Chromium vanadate nanoparticles entrapped reduced graphene oxide nanosheets: A nanocomposite with high catalytic activity for the detection of hypertension-drug nifedipine in biological samples

Though having excellent characteristics, chromium vanadate (CrV) use in the electrochemical sensor field has rarely been reported. Herein, we report the chromium vanadate/reduced graphene oxide (CrV/rGO) nanocomposite-modified electrode for the sensitive detection of Nifedipine (NF) for the first time. NF is a highly prescribed hypertension drug and also emerging as a pollutant due to its high consumption. Simple and rapid quantification of NF in water and biological fluids is highly required for water quality and pollution control. Precipitation followed by annealing synthesis has been adopted to design the CrV/rGO nanocomposite. The CrV/rGO nanocomposite's crystal structure, functional groups, and surface morphologies were determined utilizing XRD, XPS, FT-IR, Raman, HR-TEM, and FE-SEM. The pebbles-like irregular cube-shaped CrV nanoparticles embedded inside the wrinkly nanosheets of reduced graphene nanocomposite caused structural flaws that led to a large surface area and a straightforward electron transport channel. Using the CrV/rGO nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode (CrV/rGO/GCE), an extremely low detection limit of 0.0048 µM and sensitivity of 1.185 µA µM−1 cm2 were obtained. In addition, it demonstrated a respectable degree of selectivity among the prevalent interfering molecules. Furthermore, the CrV/rGO/GCE sensor could detect NF in human urine, and tap water samples with greater than > 98% recovery, demonstrating its suitability for rapid NF detection. Hence, using CrV/rGO nanocomposite material in high-performance electrochemical applications has great potential for practicality.

Co-delivery of cisplatin and doxorubicin by carboxylic acid functionalized poly (hydroxyethyl methacrylate)/reduced graphene nanocomposite for combination chemotherapy of breast cancer cells

In this study a novel pH-responsive magnetic nanocomposite based on reduced graphene oxide was developed for combination of doxorubicin (Dox)-cisplatin (Cis) delivery to destroy the MCF-7 cell line. For this purpose, polyhydroxyethyl methacrylate (PHEMA) was bonded to the reduced graphene oxide through ATRP polymerization using grafting from method. Then the PHEMA hydroxy groups were converted to succinyloxy groups by polyesterification with succinic anhydride. The physicochemical properties of the nanocomposite were investigated via FTIR, SEM, XRD, DLS and TGA analysis. Unique structure of nanocomposite led to simultaneous encapsulation of Dox (75%) and Cis (82%) through ionic interaction, π–π stacking and hydrogen bonding. The obtained nanocomposite was uptake by MCF-7 cells at early first hour because of nanocomposite small size (below 70 nm). Cell viability assay results revealed that the Dox&Cis-loaded nanocomposite showed the highest rate of MCF-7 cells at lowest concentration (IC50 = 0.798 µg/mL) compared to treatment groups received single drug-loaded nanocomposite and free drugs. Dox&Cis-loaded nanocomposite exhibited a synergistic influence with the combination index (CI) value <1. The cell cycle analysis results revealed that the highest amount of apoptosis (cells population in sub G1 was 75%) was observed in the Dox&Cis-loaded nanocomposite treatment group compared with the single drug-loaded nanocomposite and free drugs. Our findings confirmed that combinational therapy by Dox and Cis graphene oxide-based nanocomposite has increased the cytotoxicity in MCF-7 cells by stimulating the apoptotic response.

Corrosion resistance enhancement by laser and reduced graphene oxide-based nano-silver for 1050 aluminum alloy

This paper describes a new approach for enhancing the pitting corrosion resistance of aluminum 1050 alloy. The aluminum surface was treated by pulsed laser (850 mJ) prior to anodization. Anodization was carried out at 15 V in a hybrid electrolyte saturated with reduced graphene nanocomposite (rGO-Ag). The oxide layer was analyzed using polarization and cyclic voltammetry tests. The microstructure and metal composition of the modified surface structure were investigated using a scanning electron microscope and an energy-dispersive detector. The addition of graphene nanocomposite to the electrolyte can enhance the current density (Icorr) to 96.60 µA/cm2 and corrosion potential (Ecorr) to −395.4 mV. Q-switched Nd:YAG pulsed laser surface treatment offered a substantially increase in the corrosion resistance. Laser performance results indicated a substantial difference in the protection of aluminum surface compared with that of the untreated sample. The process employed in this research aimed at improving the pitting corrosion resistance and enhancing the chemical reaction resistance of the aluminum oxide layer in artificial seawater environment.

