In some coal washery operations there is considerable loss of coal value due to inefficient operation of the fine coal treatment circuit. Recent developments in the use of various gravity equipments in fine-coal beneficiation have been discussed and their relative merits have been compared. The possibility of using a Mozley mineral separator for processing of flotation tailings and recovery of clean coal has been examined on the basis of the investigations carried out. Laboratory scale experiments are reported using a fine coal sample from waste tailings of a coal preparation plant. The results of optimisation of process variables and co-relation developed between the operating variables of the equipment and the yield and ash content of the product have been presented. The possible application areas are discussed including fine coal beneficiation and refuse treatment.
