Analyzing Asymmetric Prosody in Salim's Poetry: A Critical Examination of Words, Phrases, Poetic Lines and Punctuations

In this research, titled "Analyzing Asymmetric Prosody in Salim's Poetry: A Critical Examination of words, phrases, poetic lines and punctuations," we conduct a comprehensive and practical analysis to identify errors and asymmetric rhythmic prosody within Salim's poetry, focusing on the edition we have diligently worked on. Our study aims to explore potential solutions in accordance with established prosody criteria. Salim's body of work encompasses several books of poetry, with our research specifically delving into the most recent edition published in 2015 in Sulaimani by Mullah Abdulkarim Mudaris, Fatih Abdulkarim, and Mohammed Mullah Karim. We selected this edition due to its freshness and its incorporation of improvements from previous editions, making it a widely embraced reference among both writers and readers of Salim's poetry. Our research comprises four primary themes. Firstly, we analyze disruptions at the level of words and phrases. Secondly, we investigate instances of rhythmic disruptions resulting at the level of poetic hemistich. Thirdly, we explore disruptions caused at the level of poetic lines. Lastly, we analyze disruptions at the level of punctuations. In conclusion, our study offers valuable insights into the content of Salim's poetry by shedding light on its prosodic nuances and providing potential remedies for asymmetries.

Communicating in Verse: How Reading Poetry Can Expand How We Care for Patients.

It is a foundational principle of medical humanities that the appreciation of literature and other humanities enrich and expand medical training. But what are the mechanisms by which this happens? As a faculty member and former medical student, who met during an interdisciplinary and multi-institutional 5-session poetry seminar, we reflect on how poetry enriches our own experiences working with patients, as well as how we care for patients. Reading poetry in medicine has the potential to enhance observational skills, model an appreciation of uncertainties, and generate joy. Similar to our seminar, other institutions may also consider incorporating poetry into curricula.

“The wrong side of the desk”: Material and Discursive Struggle in Bud Osborn’s Downtown Eastside

Abstract Bud Osborn (1947-2014) was an American poet and activist who arrived in Vancouver, Canada in 1986. He landed in Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood, the Downtown Eastside (DTES), while struggling with heroin addiction. The DTES is a complex and politically active neighbourhood and site of intersecting social crises. Osborn would spend the remainder of his life capturing this community in his poetry, which is often understood solely through activism for harm reduction and against gentrification. In this article, I engage with his poetry to understand the politics which motivate his activism. This exploration will include a variety of textual mediums, voices, and analytic perspectives to capture the complex politics contained in his words. I believe that by reading his words we can examine his complicated self-positionality as a PWUD (people who use drugs) and a member of the lumpenproletariat who occupied sociocultural spaces that often excluded those from his social standing. This examination shows how he constitutes the DTES as a space of material and discursive struggle. What emerges from this examination is how his poetic resistance at the level of the signifier intertwines with his street-level resistance. That is, how the act of writing and reading poetry can be an act of defiance.

Renewal of Modern Arabic Poetry: The Culture-Creativity Controversy

The present research raises critical issues regarding modern Arabic poetry, wondering about the limits of creativity starting from awareness about poetry writing to its reading prospects. It observes how the Arab poet is torn between focusing on the depth of culture (with what it imposes in terms of conforming to the prevailing poetic model) and between the temptations of creativity, which requires a level audacity and aspiration to different and renewed written models. The research disassembles the structure of poetry as a cultural system rooted in the Arab memory and discusses the question of identity in its relationship to creativity. It stresses the centrality of the traditional Arab poetic model while pointing to attempts at transcending such model. The most prominent of these attempts was that accomplished by the Arab poetic modernity movement in the forties and fifties of the last century (free poetry and prose poem). The research explores the rationale behind this decisive shift in the history of Arabic poetry at the levels of its creative and cultural foundations. In this regard, the research raised the question of leadership, the call for renewal, and defense of the pioneering poets of their innovative achievement against the successive creative booms. The research also discussed the controversy over tradition versus creativity, the question of dialogue in texts, the prospects for critical poetry reading with its scientific and cultural transformations, and the distribution of its theoretical and methodological references between Arab heritage and Western culture.

A Promising Amalgamation

First-year law students often struggle with the transition from writing as an undergraduate to writing as a lawyer. Incorporating poetry into the first-year legal writing curriculum may assist students in making that transition. The close, active reading poetry requires is a strong scaffold to the critical reading lawyers must undertake. In addition, poetry aptly models how language can create an emotional impact, which is akin to how effective lawyers use language to tell a compelling story on their client's behalf. This Assignment has students read and analyze Gwendolyn Brooks's poem “Boy Breaking Glass,” and then imagine the protagonist of the poem was being criminally prosecuted for his act of vandalism and write the story of the case from both the defense side and the prosecution side. The Assignment enables students to appreciate how a text (or a set of facts giving rise to a legal dispute) can give rise to varied interpretations, and how language and storytelling techniques can be used persuasively.

