The Effectiveness of ROR in Reading Comprehension of Narrative Text

The objective of this research was to know the effectiveness of Rank Ordering Retell Strategy on reading comprehension of the eight grade students’ of SMP Advent Batam in academic year 2015/2016. The method was used in this research is experimental research, the research focused on True experimental Design. The population in this research was all students of eight grade students at SMP Advent Batam in academic year 2015/2016. The number of the entire students is 163. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to determine class of the research. The subject of the study was the grade VIII – 2 and VIII – 3. There were 32 students each class. The researcher conducted research in two classes. The first class (VIII – 2) was as experiment class and the second class (VIII – 3) as control class. The experiment class was taught reading narrative text using Rank Ordering Retell Strategy, while control class was taught reading narrative text using conventional strategy (lecture method). In analyzing the data, the researcher used a quantitative measurement to find the result. The analysis of the data showed that there was a significant difference of the students’ achievement before conducted treatment the average of the students’ was 62.34 for experimental class and 64.22 for control class. While the average of the students’ achievement after conducted treatment in experimental class was 79.38 and in control class was 68.75. Based on this finding, it can be concluded that the used of Rank Ordering Retell Strategy gave significant effect in reading comprehension than the use of conventional strategy (lecture method).Keywords: rank ordering retell strategy, reading comprehension, narrative text.

The Effect of Reducing Lexical and Syntactic Complexity of Texts on Reading Comprehension

The present study investigated the effect of different types of text simplification (i.e., reducing the lexical and syntactic complexity of texts) on reading comprehension of English as a Foreign Language learners (EFL). Sixty female intermediate EFL learners from three intact classes in Tabarestan Language Institute in Tehran participated in the study. The intact classes were assigned to three experimental groups. Moreover, to homogenize the groups, the researchers administered a general proficiency test (TOEFL, 2003) to the participants. The results revealed no significant difference among the groups in general proficiency and reading ability. Then four reading comprehension texts from TOEFL test (2005) were simplified through lexical simplification, syntactic simplification or lexical-syntactic simplification techniques. The simplified texts, along with their reading comprehension (RC) questions, formed the three versions of the post-test, each version contained either lexically, syntactically or lexical-syntactically simplified texts. Each group took one version of the post-test. The scores were analyzed through one-way ANOVA. The results revealed a significant difference among the groups. The post hoc test indicated that the lexical-syntactic simplification group significantly outperformed the lexical simplification group and performed considerably better than the syntactic simplification group. There was no significant difference between the lexical and syntactic simplification groups, although the latter showed better results.

Impact of text availability and question format on reading comprehension processes

We conducted two experiments to analyze how text availability and question format affect readers’ processes and performance on measures of expository text reading comprehension. Junior high school students read expository texts and answered both multiple choice and open-ended questions on a computer that recorded reading times and readers’ actions with Read&Answer software. The results showed that readers reread prior text segments during initial reading of the text more often when they knew that the text would be unavailable when answering questions than when they knew that the text would be available. In addition, readers made more search decisions in the text- available condition when answering open-ended questions than when answering multiple-choice questions. Regarding performance, we repeatedly found an interaction effect between availability and question format: text availability benefited the open-ended but not the multiple-choice format. We concluded that the two availability conditions are useful in assessing different discourse processes. We discuss theoretical and practical implications for the development of models of reading and new ways to assess reading literacy skills that emphasize purposeful reading.

Neural processing of lower- and upper-case text in second language learners of English: an fMRI study

ABSTRACTUpper-case text is considered detrimental to the reading comprehension of second language learners of English. Little is known about the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying the processing of upper-case text. To investigate this issue, Korean students (n = 23) performed 40 reading trials, and their reading comprehension of text written in either upper- or lower-case letters was recorded while their brain activities were scanned with functional magnetic resonance imaging. Compared to lower-case text, upper-case text elicited greater activation of the primary visual areas in both hemispheres associated with orthographic processing. In contrast, lower-case text increased neural activity in brain regions associated with higher-order reading comprehension processes (e.g. the integration of text information) and the premotor cortex. Collectively, based on automacity theory, these results suggested that upper-case text interferes with reading comprehension because it requires increased orthographic processing, which in turn leaves fewer neural resources for phonological processing and higher-order reading comprehension processes.

