum dose was varied to 1, 3, 5, 10, 15 g/L. The volume of treated waste was 1 L. Before adding alum, the pH of POME was adjusted to 7.0 with the addition of technical grade NaOH. The coagulation process was carried out for 180 minutes at room temperature. Every 20 minutes, the pH of the liquid was measured and a fluid sample as much as ±50 mL was taken to be settled for 24 hours. Next, the total suspended solid (TSS) concentration in the supernatant was analyzed. The results showed that the addition of alum could decrease the liquid pH and increase the TSS of the liquid. The coagulation process for 180 minutes resulted in a TSS reduction efficiency of 33.3, 33.3, 37.1, 1.7, -17.8% at alum doses of 1, 3, 5, 10, 15 g/L respectively. The first-order kinetic model provided a better prediction than the second-order kinetic model with R2 values of 0.7876-0.9707 and 0.2746-0.8912, respectively.

Hydrologic and water quality performance of a subsurface gravel wetland treating stormwater runoff

Subsurface gravel wetlands are an emerging type of green infrastructure that can be used to manage stormwater through the capture and slow release of runoff. They are unique to other types of green infrastructure in that they have a distinct fully saturated gravel layer below an occasionally saturated soil layer that influences pollutant removal processes. While they have been widely applied to treat wastewater, our understanding of their efficiency in treating stormwater with variable pollutant inputs is limited. To fill this gap, this study monitored the flow and water quality (total suspended solids, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and chloride) in a subsurface gravel wetland in Oshkosh, Wisconsin at the influent, effluent, and in an observation well. Results from nine storm events indicated that the wetland had a median volume reduction of 74% and a median peak flow reduction of 89%. The reduction in pollutant concentrations where highly dependent upon the influent concentration. Average reductions of total suspended solids, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus were 49%, −21% and −0.2%, respectively, indicating an increase in nutrients; however, where influent concentrations were above irreducible levels, total phosphorus was reduced by 45% (influent ≥0.25 mg/L) and total nitrogen was reduced by 38% (influent ≥2.5 mg/L). Overall, this study shows that the subsurface gravel wetland performed similar to other types of green infrastructure and could be a good management practice to mitigate the harmful effects of stormwater runoff.

Treatment of Municipal Wastewater in a Fixed Aerated Bed: Use of Natural Fibrous Materials.

The municipal wastewater may be treated using a number of different types of fixed beds that have a larger surface area. Since the fibrous materials have such a large specific surface area, they are frequently considered to be the best option for greater microbiological support and treatment efficacy. In this research, natural fibre materials such as coir fibre and areca husk were investigated for their potential to function as fixed aerated beds for the treatment of municipal wastewater. During the experiment, variations in the chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), total dissolved solids (TDS), and total suspended solids (TSS) of the effluent were used to determine how well the aerated fixed bed work in treating the wastewater. The most efficient operating parameters for the successful treatment of wastewater were determined to be a contact period of 72 hrs, a filter medium depth of 5 cm, and a packing density of 10 kg/m3. The reductions in BOD, COD, TDS, and TSS for coir fibre are 55%, 58.8%, 57.8%, and 51.89%, respectively, whereas the reductions for areca husk are 38.3%, 37.78%, 31.76%, and 30.56%, respectively. In the course of this experiment, the coir fibre was discovered to be marginally more effective in comparison to the areca husk.

A Review of Pollutant Concentrations in Urban Stormwater Across Eastern Australia, After 20 Years

Concerns about pollutants in urban stormwater were initially raised in the early 1970s. Australian investigations decades later, also found urban stormwater runoff contained elevated levels of sediment and nutrients, as well as heavy metals, that brought stormwater management to the forefront for regulators. Planning policies were implemented to integrate stormwater management into development in the form of water sensitive urban design (WSUD), also known internationally as low-impact design (LID) and Sustainable Urban Design solutions (SUDs). Since their introduction, comprehensive broad scale field research to verify their success in achieving load reduction targets (LRTs), has been limited. Paucity of field data on the performance of WSUD has prompted organisations to initiate their own locally-specific studies. Limited regulatory guidance on design of monitoring programs has resulted in various methodologies and meta-data recording. This research review collates urban stormwater data from 77 Australian studies, from geographic regions of east coast Australia. The raw dataset in this review included 2,836 events and 4,536 individual results, collected between 1993 and 2021 from local councils, research organisations and water authorities. The review examined total suspended solids (TSS), total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) concentrations, prior to any form of treatment measures as they are the focus of current guidelines and standards for stormwater management. Seminal research, used to inform stormwater guidelines and water quality modelling across Australia, is significantly different (p < 0.001), in this case approximately double the reviewed concentrations. International data is also >20% higher, on average. Geographic location of catchments had the greatest influence on pollutant concentrations, after accounting for the effects of land use and catchment urbanisation date (p < 0.001). Based on the findings of this review, generic load reduction targets (expressed as a percentage of annual inputs, e.g. 80% TSS reduction, 45% TN, 45% TP) typical in current Australian planning regulations, may be sub-optimal in achieving receiving water quality goals, particularly given the difficulty of removing pollutants when present in low concentrations. Alternately, place-based discharge targets which meet, or exceed, background water quality, or ecological and hydrological benchmarks may be a more appropriate tool to achieve environmental objectives.

