Hard- and software of real time simulation tools of Electric Power System for adequate modeling power semiconductors in voltage source convertor based HVDC and FACTS

The motivation of the presented research is based on the needs for development of new methods and tools for adequate simulation of Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACTS) devices and High Voltage Direct Current Transmission (HVDC) system as part of real electric power systems (EPS). For that, a hybrid approach for advanced simulation of the FACTS and HVDC based on Voltage Source is proposed. The presented simulation results of the developed hybrid model of VSC confirm the achievement of the desired properties of the model and the effectiveness of the proposed solutions.

Methodology for evaluation of grid-tie connection of distributed energy resources - Case study with photovoltaic and energy storage

The availability of reliable energy sources for all people, especially electricity, indicates an imbalance in the living conditions of a society. Therefore, new systems must be implemented to couple energy storage and renewable energy generation for the grid reliability improvement and increase access to electricity. This paper proposes a methodology to establish a general index focused on the insertion of distributed photovoltaic generation and energy storage using batteries. This methodology was applied in the IEEE 14-bus electric power system with load variation from different energy providers for the period of one year. The simulation results allow of the best performance evaluation to add distributed photovoltaic generation and/or energy storage in a real electric power system in different buses. The proposed methodology will allow planners to at the same time visualize different aspects by means of a single index that includes technical, economic and environmental aspects.

Use of Superconducting Devices Operating Together to Ensure the Dynamic Stability of Electric Power System

Among the superconducting power devices developed to nowadays first of all should be mentioned superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) and superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL) since they have the best test results while operation in real electric power systems. This study is aimed to the development of superconducting magnetic systems of both these devices operating in power system together, what facilitates the solution of two tasks. The first one is to assure the dynamic stability of electric power network itself by the joint operation of SMES and SFCL. The second one is to provide an uninterrupted power supply together with the assurance of stable operation for power system with the synchronous load, e.g., for oil refineries, the main power consumers of which are parallel operating synchronous motors. Under fault event which disturbs the normal operation, we understand here the sudden short-circuit leading to the disconnection of the damaged power transmission line.

New comprehensive reliability assessment framework for power systems

Existing reliability assessment methods are not consistent, and the approaches used produce inefficiencies in resource allocation. In this paper, a comprehensive new probabilistic reliability assessment framework is proposed and new reliability assessment methods and approaches are developed. Novel approaches dealing with probabilistic voltage stability analysis, angle stability, power balance and integrated reliability planning for bulk power systems are also developed in this work. Seven performance states have been proposed to define the power system conditions. System issues and a Markov model defining these states are also presented. New probabilistic voltage and angle stability assessment approaches are developed, including new voltage stability measures ( Q-indices) based on machine and system reactive margins. Application consideration of the new reliability framework is also presented. All model developments were tested with a real electric power system of the western U.S.A.

Fast evaluation of dynamic changes of electric power systems frequency during primary control

The paper presents the development of a simple method for the fast and sufficiently accurate assessment of dynamic changes of power systems frequency during the time period of primary control. Also, this model gives corresponding values of the total mechanical power of synchronous generators, during the some period. The development of a proposed low-order system frequency response model is based on the main assumption of uniform movement of generators, which enables representation of the power system through an equivalent controlled synchronous machine. The characteristics of the developed method were determined on an example of a real electric power system and a comparison was made with the results of a stricter approach.