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF JIGSAW ON READING COMPREHENSION OF ANALYTICAL EXPOSITION TEXT

This paper investigates the effectiveness of Jigsaw on reading comprehension of analytical exposition text. The problems in this research are whether jigsaw has significant difference in reading comprehension of analytical exposition text between students who are taught by using jigsaw learning and those who are taught by using Grammar-Translation Method and how the participants in the experimental group response toward the jigsaw instruction after the treatment. The population of this research was the eleventh grade student of Senior High School in Tasikmalaya in the academic year 2016/2017 consisting of 48 students. The instruments, achievement test used to collect data were pre-test and post-test to experimental and control groups. They served to measure students’ reading comprehension of analytical exposition text by using jigsaw . The instrument, questionnaire was used to collect data about the participants’ response towards using jigsaw in comprehending analytical exposition text. From the research, it could be obtained the t-observed value was 2.410, whereas t-critical was 2.021.It means the alternative hypothesis is accepted and the nul hypothesis is rejected. It can be concluded that there is significant difference in reading comprehension of analytical exposition text between students who are taught by using jigsaw learning and those who are taught by using it. The Use of Porpe (Predict, Organize, Rehearse, Practice, Evaluate) Strategy in Teaching Reading Comprehension

This study aimed at examining the effectiveness of PORPE (predict, organize, rehearse, practice, evaluate) strategy in teaching reading comperhension.This research was designed as a pre-experimental research. The sample of this reserach was students of the tenth graders of Language 2 of MA Muallimin NW Pancor. In collecting the data, a pre-test and a post-test were given to students of the tenth graders of MA Muallimin NW Pancor in the school year 2015-2016. Descriptive statistic and paired simple t test were used to analyze the data by using SPSS 17.0 for windows. Based on the result of descriptive statistic, the mean score of post-test (20.59 ) was higher than pre-test (13.19). After submitting the data to a paired samples t-test, the present researcher found that there was a significant difference in the mean scores between the pre-test and the post-test, t (df=26) = 21.18 < p = 0.01, meaning that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. PORPE strategy is significantly effective in teaching reading comprehension of narrative texts for the tenth graders of MA Muallimin NW Pancor in the school year 2015-2016. Considering the process and the results of this research, the present researcher suggests that the English teacher should use PORPE strategy.

The role of phonological awareness in reading comprehension

ABSTRACT Purpose: to characterize the performance of 4th grade-Elementary School students with and without signs of reading and writing disorders as for phonological awareness and reading comprehension, and also verify possible correlations between them. Methods: 60 children enrolled in the 4th grade of Elementary School from two public schools, whose parents signed the Informed Consent Form, participated in the present study. They were selected and organized in groups, with and without signs of reading and writing disorders. All students were individually assessed regarding their phonological awareness and reading comprehension of sentences and texts through standardized tests. The data underwent statistical analysis. Results: those with signs of reading and writing disorders showed the lowest performance in the reading comprehension of sentences and texts. A correlation was found between phonological awareness and reading comprehension of sentences and texts in both groups. Conclusion: students with no signs of reading and writing disorders had a higher performance in the skills assessed. The correlation found between phonological awareness and reading comprehension of sentences and texts shows not only the importance of metaphonological skills for a proficient reading, but also for a comprehensive one.

QAR: Strategy implementation for reading comprehension of recount texts

The objective of this research is to find out whether QAR strategy is effective in reading comprehension of recount text. This research uses experimental research design. This research took place at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri Model Banda Aceh. A second grade class was chosen as the research sample, which consisted of 36 students. The research instrument used to gather the data was a set of essay tests, which were divided to pre-test and post-test. The result of the research was analyzed by using paired t-test formula. The calculation result shows that the observed t value is less than t lower critical vaue in the t distribution table (-5.624 2.030) at the 0.05 level of significance with 35 degree of freedom. It means that null hypothesis (H0) is rejected, which proves that Question Answer Relationship strategy effectively improves the second grade students’ reading comprehension of recount text.

THE USE OF LISTEN READ DISCUSS STRATEGY AND READING MOTIVATION TOWARD THE STUDENTS' READING COMPREHENSION

In teaching reading, teaching strategy and reading motivation influences students’ reading comprehension. Strategy which was used in this quasi experimental research is Listen Read Discuss. It can be used as a variation of teaching strategy in teaching reading comprehension of descriptive text. The purpose of this research was to find out the effect of using Listen Read Discuss and students’ reading motivation on students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text. This research was an experimental research with factorial design two by two. It was conducted at SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru. Population of this research was second grade students with the total population was 137. The sample was taken by cluster random sampling; the total number of sample was 52 (26 students in II.1 class and 26 students in II.2 class). The results of this research are, first, the students who were taught by using Listen Read Discuss had better result on reading comprehension of descriptive text than the students who were taught by using small group discussion. Second, the students with higher reading motivation who were taught by Listen Read Discuss had better reading comprehension of descriptive text than those who are taught by using small group discussion. Third, students with lower reading motivation who are taught by Listen Read Discuss had better reading comprehension of descriptive text than those who are taught by using small group discussion. Fourth, there was no interaction between both techniques and students’ reading motivation on students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text. In conclusion, Listen Read Discuss can be used as a teaching strategy in teaching reading comprehension of descriptive text at SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru. For further researcher, they are suggested to do more research dealing with this strategy on other skills and others kinds of text.