A poetics of “Wind in a Box”

Abstract This essay is a re-application of the language codes of Roland Barthes and Jonathan Culler’s concept for Structuralist Poetics. The approach I use explores the codes demonstrated in Barthes’ well-known text, S/Z with slight modifications for their application to poetry. The concepts borrowed from Mr. Culler are from his book of the same title: Structuralist Poetics: Structuralism, Linguistics and the Study of Literature (Cornell University Press, 1975). Culler’s main argument is that there must be other, un-attempted strategies combined with conventional approaches in literature of that time period. His answer to this problem was to develop a set of linguistic-based concepts to compensate for the reader in the analysis of literary works. I have applied in this essay my approach based on Culler’s methodology and the language codes of Roland Barthes: semantic, symbolic, cultural-referential, actional and hermeneutic. I apply Culler’s concepts to a reading of poetry followed by an application of the language codes as a further development of my work in revitalizing this never-before applied method.

‘I Am Not A Melodramatic Person’: Defining the Lyric Diary

ABSTRACT For the past few years, I’ve been seeking out books that frustrate many readers—and sometimes myself among them. They are frequently described as sketchy, short, fragmented, diaristic—when the reader is being kind—and lazy, boring, or pointless when she is not. The official category (on the back of the book, right above the ISBN) sometimes reads Poetry, sometimes Novel, sometimes Memoir, sometimes Essay—or, sometimes Essay/Poetry or Essay/Literature. Some of the more famous examples include Sarah Manguso’s Ongoingness, Maggie Nelson’s Bluets, Claudia Rankine’s Don’t Let Me Be Lonely. In this essay, I will propose and define a new genre in contemporary literature: the lyric diary—a slender volume in which a depressed, middle-age, female first-person narrator records the mundane experiences of her everyday life alongside facts, ideas, and quotations in flat, affectless ‘shreds’ of prose. Blending elements of the confessional poem with the diary and other non-literary modes of historical women’s writing, the lyric diary rejects plot and the narrative arc for the lyric’s associative logic and the diary’s serial, episodic movement. The lyric diarist does not narrate: she records. It is all that she, exhausted from working the double shift, can manage to do.

Tradisi Ubeng Dusun Masyarakat Jawa di Dusun Slatri Kecamatan Kasembon Kabupaten Malang

Slatri Hamlet is a place where the community is all Muslim, because it is a place that is based on the Islamic religion, it cannot be denied that the activities carried out are based on religious activities that contain elements and even the reading of verses from the holy Koran. Ubeng dusun is the core procession in this tradition where residents who take part in ubeng are not allowed to speak at all because they have to read the recommended reading. Previously, Slatri hamlet was a place full of swamps. Because the meaning of the name Slatri itself is rowo sing garing (dry swamp). However, it is not known for certain what the relationship is between the ubeng dusun tradition and the origins of the slatri hamlet which originates from the swamp. However, because of the tradition that has existed for a long time and every year it is carried out precisely in the month of Suro. So until now this tradition has always been carried out because it was ordered by elders and predecessors. This research aims to find out the procession and symbolic meaning of the ubeng village procession carried out by the people of Slatri hamlet. Meanwhile, research data was obtained from interviews with current religious leaders, village heads, and several residents who knew about the ubeng village tradition. So that from the research results obtained, researchers can analyze using descriptive qualitative research methods.

Becoming Lyrical: Poems That Depict Our Reflective Journeys In Online Teaching

Online and blended learning over the years have brought great challenges and opportunities. At the beginning of this project, we asked: How do educators reflect on teaching online in particular? And how do we articulate our reflections in creative ways? With these questions in mind, the authors took on the challenge of the artistic expression of writing and reading poetry to reflect critically and creatively on our experiences of teaching online in higher education. By drawing connections between theory and our poetry we provide insight into our lessons learned from teaching online. We conclude with encouragement to use creative writing to foster a collective and reflective environment in higher education and for personal awareness and growth.

