Literature and the Video Essay

In this introduction, we set out the stakes and goals of the special issue. We aim, with the special issue, to investigate the possibilities of the video essay for the teaching of literature (defined broadly), bearing in mind the digital ecosystems dwelled in by our students, and the fact that a body of scholarship demonstrates the utility of reading literature for developing critical thinking and emotional literacy. We discuss the tradition of the video essay, especially as it has emerged from film and media studies in the form of videographic criticism — the audiovisual study of audiovisual and screen media —and then consider the potential of the video essay as pedagogical resource in the teaching of literature. In the final section, we introduce the individual contributions to the special issue.

Father Professor Jan Wal (1942–2023) became known as an expert and lecturer in pastoral theology and sociology of religion (e.g. UPJPII in Kraków), a clergyman open to the needs of the faithful, a teacher of young academics, but also a talented poet. The volumes of poems published by the Czuwajmy publishing house near Krakow in 2013–2014 are proof of the artist’s sensitivity and the power of his words. Although he had been reading literature all his life, it was only after the age of 70 that he decided to publish a kind of pentateuch, i.e. over 500 works constituting a guide to his spiritual development and dialogical conclusions. He collected them into volumes, each of which he carefully considered and arranged, also providing a Foreword, Afterword and Information. The collected poems are also an invitation to conversation and reflection among readers, who can look into the private world of a priest conducting a “dialogue understood analogically”, i.e. one in which attention is drawn not to the form, but to the content subordinated to it.

Studi Perbandingan Kehidupan Perempuan Transgender dalam Pasung Jiwa dan Anak Gembala yang Tertidur Panjang di Akhir Zaman

This research aims to compare the plot of the main character's journey to becoming a trans woman as her gender identity in the novel Pasung Jiwa by Okky Madasari and Anak Gembala Yang Tertidur Panjang di Akhir Zaman by A. Mustafa. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with a comparative literature study. The theory used is Judith Butler's concept of gender performativity. Reading and note-taking techniques and literature study were the data collection techniques in this research. Data analysis techniques use data reduction techniques, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research results obtained include in the novel Pasung Jiwa, the main character is said to be a trans woman because she is confined to pursuing her passion, namely singing dangdut, etc. The main character also experiences direct and indirect experiences of transphobia, as well as sexual violence, namely rape, etc. Meanwhile, in the novel Anak Gembala Yang Tertidur Panjang di Akhir Zaman, who insulted transvestite thugs, was under bad influence from his caretaker and idolized his beautiful mother.

Requirements for the Development of Educational Activities in Primary School, Pedagogical Conditions and Principles of Activities to Improve the Interests of Readers

The article discusses the requirements and pedagogical conditions for the formation of reading competence, motivation for the art of the work, awakening, development of reading interest of primary school students. In particular, it takes into account the fact that children will have different interests, different requirements; motivate children's interest in reading; help a child read books as a reader; distribute books among young readers; take into account the criteria and principles for selecting texts for reading; take into account the text, type of work and genre diversity; diversity of speech in texts for to use the ability to illustrate with the correct understanding of the text; the graphic and artistic quality of the recommended book for reading; the correspondence of the plot and compositional construction of the work to the age and perception of the child; adaptation of texts presented in the textbook to students of this class; the text notes that such requirements as compliance with the norm of word ratio should be taken into account. Guided by general didactic principles, it was noted that along with them there are a number of principles that should be taken into account in the activities of preparing and motivating the reader to read in the lessons of literary reading and highlighted the main points. In addition, it should be noted that there are principles of focusing attention when performing written works based on the work read, parallel reproduction of the work read with the mental activity of students with a special emphasis on the educational value of the work presented for reading. Each principle is illustrated by some examples that help the teacher's activities, regulates his activities in the field of educating the reader.

The Impact of Innovative Reading Comprehension Strategies on Reading Literacy of Slovak EFL Learners

The importance of reading skills is undeniable since this skill is regarded as one of the vital ones in both academic sphere and personal lives of learners. However, relevant research and practice reveals that learners’ reading comprehension is often at a low level, exhibiting a declining tendency as regards reading literary. This article, therefore, attempts to contribute towards what is already known in this area by exploring the effects of the selected innovative reading strategies and techniques on the development of reading literacy of Slovak EFL learners. A quasi-experiment was conducted, testing being the primary research method. The research sample was formed by altogether 24 ninth grade learners who were divided into the control and experimental groups. Although the calculated p-value (0.14), which compared the pre-test and post-test reading scores of learners in the experimental group that was taught by means of the selected reading strategies and techniques does not demonstrate a statistically significant difference, the achieved scores after the intervention can be regarded as promising and encouraging. This may be because only after one month intervention, participants’ literacy level increased by 9%, indicating that regularity of improving reading comprehension can possibly result in achieving higher level of reading literacy. Finally, it is also suggested that Teachers can better plan lessons which involve active reading, discussions, and critical thinking, thus developing overall reading skills of EFL learners.

