Sterische Cyclopentadienyl‐Äquivalente in der Chemie der f‐Elemente: Monomere, homoleptische Lanthanid(III)‐tris[N,N′‐bis(trimethylsilyl)‐benzamidinate

Steric Cyclopentadienyl Equivalents in f‐Element Chemistry: Monomeric, Homoleptic Lanthanide(III) Tris[N,N′‐bis(trimethylsilyl)benzamidinates]Anhydrous lanthanide trichlorides react with N‐silylated sodium benzamidinates, Na[4‐RC6H4C(NSiMe3)2], (1a–d), to give the monomeric, homoleptic lanthanide(III) benzamidinates [4‐RC6H4C(NSiMe3)2]3Ln (2–23, R = H, MeO, CF3, Ph). The molecular structure of [4‐MeOC6H4C(NSiMe3)2]3Pr (11) has been determined by X‐ray diffraction. Absorption and emission measurements reveal that the three benzamidinate ligands produce an unusually large crystal field which is comparable with that of cyclopentadienyl.

A new preparation of lanthanide alkoxide, and some applications in catalysis.

A new route to lanthanide tris(alkoxides) is described. These compounds are easily prepared by reaction of n-BuLi with corresponding adducts LnCl 3, (3–4 ROH) that are obtained from hydrated LnCl 3. They are efficient as catalysts in epoxidation of allylic alcohols by TBHP and in Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley-Oppenauer reactions.

Analysis of multinuclear lanthanide induced shifts. Part 6. Structures of lanthanide(III) tris(oxydiacetate) complexes in aqueous solution

The structure of the series of lanthanide(III) tris(oxydiacetate) complexes in aqueous solution has been investigated with the use of 1H, 13C, and 17O n.m.r. The data show that these complexes are not isostructural. In the first half of the series a nine-co-ordinate structure, with three oxydiacetates bound in a tridenate fashion, predominates. Upon going to the heavier lanthanides a carboxylate of one of the oxydiacetate ligands is expelled from the first co-ordination sphere. As a result of slow exchange between the two enantiomeric forms of the complexes, a separation of the geminal methylene protons is observed at 6 °C and 200 MHz.

Mixed-ligand complexes of trivalent lanthanides. Part 3. Complexes of heptafluorodimethyloctane-3,5-dione and pyrazine: syntheses and spectral studies

The lanthanide(III) tris(heptafluorodimethyloctanedionates), [Ln(fod)3], form solid adducts with pyrazine (pyz) resulting in an increase in co-ordination number of the lanthanides from 6 to 7. In these adducts pyrazine co-ordinates through only one of its nitrogen atoms. The praseodymium, europium, and ytterbium adducts have been investigated for their applicability as lanthanide shift reagents. The dipolar shift produced in the spectra of butanol, benzyl alcohol, and dibutyl ether is discussed. The complexes do not dissociate even in the presence of added substrates (alcohols or ether).

Synthesis, vibrational spectra and stereochemistry of lanthanide tris(chlorosulphates), Ln(SO 3Cl) 3 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho and Er)

-Lanthanide(III) chlorosulphates, Ln(SO 3Cl) 3 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho and Er) have been synthesized by solvolytic reaction of chlorosulphuric acid on the corresponding benzoates. The low conductivity values and the IR spectra of these compounds suggest a cation-anion interaction leading to covalent bonding. The bands observed in the reflectance spectra and the values of magnetic moments may indicate a coordination number of 6 for these metals, with bidentate chlorosulphate groups.

Synthesis and IR spectroscopic study of rare-earth tris(acetylacetonates)

The various hydrate forms of the tris(acetylacetonates) of the whole series of RE have been prepared and studied by IR spectroscopy. For a given hydrate form the IR spectra in the RE series do not alter. The differences in the IR spectra of dehydrated preparations are explained by a variation in the RE series of the degree of hydrolysis of the tris(acetylacetonates) and also by the high stability of the octahedral configuration of the anhydrous tris(acetylacetonate) for the heaviest RE.

Pfeiffer effect optical activity developed in lanthanide tris(pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylate) complexes by chiral tartrate substrates

Optical activity has been induced in the title complexes through outer-sphere complexation with L-tartaric acid, and with several carboxyl and hydroxyl esters. The optical activity was studied in the Tb(III) and Eu(III) complexes by means of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectroscopy, and the symmetry changes associated with the adduct formation were followed by examining the hypersensitive absorption of the Ho(III) complexes. Optical activity was found to be induced by each substrate, although the nature of the outer-sphere interaction was necessarily different in the various systems. It was found in every case that the presence of a (R,R)-tartrate substrate led to enrichment of the A-isomer of the lanthanide complexes.

Low-temperature phase transition in crystals of an optically active lanthanide complex

A second-order crystalline phase transition occurs between 120 and 5 K in trisodium lanthanide tris(oxydiacetate) di(sodium perchlorate) hexahydrate single crystals, Na3Ln(C4H4O5)3·2NaClO4·6H2O. Results from optical, circular dichroism and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy are used to define the low-temperature space group. The transition is from the room-temperature space group R32 to P3121 or its mirror image P3221. It lowers the site symmetry of the lanthanide from D3 to C2 and results in movement of a sodium ion off a three-fold axis.

Lanthanide chelates of some quinolinecarboxylic acids

The preparation of some lanthanide(III) tris and monobasic bis n-quinolinecarboxylates ( n = 4, 6, 8) is reported. All compounds were characterized by elemental analysis and thermoanalytical and conductivity measurements. IR and electronic spectra are also presented, in comparison with the spectra of the corresponding lanthanide(III) 2-quinolinecarboxylates, in order to determine in such a way the ligands are bound to the cation. The spectral data indicated that the 4-, 6- and 8-quinolinecarboxylic acids form O-bidentate structures, whereas structures involving the nitrogen atom probably occur for the chelates of the 2-quinolinecarboxylic acid.

Zero-field paramagnetic resonance of trivalent gadolinium in several lanthanide tris(ethylsulfate) nonahydrates and nonadeuterates: Determination of crystal-field and hyperfine-structure parameters

Abstract : Employing isotopically pure trivalent 155Gd, 157Gd, and 160Gd as guests in dilute mixed crystals of lanthanum tris(ethylsulfate) nonahydrate (La3(C2H5SO4)3.9H2O), it has been possible to determine both accurate zero-field splitting parameters of crystal field origin and hyperfine structure constants due to magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole interaction terms. The zero-field paramagnetic resonance spectroscopic method is used. It is reasoned that the quadrupole hyperfine constant is due, almost entirely, to lattice contributions; moreover, it is shown to be of the expected order of magnitude and sign. The hyperfine anomaly is discussed. A set of crystal field parameters are reported for the first time for 160Gd in crystals of La(C2H5SC4)3.9D2O which differ significantly from those of the hydrate. Variations of crystal field parameters with various lanthanon host ions are also observed. Finally, a few comments concerning zero-field line widths and their measurement are made.