Doxorubicin Loaded Green Synthesized Nanoceria Decorated Functionalized Graphene Nanocomposite for Cancer-Specific Drug Release

In the present study design, the PEGylated nanoceria decorated reduced graphene nanocomposite (RGO-CeNPs-PEG) was successfully prepared by eco-friendly non-toxic green synthesis following syn-graphenization method, and evaluated as an efficient and reliable pH-sensitive nano-carrier. During green synthesis, aqueous leaf extract of Azadirachta indica (neem) was used as a reducing agent and the graphene oxide (GO) was activated by 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimide for covalent functionalization by methoxy amino polyethylene glycol. The prepared Smart pH stimuli responded nanoplatform was thoroughly characterized by various analytical techniques. The values of average particle size and hydrodynamic diameter of naturally prepared nanoceria may be suitable for biomedical application. Considering drug loading and release studies, it may be concluded that the higher drug loading and more pH-responsive release of DOX from RGO-CeNPs-PEG lead to a promising nanocarrier for the anticancer drug. Furthermore, DOX-loaded RGO-CeNPs-PEG had lesser harmful effect on normal cells than cancer cells as compared with free DOX, while increased cytotoxicity was evidenced on the cancer cell line against the former sample than the covalently conjugated RGO-PEG-DOX. So, the successful distribution and release of the anticancer drug into acidic microenvironment of the cancerous cells would bring about excellent therapeutic efficacy with reduced side effects than pure GO.

Ultrasensitive electrochemical detection of methyl parathion pesticide based on cationic water-soluble pillar[5]arene and reduced graphene nanocomposite.

We report a rapid, sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor based on pillar[5]arene (CP5) reduced graphene (rGO) nanohybrid-modified glassy carbon electrode CP5-rGO/GCE for the trace detection of methyl parathion (MP) by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) for the first time. Compared to beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD)-functionalized reduced graphene (rGO)-modified GCE β-CD-rGO/GCE, the proposed CP5-rGO/GCE sensor exhibits excellent electrochemical catalytic activity, rapid response, high sensitivity, good reproducibility and anti-interference ability towards MP. The recognition mechanism of β-CD/MP and CP5/MP was studied by 1H NMR. The results indicate a higher supramolecular recognition capability between CP5 and MP compared to that between β-CD and MP. The β-CD-rGO and CP5-rGO nano-composites were prepared via a wet chemistry approach. The resulting nano-composites have been characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), charge transfer resistance (Rct) and zeta potential. The CP5-rGO/GCE combines the merits of CP5 and rGO, and is used for quantitative detection of MP. It has a low detection limit of 0.0003 μM (S/N = 3) and a linear response range of 0.001–150 μM for MP. This method has been used to detect MP in soil and waste water samples with satisfactory results. This study provides a promising electrochemical sensing platform and is a promising tool for the rapid, facile and sensitive analysis of MP.

Novel Electrochemical Sensors Based on Cuprous Oxide-Electrochemically Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites Modified Electrode toward Sensitive Detection of Sunset Yellow.

Control and detection of sunset yellow is an utmost demanding issue, due to the presence of potential risks for human health if excessively consumed or added. Herein, cuprous oxide-electrochemically reduced graphene nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode (Cu2O-ErGO/GCE) was developed for the determination of sunset yellow. The Cu2O-ErGO/GCE was fabricated by drop-casting Cu2O-GO dispersion on the GCE surface following a potentiostatic reduction of graphene oxide (GO). Scanning electron microscope and X-ray powder diffractometer was used to characterize the morphology and microstructure of the modification materials, such as Cu2O nanoparticles and Cu2O-ErGO nanocomposites. The electrochemical behavior of sunset yellow on the bare GCE, ErGO/GCE, and Cu2O-ErGO/GCE were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and second-derivative linear sweep voltammetry, respectively. The analytical parameters (including pH value, sweep rate, and accumulation parameters) were explored systematically. The results show that the anodic peak currents of Cu2O-ErGO /GCE are 25-fold higher than that of the bare GCE, due to the synergistic enhancement effect between Cu2O nanoparticles and ErGO sheets. Under the optimum detection conditions, the anodic peak currents are well linear to the concentrations of sunset yellow, ranging from 2.0 × 10−8 mol/L to 2.0 × 10−5 mol/L and from 2.0 × 10−5 mol/L to 1.0 × 10−4 mol/L with a low limit of detection (S/N = 3, 6.0 × 10−9 mol/L). Moreover, Cu2O-ErGO/GCE was successfully used for the determination of sunset yellow in beverages and food with good recovery. This proposed Cu2O-ErGO/GCE has an attractive prospect applications on the determination of sunset yellow in diverse real samples.

