Framing News of Hamas Attacks: Automated Journalism Practices at NewsGPT.ai

The Hamas militant group's attack on the population of Israel was recorded in the Model Automated Journalism platform, NewsGPT.ai. The platform, led by CEO Alan Levy, claims to be the world's first AI-generated news. This research aimed to reveal the news framework presented by the NewsGPT.ai platform regarding the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Specifically, it investigated the way NewsGPT.ai positions Palestine and Israel in the news coverage. It used a qualitative approach with Robert N. Entman's framing theory. Entman's main concepts include defining problems, diagnosing causes, making moral judgments, and treatment recommendations. Within 10 selected news, an information bias regarding the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, was found. The news produced by NewsGPT.ai is subjective, in terms of the theme, reporting angle, and diction for the news object. Hamas tends to be associated with terrorists. The word terrorist is dominant in the text, referring to the actions of Hamas. Some terms that typically appear are acts of terrorism, terrorist attacks, fighting terrorism, and terrorist organizations. NewsGPT.ai presents information bias regarding this issue with a dominant emphasis on strengthening support for Israel. The use of AI in journalism, especially NewsGPT.ai, still shows bias towards certain groups.

Model for Predicting the Effect of Sibutramine Therapy in Obesity.

Background: The development of models predicting response to weight loss therapy using sibutramine is found in only a few cases. The objective of the work is to develop a data-driven method of personalized recommendation for obesity treatment that would predict the response to sibutramine based on the current set of patient parameters. Methods: The decision system is built on the XGBoost classification algorithm along with recursive feature selection and Shapley data valuation. Using the results of clinical trials, it was trained to estimate the probability of overcoming a weight loss threshold. The model was evaluated by the accuracy metric using the Leave-One-Out cross-validation. Results: The model for predicting response to sibutramine treatment over 3 months has an accuracy of 71%. The model for predicting outcomes at the sixth month visit based on results at 3 months has an accuracy of 80%. Conclusions: Although our developed prediction model may not exhibit high precision compared to certain benchmarks, it significantly outperforms random chance or models relying only on BMI parameters. Our model used the available range of laboratory tests, which makes it possible to use this model for routine clinical use and help doctors decide whether to prescribe sibutramine.

Single and combined strategies for mesenchymal stem cell exosomes alleviate liver fibrosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis of preclinical animal models.

Background: The efficacy of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in treating liver fibrosis has been supported by various clinical studies. However, stem cell transplantation is limited in clinical application due to its low survival rate, low liver implantation rate, and possible carcinogenicity. Recently, there has been increasing interest in the use of MSC-exos due to their widespread availability, low immunogenicity, and non-carcinogenic properties. Numerous studies have demonstrated the potential of MSC-exos in treating liver fibrosis and preventing progression to end-stage liver disease. Objective: This study aimed to systematically investigate the efficacy of MSC-exos single administration in the treatment of hepatic fibrosis and the combined advantages of MSC-exos in combination with drug therapy (MSC-exos-drugs). Methods: Data sources included PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Library, which were built up to January 2024. The population, intervention, comparison, outcomes, and study design (PICOS) principle was used to screen the literature, and the quality of the literature was evaluated to assess the risk of bias. Finally, the data from each study's outcome indicators were extracted for a combined analysis. Results: After screening, a total of 18 papers (19 studies) were included, of which 12 involved MSC-exos single administration for the treatment of liver fibrosis and 6 involved MSC-exos-drugs for the treatment of liver fibrosis. Pooled analysis revealed that MSC-exos significantly improved liver function, promoted the repair of damaged liver tissue, and slowed the progression of hepatic fibrosis and that MSC-exos-drugs were more efficacious than MSC-exos single administration. Subgroup analyses revealed that the use of AD-MSC-exos resulted in more consistent and significant efficacy when MSC-exos was used to treat hepatic fibrosis. For MSC-exos-drugs, a more stable end result is obtained by kit extraction. Similarly, infusion through the abdominal cavity is more effective. Conclusion: The results suggest that MSC-exos can effectively treat liver fibrosis and that MSC-exos-drugs are more effective than MSC-exos single administration. Although the results of the subgroup analyses provide recommendations for clinical treatment, a large number of high-quality experimental validations are still needed. An Update on Eradication of Helicobacter Pylori in Iran: A Review.

