In vitro treatment of Newcastle disease virus with nitrous acid inactivated the virus exponentially and, at the same time, produced a variety of small-plaque-type mutants. Mixed infection of chick embryo monolayers with a number of the induced mutants in pairwise crosses yielded no recombinant wild-type plaques.
