1. 1. Hibernators had 42·5 per cent less red blood cell 2,3 diphosphoglycerate (RBC 2,3 DPG) and 55 per cent less red blood cell adenosine triphosphate (RBC ATP) than active ground squirrels. 2. 2. Hyperoxia results in a decrease in RBC ATP and 2,3 DPG in both active and hibernating ground squirrels.