An electrochemical Bisphenol F sensor based on ZnO/G nano composite and CTAB surface modified carbon paste electrode architecture.

Due to the enforcement of regulatory restrictions to prevent risk to human health from Bisphenol A (BPA), its structural analogue Bisphenol F (BPF) has been introduced into the market as an alternative. But however recent studies describe BPF as an effectual endocrine disruptor. Hence, there is an indispensible need for research concerning BPF human and environmental exposure level. In this work, we have elicited the development of an economical electrochemical sensor, to quantify and investigate in detail the electrochemical behavior of BPF using carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with zinc oxide reduced graphene nanocomposite (ZnO/G) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The ZnO/G was synthesized using Hummers method and characterized by spectroscopic techniques. Under optimal conditions, conductive and biocompatible ZnO/G/CTAB/MCPE offered ultra sensitivity for BPF recognition by Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV), with a detection limit of 0.06 μM. Lowering of activation energy for electro-oxidation of BPF and absence of peak for interfering molecule Ascorbic acid (AA) makes it an unique sensor for the detection of BPF with significant analytical advantage over other electrodes reported in literature. Versatility of the electrode was demonstrated by applying it to real time analysis of human body fluids, canned beverage and different water samples fortified with BPF. The satisfactory recoveries obtained, consequently authenticates the practicality of the proposed sensor.

Tin Oxide/Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite-Modified Electrode for Selective and Sensitive Detection of Riboflavin

The present work evaluates the electrocatalytic performance of hydrothermally derived tin oxide/ reduced graphene nanocomposites (SnO2/RGO) toward riboflavin (VB2) detection. The physicochemical properties of the samples were studied by using various analytical techniques. The cyclic voltammetric profiles reveal the quasi-reversible catalytic behavior of electrodes and the linear plot evidence the interfacial electron transfer kinetics dominates the diffusion of VB2 on SnO2/RGO. The Anodic stripping voltammetry was used to optimize the pertinent time (80 sec) and potential (−1.3 V) to study their influence on anodic peak current responses. The square wave pulse voltammetry responses exhibit a significant linearity in the range of 0.1–150 μmol.L−1 and lower detection limit of 34 nmol.L−1 without any interference effect. The sensitivity perceived above 98.5% in real sample analyses assures that the prepared synergetic electrode can be employed for VB2 quantification in pharmaceutical compounds and energy drinks in practice with adequate outcomes.

Structural, thermal, rheological and mechanical properties of polypropylene/graphene nanoplatelets composites: Effect of particle size and melt mixing conditions

Graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) of various sizes were mixed with polypropylene (PP) in an internal mixer to prepare composites. The effects of mixing conditions, GNP size and concentration in composites were investigated. The composites were characterized at different scales, using electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and rheometry. It was shown that the PP/GNP composites had to be considered as non‐intercalated and non‐exfoliated microcomposites. However, the thermal, rheological and mechanical properties of the PP/GNP microcomposites were improved with respect to that of the matrix and similar to those of thermoplastic/organoclay or reduced graphene nanocomposites. In the best cases, storage modulus plateau in the glassy domain was increased by 30% and onset of degradation temperature by 40°C. Finally, in the investigated range of this study, the mixing conditions applied in the internal mixer did not affect the structural and rheological properties of the PP/GNP composites. POLYM. ENG. In situ fabrication of green reduced graphene-based biocompatible anode for efficient energy recycle

Improving the anode configuration to enhance biocompatibility and accelerate electron shuttling is critical for efficient energy recovery in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). In this paper, green reduced graphene nanocomposite was successfully coated using layer-by-layer assembly technique onto carbon brush anode. The modified anode achieved a 3.2-fold higher power density of 33.7 W m−3 at a current density of 69.4 A m−3 with a 75% shorter start period. As revealed in the characterization, the green synthesized nanocomposite film affords larger surface roughness for microbial colonization. Besides, gold nanoparticles, which anchored on graphene sheets, promise the relatively high electroactive sites and facilitate electron transfer from electricigens to the anode. The reduction-oxidation peaks in cyclic voltammograms indicated the mechanism of surface cytochromes facilitated current generation while the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy confirmed the enhanced electron transfer from surface cytochrome to electrode. The green synthesis process has the potential to generate a high performing anode in further applications of MFCs.