Developing Cooperative Learning Based Module for Teaching Reading to the Second Semester Students at English Department of FKIP UIR

This research is designed to develop the students’ reading comprehension of narrative, descriptive and hortatory exposition texts by using cooperative learning based-module. It aims to explainthe current needs, to design and toexamine the validity and practicality of cooperative learning based-module in developing reading comprehension at the second-semester Students in English Department of FKIP – UIR. The design of this research is R & D approach by using ADDIE model. The sample was selected from second semester students at English Department of FKIP UIR. Five validators involved in evaluating the product to evaluate its the validity, and the practicality. The quantitative data were collected through a questionnaire and test and qualitative data were collected through an interview. To develop the learning material to be givento students, the researcher tried to find out the need analysis, the validity, and the practicality of her product in designing and implementing readingin cooperative learning based-module. Based on the research finding of this research was considered valid and practice and it can be used to develop the quality of students in reading comprehension.

Effect of Inclusion Versus Segregation on Reading Comprehension of EFL Learners with Dyslexia: Case of Lebanon

This study reports the relative effectiveness of the inclusion theory when the combined strategy instruction on improving the reading comprehension of narrative and expository texts for students with dyslexia is implemented. A total sample of 298 students of English as a foreign language from both public and private schools participated in the study which employed a pre-test- post-test control group design to investigate the efficacy of combined strategy instruction consisting of Graphic organizers, Visual displays, Mnemonic illustrations, Computer exercises, Prediction, Inference, Text structure awareness, Main idea identification, Summarization, and Questioning. The study concluded that combined strategy instruction in the field of the inclusion theory is more effective than regular instruction in improving reading comprehension when using narrative texts, but there’s no difference, when using expository texts. There was no significant difference neither by gender nor by school types in all the grade levels under study.

Improving Students’ Reading Comprehension of Descriptive Text through Cognitive Strategy

This research aimed to explain the extent to which cognitive strategy can improve the students’ reading comprehension and what factors that influence the changes of the students’ reading ability by implementing cognitive strategy. This research was a classroom action research which consists of two cycles and four meetings of each cycle. Three meetings for teaching reading comprehension of descriptive text by using cognitive strategy and another meeting for reading comprehension of descriptive text test. The research was conducted from April, 30 2013 up to May, 30 2013. The instrument used to collect the data were reading comprehension of descriptive text test, observation sheets, field notes, and interview which were helped by a collaborator. The finding revealed that the implementation of cognitive strategy could better improve students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text at grade VII-2 of SMPN 1 Indra Praja Tembilahan. The improvement was confirmed by the increasing average students’ score, the average score of students in cycle I was 70,72 and in cycle II was 78,10. The factors that influence the students’ reading comprehension during the application of cognitive strategy were the materials, the students’ reading motivation, and the teacher’s role to students. Finally, the classroom action research by using cognitive strategy could improve the students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text at grade VII-2 SMPN 1 Indra Praja Tembilahan.

The relation between text reading fluency and reading comprehension for students with autism spectrum disorders

Deficits in reading comprehension have been well documented in individuals with autism. Researchers have begun to identify predictors of reading comprehension; we sought to add to this knowledge base by investigating the role of text reading fluency in the prediction of reading comprehension in a sample of individuals with higher functioning autism (HFASD). A comprehensive reading battery was administered to students with HFASD (N=68) and age- matched typically developing (TD) students (N=38). Significant differences were detected between the HFASD and TD samples on every reading measure, favoring the TD sample. Structural Equation Models with the HFASD indicates that text reading fluency significantly predicts reading comprehension above and beyond the contribution of other reading variables which have been shown to be significant predictors in previous studies. This finding has important implications for the treatment of reading deficits in individuals with HFASD.

A Critical Discourse Analysis of Donald Trump’s Language Use in US Presidential Campaign, 2016

The present study reports on the latest and newest hot topic in the world, the United States Presidential Election. So, this is the newest attempt to explore and discover interrelation of discourse structures and ideological structures of Donald Trump’s acceptance speech in the United States Presidential Election, 2016 as a good sample of his language use in presidential campaign. In so doing, the current study utilizes Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model to unmask the use of power and hidden strategies through language use. Also we analyze and uncover the experiential, relational and expressive values of the wordings, metaphors and grammatical structures of Trump’s language use. Furthermore, this study tries to show that there are linguistic traces that depict the strategy and ideology in the text as well. The findings of the present study can be provocative for English foreign language learners to promote their analytical skills. Therefore, findings of the present article can be applied to English Reading Comprehension and Reading Journalistic Texts classes.