Floating Wetlands for Sustainable Drainage Wastewater Treatment

The preservation of water resources in modern urbanized society is a major concern. In this study, a floating constructed wetland (FWT) pilot plant was designed and constructed for the treatment of a polluted wastewater drain. A series of experiments were run continuously for a year in pilot-scale FWTs in a semi-arid area located in Egypt’s Delta. Four aquatic plant species (Eichhornia, Ceratophyllum, Pistia stratiotes, and Nymphaea lotus) were used to assess the performance of FWTs for pollutant removals, such as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), electrical conductivity (EC), and total dissolved solids (TDS), from drainage wastewater to reuse the treated effluent in irrigation practices. The FWT systems were fed drainage tainted water on a weekly basis, and the concentrations and removal efficiency were assessed in the experiments. The average reduction in BOD, COD, TSS, TDS, TN, EC, and TP were 76–86%, 61–80%, 87–95%, 36.6–44.1%, 70–97%, 37–44%, and 83–96%, respectively. ANOVA with Post-HOC t-tests show that the Eichhornia, Pistia stratiotes, and Nymphaea lotus have the highest BOD and COD removal performance, whereas Pistia stratiotes and Nymphaea lotus have the highest TN and TP removal performance. In all cases, the Nymphaea lotus performed well in terms of pollutant removal. In addition, a design procedure for a FWT systems is presented. For wastewater treatment, FWT systems have proven to be a low-cost, long-term option.

Evaluation of impact of sludge types and solids content on sludge treatment using microwave enhanced advanced oxidation process

ABSTRACT The microwave enhanced advanced oxidation process (MW-AOP) has been applied to pre-treat different sludge types and high solids content. Secondary sludge not only had the highest solids and nutrient content but also yielded higher treatment efficiency than primary or mixed sludge. In the case of secondary sludge with 4% total solids (TS), the total suspended solids (TSS) concentration was reduced by 32% while soluble chemical oxygen demand concentration increased from 1% to 40% after treatment at 110°C. A high level of nutrient release was also achieved; about 65% total phosphate (TP) solubilized at 110°C. The degree of secondary sludge disintegration was dictated by temperature and hydrogen peroxide dosage. The optimal operating temperature for the system was 110°C, and sludge containing TS up to 8% was treated effectively. Secondary sludge with 8% TS had a TSS reduction of 41% after treatment at 110°C while COD solubilization was about 45%; about 55% TP was solubilized at 10 min holding time. Treatment of sludge with higher solids content would allow for handling larger amounts of sludge at a given period and reduce heating cost per unit of treated sludge. The inter-relationship between the degree of sludge disintegration and changes in chemical and physical properties was also clearly demonstrated here. The treated sludge would be an ideal substrate for anaerobic digestion or phosphorous recovery processes. High levels of nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen) and metal release, and solids disintegration from sludge containing high solids content would make subsequent resource recovery processes more effective and economical.

Decrease levels of total suspended solid in tofu liquid waste using biocoagulant charcoal

A coagulant is a chemical needed by water to help settle small particles that cannot settle on their own. Meanwhile, total suspended solids (TSS) result from filter dissolved solids by gravity deposition, usually in chloride particles, and indicate the sedimentation rate. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of bio coagulants to reduce levels of total suspended solids (TSS) in liquid tofu waste to find out which one is more effective as a bio coagulant in liquid tofu waste. This research is experimental, consisting of 2 stages: the manufacture of charcoal from bio coagulants and the measurement of total suspended solids (TSS) levels. The data collected were tabulated and then analyzed descriptively. Three types of bio coagulants used were tamarind seeds, coffee husks, and cocoa pods. The results showed that there was a decrease in the TSS value before and after coagulation was given. The highest TSS reduction was obtained from bio coagulant charcoal from cocoa pods which reached 54.28% for a coagulant dose of 2 mg/l, while for a coagulant dose of 5 mg/l it could reduce TSS by 70.71%. It means the cocoa pods waste have a potential to use as coagulant to control sedimentation in the environment.

Effective Microorganism-4 (EM-4) pada Proses Bioremediasi Limbah Cair Industri Tahu

Tofu industrial wastewater has a Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Total Suspended Solid (TSS) value exceeding the environmental quality standards. The high value of COD and TSS of tofu industrial wastewater is caused by the high content of organic matter and if there is no treatment, the liquid waste of the tofu industry can cause pollution in the aquatic environment. One of the biological processing of tofu industrial wastewater is the bioremediation process using microorganisms. This study aims to determine the ability of the effective microorganisme-4 (EM-4) on reduction of COD and TSS in tofu industrial wastewater. This research was conducted by mixing tofu industrial wastewater and effective microorganism-4 solution into the reactor with various concentrations of EM-4 3%, 5%, 7% and 10% and residence time for 2 days, 4 days and 6 days. The parameters were measured of COD, TSS and pH. The results showed that the tofu industrial wastewater treatment using EM-4 solution with a concentration of 10% for 6 days gave the best results, namely a decrease in COD by 70%, an increase in pH to 8.36 and TSS by 180 mg/L

The study of TSS reduction in industrial wastewater by nano-coagulants

The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of coagulants and nano-coagulants in different concentrations to reduce the TSS of industrial wastewater using the Taguchi statistical method. Two chemicals, iron chloride and aluminum sulfate, and two nanoparticles of iron oxide and alumina, were used as coagulants within the wastewater flocculation process at Beshel industrial complex. A L16 orthogonal array with the four factors of control at four levels each and two interactions was employed for optimization of coagulants and nano-coagulants concentration to reduce total suspended solids (TSS) in industrial wastewater. The concentration of iron chloride 1.5 g/l, concentration of iron oxide nanoparticles 1.5 g/l, concentration of aluminum sulfate 1.5 g/l and concentration of alumina nanoparticles 1.5 g/l was the optimal conditions to reduce the TSS of industrial wastewater.