In situ synthesis of silver/chemically reduced graphene nanocomposite and its use for low temperature conductive paste

In this work, we succeeded in the synthesis of Ag/chemically reduced graphene (Ag/G) nanocomposite by a facile in situ one-pot solvothermal route. X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectra and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results revealed the formation of Ag and the reduction of graphite oxide to graphene during the one-pot process. Scanning electron microscopy observation indicated that spherical Ag particles with a size less than 100 nm are wrapped by graphene. The Ag/G nanocomposite was used in a low temperature conductive paste. Thermal analysis was conducted to determine the proper curing process of the Ag/G conductive paste. The Ag/G conductive paste that contains 0.6 wt% graphene exhibits low sheet resistance (22 mΩ/sq/25 µm) and good stability after cured at 150 °C for 30 min, which made us believe that the Ag/G nanocomposite is a promising candidate for conductive paste.

Construction of iron-polymer-graphene nanocomposites with low nonspecific adsorption and strong quenching ability for competitive immunofluorescent detection of biomarkers in GM crops

We developed a new immunofluorescent biosensor by utilizing a novel nanobody (Nb) and iron-polymer-graphene nanocomposites for sensitive detection of 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase from Agrobacdterium tumefaciens strain CP4 (CP4-EPSPS), which considered as biomarkers of genetically modified (GM) crops. Specifically, we prepared iron doped polyacrylic hydrazide modified reduced graphene nanocomposites (Fe@RGO/PAH) by in-situ polymerization approach and subsequent a one-pot reaction with hydrazine. The resulting Fe@RGO/PAH nanocomposites displayed low nonspecific adsorption to analytes (11% quenching caused by nonspecific adsorption) due to electrostatic, energetic and steric effect of the nanocomposites. After Nb immobilizing, the as-prepared Fe@RGO/PAH/Nbs showed good selectivity and high quenching ability (92% quenching) in the presence of antigen (Ag) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) modified CdTe QDs (Ag/QDs@PEG), which is a nearly 4 fold than that of the unmodified GO in same condition. The high quenching ability of Fe@RGO/PAH/Nbs can be used for detection of CP4-EPSPS based on competitive immunoassay with a linearly proportional concentration range of 5–100ng/mL and a detection limit of 0.34ng/mL. The good stability, reproducibility and specificity of the resulting immunofluorescent biosensor are demonstrated and might open a new window for investigation of fluorescent sensing with numerous multifunctional graphene based materials.

Enhanced antimicrobial activities of silver-nanoparticle-decorated reduced graphene nanocomposites against oral pathogens

As a means of capitalizing on the synergistic properties between reduced graphene nanosheets (R-GNs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), an efficient and convenient chemical reduction method was used to prepare silver-nanoparticle-decorated reduced graphene nanocomposites (R-GNs/Ag). The products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy, which confirmed the loading of well-dispersed silver nanoparticles on reduced graphene sheets. Their antimicrobial activities against oral pathogens such as Candida albicans, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus mutans, and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans were investigated by MIC determination, the counting of colony-forming units (CFU), agar diffusion tests, and growth curve observation. Compared with pure R-GNs and AgNPs, R-GNs/Ag composites exhibited enhanced antimicrobial properties owing to highly dispersed AgNPs on R-GNs.

Polyethylene-thermally reduced graphene nanocomposites: comparison of masterbatch and direct melt mixing approaches on mechanical, thermal, rheological, and morphological properties

Two routes of nanocomposite generation, viz., the masterbatch method and direct melt mixing, were compared in the current study in relation with the properties of the polyethylene-thermally reduced graphene nanocomposites compatibilized with functional polymers. Filler dispersion was observed to improve in the masterbatch method due to preferential interactions of compatibilizer with the filler, before melt mixing with the matrix polymer. This also translated into improved mechanical properties as more than two times increment in tensile modulus was observed in the composite HDPE/G/5 EAA/MB (41 %, masterbatch method) as compared to HDPE/G/5 EAA/MM (20 %, melt mixing method). In addition, different compatibilizers also influenced the properties to a different extent owing to their physical interactions with the filler; however, composites generated with masterbatch were always superior in extent of property enhancements. Increasing the compatibilizer content to 10 % also caused varying degrees of matrix plasticization. The storage modulus as well as the complex viscosity of the HDPE/G/5 EAA/MB composite was the highest as compared to HDPE/G/5 EMAZ/MB and HDPE/G/5 EVA-MA/MB composites. HDPE/G/5 EAA/MB and HDPE/G/5 EMAZ/MB composites did not show any decrease in degree of crystallinity as compared to pure polymer, whereas the corresponding composites generated with melt mixing exhibited slight decrease in the crystallinity. The composites were observed to have enhanced thermal stability as compared to HDPE. Five percent EAA-based composites exhibited even higher thermal stability than did HDPE/G composites due to improved filler dispersion. Composites generated with the masterbatch approach had also higher degree of phase mixing than the corresponding melt mixed composites.

