We proved 27 cases of paragonimiasis during the past 8 months(from Dec. 1958 to Aug. 1959) in this institution. 26 cases were positive sputum for ovum, one had cerebral lesion. 25 complained cough, 23 had characteristic bloody pstum, 17 of the cases complained general weakness or anorexia but fever was the least complain(in7) compare to X-ray findings and clinical signs. Some other minor symptoms were seen such as weakness or pain of extremities, chest pain, lumbago, dyspnea. 7 cases complained neurological symptoms but 2 cases showed brain atrophy, One was found cerebral lesion on autopsy. 9 cases were normal in sedimentation rate, 14 have increased(60%). Hemoglobin was normal in 17. Serum protein was examined on 10 and increased in 5, and γ-globulin increased in 9. Leucocytosis was in 4, and eosinophilia was existing in all leucocytosis cases but it's not significant in entire series. Chest X-ray showed several characteristical patterns, predominantly whin walled cystic shadow bronchopneumonia type fibrosis patchy form and some other insignificant patterns. In pleural changes, there were 3 of pleuristy, 12 of pleural reaction, 3 of spontaneous hydropneumothorax. Total pleural change makes 18. Sputum test is the most definitive examination for confirming diagnosis. there is no real effective remedy for this though there are some which reduced symptoms. Only way so far, is in prevention of this disease. The way to prevent this disease might be in stopping to eat those raw crabs or cray fish.