Helicobacter pylori, the most prevalent infection in the world, has great importance due to being related to peptic ulcer disease, gastric metaplasia, dysplasia, and even gastric adenocarcinoma or mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. The standard H. pylori eradication regimen is based on antibiotic susceptibility testing. If susceptibility testing is not available, a standard treatment regimen will be recommended based on records of H. pylori resistance rates to antibiotics in a region or locally proven highly effective regimens (equal to or higher than 90% eradication rate). The aim of this review was to define suitable recommendations for local treatment in different cities of Iran. This review article consists of randomized controlled trials related to H. pylori eradication in Iran. Data including the kind of therapy, number of patients and per-protocol H. pylori eradication rates were recorded in data gathering forms. Data search was conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar databases from 2018 to December 2023. According to our review of Iranian articles regarding first-line H. pylori eradication regimens, these treatment protocols could be recommended: Bismuth-clarithromycin quadruple therapy in Ardabil, bismuth-clarithromycin quadruple therapy with probiotics in Birjand, standard triple therapy in Ilam, bismuth quadruple therapy or bismuth triple therapy or concomitant regimen in Sari, sequential therapy in Tehran and bismuth quadruple therapy in Yazd. These regimes can be extended to other regions that have a similar situation. According to the reports of Iranian researchers, a quinolone-containing regimen (levofloxacin preferred) is recommended for second-line eradication therapy. Various H. pylori eradication regimens can be used as first-line therapy; however, choices for second-line therapy are limited. We recommend the quinolone-containing regimens as the preferred second-line therapy.

Artificial intelligence-based personalized clinical decision-making for patients with localized prostate cancer: surgery versus radiotherapy.

Surgery and radiotherapy are primary nonconservative treatments for prostate cancer (PCa). However, personalizing treatment options between these treatment modalities is challenging due to unclear criteria. We developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based model that can identify patients with localized PCa who would benefit more from either radiotherapy or surgery, thereby providing personalized clinical decision-making. Data from consecutive patients with localized PCa who received radiotherapy or surgery with complete records of clinicopathological variables and follow-up results in 12 registries of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database were analyzed. Patients from 7 registries were randomly assigned to training (TD) and internal validation datasets (IVD) at a 9:1 ratio. The remaining 5 registries constituted the external validation dataset (EVD). TD was divided into training-radiotherapy (TRD) and training-surgery (TSD) datasets, and IVD was divided into internal-radiotherapy (IRD) and internal-surgery (ISD) datasets. Six models for radiotherapy and surgery were trained using TRD and TSD to predict radiotherapy survival probability (RSP) and surgery survival probability (SSP), respectively. The models with the highest concordance index (C-index) on IRD and ISD were chosen to form the final treatment recommendation model (FTR). FTR recommendations were based on the higher value between RSP and SSP. Kaplan-Meier curves were generated for patients receiving recommended (consistent group) and nonrecommended treatments (inconsistent group), which were compared using the log-rank test. The study included 118 236 patients, categorized into TD (TRD: 44 621; TSD: 41 500), IVD (IRD: 4949; ISD: 4621), and EVD (22 545). Both radiotherapy and surgery models accurately predicted RSP and SSP (C-index: 0.735-0.787 and 0.769-0.797, respectively). The consistent group exhibited higher survival rates than the inconsistent group, particularly among patients not suitable for active surveillance (P < .001). FTR accurately identifies patients with localized PCa who would benefit more from either radiotherapy or surgery, offering clinicians an effective AI tool to make informed choices between these 2 treatments.

Surgeon Preference for Maximizing Medical Care Is Associated with Recommending More Extensive Surgery for Low-Risk Thyroid Cancer.