Nonisothermal and isothermal crystallization behavior of isotactic polypropylene/chemically reduced graphene nanocomposites

Graphene oxide was firstly prepared by a modified Hummers method and then reduced via hydrazine reduction method to obtain chemically reduced graphene (CRG). The morphology of CRG dispersed in the isotactic polypropylene (iPP) matrix was observed using transmission electron microscope and rheological measurement methods. Nonisothermal and isothermal crystallization behaviors of iPP/CRG nanocomposites were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy methods, respectively. Nonisothermal crystallization measurement revealed that CRG elevated the crystallization temperature of iPP due to the nucleating effect of CRG. And during isothermal crystallization process, the half time crystallization of nanocomposites was significantly reduced. Furthermore, the images of polarized optical microscopy also exhibited that the nucleation density of nanocomposites was much higher than that of neat iPP due to the heterogeneous nucleation of CRG even at a loading of 0.5%. Effect of amphiphilic compatibilizers on the filler dispersion and properties of polyethylene—thermally reduced graphene nanocomposites

ABSTRACTCompatibilizers of different chemical structures and specifications were used to enhance the filler exfoliation in nanocomposites of polyethylene and thermally reduced graphene prepared by melt mixing route. The mechanical performance of the compatibilized nanocomposites was observed to be better than PE/G nanocomposites due to enhanced extent of filler exfoliation and distribution. Highest increase of 45% in tensile modulus and 13% in peak stress was observed in the composites. Overall, from the mechanical, rheological, thermal, and calorimetric properties, the compatibilizers with best performance were ethylene acrylic acid (EAA) copolymer and chlorinated polyethylene (CPE25). Furthermore, the extent of filler exfoliation was observed to increase with increasing EAA content thus confirming positive interactions between EAA and thermally reduced graphene, though no specific chemical interactions could be detected. The composite properties were observed to reach maximum around 7.5 wt % EAA content, followed by reduced performance due to extensive matrix plasticization. The observed behaviors were a result of interplay of opposing factors like filler exfoliation due to compatibilizer addition and matrix plasticization due to its lower molecular weight, thus the observed optimum comaptibilizer amount was specific to the compatibilizer. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nanocomposites of AgInZnS and graphene nanosheets as efficient photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution.

In this study, AgInZnS-reduced graphene (AIZS-rGO) nanocomposites with tunable band gap absorption and large specific surface area were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal route, which showed highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under visible-light irradiation. The relationships between their crystal structures, morphology, surface chemical states and photocatalytic activity have been explored in detail. Importantly, the AIZS-rGO nanocomposites with 0.02 wt% of graphene exhibited the highest hydrogen production rate of 1.871 mmol h(-1) g(-1), which was nearly 2 times the hydrogen production rate when using pure AIZS nanoparticles as the photocatalyst. This high photocatalytic H2-production activity was attributed predominantly to the incorporation of graphene sheets, which demonstrated an obvious influence on the structure and optical properties of the AIZS nanoparticles. In the AIZS-rGO nanocomposites, graphene could not only serve as an effective supporting layer but also is a recombination center for conduction band electrons and valence band holes. It is believed that this kind of graphene-based material would attract much attention as a promising photocatalyst with a high efficiency and a low cost for photocatalytic H2 evolution and facilitates their application in the environmental protection field.

Compatibilized polyethylene—thermally reduced graphene nanocomposites: Interfacial interactions and hyperspectral mapping for component distribution

Ethylene-co-acrylic acid (EAA) and ethylene-co-methacrylic acid ionomer (EMAZ) copolymers were used as compatibilizers for polyethylene-graphene nanocomposites generated by melt mixing. At 5 wt% content, the EAA compatibilizer enhanced the tensile modulus of PE by 40 % and shear modulus by >300 % (1 rad/s) due to efficient dispersion of graphene platelets which helped in effective stress transfer. These also resulted in enhanced thermal stability for PE-EAA-G nanocomposite as compared to nanocomposite with EMAZ. The properties of the nanocomposites were significantly better than the conventional nanocomposites based on layered silicate materials. Mapping of the component distribution in the nanocomposites was demonstrated by using hyperspectral imaging. The nanocomposite with EAA exhibited higher extent of spectral signal mixing due to better mixing of filler and compatibilizer in PE matrix. On the other hand, nanocomposite with EMAZ had no spectral mixing as the components did not mix optimally with each other. The DSC thermogram for this nanocomposite also exhibited a small shoulder at low temperature probably due to immiscibility of the compatibilizer with the matrix polymer. The hyperspectral imaging and mapping was thus demonstrated to be a useful method for determination of component distribution in complex nanocomposite systems.