Regulación emocional y habilidades académicas: relación en niños de 9 a 11 años de edad

Academic skills are a specific component of academic success, and many factors influence their acquisition and consolidation. One of these factors is the ability to emotionally regulate distress tolerance, as defined by the ability to withstand negative emotional states in pursuit of a goal. This paper undertook to analyse the relationship between distress tolerance and reading comprehension and mathematical computations in 107 primary school children aged 9 to 11. The results showed that distress tolerance was a significant predictor of reading comprehension of expository texts and mathematical computations, albeit not so for reading comprehension of narrative texts. Distress tolerance is likely to be a relevant factor for academic success in several domains.

TEACHER BELIEFS ABOUT CRITICAL READING STRATEGIES IN ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES IN MEKONG DELTA INSTITUTIONS, VIETNAM

This paper reports a descriptive study which explored how teacher beliefs influence their decision-making in teaching critical reading strategies at three different institutions in the Mekong Delta. Using a descriptive mixed method, questionnaires and interviews were undertaken with English as foreign language (EFL) teachers. The findings of this study indicate that these participating teachers believed critical reading strategy instruction plays an important role in enhancing their students’ comprehension of reading texts. Findings also reveal that of the four factors influencing teachers’ decision-making of utilizing these skills, student-related factors were found to be highest. This propensity for involving students in critical reading strategies gives rise to some pedagogical implications for teachers while designing appropriate tasks and lesson plans. The Text Type Effect on Moroccan EFL University Learners’ Reading Achievement

This study is a potential endeavor to make an inquiry into the perceived effect of text typology on reading achievement gains among Moroccan English as a foreign language (EFL) learners. It also evinces whether strategy instruction can be an influencing variable on learners’ reading achievement with regards to text type (i.e., narrative, expository). Indeed, incorporating two primary text genres (i.e., narrative, expository) in the conduct of this current research, the study is intended to substantiate any marked interrelatedness existing between text typology and reading achievement at the pre- and post-testing stages among EFL university learners. For assuring a thorough, rich investigation of this stated postulate, two sampled Moroccan EFL groups (n=113), as first-year English majors, were addressed. The obtained data were collected by means of a corpus of research instruments such as reading comprehension tests (i.e., pre-test, post-test), strategy training and reading comprehension texts (i.e., narrative, expository). The findings showcased that text genre is not a significant, influential variable on reading achievement scores among the control (n=50) and treatment groups (n=63). Finally, the study puts forward some useful implications pertaining to EFL text processing/ analysis and an explicit mention of some limitations, which encountered the undertaken study, is made.

Reading Strategies for the Science Subject in Upper Elementary Classes that Follow English CBI in Northern Lebanon

This article investigates instructional strategies that scaffold students’ reading comprehension of science texts in Content-Based language Instruction (CBI) settings; especially, the reading strategies that enhance comprehension of content, language and cognitive Science Process Skills (SPSs). The subjects are upper-elementary science classes in five private and public schools that follow English CBI in Northern Lebanon. We implemented observation and causal-comparative studies that use both students’ means of scores on reading assessment tests, and statistical tests of significance, to measure the effectiveness of the applied reading strategies. Results indicate that the student sample groups that used general classroom reading strategies, such as question/answer relationships and context-clue analysis, during and/or after teachers’ explanation of the lesson, have insignificant differences among means of their test scores. The student sample groups that used these strategies before the lesson’s explanation scored significantly lower averages than those that used them during and/or after. Other reading strategies, such as home reading, produced insignificant differences. The cognitive model of L2/FL acquisition and the cognitive academic language learning approach (CALLA) are used to substantiate these results.

Fostering EFL Learners’ Reading Comprehension: Animation Film Technique

The current study investigated the effect of implementing animation films on developing reading comprehension texts among EFL learners of a language institute in Kerman. For this purpose, two groups of pre-intermediate EFL learners were chosen (30 participants in each group). After three months of instruction, twice a week, 2story books named the "Good Dinosaur" and "Little Prince" including totally 20 chapters in both groups and animation films including 60 minutes divided into 6 to 7 minutes in each session in experimental group were presented. To estimate the primary knowledge of the subjects, a pretest was taken from both groups and after the experiment came to an end, a posttest was followed. The result revealed that a meaningful relationship could be identified between the procedures incorporated for both groups. However, the experimental group achieved higher degree of achievement using animation films presented to them by scoring higher in the total mean and also, interview participants were satisfied with the use of animation films in the reading class.