Background: While patient-level determinants of total thyroidectomy use have been well described, surgeon-level drivers of more extensive surgery are present and less well described. This survey sought to examine the associations between surgeons' operative recommendations, their beliefs about cancer, and their attitudes about medical maximizing-minimizing. Methods: A mixed-mode, cross-sectional survey was administered in September 2020 via mail and email to 222 thyroid surgeons identified in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Provider Utilization and Payment Physician and Other Practitioners dataset. Participants were asked their treatment recommendation for a healthy 45-year-old woman with a solitary 2.0-cm papillary thyroid cancer. Surgeons were assessed with the Brief Worry Scale and a validated, single-item measure of cancer-related worry. The Clinician Maximizer-Minimizer scale was used to assess the extent of medical care that physicians tend to favor with their patients. Participants were categorized into terciles based on their responses to the Maximizer-Minimizer scale. The highest scoring tercile ("Maximizers") was compared with the two lower terciles by Student's t-tests, chi-square, ANOVA, and logistic regression. Results: Of the 149 surgeons (response rate 67.1%), 34.9% recommended total thyroidectomy with or without central neck dissection (CND), and 65.1% recommended lobectomy. Overall, the medical Maximizer-Minimizer scale had an average score of 24.6 (SD 6.8). There were no differences between surgeons' age, race, annual thyroidectomy volume, or practice setting by their Maximizer-Minimizer classification. Participants who recommended total thyroidectomy with or without CND had significantly higher Maximizer-Minimizer scores than those recommending lobectomy (25.9 ± 7.2 vs. 23.8 ± 6.4, p = 0.03). Those classified as maximizers also had more cancer-related worry on both the single-item and Brief Worry Scales (p = 0.02). On logistic regression controlling for age, sex, race, specialty training, practice setting, and annual thyroidectomy volume, maximizers were still more likely to recommend total thyroidectomy with or without a CND (OR 2.4, [CI 1.01-5.55], p = 0.047). Conclusions: Medical maximizing-minimizing tendencies represent one of potentially many unmeasured surgeon characteristics that may explain persistent patterns of over-diagnosis, over-treatment, and over-screening. Surgeons may benefit from awareness of how their own tendencies influence their surgical recommendations in patients with low-risk thyroid cancer.

Management of Guttate Psoriasis: A Systematic Review.

Guttate psoriasis (GP) is a variant of psoriasis characterized by scattered "drop-like" papules and plaques, accounting for up to a quarter of psoriasis cases. Although GP can clear within 3 to 4 months, up to 39% of cases may progress to chronic plaque psoriasis. Currently, there is a paucity of literature investigating the efficacy of different treatment modalities. This systematic review aims to synthesize all available data on GP treatment efficacy. A literature search was conducted using Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and CINAHL with no date limits. A total of 75 studies satisfied eligibility criteria and were analyzed. Most studies were case reports, series, or retrospective studies. Only 5 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were identified. For topical treatments, corticosteroids and calcipotriol creams had the most evidence for efficacy. Four categories of systemic therapies were identified: traditional immunosuppressants, antibiotics, retinoids, and biologics. Evidence regarding antibiotic therapy suggests minimal connection between underlying infection resolution and GP lesion remission. Phototherapy had the most robust evidence, with narrowband ultraviolet B (UVB) being the most effective. Our findings are limited by high heterogeneity in study design and high risk of bias. Based on our review, we propose the following treatment algorithm. As first-line therapy, we recommend topical corticosteroids and calcipotriol cream, in combination with phototherapy. As supportive therapy, we recommend antibiotics if applicable. For second-line therapy, we recommend methotrexate or cyclosporine. For severe and refractory GP, biologics can be used as third-line treatment. RCTs are needed to provide higher quality evidence to create standardized treatment recommendations.

The effects of conventional treatment in addition to Pilates on biopsychosocial status in chronic neck pain: A randomized clinical trial.

Although guidelines and systematic reviews recommend the use of exercise in the treatment of chronic pain and neck pain, there are no clear recommendations for conservative treatments frequently used in clinics. The effect of supporting clinical Pilates exercises with passive physiotherapy methods on biopsychosocial status is still unknown. The objective was to investigate the effects of conventional treatment (CT) in addition to clinical Pilates on pain levels, physical condition, functional status, and psychosocial status in individuals with chronic neck pain. Fifty women were randomly divided into 2groups, the clinical Pilates group (Pilates, n= 25), and the group receiving CT in addition to clinical Pilates (Pilates-CT, n= 25). Both groups received treatment 3days a week for 6weeks. The CT program involved the implementation of hot pack (HP) application, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), and therapeutic ultrasound (US) to the cervical area. CT in addition to Pilates was more effective in reducing the Visual Analog Scale (at rest and during activity), Neck Disability Index, Fear-Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire, NeckPix Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-depression, and Cognitive Exercise Therapy Approach-Biopsychosocial questionnaire scores (p< 0.05) and in increasing the degree of change in the extension range of motion (ROM) and cervical flexor endurance values and scores in the energy parameter of Short Form-36 (p< 0.05). CT provided in addition to Pilates was more effective in reducing pain levels, disability, fear of movement, depression levels, and negative biopsychosocial status and improving extension ROM and cervical flexor endurance, neck awareness, and the energy/vitality parameter of quality of life in individuals with chronic neck pain.