Environmental Case Method in Learning Poetry of Students at Senior High School: An Ethnoecological Literature Study

Literature and poetry play a crucial role in education by fostering students' sensitivity and reasoning towards literary works. This study aims to explore and describe practical approaches for teaching poetry using the environmental case method to students at SMA Negeri 1 Palu. This is a qualitative study, with data collected from class XI students during the 2022/2023 academic year through discussions and activities involving the case method. The descriptive qualitative method was employed to address two primary challenges: (1) students' difficulty in writing poetry and (2) students' difficulty in reading poetry. The findings reveal practical strategies to overcome these challenges by integrating environmental cases into the case method model. Specifically, this method helps students improve their poetry writing and reading skills by contextualizing poetry within real-world environmental issues. The implications of this research suggest that employing the environmental case method can enhance poetry teaching strategies broadly, making poetry more accessible and engaging for students. By applying this method, students can develop their poetry writing and reading abilities, thereby enriching their overall literary experience and appreciation.

Analisis Semantik Dalam Puisi “Hujan Bulan Juni” Karya Sapardi Djoko Damono

Poetry is the recording and interpretation of important human experiences transformed into a memorable and interesting form. Poetry is one type of literary work that is of interest to various groups and age groups. Not only reading poetry, some people are also interested in creating poetry. Linguistically, poetry is mostly free, not bound by specific rules. The use of figurative language sometimes makes it difficult to understand the meaning of beautiful words in poetry. The poem June Rainfall by Sapardi Djoko Damono is the subject of this research. The problem raised by the author is only limited to the meaning of words in this poem. The purpose of this research is to describe the meaning contained in the poem June Rainfall through semantic analysis, which focuses on analyzing lexical meaning, grammatical meaning, referential meaning, and figurative meaning. Qualitative descriptive method is used as the research method. The techniques used in this research include documentation techniques, library techniques, and note-taking techniques. The results of the discussion show that this poem can be analyzed through semantic studies.

From Walking to the Wheel: Surrealism and the Serial Poem

Abstract: In his opening letters to the long-dead Federico García Lorca, Jack Spicer introduced his ideas of tradition, objects, and words. The following essay will explore these concepts in Spicer's poetry and poetics, tracing a tradition that runs through Guillaume Apollinaire, André Breton, and Spicer, for it is in relationship with Breton's surrealist object that the tradition which infuses Spicer's serial object can be further discerned. From there, the article will conclude with a reading of Spicer's poetry in light of one of his contemporaries who believed himself an inheritor of surrealist practice, Allen Ginsberg.

Exploring funds of knowledge at a community-based Chinese heritage language school in a Southwestern U.S. City

ABSTRACT While previous studies have shown that drawing upon funds of knowledge benefits teaching and learning in many educational settings, there is little inquiry into funds of knowledge in Chinese heritage language education. Employing ethnographic methods, I explored the evidence of funds of knowledge in early childhood settings in a community-based Chinese heritage language school. The data sources included weekly observations, video recordings of class conversations, artifacts provided by the participants, and informal conversations. The findings present examples illustrating three kinds of funds of knowledge: families’ daily life experiences, poetry reading practices, and cultural knowledge of folktales. The findings also show that the teachers drew upon the funds of knowledge to engage young heritage learners in joyful pedagogical activities and language learning. The implications include the need to value and use funds of knowledge in Chinese heritage language education and include Chinese language teachers’ experiences and funds of knowledge in teacher preparation programmes.

Reading Choi Seung-ja’s Poetry as University Liberal Arts Education: Focusing on the Case of University’s 〈Reading poetry〉

This paper studies the case of teaching Korean poetry texts when conducting masterful reading and reading classes in university liberal arts education. It would be near impossible to present an ideal and complete list when creating a reading list for such a course. However, in this paper, it is suggested that Choi Seung-ja's poetry should be placed on any list that deals with those times in life when life itself is neglected, as well as used in liberal arts education classes at universities. In our current age, which is seeing an increase in depression among young people, this paper argues that the theme of death as seen in Choi Seung-ja's poem can actually give hope to its readers, and instill in them a level of resistance to death that will manifest as a will to life.&lt;/br&gt;In Choi Seung-ja's poem, death is a tragedy given to us humans, but it tells us how to deal with this tragedy so that we can overcome death. The attitude of the poetic persona is repeated and circulated and strengthened, and readers can adopt the courage needed to stand up to death by reading about the attitude of the poetic persona. In this paper, the significance of character education and poetry reading by learners living in an environment of death after COVID-19, can be confirmed in Choi Seung-ja's poetry learning. Learners find a way to overcome death in a finite life where death is a certainty. This process was confirmed in the ‘Writing Poetry Review’, which was written during the process of learning Choi Seung-ja's poetry. Thus, this paper revealed that Choi Seung-ja's poetry can function as a very efficient text in poetry education.