1 Samuel 25:23–28 and Conflict Resolution in Nigeria: A Literary Reading

This study aims to explore the application of the biblical passage 1 Samuel 25:23–28 in addressing and resolving conflicts in Nigeria. The study identifies several key conflict resolution strategies from Abigail’s actions, including humility, strategic communication, proactive peacemaking, and the appeal to higher principles. These strategies are found to be relevant and potentially effective in addressing conflicts in Nigeria, particularly in contexts marked by ethnic, religious, and political tensions. Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, is a country rich in cultural diversity, natural resources, and economic potential. However, it has been beset by numerous conflicts over the years, ranging from ethnic and religious violence to political instability and resource-based disputes. The aphorism in I Samuel 25:23–28 is important in understanding the underlying causes and dynamics of these conflicts, and it is essential for developing effective resolution strategies. Data is gathered from biblical commentaries, theological texts, and scholarly articles. Emerged themes are: i) respect and humility; ii) taking responsibility and mediation; iii) acknowledging wrongdoing and deflecting blame; iv) appealing to higher principles; v) offering reparation and tangible solutions; and vi) seeking forgiveness and affirming positive outcomes. These strategies are found to be relevant and potentially effective in addressing conflicts in Nigeria, particularly in contexts marked by ethnic, religious, and political tensions. Abigail's approach, characterised by humility, tact, and moral persuasion, can serve as a model for contemporary peacemakers.

'Library' in the Language Consciousness of Modern Students: from a Book Depository to a Cultural and Educational Hub (Based on a Free Associative Experiment)

Objective. The purpose of the given paper is to record modern students’ perception and interpretation of the library phenomenon, build associative field of the considered stimulus word, and analyze it in details. Basic options for the traditional and updated contextual compatibility of the lexeme library as an educational center, modern enlightening and cultural hub were presented and described in the article. Methods. In order to achieve the stated goal free associative experiment was conducted. General scientific methods of observation, comparison, generalization, description and systematization, as well as linguistic methods of linguistic observation and description were also utilized. Results. The results illustrate expansion of the connecting possibilities of the lexeme library and the transformation in its perception by Ukrainian and foreign students. Conclusions. The study proves that the interpretation of the library phenomenon by modern students doesn’t contradict codified meaning of the lexeme under consideration. Library is associated with learning, reading literature, acquiring new knowledge, skills and abilities. At the same time, the concept of the library has been expanded to correlate it with a renewed space for studying, spending free time, holidays, organizing events, and communicating with acquaintances.

The purpose of this study is to determine the role of government in the development of the halal industry. This research approach collects data through literature studies, which involve reading literature from various sources including books, journals and reports using qualitative and deductive approaches. The findings in this study are that the government plays a very important role in the development of the halal industry. The strategies used in the development of the halal industry include strengthening the halal value chain, strengthening Islamic finance, strengthening the MSME sector, strengthening the digital economy, strengthening halal industry management, and strengthening halal product certification. In addition, there are five moves used by the government as the key to making Indonesia a global halal industry production base, including competitiveness (competitiveness), certification (certification), coordination (coordination), campaign (campaign), and cooperation (cooperation).

Investigating Students’ Needs Using the Comprehensive Approach to FL Literature Learning

This study is an attempt to investigate students’ needs from the Literary Reading Program at the Department of English, Faculty of Arts and Sciences (Suluq Campus). Although English literature is an established university course throughout the English departments of the Libyan universities, no systematic research has been conducted to examine students’ needs from English literature courses in the Libyan context to investigate their merits or shortcomings. Therefore, the rationale for conducting this study is that the literary reading program has been devised without taking into consideration students’ needs and perceptions. The study adopted the mixed-method approach to elicit students’ needs and perceptions using a questionnaire and an interview to gather qualitative and quantitative data for enriching the analysis. The questionnaire and the interview were designed according to the Comprehensive Approach to Foreign Language Literature Learning, through which students select the components that satisfy their needs. In addition, the course instructor was also interviewed to elicit his perceptions about the program. The study revealed that 40% of students expressed their need to apply the text approach in their literary reading program. The main contribution of this study is that it does not only present the findings of students’ needs, as most studies are concerned with the field of needs analysis; it also presents a literary reading program that could be put into practice by English Department policymakers.