SNO-EANO-EURACAN consensus on management of pineal parenchymal tumors.

Pineal parenchymal tumors are rare neoplasms for which evidence-based treatment recommendations are lacking. These tumors vary in biology, clinical characteristics, and prognosis, requiring treatment that ranges from surgical resection alone to intensive multimodal antineoplastic therapy. Recently, international collaborative studies have shed light on the genomic landscape of these tumors, leading to refinement in molecular-based disease classification in the 5th edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of tumors of the central nervous system. In this review, we summarize the literature on diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, and suggest pragmatic recommendations for the clinical management of patients presenting with intrinsic pineal region masses including parenchymal tumors (pineocytoma, pineal parenchymal tumor of intermediate differentiation, and pineoblastoma), pineal cyst, and papillary tumors of the pineal region.

Validation of predicted individual treatment effects in out of sample respondents.

Personalized medicine promises the ability to improve patient outcomes by tailoring treatment recommendations to the likelihood that any given patient will respond well to a given treatment. It is important that predictions of treatment response be validated and replicated in independent data to support their use in clinical practice. In this paper, we propose and test an approach for validating predictions of individual treatment effects with continuous outcomes across samples that uses matching in a test (validation) sample to match individuals in the treatment and control arms based on their predicted treatment response and their predicted response under control. To examine the proposed validation approach, we conducted simulations where test data is generated from either an identical, similar, or unrelated process to the training data. We also examined the impact of nuisance variables. To demonstrate the use of this validation procedure in the context of predicting individual treatment effects in the treatment of alcohol use disorder, we apply our validation procedure using data from a clinical trial of combined behavioral and pharmacotherapy treatments. We find that the validation algorithm accurately confirms validation and lack of validation, and also provides insights into cases where test data were generated under similar, but not identical conditions. We also show that the presence of nuisance variables detrimentally impacts algorithm performance, which can be partially reduced though the use of variable selection methods. An advantage of the approach is that it can be widely applied to different predictive methods.

European Network for Optimization of Veterinary Antimicrobial Therapy (ENOVAT) guidelines for antimicrobial use in canine acute diarrhoea

Acute diarrhoea is a common presentation in dogs, and a common reason for antimicrobial prescription and nutraceutical use. This evidence-based guideline provides recommendations for antimicrobial and probiotic treatment of canine acute diarrhoea (CAD). A multidisciplinary panel developed the recommendations by adhering to the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) framework. The opinions of stakeholders (general veterinary practitioners and dog owners) were collected and incorporated to ensure the applicability of this guideline. Four strong recommendations informed by high certainty evidence, and three conditional recommendations informed by very low or low certainty evidence, were drafted by the panel, along with an ungraded section on diagnostic work-up of dogs with acute diarrhoea. The ENOVAT guidelines initiative encourages national or regional guideline makers to use the evidence presented in this document, and the supporting systematic review, to draft national or local guidance documents.

A Lung Nodule Dataset with Histopathology-based Cancer Type Annotation

Recently, Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems have emerged as indispensable tools in clinical diagnostic workflows, significantly alleviating the burden on radiologists. Nevertheless, despite their integration into clinical settings, CAD systems encounter limitations. Specifically, while CAD systems can achieve high performance in the detection of lung nodules, they face challenges in accurately predicting multiple cancer types. This limitation can be attributed to the scarcity of publicly available datasets annotated with expert-level cancer type information. This research aims to bridge this gap by providing publicly accessible datasets and reliable tools for medical diagnosis, facilitating a finer categorization of different types of lung diseases so as to offer precise treatment recommendations. To achieve this objective, we curated a diverse dataset of lung Computed Tomography (CT) images, comprising 330 annotated nodules (nodules are labeled as bounding boxes) from 95 distinct patients. The quality of the dataset was evaluated using a variety of classical classification and detection models, and these promising results demonstrate that the dataset has a feasible application and further facilitate intelligent auxiliary diagnosis.

Comparison of Patients Classified as High-Risk between International Cardiovascular Disease Primary Prevention Guidelines.

