Reversibility of homolytic aromatic substitution: the reaction of p-xylene with phenyl radicals

The increase in the ratio of 4,4′-dimethylbibenzyl to 2,5-dimethylbiphenyl formed in the reaction of phenyl radicals with p-xylene with increasing temperature is interpreted as indicating that the formation of 1-phenyl-2,5-dimethylcyclohexadienyl radicals (1) is reversible.

Application of chemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization to a kinetic study of phenyl radical reactions

The CIDNP enhancement coefficient of a stable product RX formed in a free radical reaction depends on nuclear relaxation in the paramagnetic precursor R' and decreases with an increase of its lifetime, τ R. This dependence was used for evaluation of the lifetime of phenyl radicals generated by thermolysis of N-nitrosoacetanilide (NAA). The value τ pb in CCl 4 solution at 60° was found to be 6.9 × 10 −5 sec which corresponds to a rate constant k = 1.4 × 10 3 8 mole −1 sec −1 for the reaction Ph + CCl 4 → PhCl + CCl 3 of which the activation energy equals 8.2 kcal mole −1. During the thermolysis of NAA CIDNP arises in a geminate radical pair (PhN 2 ON 2Ph) S from which it is transferred to aromatic products through PhNN' and the product of its destruction, Ph' radical. Comparison of the experimental CIDNP enhancement coefficient of the protons in PhNN' radical just leaving the radical pair, with those calculated for different lifetimes of the intermediate gives its mean lifetime τPhN 2 = 10 −7 sec.

S′ H type reactions of substituted allylic compounds

S′ H reactions of allyl sulfides and halides with phenyl radicals are reported. Thermal decomposition of phenylazotriphenylmethane with allyl sulfides and bromide has been shown to give allylbenzene. This apparent substitution reaction involves attack of a phenyl radical on the terminal unsaturated carbon atom of the allyl sulfide; the reaction in α,α-dimethylallyl ethyl sulfide produced 2-methyl-4-phenylbutene-2. To estimate the relative reactivities of allylic substrates towards phenyl radicals, competitive reactions of phenyl radicals with allylic compounds and carbon tetrachloride were investigated. The data indicate that the radical formed by addition of a phenyl radical to the allylic sulfide looses thiyl radicals almost quantitatively.

Cooligomerization of Sulfur Dioxide with Octene-1

The benzoyl peroxide initiated cooligomerization of sulfur dioxide with octene-1 in the presence of bromotrichloromethane was investigated. Alternating copolymers and oligomers having 1:1 composition with respect to sulfur dioxide and octene-1 were isolated from the reaction mixture. The oligomers were fractionated by thin-layer chromatography and the molecular weight, IR spectra and end group analyses of the fractions determined. It was found that the structure of the oligomers was mainly C6H5–(–SO2–octene–1–)n–Br. The oligomer seems to be formed by the reaction of phenyl radicals (originated from a fragment of benzoyl peroxide) and a monomer complex of sulfur dioxide and octene-1, not by the alternate addition of sulfur dioxide to the octene-1 radical or of octene-1 to the sulfur dioxide radical.

Phenyl radicals, generated by the photolysis of diphenylmercury, react with anthracene at the meso-positions to give 9-phenylanthracene, 9,10-dihydro-9-phenylanthracene, 9,10-diphenylanthracene, and 9,10-dihydro-9,10-diphenylathracene.

Abstract Alkyl radicals are generated by reactions of phenyl radicals in binary mixtures of substituted alkanes. CIDNP-NMR spectra of their reaction products are explained by S - T0-transitions in radical pairs formed in free radical encounters. From comparisons of calculated and observed CIDNP spectra the (g-factor and the proton hyperfine coupling constant of · CHCl2 are determined [g = 2.0080 ± 0.0003, a = (- 17.0 ± 1.0) G]. The inclusion of nuclear relaxation in free radicals in quantitative CIDNP treatments is discussed, and evidence for the radical pair mechanism causing CIDNP of phenyl derivatives during dibenzoylperoxide decompositions is presented.

Reactivities of monomers towards the phenyl radical; a scale of phenyl affinities

Relative rate constants are reported for the addition of phenyl radicals, generated from phenylazotriphenylmethane (PAT), to a series of vinyl monomers. The technique involves the study of mixtures of monomers with heptanethiol-t. The phenyl radicals partition between addition to the monomer and reaction with the thiol to form tritiated benzene. We have measured the amount of benzene formed for the standard conditions 4.16 × 10–3 M PAT and 1.20 × 103 sec as a function of the [monomer]/[thiol] mole ratio. These data allow calculation of relative values of the rate constant ka for addition of phenyl radicals to the olefins. We have also measured the kinetic isotope effect, kH/kT, for the reaction of phenyl radicals with the thiol. Our data show that the phenyl radical is 0.6 times as selective as is the methyl radical and is only 0.4 times as selective as is the polystyryl radical in additions to these olefins. We discuss this in relation to the bond strengths of the R—H bonds for these R radicals. The reactivity pattern phenyl > methyl > polystyryl also agrees with the pattern of kinetic isotope effects for the reaction of these radicals with tritiated thiols.