Leitura literária em foco: mapeamento dos clubes de leitura no Brasil contemporâneo

Reading clubs have a notable influence on promoting the habit of literary reading in Brazil. This article presents results of a study that mapped Brazilian reading clubs, as part of the dissertation research entitled: "Reading clubs: proposal for an application for managing and sharing literary readings and encouraging reading," within the scope of the Postgraduate in Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer for Innovation (PROFNIT) from the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA). The central objective of this work consisted of identifying and compiling the main characteristics of active reading clubs until collecting data for mapping the aforementioned research. The study used a qualitative and descriptive approach, with a technical bibliographical research procedure, whose data collection used questionnaires on Google Forms aimed at reading club coordinators/mediators. Based on the results, the research reached a representative portion of the reality of reading clubs. Within the universe of 124 book clubs identified, a response rate of 43% was achieved, which corresponds to a substantial number of book clubs. The study emphasizes the relevance and cultural potential of reading clubs to encourage reading in Brazil.

Hello, stranger? How attraction trumps interaction in ‘new’ public space

Chance interaction among diverse strangers is a much-celebrated feature of urbanity. The rise in privately owned and managed public spaces, tending to displace people, activities and exchanges that may threaten business interests, has thus raised broad concerns. However, how such ‘new’, high-profile public spaces of the neoliberal or entrepreneurial city differ from ‘traditional’, everyday ones in terms of spontaneous encounters, is not well covered in the ever-growing public space research. Drawing on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in Oslo, Norway, this article explores the occurrence of peaceful chance interactions among strangers in ‘new’ public space. In the two examined urban squares, representing ‘traditional’ and ‘new’ public space, strangers interact on a regularised versus an episodic basis, reflecting major differences in ‘contact-supporting circumstances’. A close reading of the pertinent scholarly literature indicates that these findings have a broader significance. The article’s key contribution is the detailed documentation and conceptualisation of basic circumstances that distinguish a ‘new’ from an ordinary, everyday public space with regards to chance interactions. Herein, the study points to an important shift in urban governance and planning since the 1980s. A market-led notion of attractiveness in the physical and social environment takes centre stage in prestigious urban developments, at the expense of the disordered exchanges of everyday life.

Burnout and Professional Development: A Study of Lithuanian Physiotherapists

Background. Physiotherapists’ qualifications involve treatment, responsibility, and communication, putting them at risk of burnout. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of burnout in Lithuanian physiotherapists and its impact on their professional development. Methods. A total of 133 physiotherapists working both in the public and private sectors completed an anonymous survey between January and March 2024 through an online form linked to www.apklausa.lt. Burnout syndrome was measured using the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI). Socio-demographics and questions related to professional development were utilized. Results. Total CBI score was 54.92 (moderate burnout). The overall prevalence of physiotherapists reporting moderate burnout was 50.4% (n=67). Thirteen (9.8%) physiotherapists reported high levels and none had severe burnout. Respondents engaged in relevant scientific literature reading (50.8%) and felt confident in solving patients’ problems (64.4%), focused on enhancing general skills (45.5%), and strongly agreed that physiotherapy seminars contribute to knowledge improvement (51.9%). There was a negative correlation (r = -0.26, p < 0.05), indicating a significant inverse relationship between burnout and professional development. Conclusions. Lithuanian physiotherapists in our study group experience moderate level burnout syndrome. Despite this, they maintain a positive or neutral attitude towards professional development, actively engage in skill improvement activities, and effectively solve patients’ problems. Buddhist thought in Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s “Tozichun”

Ryunosuke Akutagawa is one of the representative writers of the “New Trend of Thought” in the Taisho literary circle. He shows humanity from multiple angles and aspects with a rational attitude, which makes the “New Trend of Thought” become one of the important literary schools and makes the Japanese literary circle full of vitality again. In addition, Akutagawa Ryunosuke’s works are deeply influenced by Buddhist thought. Most of his historical novels are based on Chinese and Japanese classical novels with rich Buddhist elements, which are reprocessed and re-created with originality, presenting a brand-new theme idea, reflecting the profound influence of Buddhist thought on the author’s writing style. By studying the Buddhist thoughts in Ryunosuke’s Du Zichun, this paper probes into the Buddhist thoughts embodied in his role shaping, story development and theme connotation. Through text analysis and literature reading, this paper discusses the Buddhist theory of “love false”, impermanence and karma. Through the analysis of the works, the author’s role shaping and writing style will be deepened. In addition, the cultural background of the Taisho period and the integration of eastern and Western thoughts and cultures will be discussed to deepen the understanding of Japanese literature and cultural changes during this period. At the same time, the application of Buddhist thoughts in literary works will provide a new perspective for the interdisciplinary study of literature and Buddhism.