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) primary prevention guidelines classify people at high risk and recommended for pharmacological treatment based on clinical criteria and absolute CVD risk estimation. Despite relying on similar evidence, recommendations vary between international guidelines, which may impact who is recommended to receive treatment for CVD prevention. Objective: To determine the agreement in treatment recommendations according to guidelines from Australia, England and the United States. Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (n = 2647). Adults ≥ 40 years were classified as high-risk and recommended for treatment according to Australia, England and United States CVD prevention guidelines. Agreement in high-risk classification and recommendation for treatment was assessed by Kappa statistic. Results: Participants were middle aged, 49% were male and 38% were white. The proportion recommended for treatment was highest using the United States guidelines (n = 1318, 49.8%) followed by the English guidelines (n = 1276, 48.2%). In comparison, only 26.6% (n = 705) of participants were classified as recommended for treatment according to the Australian guidelines. There was moderate agreement in the recommendation for treatment between the English and United States guidelines (κ = 0.69 [0.64-0.74]). In comparison, agreement in recommendation for treatment was minimal between the Australian and United States guidelines (κ = 0.47 [0.43-0.52]) and weak between the Australian and English guidelines (κ = 0.50 [0.45-0.55]). Conclusions: Despite similar evidence underpinning guidelines, there is little agreement between guidelines regarding the people recommended to receive treatment for CVD prevention. These findings suggest greater consistency in high-risk classification between CVD prevention guidelines may be required.

Transiliac-Transsacral Screw Fixation is Superior to Lumbopelvic Stabilization in the Treatment of Minimally Displaced Sacral H-/U-Type Fragility Fractures.

Retrospective Cohort Study. To compare the outcomes and complications of transiliac-transsacral screw fixation (TIS) and lumbopelvic fixation (LPS), the 2 most common fixation methods for nondisplaced and minimally displaced H-/U- type sacral fragility fractures. Medical records of patients treated with TIS or LPS for nondisplaced and minimally displaced H-/U-type sacral fragility fractures at 2 level A trauma centers between 2012 and 2022 were analyzed. Postoperative low back pain and mobility levels were assessed as primary outcomes before discharge and at 6weeks and 6months postoperatively. Surgery time, blood loss, and surgical complication rates were assessed as secondary outcomes. Statistical analyses consisted of Fisher's exact tests for frequency distributions and Mann-Whitney-U tests and t-tests for group comparisons. 52 patients undergoing TIS (mean age: 78 ± 9years) and 36 patients undergoing LPS (74 ± 10years) with no discrepancy in demographic parameters were identified. There were no differences in low back pain levels between the 2 groups before surgery, before discharge, at 6weeks postoperatively, and at 6months postoperatively (P > 0.05). There were no differences in mobility levels before surgery, before discharge, at 6weeks postoperatively, and at 6months postoperatively (P > 0.05). Duration of surgery was shorter after TIS (36 ± 13min) compared to LPS (113 ± 31min) (P < 0.0001). Intraoperative blood loss was lower for TIS (median <20mL) compared to LPS (median 125mL) (P < 0.0001). Postoperative radiculopathy was less frequent after TIS (n = 1) compared to LPS (n = 3) (P > 0.05). Median length of stay was shorter after TIS (11days) compared to LPS (14days) (P < 0.05). Rates of reoperations directly related to the index surgery were lower after TIS (n = 2) compared to LPS (n = 10) (P < 0.01). Implant failures were observed only after LPS (n = 1). Patients with nondisplaced and minimally displaced H-/U- type sacral fragility fractures may preferably be treated using TIS, as it is equivalent to LPS in terms of low back pain reduction and restoration of mobility, but allows for shorter operative time, less blood loss and lower reoperation rates. Prospective randomized studies should be conducted to substantiate our findings and develop distinct treatment recommendations.

Overview of Hepatitis C in Pregnancy: Screening, Management and Treatment.

The rising prevalence of hepatitis C infections among individuals of reproductive age further emphasizes the importance of evidence-based management of HCV during pregnancy to minimize perinatal transmission and to optimize maternal and fetal outcomes. In this review, we discuss the most recent recommendations on the management of HCV in pregnancy, including recommendations for screening and treatment during pregnancy and the postpartum period, as well as infant management to reduce perinatal transmission of HCV. Current guidelines recommend universal HCV screening during each pregnancy. With varying guidance regarding the use of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) during pregnancy, recent studies have focused on the safety and efficacy of DAA initiation during pregnancy. Additionally, there has been an increased focus on improving treatment rates in the postpartum period through innovative linkage to care efforts, telemedicine, and additional efforts reducing barriers to care for patients.

