The mechanism of the reaction between H and CH 3NO 2, has been studied in a discharge flow system using electron paramagnetic resonance and modulated molecular beam mass spectrometry for the detection of reactants and products. Deuterium atoms have, in addition to CD 3NO 2, been used to support the proposed reaction mechanism. The reaction was studied with the atomic reactant in slight excess at 298 K and a total pressure of 2 Torr. Two concurrent reaction channels: (1a) H+CH 3NO 2→HONO+ CH 3 and (1b) H+CH 3NO 2→CH 3NO+ OH were observed. The branching ratio, k 1a/( k 1a+ k 1b), is 0.7±0.2.

Effect of cyclohexene on the mechanism of the chlorine evolution reaction in nitromethane

The effect of cyclohexene on the chloride ion oxidation process on a Pt electrode in nitromethane solution was studied by the convolution potential-sweep voltammetric method. The change in the rate of Cl − ion oxidation was interpreted in terms of a reaction between chlorine and the olefin in the adsorbed state.

Application of the convolution potential sweep voltammetric method to the chlorine evolution reaction in nitromethane

The convolution potential sweep voltammetric method was applied to the chlorine evolution reaction on a Pt electrode in nitromethane solution. In agreement with the results of galvanostatic measurements, the process can be described according to a recombination mechanism of the adsorbed Cl ∓ atoms. In a smaller range of overpotential, Langmuir-type adsorption is valid, while consideration of lateral interaction extended the validity of the equations to a larger range of overpotential.

Decomposition of Nitromethane over NiO and Cr2O3Catalysts

Abstract The reaction of nitromethane over NiO/alumina and Cr2O3/alumina catalysts was examined to determine the feasibility of developing a nitromethane based monopropellant system. The kinetics of nitromethane decomposition over those two catalysts were found to be adequately represented by Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetics over the conditions T= 100-300°C, P= 1-60 torr. Nitromethane decomposition caused catalyst deactivation by carbon deposition due to the fuel rich nature of nitromethane. It is suggested that nitromethane be mixed with an oxidant rich material to eliminate the problem of carbon deposition to develop a functional monopropellant system.

Gas phase oxidation of nitromethane

The reaction of nitromethane with oxygen has been studied in the temperature range (700 to 740°K) in a static vessel using both g.p.c. techniques associated with an original sampling procedure [11] and spectroscopic measurements. The explosion limit, markedly lowered when compared with the case of nitromethane alone, is determined as a function of temperature or of O 2 concentration. Accurate atomic balances permit the use of the experimental results to derive a simplified mechanism from a “possible mechanism” comprising 121 steps. The simulation of the “simplified mechanism” gives results that are seen to match the data well not only for the oxidation of CH 3NO 2 but also for its pyrolysis and nitration provided that a new way of formation of HCN is introduced. The simulations allow an estimation of the order of magnitude of several rate constants, the values of which are not precisely known. For example, the rate constant of the reaction CH 3NO 2 + OH → CH 2NO 2 + H 2O may be about 2.4 sx 10 11 to 3.0 × 10 11 cm 3 mol −1 s −1 in the temperature range 700 to 740°K.

Friedel-Crafts Reaction of Anisole with 2-t-Butyloxirane

Abstract The title reaction in excess anisole gave a mixture composed of 3-(methoxyphenyl)-2,3-dimethyl-1-butanols (2) (a mixture of ortho and para isomers), 2-p-methoxyphenyl)-2-methybutane (3), and oligomer of 2-t-butyloxirane, while the same reaction in nitromethane gave a product composed of 2 (only the para isomer) and hexylanisoles, but not 3. The reaction sequences to give the products are discussed in terms of step-by-step and concerted alkylation mechanisms.

SOLVENT EFFECT ON THE BACKBONE REARRANGEMENT OF 3β,4β-EPOXYSHIONANE CATALYZED BY BORON TRIFLUORIDE ETHERATE

Abstract 3β,4β-Epoxyshionane (3) was treated with BF3–Et2O in ether to give D:B-friedo-bacchar-5-en-3β-ol (7), D:B-friedo-bacehar-5(10)-en-3β-ol (8), D:C-friedo-bacchar-7-en-3β-ol (9), and 4α-fluoroshionan-3β-ol (10), besides previously reported dihydrobaccharis oxide (1), while the reaction in the solvents such as nitromethane, benzene, toluene, hexane, and acetonitrile gave no 1. In the reaction in THF at room temperature, the D:B-friedo-type products (7 and 8) were formed predominantly. The rearrangement in solvents with low nucleophilicity proceeded up to C/D rings; e.g. the reaction in nitromethane at room temperature yielded bacchar-12-en-3β-ol (2) and D:C-friedo-bacchar-8-en-3β-ol (11). The reaction product ratio in the same reaction in various solvents are listed in TABLE.

An investigation of the shock initiation of liquid nitromethane

An experimental investigation of the shock initiation of liquid nitromethane is described. Shock pressures and temperatures in the unreacted liquid ranged from 7.5 to 9.5 GPa and 900 to 1100 °K. Diagnostic information was obtained from ferroelectric pins immersed in the liquid and from simultaneous streak camera and velocity interferometric records. The data support the thermal ignition model of one-dimensional shock initiation of nitromethane. The interferometer initiation time data are analyzed to obtain kinetic parameters in a first order overall rate law for the initiation-decomposition reaction in nitromethane. The rate constant for this overall reaction is suggested as k 1 = 2.6 × 10 9 exp(−23000/RT) sec −1, which is appreciably different from the rate constant for the unimolecular bond-scission reaction. The data support the conclusion that radical reactions significantly influence the overall initiation reaction in liquid nitromethane.