Digital Storytelling and Young Adult Literature: A Methodological Combination for the Language Classroom

Digital Storytelling (DST) originated in the 1990s as a narrative technique highlighting ‘ordinary voices’ in order to contribute to the public media discourse. Soon it was picked up by education to capture the diverse lived realities of students. This paper presents a methodological development in the form of a combination of DST with extensive reading of Young Adult Literature in the English classroom. A scaffolded methodological approach is outlined where DST is used as a post‑reading activity which can be enhanced in any foreign language classroom.

The Affordances of Extensive Digital Social Reading for the EFL Classroom Analysis of the DigLit Book Club Project

Research has shown that extensive reading (ER) can promote students’ reading skills and motivation to read in an additional language. However, different pedagogical designs exist also including the use of technologies. In this article, we particularly look at the application of Digital Social Reading (DSR) to the extensive reading of Young Adult Literature (YAL) in English as a Foreign Language (FL). In our study, EFL students from Italy and Hungary were engaged in pre‑, during‑, and post‑reading activities based on the preferred novel on two digital platforms, Moodle and Glose for Education. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected from the students and the facilitators participating in the project to investigate their perceived affordances and challenges of extensive DSR and mobile digital reading. Results show that DSR can lead to positive gains in terms of motivation to read, comprehension, and deep reading. Furthermore, the study has revealed that mobile reading has both advantages and disadvantages that still need to be fully understood. Hence, pedagogical implications are drawn.

Speaking with the Dead: Resurrective Reading and Pneumatological Imagination in George MacDonald

abstract: This essay examines George MacDonald's representation of reading as a conversation with the dead. It argues that MacDonald's notion of resurrective reading is both a subversion of Spiritualist discourse, and an invitation to practice an attentive mode of reading that, while critically engaged, remains open to the unfamiliar and unpredictable. By analyzing MacDonald's model of resurrective reading with particular reference to Phantastes (1858), David Elginbrod (1863), and Donal Grant (1883), this essay reveals the spiritual potential that Victorians like MacDonald associated with the act of reading. It thus demonstrates how attending to the nuances of theology in twenty-first-century readings of Victorian literature provides a fuller understanding of the period's reading practices.

Rabelais in the Whig World: Religious Persecution, Forced Migration and the Politics of Literary Translation in Post-Revolutionary England

Abstract: The commentary that Pierre Antoine Le Motteux (1663-1718) added to the English translations of Rabelais that he issued in 1694, in which he interpreted the comic episodes of Gargantua and Pantagruel as "satirical allegories" on historical events and personalities in sixteenth-century France, has been mocked by commentators from Alexander Pope to Mikhail Bakhtin as a narrow, philistine way to read literature. This article recovers the personal context of religious persecution and forced migration that shaped the approach to reading Rabelais of Motteux, a Huguenot refugee in post-Revolutionary London. It also recovers the public context in which Motteux's translation and commentary were composed and published, relating them to the principles espoused by leading Whig writers, publishers, and politicians. Finally, it is suggested that Motteux's approach to Rabelais as an allegory that can be deciphered with the correct historical "key" influenced notable instances in the eighteenth-century development of English comic fiction, including Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels (1726) and Laurence Sterne's A Political Romance (1759).

대학생 셀프리더십 강화를 위한 문학 독서 교육 방안 : 『데미안』, 『싯다르타』를 중심으로

Today’s college students are required to set self-directed goals and execute them, making self-leadership an essential competency. This study explores the potential of literature reading education in fostering this capability. To this end, the concept of self-leadership is examined, exploring its importance and meaning for college students. Hermann Hesse’s『Demian』and『Siddhartha』 were analyzed to discuss how the narratives in these two works are connected to the self-leadership that students need to develop. The protagonists in these two works by Hesse delve deeply into their inner worlds, discover their true selves, and proactively lead their lives. This journey can serve as a significant guide for students in cultivating selfmotivation and self-efficacy, ultimately growing into independent beings. Moreover, literature reading education goes beyond merely reading books or understanding content; it brings forth literature’s reflective value, applying it to life and providing opportunities to establish self-leadership through literary experiences.

The purpose of this study is to determine and analyze the role of the creative economy through MSMEs in realizing sustainable tourism. This research approach collects data through literature studies, which involve reading literature from various sources including books, journals and reports using qualitative and deductive approaches. The findings in this study are that the creative economy through MSMEs has a very important role in realizing sustainable tourism. There are several ways for the creative economy through MSMEs to realize sustainable tourism including the advancement of local culture, development of local products and services, innovation and collaboration, increasing local community participation, homestays and local investment, and environmental preservation.