Clinical Management of Primary Aldosteronism: An Update.

Despite carrying an excess risk of cardiovascular events, primary aldosteronism (PA) is a commonly overlooked secondary form of arterial hypertension. An increased awareness of its high prevalence and broader screening strategies are urgently needed to improve its detection rate and allow early diagnosis and targeted treatment. For patients with unilateral PA, these measures can correct hyperaldosteronism and ensure cure of hypertension, even when resistant to drug treatment, thus preventing adverse cardiovascular events. Among these, atrial fibrillation is the most common, but left ventricular hypertrophy, stroke, chronic kidney disease, and myocardial infarction also occur more often than in patients with hypertension and no PA. Young patients, who have higher chances of being cured long term, and high-risk patients, such as those with stage III or resistant hypertension, are those who will benefit most from an early diagnosis of PA. Therefore, the implementation of strategies to detect PA by a simplified diagnostic algorithm is necessary. In the patients who seek for surgical cure, adrenal vein sampling is key for the identification of unilateral PA and the achievement of optimal outcomes. Unfortunately, being technically demanding and poorly available, adrenal vein sampling represents the bottleneck in the workup of PA. Considering the novel knowledge generated in the past 5 years in many studies, particularly in the AVIS-2 study (Adrenal Vein Sampling International Study-2), based on 4 decades of experience at our center and on the last guidelines, we herein provide an update on the management of PA with recommendations for drug treatment and strategies to avoid adrenal vein sampling wherever it is poorly, or not, available.

Clinical guidelines for early hepatocellular carcinoma treatment options: a systematic review and bibliometric analysis.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains a major cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, with treatment options including radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and surgical resection. This study evaluates the evolving guidelines for these treatments to identify the current consensus and divergences. We conducted a systematic review following PRISMA 2020 guidelines of documents from 2017-2024 by major liver societies. The AGREE-II framework assessed guideline quality. This study is registered with PROSPERO (CRDXXXX). We analyzed 23 guidelines and noted significant shifts in treatment recommendations over recent updates. This analysis reveals an increasing endorsement of RFA for certain patient groups and sustained strong support for surgical resection based on robust evidence levels. All demonstrated high quality, with the 2023 Japan Guidelines receiving the highest AGREE-II score. A significant finding was the low level of stakeholder involvement in the development of guidelines. Shared decision-making endorses intention to follow through treatment or vaccination recommendations: a multi-method survey study among older adults

BackgroundPrevious studies have shown that shared decision-making (SDM) between a practitioner and a patient strengthens the ideal of treatment adherence. This study employed a multi-method approach to SDM in healthcare to reinforce the theoretical and methodological grounds of this argument. As the study design, self-reported survey items and experimental vignettes were combined in one electronic questionnaire. This technique aimed to analyze the effects of previous experiences and the current preferences regarding SDM on the intentions to follow-through with the medical recommendations.MethodUsing quantitative data collected from the members of the Finnish Pensioners’ Federation (N = 1610), this study focused on the important and growing population of older adults as healthcare consumers. Illustrated vignettes were used in the evaluation of expected adherence to both vaccination and the treatment of an illness, depending on the decision-making style varying among the repeated scenarios. In a within-subjects study design, each study subject acted as their own control.ResultsThe findings demonstrated that SDM correlates with expected adherence to a treatment and vaccination. Both the retrospective experiences and prospective aspirations of SDM in clinical encounters supported the patients’ expected adherence to vaccination and treatment while decreasing the probability of pseudo-compliance. The association between SDM and expected adherence was not affected by the perceived health of the respondents. However, the associations among the expected adherence and decision-making styles were found to differ between the treatment and vaccination scenarios.ConclusionsSDM enables expected treatment adherence among older adults. Thus, the multi-method study emphasizes the importance of SDM in various healthcare encounters. The findings further imply that SDM research benefits from questionnaires combining self-report methods and experimental study designs. Further cross-validation studies using various types of written and illustrated scenarios are encouraged.
