The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the use of dexamethasone would be harmful to the calcaneal tendon of healthy Wistar rats and to verify whether the concomitant consumption of curcumin could mitigate this possible impairment. The animals were divided into healthy control group (CT - without dexamethasone and curcumin), control dexamethasone group (DEXA - with dexamethasone and without curcumin) and dexamethasone curcumin group (DEXA-CURC - with dexamethasone and curcumin). The administration of dexamethasone occurred for 5 weeks (3 times a week) and simultaneously the animals consumed curcumin during that period. The structural and material properties of tendons were analyzed. Absolute and relative deformations demonstrated lower values in the DEXA group in relation to the other groups, which were similar to each other. Although DEXA tendons resist the same maximum forces and tension, they have a lower capacity to deform. In contrast, the data showed that curcumin mitigated the stiffness since the DEXA-CURC group deformed in a similar way to the CT group. It is concluded that the consumption of curcumin favored the attenuation of the side effect of the use of dexamethasone.
